I sometimes find it cathartic just to type it all out and then erase it.
But yeah, for me it's mostly about not wanting to deal with the responses - whether "me too" or "you're an asshole."

Remember when that was a thing? When the internet was full of creatives who were finding their communities instead of self-aggrandizing buttheads building a "brand".

I just straight up turn reply notifications off if I don't have questions that need to be answered or something. There's probably huge chains of people yelling at me all over the place but I'll never know and couldn't care less. I've even been banned from some subs and couldn't be bothered to even read whatever the mod message said. I'm always just like "Wow, some people take reddit very seriously" lmao

I often type it out and decide that sharing my knowledge on a topic isn’t always fun for me and I know they’ll either ask follow up questions or argue with my correct answer. Either way, I didn’t really want to answer in the first place and I definitely don’t want to have a conversation about it.
One day I typed out two paragraphs and then I just declared “you don’t get to know!” and closed reddit.

Can’t even be sure you’re talking to a person anymore. It’s kind of weird—I like the smaller subreddits better because at least you’re talking to a probably not brain dead human being.
Wayyd@reddit
Smaller subreddits are the only places that haven't been astroturfed to death. You can actually pinpoint when a subreddit becomes too popular to have good content anymore, and it's usually around 100k followers. That's when the bots start coming in and systematically reposting every top post and comment that ever got posted on that sub.
Commenting on political subs with a non-partisan take, or even a not-partisan-enough take will get you purity tested immediately. The lack of nuance on the internet just makes me not want to engage in any serious discussion. That's why I stick to shitposts and humor subs.

It's a definite skill to not reply to things that you either don't agree with or are just outright fucking stupid.
However with age comes wisdom, and wisdom tells you very few people will ever change their mind about anything, even if you have a compelling argument.
Hence it goes back to the old saying "never argue with an idiot on the internet...".
Though I must admit I still have work to do ignoring the crap myself, but I'm getting better!

Shit this was me 10 minutes ago in the SpaceX starship catch thread... People arguing over whether Musk should get credit or the engineers. The people arguing that Musk deserves the most credit did the dismissive "they don't and won't ever understand what it is like to run a business" shtick. Meanwhile I have sat as voting member of a corporate board of directors and the musk fellators are fucking nuts.

thatscucktastic@reddit
Fun answer: both!! The mechazilla chopsticks were Elon's idea. Go on, call me a fellator lmao.
What does your position on a board have to do with Elon's position as CEO and CTO of spacex? Spacex is a private company and does not answer to a board of directors.
Shrek1982@reddit
Ok... Cool he had an idea, the bulk of the credit still goes to the people that designed and figured out how to build and implement it. All I am trying to say is that people who lopsidedly give all/most of the credit to Elon are delusional. Yes, he does deserve some but not nearly as much as fanboys tend to give him. Executives should mostly be getting credit for ensuring the company is financially viable and ensuring that their team has the resources to innovate.
You know that SpaceX still has a board right? Gwynne Shotwell is the President and COO, Bret Johnsen is the CFO, Brian Gower is the CMO, and so on. They would not have been able to attract the private investments they have without one. Musk can technically overrule the board but it generally would be a bad idea. All that is besides the point though I mentioned it as a point of qualification in regards to the "they don't and won't ever understand what it is like to run a business" thing that some of the fanboys were saying.

I used to love arguing on the internet lol. I think the toxicity of my relationship with my dad was part of that, because after I was out on my own for a while and started healing that changed. One day it was suddenly like, is any of this a worthy use of my time and energy? Very often now I get halfway through a long reply to a convo where I stop, look at the nature of the thread so far and realize two things. One - the people / person involved is too bound up in winning to care about different perspectives, and two - I actually don’t care if someone is wrong.
I’ve noticed too that the longer my reply gets, the more likely it is that I just delete it.

The ID posts (I'm on a bunch of them) really send me. Someone asks what animal is this and there are 126 comments of "fox" "it's a fox" "that's a fox" "fantastic Mr. Fox" "fox all day".
There's an upvote button! You agree, just click it and move on! Sure maybe a few duplicates in the first few minutes, but 4 hours later - and sometimes days later! - rolling up to post the 127th "that's a fox" like yours is the absolute authority we've been waiting for. I don't know why but it irritates the hell out of me. We all feel like our input is so valuable (and I include myself!) that we just take up time and space to get that "I'm smart too! You should apply at least that much delay to any post online. Never write and post something if it's written in anger or if it could be asking fuel to a fire. Walk away, take a break, read it again with distance, then post if you're still stavfel by it.

My goodness. Ya'll are my people. Daily! Daily I want to call someone out for being stupid or just wrong. Then I think "nah it takes too much energy to check spelling and proper punctuation." Then it's what if I'm wrong then I will be the stupid one and I will get downvoted, which btw my autocorrect does not recognize so I have to type it 3 times, then I say eff it all, not worthit, yes I saw that I'm tired of typing now, what was my point? Crap. Whateve...post

Bonus points if you keep a running word doc filled with all the overlong, incomplete comments you never posted, just in case you change your mind, or so you'll feel like the effort was not wasted, but really you'll definitely never look at them again.

I just discarded three comments in the past 10 minutes. I have no patience for weird unnecessary downvotes.
