What's a feature on new cars you absolutely hate?.
Posted by Ganceany@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 833 comments
I'll say, it's definitely the flatscreen on the center console. Knobs and buttons are and where always superior, more intuitive and it doesn't require you to look at the screen for stuff.
Second is the push to start button, I liked having a place for my key while I drive, and not having to throw it around.
EMPAEinstein@reddit
Too many damn screen in new cars. Not enough physical controls.
NotoriousCFR@reddit
The idea of "keyless" entry/ignition is supposed to be that you can keep your key in your pocket or purse. Taking it out and placing it somewhere defeats the whole purpose of the feature existing in the first place
The one I hate is auto start/stop. Pressing the button to deactivate it is part of my startup routine, it's muscle memory at this point.
RBR927@reddit
Auto start stop only works with a manual transmission. When tied into the clutch that short delay before the car starts is fine, while in an automatic it’s awful.
OrdinarySun2314@reddit
What manual vehicle do you have that has auto start stop? My 22 Corolla is a manual and it does not have start stop. I believed it was because it was a manual.
RBR927@reddit
Every recent rental I’ve had in Europe.
six_six@reddit
Auto start stop sucks because it usually engages 10 milliseconds before the light turns green. It’s fucking enraging when that happens.
448977@reddit
Not to mention that it also cuts off the air conditioning. Even if you only have to wait 30 seconds for the light to change, when it’s 110 outside you’ll break a sweat.
ny0000m@reddit
Have you driven a car with auto start stop? They have a special evaporator that stores cold.
448977@reddit
None of my 4 different vehicles I’ve owned never had that. My current vehicles have a module installed that permanently disables it. Problem solved.
ny0000m@reddit
None of the 100s of subarus and VWs I've repaired ever cut ac when engine turns off
OrdinarySun2314@reddit
What exactly would be turning the ac compressor pump when the engine's not running?
ny0000m@reddit
The evaporator is specially made with some sort of insulator to retain coldness for a while.
448977@reddit
Possibly you should talk to some Ford, Chevy and Dodge mechanics.
Trollygag@reddit
No Ford, Honda, or BMW I have ever driven with auto start/stop kept AC cold when the auto stop engaged and engine stopped at a light. Maybe you live somewhere it doesn't actually get hot, but the air goes from cold to tepid, and in a hot vehicle or a vehicle getting heated by the sun, that sucks.
RaidGbazo@reddit
Youll also notice when its -10 with a near 20 degree windchill and the engine shuts off on you.
darkguille@reddit
On my wife’s Mini, it switches the engine off just before you actually come to a complete stop, so it always jerks to a stop as if you suddenly put on the anchors. Drives me nuts.
AK_Sole@reddit
Would putting it in Neutral as you approach the red light make any difference?
Rattle_Can@reddit
that cant be good for the drivetrain
QuiickLime@reddit
Is it an automatic? I find the auto start-stop in the mini to work pretty well, but I've only driven a manual.
darkguille@reddit
Yeah she has a MY22 automatic. It also goes into coasting mode when you’re not accelerating down the hill, which I find annoying haha It feels like they’ve done everything they can to keep emissions down so they cut the engine at the first possible opportunity. My MiL has a 2019 Cooper S manual and that works pretty well.
Educational_Age_1333@reddit
A solutely hated my RAV4 hybrid but its start stop was butter smooth and I miss it.
SNRatio@reddit
I have a base model Rav4 hybrid. It is ruthlessly adequate: all the stuff you absolutely need works well and will probably continue to do so indefinitely. The start/stop and I'd say almost everything in the drivetrain performs near flawlessly. But Toyota was also very thorough in encouraging people to buy a more expensive car. The lack of pushbutton start in a '22 for starters.
Educational_Age_1333@reddit
My 22 rav4 hybrid was the first car I traded in early in my life. Automatic lights automatic wipers were horrible. No interior lights on the door buttons? It got amazing mpg and always reliable but was so boring it made me hate it.
ugfish@reddit
Toyota uses its electric motor to get the car rolling which helps with that smoothness. Toyota hybrids have smoothly transitioned from gas to EV for over a decade.
Educational_Age_1333@reddit
Yeah the start stop in my Pathfinder is much much different lol. One of the only things I liked about the rav though
twoheadedhorseman@reddit
A VW I drove in Portugal turned on the car when the car in front moved. It was lovely since it reacted usually before I did
Drunken_Hamster@reddit
Plus, in the summer your AC gets hot again basically instantly. Auto start-stop can fuck all the way off when the ambient temp is above 80-85(27-30c).
fiah84@reddit
yeah it is, luckily most of the time you can sort of tell if it's going to be red for a while or not, if it's the latter then just keep it in gear so it doesn't stop
Benana@reddit
It really depends on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers do auto stop/start better than others. My 2019 VW Golf has an 8 speed automatic and does it pretty well. It’s not 100% seamless but the engine wakes up and is ready to go almost the moment you take your foot off the brake.
Twin_Turbo@reddit
But what's the point, you save like $30 worth of gas over 4 years but start your car an additional 5000 times which puts way more wear on the parts
Bladeslap@reddit
Because lots of cars idling in traffic significantly affects the air quality in that area. It's not primarily for the benefit of the driver but for the people living in areas with high traffic density.
As for wear, stop start has been around for quite a long time now and I've yet to hear of cars needing new starter motors at a significantly greater rate than prior to stop start.
Benana@reddit
It's probably a way for the manufacturers to comply with increasingly stringent efficiency standards without having to put a ton of money into researching and developing a whole new engine. The extra few mpgs also look better on paper when people are car shopping.
Mimical@reddit
That's essentially what it is. Auto stop start looks really good for the purposes of the tests and standards but over the duration of the vehicle the moment you need to replace that starter motor the consumer has a larger cost to deal with.
leTrull@reddit
Cars with start-stop have a stronger starter motor and battery to cope with the increased load. If you have a car with 48v system, it's even less of an issue.
Yeah anyway.. I turn it off every time.
Ciabatta_Pussy@reddit
yeah, the starter is rated for like 10,000 starts so it should last quite a while. The battery on the other hand will not and they require a much more expensive battery.
i didnt know how prevelant this technology was until I started cruising around with my windows down a lot. At every stop light you hear like 2-3 random shitboxes turning their engines back on lol
Navaros313@reddit
Yeah and since I've definitely had days where I started my car nearly 10 times or more I know that 10000 starts ain't shit bruh.
VikingIV@reddit
Yeah, in some cases it’s a separate starter motor than initial startup.
Benana@reddit
Makes sense. And by the time you need to replace the starter motor, your car will probably already well out of much of its warranty. So the manufacturers don’t really incur much of that cost.
Substantial_Fix6883@reddit
Better stop/start then we go thru another 74 gas crisis and make all the cars gay again
cubs223425@reddit
Is there any vehicle with it where you've heard of starter issues though? Not just that a person had a problem, but that a model was plagued with starter problems? I think the last time I heard of anyone with a bad starter was my 1993 Bonneville, about 10 years ago.
Cranks_No_Start@reddit
And you get to deal with the interior getting warm at every stop.
KingDamager@reddit
I’m pretty sure my 19 golf uses its front parking sensors as well to detect when it needs to start up again. It does it so well / often for when I need it
Benana@reddit
That would make sense, considering how the engine also wakes up when you turn the wheel a certain amount.
RBR927@reddit
That’s because the power steering system uses a lot of power which the battery alone can’t provide.
Benana@reddit
Ah I see. That makes more sense.
6786_007@reddit
I disabled that BS on my A5. It was a 20 dollar plug and play module that automatically disables on start up. So worth it.
RammerRod@reddit
Vcds can defeat this. I found a checkbox for start stop exists and was able to completely disable it in an audi. Never have to push a button. No ac on tricks involved.
h_adl_ss@reddit
Problem is in Germany you won't pass inspection like that. So you'd have to re-program it twice every 2 years ...
Robots_Never_Die@reddit
You're complaining about taking 5 minutes every two years?
inflames797@reddit
It takes less than 5 minutes to change with VCDS, it's hardly an issue.
bandley3@reddit
I don’t know if they still have it but Mazda developed a system that would stop the engine in such a way that one cylinder had a fuel/air charge under compression. They would just fire off the spark plug to restart the engine rather than using the starter. It sounds absolutely brilliant but I don’t recall how well it worked.
Accro15@reddit
It's also fine in any hybrid where the electric motor can get you off the line
masterventris@reddit
It can be annoying in a PHEV that has run down to zero, as you only get EV assist until ~2mph before it has to light the engine anyway, so it is still jerky if you want to pull away briskly.
This is probably affected by the hybrid system tuning between models though.
BlankkBox@reddit
I don’t mind it at all with my manual 21’ wrangler. Almost feels like you’re kicking starting it though when it cranks back up with a clutch press.
EngineeringKid@reddit
I drove a manual with auto stop and I kept thinking it stalled. I tried to restart the engine like 6 times before I figured it out.
Square-Cockroach-884@reddit
Right? As a mechanic I have spent my career trying to make sure that the vehicle will stay running when you come to a stop. It freaks me out every time I drive a customers car and it does that shit. "Well that wasn't on the repair ticket".
andychinart@reddit
TIL auto stop start is even a thing for manuals. I think it'd end up bugging me way too much.
fiah84@reddit
it's honestly not bad, you get used to it
elitemouse@reddit
Until you want to mod the exhaust to actually hear the car and you go insane every time the car dies at a light.
ObscureVagina@reddit
Me too. I have a 2023 Toyota GR86 with a manual transmission, it doesn’t have auto start/stop
lhturbo@reddit
The GR Supra has it, it sucks just as much as our other cars. I just bimmercoded it off for good.
cannedrex2406@reddit
Auto start stop with a manual is the best
You have full control over when it engages thanks to it being controlled by the clutch being engaged
riverturtle@reddit
In my Cadillac, auto start/stop is the only feature you can’t have with the manual transmission and I absolutely prefer it that way. Now if only I could find a way to permanently disable hill start assist.
redmadog@reddit
Despite it is shit option, is works better with automatic transmission rather than manual. Because if you press clutch and shift first gear rather quick this system doesn’t catch up to start engine that quick and you may end up in a dangerous situation. And it doesn’t start engine at all after this but you need to start it manually with the key or button (VW group cars).
With automatic it always starts when you release brake, but you hate this 1-2 sec delay in a hurry situations.
PS I know because I had cars with both manual and auto transmissions and absolutely hated this option. Way more on manual though.
RBR927@reddit
It sounds like you were stalling the car if you needed to manually restart the car again. That’s driver error, not an issue with the system.
In my experience driving both manual and automatic cars with ASS, it would only turn off if you were stopped, in neutral, and released the clutch. As soon as you pushed the clutch to engage first it would restart, so that split second of time to shift into gear allowed a seamless restart.
In an automatic it would wait to restart until the brake was released, by which point you were already on the throttle and stuck waiting for it to get things going again.
redmadog@reddit
No I’m not stalling. It just not that quick to start the engine until you start to release cluch. At this point starter is not able to start the engine anymore and gives up. So you need to start it manually.
RBR927@reddit
You are definitely doing something wrong.
cincyaudiodude@reddit
Every autostop vehicle I've ever driven has the engine on before I can fully depress the brake. I simply can't understand how you're driving on a public road of this is a problem for you.
RBR927@reddit
I guess I have faster feet than you do?
cincyaudiodude@reddit
But why, what are you gaining? It's not a racetrack.
Kingseara@reddit
Yes. Let’s put a feature in that EVERYONE hate, all in the name of 0.5 mpg
tyrantelf@reddit
I'd argue the exact opposite, if you're trying to engage the clutch quickly you lug the engine as it's starting and stalling in a manual. It's really fucking annoying.
luckybuck2088@reddit
That sounds terrible in a manual as well, but I suppose depending on the delay it might be ok
I was quick off the line when I had my manual cars though, and that would drive me up a wall
RBR927@reddit
The ones I’ve driven all restarted as soon as I pushed the clutch to shift into first, so there was no delay to get going.
luckybuck2088@reddit
That makes a huge difference
Itsumiamario@reddit
My Malibu has it, and it's annoying. It doesn't auto-stop unless you brake all the way to a complete stop. It won't do it if you slow down and roll into a stop. And even then if it does stop, the slight millimeter twitch of foot movement makes it kick the engine back on, and it will not turn back off until the next time you stop.
Shit it useless and aggravating.
AccomplishedBison369@reddit
It works pretty well in my car. Letting a bit of brake pressure off will get it to start before I actually take my foot off the brake. Aside from the first few times I drove after buying it has been completely fine.
SpittinCzingers@reddit
Yea if you put it in neutral anyway you barely notice it. Mild hybrids are good too it’s mostly extra power made for suspension but can start moving the car and start the engine at the same time so you don’t even notice.
ctn91@reddit
Unless you’re Opel who tie it to the brake. Asshats….
TheLoveKraken@reddit
I’ve barely ever driven an automatic; how does auto stop start work in them? In a manual you have to throw it into neutral, but I was under the impression that in an auto you’d generally just be sat with your foot on the brake in traffic or when giving way. When does it engage?
floydopedia@reddit
It works exactly as you said - you keep your foot on the brake and it engages after a few seconds. Basically, the ECU detects that the brake is pressed for a certain time period (i.e. the car hasn’t moved for a few seconds) and cuts off the fuel and ignition. It restarts the engine as soon as you lift your foot off the brake.
You can read more about how it works here: https://haynes.com/en-us/tips-tutorials/stop-start-technology-explained
JaKr8@reddit
It engages to restart the car as soon as you begin to lift your foot off the brake. I have it in a Jaguar face pace s with the supercharged 6, an Acura mdx s advance, a 540xDrive and x5m50i, no matter how fast I try to go from brake to throttle, I've never been able to beat the system. Personally I don't have any issue with it. And I'm always amazed people get so fired up about it. If the start stop was intrusive enough to impact my driving, I would disable it. I've never had to do that. Maybe some systems aren't nearly as good as others.
Jaded-Lecture-2861@reddit
We test drove a few luxury suvs. I really liked the Stelvio before, but the auto start/ stop was very loud and noticeable. A year later, our X5 also has it, but it's so smooth and well timed. I still turn it off when I want AC full blast, or if someone's going to sit in the car for more than a moment. It's world's better. And keys stay in pockets or purses nowadays.
UncleFumbleBuck@reddit
The Start/Stop on my Pacifica is tuned horribly and the torque converter is too loose, combining to cause a slight rollback at lights when you take your foot off the brake.
All my cars get an auto-start-stop defeat device so I don't have to deal with the stupid #%$#$ing button every time I get in the car.
Suitable_Boat_8739@reddit
I always keep mine in a faraday pouch since these keys are terribly insecure without one. Having to remove it from the pouch before driving, and replacing into the pouch when its done is 10x more work that just putting it in the ignition.
Plus the "run"/not start mode takes 10s to get into is annoying too, you know when the old keys were in run but you didnt start the car yet. Most cars can do this but you have to hold the button without foot on the brake.

Huh?
One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
Start/stop is annoying as hell.
Just more shit to break later on down the road.
Swede_Chef@reddit
But you still gotta take the keys out of your pocket/purse when you lock the car hence why there needs to be a place for them in the car, unless it locks itself when you leave.
FuzzelFox@reddit
My S80 has a keyless ignition and there's a button on each door handle to lock the car after you get out. It's pretty seamless
Viperlite@reddit
My Cadillac automatically locks itself when you walk away with the key. If you forget the keys inside the car, it beeps the horn 3 times a few seconds after you’ve closed the doors.
When you return to the locked car with the keys in your pocket, the doors automatically unlock just before you reach for the handle.
Navaros313@reddit
Another "feature" that should be discarded. No automatic locking or unlocking as a base "feature" that should be tied to an app of your phone since all phones have NFC
CajunReeboks@reddit
I can't think of a car that has keyless ignition that doesn't have touch-entry as well.
justyg00@reddit
Isn’t that the point of keyless access? There’s a button on the door handle or the handle itself is touch sensitive…
ryencool@reddit
This is where I love my tesla. I don't do anything. I walk up to my car, it unlocks, and technically you can just put it in drive and go. We have a pin setup so if anyone manages to break in they can't just do that and take off. Then when we park as soon as the door is opened it puts itself in park mode, and we just walk away. It locks itself and is good to go. It is the easiest operation of a motor vehicle ever, and I love it.
takemewithyoutwo@reddit
And has the absolutely shittiest interior of any car bears it's price range
ryencool@reddit
Guess that would be a matter of opinion, have nonissies with mine. Has plenty of storage, built in phone charging, very minimal design, so no buttons everywhere. So we love it.
takemewithyoutwo@reddit
Every Tesla fanboy calls it "minimal" when no one seems to call the civic, roughly the same interior,as such
ryencool@reddit
If you think a new civic, and new model 3 have similarly minimal interiors, I would like some of the reality bending drugs you're on....also not a tesla fan boy. The cyber Truck is up there with the Pontiac Aztek in my mind, and if Musk was infront of me I'd have some choice words. The dude is a douche.
Civic
Model 3
Navaros313@reddit
Yeah the lack of design for the model 3 is garbage. There is no interior period. Nothing to even design.
gmpeil@reddit
Stop/start is asinine. It isn’t a feature anybody asked for and is only there for CAFE standards. BMW has the right idea. It stays defeated when you hit the button. No need to make it part of the startup sequence. It’s a car, not a damn fighter jet!
NotoriousCFR@reddit
I thought I remembered reading that they only get CAFE credits for it if it's the default setting and it's activated every time you start the car - which is why most don't "remember" that you deactivated it.
In my case I think it can be programmed out with Forscan, I just haven't gotten there yet
Navaros313@reddit
Fuck man that's like the traction control on my fusion, such a faf to get in there and it's always turning on! And now I'm having steering wheel button issues so this upcoming winter won't be as fun as usual. Sadface.
gmpeil@reddit
You may be right. I’ve never read anything about it. Begs the question why would bmw even have the “feature” if their implementation doesn’t count toward cafe credits?
blueadept_11@reddit
My mild hybrid has a start stop that is nearly imperceptible. I hated it before when I used earlier versions, but now that I have it and know how much fuel it saves with imperceptible delay, I'm okay with it.
SchemeShoddy4528@reddit
if you have a ford disable it with forscan. so glad i did
goaelephant@reddit
I dont like driving with shit in my pockets, I like unloading everything (wallet, phone, keys) into a console somewhere
2BlueZebras@reddit
As someone who has responded to probably 100 rollover crashes, I would advise against this.
Not because of injuries from that stuff being projectiles. But because you'll never find it again. If it's your phone and you roll down a hill, good luck finding it to call 911 (your car will probably be dead so bluetooth won't work). Unless your center console locks, it's opening and flying everywhere.
StanknBeans@reddit
Not even rollovers, got in a head on collision at highway speeds and the way the engine/transmission tunnel pushed into the cabin nothing in the cup holders or center arm rest were inaccessible.
2BlueZebras@reddit
Well, yes. A head on collision at highway speeds is significantly more violent than most rollovers. I've seen plenty of rollovers with minor or no injuries. Most head on collisions are fatal or major injuries.
StanknBeans@reddit
Lucky for me, it was the latter!

AFB27@reddit
I honestly like auto start stop but my non car people family feel the same way. Absolutely hate it.
I'll turn it off in traffic and when it's hot outside but otherwise, I'm a huge fan.
PreviousWar6568@reddit
Auto start/stop refers to when you start or stop at lights. That can be turned off a lot of the time, at least in the cars I’ve driven.
LanceFree@reddit
My Toyota has that auto shut off and also it defaults to economy mode. So I have 2 features to turn off. There’s a chip to bypass the shut-off, but then I’d still have to disable economy mode, just not worth it. Last winter I drove my niece’s old Corolla for two days and it was fun: base model, manual windows, no tint - Time Machine.
Deinococcaceae@reddit
I feel like I'd be way more tolerant of auto start/stop if the delay could be adjusted. I also immediately turn it off because it's maddening to have the engine killed the millisecond after coming to a complete stop at a stop sign.
Koioua@reddit
My only issue is that sometimes, vehicle thinks that my key is out of the car when it's in my pocket, so I end taking it out anyways.
DeviIstar@reddit
In a rental Volvo this week, can’t disable auto start/stop - my rage is unmeasured
britishrust@reddit
I loathe start/stop on my BMW 116i. It’s too slow to react but the worst part is it seems to fuck up the (auto) gearbox. Lift my foot off the brake and it will restart (just a bit too late) and every few times it’ll cause this horrible sound and shock in the driveline. I genuinely feel like it’s destroying the car. Wish there was an easy way to permanently disable it.
freakinidiotatwork@reddit
Using bimmercode, set go to Engine Control Unit (DME) -> Auto Start/Stop Function Memory and set to Active
britishrust@reddit
Don’t have one unfortunately but that sounds easy enough to ask a friend!
krombopulousnathan@reddit
Here’s a tip; get BimmerCode and code it out, it’s crazy easy to do. Did it in my M2
afropat@reddit
I paid a couple hundred bucks to have that coded to remember my input when I got my car. Game changer.
Gaprunner@reddit
I absolutely hate the auto start stop. I have a 24’ Impreza and thankfully the button to disable it is super obvious now so it’s just become a habit to push it before I head out, but on older Subaru models at least it’s a button that’s on the bottom of the dash to the left of the steering wheel and it’s so obnoxious to push
Ganceany@reddit (OP)
Oh absolutely, but to be honest, and this might be me, it just feels a bit wrong to open your car without any action before opening. It feels like it was open all the time.
On top of that, maybe it's because of a habit. Usually if I grab the keys to go out and do something I usually have it on my hand when I reach the car.
I guess it's useful for people that have a messy bag they throw things in..

Reduced visibility. I know the thick pillars are required due to increasingly stringent safety standards, and I like being safer in the event of a crash. But pillars getting thicker and creating massive blindspots makes me feel like I'm more likely to get into the crash they're supposed to save me in.
soapboxhonda@reddit
Not in a car, but i drive a fuel truck for work, big volvo semi, and ive noticed if I pull up to a 4 way stop, I can't see the road to my left because my mirror blocks it perfectly. Ive nearly pulled out in front of people because of it before I figured it out. Now I make sure to lean forward and back before I go through any 4 way stop signs. It's not as big of a problem on larger roads, but when it's just a 2 lane road intersecting a 2 lane road, it obscures my sight perfectly. It's annoying and dangerous
strongmanass@reddit
I've learned over the years to give semis more space than I did when I was younger because 1) I finally understand the limitations of your guys' visibility, and 2) your job on the road is way more difficult than me just commuting.
soapboxhonda@reddit
Well as a truck driver, I appreciate people like you. However the ones who cut over 2 ft from my front bumper, well they make me wanna play bumper cars. Or the ones that will sit just behind my trailer, to the point where I can't actually tell if they're behind me, and I need to get over for something. I think they think they're doing me a favor, but in reality, just gtfo so I can get over and not have to worry about clipping your car

As a tall person, it often irritates me that I can't even get into a lot of small cars. The Corvettes made from about 1985 to 2000, I could get into it, but my legs are shoved so tight under the steering wheel, that I can't even operate the pedals. My first car was a 1966 Mustang, which had plenty of legroom, so it can be done; the car manufacturers simply can't be bothered. So I wind up driving a Ford Expedition, the only car/SUV I've found where with the driver's seat all the way back, my toes can't even reach the firewall. Thank you, Ford.
Suitable_Boat_8739@reddit
Thats a good point. Your always better off not getting in a crash in the first place but the safety organizations dont test for that. Seems like a flaw.

my greatest fear w/ my older parents driving. you really can't see shit out of newer cars, you gotta always be moving your head looking everywhere.
BlackCatFurry@reddit
Only a pedestrian? I have had a large van be hidden in the A-pillar blind spots multiple times. I wouldn't be surprised if an 18-wheeler popped out of there one day. (I do check them thoroughly after the first time a van hid in there)
fff140@reddit
I've had a police car hidden behind the A-pillar at a intersection, lol. I think I I've cut them off, but they didn't stop me
lemonylol@reddit
I just think these excessive monolithic panels on large trucks and SUVs look so ugly. I have no functional issue with them really.
milifiliketz@reddit
Also not being able to see the hood from the driver's seat. I kinda like to be able to see the front of the vehicle I'm steering. I miss you 2001 Nissan Altima..
Square-Cockroach-884@reddit
I drive a lot of newer cars being an auto mechanic. And even with backup cameras, proximity sensors, and auto dipping mirrors it's easier for me to negotiate tight parking lots, in forward or reverse, in my 65 F100 with no power steering, because I can see exactly where all four corners are.
Notamaninthesky@reddit
That’s an unfortunate consequence of having such a spike in SUVs out on the road
PeterFechter@reddit
Don't worry the electronics will fix that self created problem!
rugbyj@reddit
I used to own a first gen fiesta and it was like driving a greenhouse. You could see what the other driving was having for dinner it was so open.
I ride motorbikes so I still get that ultra-visibility perk regularly and it's just amazing what you see on the road when you're not encumbered by foot-thick pillars.
Socr2nite@reddit
Jeep Grand Cherokee! Can’t tell you how many times I’m coming to a stop looking left while someone else is too. I can’t see them until we are right on each other. The way that works is the car is “small” when it’s at a distance and the pillar covers them until you get closer when the car appears bigger. At this point you can finally see their front and rear bumpers behind your thick ass A pillar.
hoxxxxx@reddit
i worry w/ my parents driving their car because of this. you straight up can't see out of a lot of newer cars.
bandley3@reddit
If we’re going to fill cars with LCD screens let’s just coat the A-pillar with a screen and put a camera in (or near) the pillar, essentially making it disappear. It would help with other pillars as well, especially in a minivan.
Camburglar13@reddit
I loved my WRX for this. Thin pillars, big windows, great visibility. Noticeably better than anything else I’ve driven or sat in.
six_six@reddit
I remember cars were the trunk wasn’t higher than your head.
dumahim@reddit
Yep. Pillars i can work with, but the high trunk and spoiler on my GTO makes my rearview mirror nearly pointless.
Buckus93@reddit
While cars can hide behind my A-pillar. I have to move my head around to see if anything's behind it.
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
Auto start/stop and lane departure warning.
I actually wouldn't mind the second one if it was actually accurate, but there's so many instances where the systems get confused by something like an expansion joint in the road that you end up with alarm fatigue.
NotoriousCFR@reddit
I had a Hyundai SUV as a rental a little while back and that was my first experience with a car that "corrects" your steering if it thinks you're going out of your lane. In reality it just made the car feel broken. Can't believe some people live with that shit day to day.
NapsterKnowHow@reddit
I had a Hyundai Tucson rental 2 weeks ago and the lane assist was not intrusive at all. Meanwhile on Ford's it feels like it's trying to shove you back into the lane. I loved the lane assist on the Hyundai
NotoriousCFR@reddit
Well my sample size is just the one and I hated it lol. I’ll take your word for it that it gets worse, but I hope I never have to find out first-hand
suckmydiznak@reddit
One of the many reasons I will do everything within my power to never own a car made past the early 2010's.
FooJBunowski@reddit
I have a Genesis GV70, and find the safety features to be extremely invasive and at times, unsafe. Lane assist is the worst, but my car screams at me almost every morning I’m too close to the car in front of me when I’m sitting in standstill traffic and haven’t moved.
I like the car a lot, but hate how invasive these features are. I feel like my deceased mother, who was the worst backseat driver I’ve ever met, has come back to life in the form of this car. (She was a terrible driver herself, ironically)
theeamericanbeef@reddit
I just got a new hyundai sonata n-line and I was able to turn all that stuff completely off, I’m sure genesis would have the same ability. The only issue is if you turn the front collision one all the way off it puts a big warning light on your dash so I left that one in its lowest setting.
FooJBunowski@reddit
I will check into that and thank you.
trapped_outta_town2@reddit
This one drives me crazy. It seems many cars in the last 5 years seem to have at least lane departure warning. Which would be fine if it actually worked but too many of them have constant false positives leading the driver to just ignore it after a while at best and get annoyed with it and turn it off at worst.
Back when I was looking for a new car earlier this year I was considering the EV9 as it seemed to tick all the boxes. I was looking up youtube reviews. The reviewer had to turn off a bunch of "safety" functions just to stop from it constantly beeping at him distractingly while hew as talking. Lane departure warning, driver fatigue warning, car ahead drove off warning (no really - it notifies you if the car in front of you has taken the exit and there is no one in front of you). And this defaults back to on each time you start it up, so you have to jump through multiple menus on their awful touchscreen that lags like crazy to switch it off.
Why on earth would all this shit be on by default? Struck it off my list immediately, didn't even go into the dealership.
ultrafunkmiester@reddit
Like a lot of these features, they require you to learn them and adapt your style. I took about 9 months to truly trust the radar cruise on my audi. It has lane departure (without correction), but I don't like using it, but radar cruise is something that is very hard to do without once you are used to it.
suckmydiznak@reddit
I still think lane departure warning is better than lane keeping assist. No, I don't want you to yank the steering wheel out of my hand every time you make a mistake.
JaKr8@reddit
What type of car do you have? I've never had an issue with lane departure warning. And luckily the start-stop systems in our cars are seamless, although I've been in a Subaru where it almost launches you when it re-engages
IllllIIlIllIllllIIIl@reddit
I have an ND miata and I keep the lane departure warning permanently off because of the frequent false alarms.
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
My own personal car doesn't have either of those things.
I've spent a significant amount of time in a previous generation Subaru XV where the start/stop is absolutely horrendous as you've mentioned, and also had significant wheel time in a current-generation Corolla Hybrid where the AEB triggers on literal shadows, and the lane departure warning has a mind of its own.
Bluecolt@reddit
My last few vehicles have come with lane assist that nudges the wheel if it thinks the vehicle is leaving a lane without the blinker on. They have all gotten confused by an expansion joint on the first drive and annoyed me, so I turned it off right away and never used it again. Fortunately my vehicles have had a button on the dash that turns it on/off and keeps the setting, so at least a one-time button press disabled it as opposed to auto start/stop that I have to disable everytime I start the vehicle.
OrdinarySun2314@reddit
Traction control. Not so much the traction control itself. It's the fact that I have to turn it off every time I start the car. It's default setting is on. I wish I could permanently turn it off.
QuestionTop8210@reddit
anything "smart" aka surveillance tools. I'm talking all the internet connectivity to the apps and monitoring your driving behavior and selling it to insurance companies and also use it to deny warranty claims
Vikturus22@reddit
Yeah that’s an instant pass on any car. I have a 2011 and glad I don’t need a new car anytime soon. I don’t want to be tracked, I want to own my car and have the right to use it how I want without being held by the manufacturer
nostyleguide@reddit
It goes further than that, just look at the new Mustang. Basically, since the software in the car is connected and being updated, you don't legally own it, you're just licensing its use. That means it's protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and if you a) alter it in any way without explicit manufacturer permission, or b) give someone else instructions on how to alter it without explicit permission, you are committing a FELONY.
Ford is spinning this as a positive, focusing on how all the new mods are warranties, but that's because all of them require paying Ford a license since no one can legally modify the engine tune without their permission.
NapsterKnowHow@reddit
So basically any car with voice then. Those are licensed and not owned by you either. That's cars going back to the mid 2000s.
Vikturus22@reddit
Another reason why I won’t ever own a ford
KanterBama@reddit
You have to get a standalone ECU to do that, actually.
Vikturus22@reddit
We shouldn’t have to need this from factory to work on our own car. Either way very happy with my car atm it’s a 2011 and will keep it as long as I can
Suitable_Boat_8739@reddit
That plus im a firm believer that anything that is likely to kill people shouldnt be connected to the internet.
saraphilipp@reddit
Doesn't matter. All those road cameras and bridge cameras track your license plate anyway and they report that information to insurance companies. Who knows what else they do with that info. That's how they busted those women getting abortions crossing state lines.
ItsKlobberinTime@reddit
The (lack of) colour choice. Grey sucks.
yanman@reddit
I'll taker a nice, neutral gray interior, though. Looking at you, Acura, where with some exterior colors my only choice of interior is godawful red or ass-scorching black.
Robots_Never_Die@reddit
I'd get ceramic tint. They even make it in clear if you don't want tint. The interior heat reduction is wild.
Doggydude49@reddit
I didn't know this made a difference for temperature. I thought it was mostly for UV and chipping protection. Good to know!
hiyeji2298@reddit
I’ll admit I have serious nostalgia for 90s-2000s “rat fur” gray in GM vehicles.
Tei-ren@reddit
I was looking at the MDX Type S the other day and thinking hmm, why am I not permitted to get black with the orchid interior? Only black or red interior allowed, unless I were to go with blue paint.
Qel_Hoth@reddit
When we were shopping for the Mach-E we went to a Volvo dealer to look at their C40/XC40. The salesman was super happy that they had a few in "vapor grey" or whatever their flat grey is called. We laughed and said that's literally the only color we DON'T want.
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
Some companies are better than others for this. BMW will sell you absolutely brilliant colours, like Blue Bay Lagoon. I recently rented a Chevy Trax that came in the most outrageous yellow. Mazda has that Soul Red which looks fantastic. So nifty colours are out there and do exist!
halotechnology@reddit
Outrageous?
It's just metallic yellow and it cool !
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
I mean “outrageous” in the best way possible. Like “this colour is so fucking out there, it’s great”. Chevy has had some really great colours on their base cars in recent years. The Spark in particular used to come in some really awesome shades.
Not everyone shares my opinion, though. One of my friends bemoaned the “childish” paint colours (ie, not greyscale) that some manufacturers had on their cars and specifically sought out either a black or grey car.
halotechnology@reddit
Ohh I see yeah because I love it I also saw a trax with light blue was also really good .
Parking-Highlight-98@reddit
Mopar is the king of this, I love every color Dodge cars come in.
SNRatio@reddit
Only after you pay more for the more expensive trim level are you then allowed to pay more for different paint colors.
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
Mazda and BMW give you the cool colours on the base trim.
GM does give you a nice red and a blue on the base Trax, and honestly the Trax is so cheap that the top trim of that with a nifty colour like the yellow or the teal is probably less money than the base trim of other people’s compacts.
Square-Cockroach-884@reddit
Yes. Those and I'm really liking the colors that look almost like old single stage enamel. Not quite matte, but definitely not two or three stage.
cannedrex2406@reddit
I swear the funkiest colours exist on the worst cars on sale.
Like why does a Nissan Juke get to have a super cool Yellow and bright blue but any car I do want to buy is stuck with GREY AND MORE GREY
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
I’ve also noticed that more “mature” cars tend to come in boring colours.
Subaru will sell you an electric blue Impreza but fuck you if you want an electric blue Outback

I love grey, all my future dailies will be grey, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see a rainbow of other cars on the road. Toyota’s deep green, Honda’s bright yellow, Acura’s “gold”, I love seeing these colors in the wild. I’m not brave enough to own them myself, but I will absolutely stare at a green Sienna longer than I should.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit

Same, Portimao Blue is hardly wild or flashy but at least it’s not boring.
AFB27@reddit
Can't go wrong with Portimao. Originally wanted a white spec but when I saw it in person, I had to have it.
AFB27@reddit
I mean that really depends on the brand I guess. Because even the Civic has some great color choices now. I personally think they've gotten much better about this.
TheBigAndy@reddit
It's my favorite thing about Dodge and my least favorite part of Tesla, lol. My option for color on my model y were red and blue, because everything else is just grey scale.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
I’m glad I bought an orange car.
lucygucyapplejuicey@reddit
Could this partially be blamed on Audi? To me, it seemed they influenced the boring grey and white and black trend that we see now
axelguntherc@reddit
Probably the fact that even economy cars have to come with luxury features now, and those that don't are usually considered inferior options to those that do, causing a vicious cycle of cheap cars becoming more expensive.
Even less than 20 years ago most cars that had things like power/heated seats or basic infotainment were in the 40k+ MSRP bracket, which would be closer to 60k or something now. Even in the highest trim you could get on a corolla or civic the only "power" item would generally just be the windows, and maybe a sunroof. Going back to the 90s, things we really take for granted, like AC, ABS, radios, etc. could be optioned out of base models to save money
And nobody complained.
People saw a need for affordable cars, so people bought them in affordable configurations. Now even a Nissan Versa needs heated seats, auto stop-start, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and a massive, laggy infotainment screen to even get considered as a daily. When did we start wanting luxury features in the cars that were supposed to be reasonably priced?
platinum_toilet@reddit
People here complaining about the lack of buttons but previous generation Santa Fe has about 30 buttons within reach.
Jealous-Number-6754@reddit
Changing lane sensors because the vehicle will try to readjust itself automatically. Can’t wait to see if them people at https://www.ojaycars.com can really help get back on the road again, I miss driving, better than the bus.
FluffyExplanation228@reddit
I'm with you 100%! The flat screen on the centre console is tinny. Physical buttons are always easier and faster, especially when you're driving and don't want to be distracted by a screen.
D-Fence@reddit
That stupid European Union enforced speed limiter which beeps at you once you go over the speed limit and has to be deactivated on each engine start again.
dedzip@reddit
That’s a real thing? I thought people were joking about that lol
gumol@reddit
real thing. California governor vetoed a bill like that, but it's a thing in EU.
Viperlite@reddit
Has that made it to German cars sold in the US market yet?
mattvandyk@reddit
It’s on my ‘24 Cayenne, but as an optional feature. So, it’s programmed in the software. I’m guessing it just can’t be disabled in EU models.

mattvandyk@reddit
Oh, I saw; that’s why I deleted it. Had a total brain fart for some reason; the force coming from CF threw it off for me. Appreciated the correction and the rule cites. Thanks!
MrMarketing2317@reddit
You're welcome, just probably adds more to the conversation if you admit you were wrong instead of deleting comments where you called everybody out for being wrong. Just my two cents anyway.
mattvandyk@reddit
?? I did exactly what one does on Reddit in that situation. Deleted the disinformation so as to not mislead later. This isn’t Facebook.
Salt-Lobster316@reddit
I have no dog in the fight here, but obviously it's not Facebook. Pretty sure everybody knows that. Deleting a comment in a thread creates confusion as to what was being discussed. Moreover, if you call everybody out as being wrong, when in fact you are wrong, the right thing to do is to own up to it.
mattvandyk@reddit
Fair enough. My experience on Reddit is that deleting the misleading comment is the standard MO to clean up the information in order to eliminate conflicting information going forward. So, that’s what I did. In so doing, the “call out” was also deleted. The only person who responded to it was /u/MrMarketing2317 (and likely OP since it was at the prime level), but it didn’t have a bunch of downvotes or other comments, so I don’t even know if anyone else saw it. /u/MrMarketing2317 corrected it and I promptly deleted it; then I just didn’t think about it again until being chased to here (which, honestly, is a first for me on Reddit and the reason for the FB remark) in which I acknowledged he was right and thanked him for the correction. The whole thing is very weird. Been on Reddit awhile and never had an interaction like this with someone.
gumol@reddit
Nope, it's a very different market.
Yinci@reddit
It's real and it works like shit because it's currently camera based (and perhaps slightly map based?) and in lots of cases it will track the speed wrongly. In the Netherlands we have lots of parallel roads with different speeds. It's pretty annoying to drive 80kmh with beeps because the car tracked the 60kmh limit of the parallel road.
It's very clearly desk regulations that haven't been tested in practice and I'm glad that shit can be turned off. Also glad I don't have it in my car.
Spixel_@reddit
We don't have that in France, qui don't think it's an EU thing.
Pixelplanet5@reddit
It's EU wide but only for new cars.
D-Fence@reddit
Correct for every car registered after July 2024 iirc.
BogdanPradatu@reddit
Mine arrived in August. Fuck, a couple of months earlier and I would have been good.
kobrons@reddit
It feels like that's an answer to everyone saying "I can't adhere to the speed limit because I can't always look at the Speedo without hitting something"
D-Fence@reddit
It goes off at 2km/h over, so normal driving. It's super annoying.
kobrons@reddit
And then you know that you're diving over the speed limit. You can't claim that you didn't know. Thats all there is to it.
The discussion has always been:
"please adhere to the speed limit"
"I can't because I need to focus on the road"
"please try"
"nope. The road focus is more important"
"okay, we'll give you a way to know wheen you're too fast"
So next time you're doing something slightly illegal don't act as if its the right thing to do because this will lead to stuff like connected bottle caps and speed limit warning chimes.
LheelaSP@reddit
Except that you are not going 82 when your speedo says 82, you are going max 80 and are not breaking any speed limit, yet the car beeps at you.
kobrons@reddit
I'm not saying it'sa perfect system. I'm not even in favor for it. But just saying it feels like an answer to all the victim claims by car drivers.
Just look at the thread from yesterday with the dynamic speed signs. Commenters unironically claimed they couldn't check the speed limit.
portar1985@reddit
Here’s another take, I live in a rural part of Sweden , EU is lowering speed limit in all countries so Sweden has arbitrarily made roads slower in rural parts to the point it’s stupid slow which means everyone is going over the speed limit, this is enough for me to never buy a new car. The forceful tugging on the wheel for going over lines is stupid enough since snow exists on roads where I live. A car almost made me crash because it thought I was going over a line when it was a sliver of snow which sent me into a small skid.
kobrons@reddit
The EU is not lowering speed limits that is a 100% on the swedish government
portar1985@reddit
It’s an easy way to meet emission reductions, I get it from a friend in government
kobrons@reddit
So out of the hundreds of ways what the government can do they choose that. And that's the EUs fault?
portar1985@reddit
The official why and the actual why are very different. When they introduced 40,60 and 80 they also made the need for maintenance waaay lower than the 50,70, and 90 counterparts so safety disappears right there
csimonson@reddit
Now imagine the lane assist in a semi truck (lorry).
I won't ever buy one with that or adaptive cruise. That shit is dangerous in a truck.
celebral_x@reddit
I would SO mess with a car to not hear it
Green_Coast_6958@reddit
Tell me about it. I feel like it honestly encourages speeding. Hovering around the speed limit is a headache of constant beeping
Ouroborus23@reddit
So i drive a '23 Mercedes and it doesn't beep when I go over the limit, because I deactivated it once. So i'm not sure the EU-regulations are enforced even harder in the US, but it's not an issue in germany... ;)
portar1985@reddit
You’re driving the last year of cars not forcefully doing it, I have a 23 as well. It’s coming unfortunately
toonking23@reddit

FuckSpezzzzzzzzzzzzz@reddit
I agree on the knobs thing. They were usually designed well enough so that you could do the thing you want just by feel and not take your eyes off the road. A screen can't give you that feed back, and when everything is a sub menu that you have to navigate to before accessing it is just a nightmare.
Santa_Hates_You@reddit
Another ‘I hate screens’ post. How droll.
uberdosage@reddit
Don't forget I hate safety and all electronics are bad! Very new very exciting content
graytotoro@reddit
Electricity is dangerous witchcraft. Those power window switches, motors, and regulators add so much weight that I'll not buy a Miata unless it has manual windows, manual steering, and a carbon fiber body. Then I won't buy it because it's "too hard to daily drive", costs more than $500, and there are probably cars that can go faster.
hoogin89@reddit
So, experiment for you to do and enjoy and understand why so many hate screens in a car. I'll say screens for stuff like nav and audio are fine but everything else should be a button. Here is why:
Type 5 sentences on your phone dictated to you by someone else without ever looking at your phone. Not speech to text, none of that. Physically don't look at your phone and type 5 sentences. I will almost bet your five sentences are an incoherent mess.
Now go do the same at your computer with a keyboard. Odds are you're sentences come out much more coherent and possibly even perfect.
Now then why? Well humans rely on tactile feedback to complete tasks. Tablets do not offer this in any way. So when operating a two ton death machine, some of us like to be able to pay attention to what we are doing and still have the ability to change climate controls etc.
Nefilim314@reddit
I hate emissions regulations that make just the tiniest bit of impact so that our children might actually have a planet to inherit at the expense of my car having 540 horsepower instead of 556 horsepower 😡😡😡

I’m on the fence about screens. On one hand, my car doesn’t have a screen and I find it less distracting. I find many basic functions are easier to use than they are in newer cars. On the other hand, my wife’s car has a screen and I find both CarPlay and the rear backup camera to be terribly useful.

Electric parking brakes. In a manual transmission car, you rely on the parking brake for steep hill starts, and now this becomes far harder or the automatic hill hold glitches. I despise it in my Emira.
Cyanide72@reddit
Some manual cars come with hill start assist. My 2009 BMW has it, so presumably the technology has been around for a while. How it works is the car automagically applies brakes for around 2 seconds while the clutch is in and the car senses it’s either uphill or downhill. It’s more than enough time to slot the car into gear and take off without the need for the e-brake.
biggsteve81@reddit
And for some reason my automatic Subaru Legacy has hill start assist, which I have never found the need for.
89Hopper@reddit
My old 2001 Subaru Outback used to have it. It's been around for quite a while.
Winter_drivE1@reddit
Also, if you for some reason have an electrical problem with your car, such as, say, a loose battery connector that causes your car to intermittently lose electrical power upon being turned off, you have to sit there with your foot on the brake because you can't park your car without electricity. (The power came back and I got the loose connector fixed)
seantaiphoon@reddit
Or even simply if your battery dies you can't push the car to dump the clutch. Or move it to a better spot to jump it. Done it so many times in my 2000 camaro and 88 vette but my 20' civic will be a lemon the second it decides it needs a battery. Shame because it doesn't have to be that way.
Teslas have this issue with electronic parking brakes when the car losses power for whatever reason and it requires powering each corner individually at the connector to unlock them. Hence why the tow guys just drag them. Stupid.
DoWah@reddit
My BMW E70 has an emergency release for the parking brake in the trunk, do other cars with electric parking brake not have that?
seantaiphoon@reddit
Not to the extent of my knowledge and Google came up with nothing when I looked there after combing my owners manual. Honda says "Don't let your car die lol" especially when most civics are cvt and bricked anyways when it happens.
The car at least has to be in accessory mode for you to be able to disengage so absolutely useless with a dead battery. Hey at least they gave us a physical key to unlock the door to get the hood open to get at the battery. Some cars go that far to really fuck you over, including some Hypercars lol
You let a battery die in a locked Koenigsegg you better hope you know Christian Von Koenisegg yourself. Good thing I'm poor but I'm an advocate for good design regardless.

I never considered this? I mean, I don't want the damned thing anyway, but that's ridiculous.
seantaiphoon@reddit
It's good fun. Eventually you master it and start doing dumb stuff like reverse starts. As long as your key is set to ignition and you can get her rolling fast enough a battery is just a tool we invented for convenience.
screw_all_the_names@reddit
I have some bad news for you if you're American. You can dump the clutch on 99% of cars on the road anyway cause they're all autos.
seantaiphoon@reddit
Yup :(
I just like my party tricks for dead manuals and they took it from me!
screw_all_the_names@reddit
I drive an old manual civic. And I've had to pop the clutch several times due to dead battery or dead starter.
Robots_Never_Die@reddit
Just park it in gear and put the tire on the curb if it's so steep your engine won't hold it.
MidgetGroper@reddit
Can you park the car in gear?
Dapper-Conference367@reddit
My dad had a manual Audi with electric brake and it locked itself.
The mechanic just cut the cables and the car had no e-brake for like a week before the new piece arrived, he'd just put in 1st gear, our city is literally flat so no risk of it slipping away.
long-the-short@reddit
Had this exact issue the other day!
Weird two lanes with a one lane bridge and traffic lights either end. A guy broke down on the bridge so a few of us got out to help push.
Noooooooooope.
BEEPBOPIAMAROBOT@reddit
What drives me absolutely insane is that the parking brake on the Cayman is backwards. You push it to engage, and pull it to release. Every other car I've driven with a handbrake is pull up to engage, push down to release. I get it wrong every time I get in the damn car.
BuckManscape@reddit
I just drove a brand new f150 the other day. Stop start, hill hold on an automatic, and backwards electronic parking brake. It’s a nice truck I guess, but I really didn’t like those things.
Navaros313@reddit
Ford went wrong? My fusion is pull on push off...
goaelephant@reddit
You dont need the handbrake for a manual car, i admit i learned that way but i learned how not to use it
dickpics25@reddit
Yep. I only roll if I want to. (Like when some asshole pulls up super close. I love to hear them honk.)
Navaros313@reddit
I have and pump issues so when stopping hard I slide into neutral (and all winter long) in my auto. I like a bit of roll, makes me think that anyone who actually notices might think I somehow have a manual.
leedler@reddit
I’ve got an auto hold feature in the Mk8 Golf that really makes it easy - never had any slips, automatically engages at a full stop and only turns off when you get the clutch beyond the bite.
I think your issue is more of a Lotus problem than an e-brake problem lmao.
ANYTHING_WITH_WHEELS@reddit
Never once had an issue with the auto hold feature with my my6 GTI
int0xic@reddit
My Camaro also has hill assist. I don't like it. It only engages if you're on a hill and you press in the clutch while holding the brake. I got really really good at quickly releasing the brake, putting in the clutch, shifting to first, and taking off, all before the car rolls backwards.
vexx786@reddit
On my GT4 the parking brake releases it self when it feels the car start to move forward.
xanksnap@reddit

BogdanPradatu@reddit
I don't even unddrstand how these are legal. Parking brake should also be a safety feature, in case you lose normal brakes. 100% mechanical.
tdubya22@reddit
My car doesn’t have hill assist. If you pull and hold the electric handbrake switch towards you, you can engage the clutch / find the bite then release - it will work just like a manual handbrake.
orhantemerrut@reddit
Don't new manual cars have hill assist? My WRX would have at least 1 second of "grace period" for me to find the clutch point.
candyman505@reddit
Keep your foot on the brake and bring the clutch to the biting point then foot off brake onto gas quick
cincyaudiodude@reddit
My Chevy traverse has an electric parking brake that lets off as you press the gas, it's perfect for hill starts.

Bustable@reddit
Well, that's a fiat. Italians make beautiful cars but electronics, not so much.
And it's called Fix It Again Tony for a reason
gIOonNii@reddit
It doesn't. If anything, it gets easier since it disengages automatically when you give gas. Besides, you don't even need it, you can do hill starts without it.
skerpz@reddit
My GT4 has a “HOLD” light on the tach, but I have never seen it illuminate, or felt it work. That said, the e-parking brake automatically disengages when it feels the car start to move forward and it works great for hill starts, and makes them basically stress free.
TheAdventurousMan@reddit
VW put one of those on their B6 Passat and then got rid of it for the B7.
liberty@reddit
For me, it's just...who was asking for an electric parking brake? What are the benefits? Is it somehow (and I can't imagine how) cheaper or simpler?
Perfect_Cash_9639@reddit
Automatic engagement/disengagement gets drivers to actually use the thing instead of just sitting on the pawl (for autos). EPB is also used for hill hold control and may automatically provide some additional deceleration in the event of a brake system failure.
They can also replace the drum brake used for manual park brakes, and free up some center console/footwell space I guess.
TunaOnWytNoCrust@reddit
Oh geez that's not really an issue lol. At some point you really shouldn't need to rely on holding your e-brake just to get going on a hill.
penguinchem13@reddit
I have never used the parking brake on a hill and I've been driving stick for 20 years.
riverturtle@reddit
The difficult truth is that you shouldn’t really need to use the e brake ever. If you rely on it then you should wean yourself off anyway.
aquatone61@reddit
My DSG GTI has a manual parking brake but uses the ABS module to hold the front brakes for hill start assist. I know Porsche does this as well.
DaBluedude@reddit
That does sound fucking annoying. I'll take the emira for you so you don't have to suffer any more. Is there anything specific about the car you absolutely love? Some foybel or trait that you just can't get enough of?
fullock@reddit
It's one of the best cars I've ever driven, so that's just a minor complaint. It's got the handling of a McLaren with a Toyota engine that's easy to fix or replace (I track a lot, so engines are consumables), it looks gorgeous, and the interior is a really nice place to be. Downside is that Lotus cars are flaky, so lots of random stuff unrelated to the engine breaks.
Frog_Prophet@reddit
Maybe if youre a noob. If you know what you’re doing, you can jet give it an extra rev and get the clutch out to the friction point real fast.
fullock@reddit
I've been driving manual transmission cars since the 1980's, so I'm not a n00b and in most cases, I don't need the parking brake for a hill start. Now, say you're parallel parking it on a steep hill in San Francisco (which I do regularly), or some bozo is right on your tail and you want a little insurance to not tap them, or your car has a light weight clutch which has zero forgiveness, then that parking brakes comes in handy.
cthompson07@reddit
I love the electric parking brake in my Camaro. It can be used for hill starts (it has auto hill start assist as well but still). If you try to drive with the parking brake on, it will stop you, but you can keep on the gas and it will auto disengage.
Ravnard@reddit
I've never used the parking brake. Is that the common way to do it in the US?
FuzzelFox@reddit
In my S80 the parking brake disengages automatically when you press the gas. I've actually used this once when I was at a traffic light on a REALLY steep grade. I was worried about accidentally moving from the brake to the gas so quickly that I might spin the tires and slide into the car behind me lol. Then I remembered I could just engage the parking brake and as soon as the light turned green I moved my foot to the gas like normal and took off without rolling back.
JaKr8@reddit
Our jaguar does this seamlessly. However my Acura requires a little step on the throttle to release the brake if you don't do it manually, and the car does lurch a tiny bit. And it has enough torque to launch you a little bit, whereas when I have the turbo motor, what should I say a lot more to work than the na engine which won't launch you.
returningSorcerer@reddit
yeah, pushing down the 3rd pedal in my ma's auto colorado for e-brake is like "that's it?" whereas in my manual civic it feels weighty
i_imagine@reddit
foot brake is not that much different than a hand brake and both have been around for decades. I personally don't like foot brakes as much but they're still a mechanical parking brake and still reliable

Electric door latches.
What’s laughable is that manufacturers know that these latches can fail for whatever reason like a dead battery or some electrical gremlin, so they also install a manual latch near the electric latch or at least within arm’s reach of it.
If you make an electric latch and make a manual latch as a failsafe if the electric latch stopped working, what the fuck was the bloody point of the electric latch in the first place?

In addition to flatscreens and auto start-stop (which I hate too), another thing I hate is the excessive amount of interior lighting that I find very annoying. A lot of new cars come with these led light strips running along the dash, and not only they’re just for show (since they serve no practical purpose) but in some cars I’ve driven they are so poorly designed that they reflect on windows and windshield significantly reducing visibility at night. I’ve seen this happening even on luxury vehicles (like BMW and Mercedes) that used to pride themselves of their ergonomic design centered around the driver.

die-microcrap-die@reddit
It might be very difficult, since it could be tied to the manufacturer in a way that only they can produce such replacements.
I remember some older hondas that had their radio screens split in 2 and merged with the AC, so you couldn’t replace them at all.
My old 2003 Accord and the following model were that bad.

I hate a few things about modern cars, but the one feature that sends my blood pressure to the Moon is that rotary knob shifter. That stupid engine stop feature at traffic lights, and overly invasive safety tech. A friend test drove a brand new Volvo (XC90 I think) and they hated it because the car’s systems just got in the way for simple things.
KingBowser24@reddit
God that engine stop thing bothers me so much. I test drove a newer Chevy Malibu a few years back and that feature was the main reason I didn't want it.
It's supposed to be economical, but I would think that repeatedly killing and restarting the engine would just waste more gas, and possibly wear down the engine faster.
dont-YOLO-ragequit@reddit
IIRC starting a warm car take no more fuel than 7 seconds of Idling so there is no wasted gas as they obviously did the math.
Also start stop cars have beefed up starters along with specific stop positions to put the engine in so it fires right away with less stress on that beefed up starter.
The downsides to startstop is that people driving automatic cars now have to anticipate green lights and stop- go traffic by a second (by lifting the brake pedal earlier) if they want to take off with a heavier foot and that weird jerking you can get from having to creep forward.
IThatAsianGuyI@reddit
Oh no, drivers have to pay more attention. The horror!
But that's also not true in better implementations. Cars with auto brake-hold allow you to plip the throttle to turn the engine back on while remaining completely stationary. No weird herky-jerky creep forward required.
Come to a stop at a light, auto brake-hold engages, press harder on the brake pedal to kill the engine. Plip the throttle before the light turns green to start the engine while staying still because of brake-hold, then go when light turns green. It's really, really not that hard but like half of r/cars drives used, decade+ old cars because that's all they can afford, but will willingly shit all over nice modern features they can't adapt to and call it bad.
superluig164@reddit
It does neither of those things. It's certainly an inconvenient feature, and it's often implemented poorly, but don't get upset about details you don't understand. It saves gas, and has pretty much no impact on engine wear.

It's no fun and what if I accidentally turn the shifter instead of something else like the AC, what will happen 😭 Also cars look so plain now, not all of the new cars are as plain as a Tesla. But without the buttons and stuff, it's so lame looking. And personally I don't like it.

Electronic door poppers.
I was into street trucks in the late 90's, and it was common to shave your door handles and install poppers. They were cool but were such a pain in the ass whenever they would fail, and it was tribal knowledge that you did not install them on your daily driver. You always had to route a safety mechanical release and hide it somewhere like inside the front fenderwell or something in case your battery died.
Now, they are everywhere on new cars and create such a headache when the car has no power and you can't open the god damn doors.

ElusiveMeatSoda@reddit
I nearly got in an accident driving a rental Titan because of this. Cruise control on in the right lane, approaching a super slow U-Haul, and I started merging into the left lane to pass them. Halfway through my merge, the overactive auto braking slammed on the brakes. The car behind me nearly rear-ended me, and I got a long horn and the middle finger for suddenly braking from 75 mph to 60 mph halfway through my merge.

Automatic transmission cars that won't let you exit the vehicle with the engine off and the transmission in neutral. They will literally engage park if return off the engine and open the door. I understand what they are thinking with that system but, as a mechanic, when I pull into the service bay I'm usually going to lift the vehicle and since they are all a bit different regarding lift points I often have to roll the car forward or back a few inches. I don't like to exit the vehicle running in neutral so often I will need to turn off the car, check my setup while getting my hands dirty, wash hands, get back in the car start it move it two inches... And then while I'm working I need to be able to turn the wheels in neutral. This means stopping and getting on the computer or you tube to find out how to manually put the car in neutral. Not like I can just unfasren the shift lever from underneath since it has no lever. Maddening I tell you.

On my mom’s newer Mazda it augments the driving so much it’s almost dangerous. It doesn’t let you cross lines on the road, fine except when you’re trying to make a left on a main road, and then it will limit your acceleration speed for whatever reason, so when you’re flooring it trying to turn before the incoming traffic hits you the car will barely react in time. I think a car should let you drive it off a cliff or into a wall if you really wanted it to. Analog mechanical functionality will be missed in the next generation of electronic steering and driving assistance.

Alternatively, if you buy a car that has heated seats, it’s really nobody’s business when you decide to use them. Do you pay to use your oven? They built the heated seats and sold them to you. It has nothing to do with them anymore. You pay for gas to power the seats and so on.

I wanna say this, Hyundai offers their bluelink service for free on new vheicles (plus version with more advanced features its paid after 3 years but the basic features are yours) and that makes sense to me since its a service, remote start via the internet (you can still do the button remote start on the FOB), take pictures of your car and receive them on your phone using the built in cameras, and other stuff are ok as a service.
but offering hardware things inside the vehicle, functionality like heated seats as a paid subscription? get the hell out of there, there is no server or maintenance cost on the manufacturer end and it feels like a robbery.
CTMechE@reddit
Totally agree. I have no objections to the principle of charging for an active service. I have a 2019 GM vehicle that I bought new, and while I feel like I got short-changed with only 3 months of included service, I understand it. I don't subscribe though. My car still has key fob remote start that works fine without it, but the pessimist in me thinks that theres the potential for that to be removed from the fob in favor of subscription only.
The only real gripe is that GM still locks away the airbag deployment 911 location call behind an active OnStar subscription. While it does fit the description of a service, it is a simple automated one that is rarely used. Moreover, even when it is used, it is likely only once per vehicle, so it's frustrating that it isn't included.

Auto braking. My current Volvo XC90 will SMASH the brake when the parking sensors think you’re about to hit something. Of course, being Volvo, it’s over-cautious to the point of ridicule. When I say it smashes the brake, it’s so aggressive it makes you think you have actually hit something. To make things worse, dirty parking sensors cause false positives. A guy waiting for my parking spot clearly thought I was utterly incompetent because of my apparent emergency braking twice when leaving the parking space into a perfectly safe area.

Climate control on the screen. Especially if all the climate controls are on the screen, even the temp setting. I used to be okay since I would just set it to auto but ever since I got my Miata, I absolutely do not understand why normally used functions are on a screen. Ik, it's costs, but it's so dumb and borderline dangerous
A_Puddle@reddit
Yes the ND Miata has nearly perfect control interfaces in terms of the buttons/knobs and especially the dial knob for controlling the infotainment. Android Auto via the knob honestly completely evades nearly every distraction downside of a touchscreen (although Android Auto has recently made the experience worse by changing the flow between various on screen controls for no discernable reason).
Dedicated buttons to jump between the native Nav, radio, and saved infotainment presets, plus the dedicated back button, volume knob/mute button, all of which is centered around the infotainment knob. Whoever worked on their controls UX did an excellent job and it really shows on a day-to-day basis.
Lane change warning annoying? Turn it off once and forget it exists. The only thing I would change is how long it takes for Android Auto to connect and launch on start-up, it is genuinely annoying, but also a relatively small problem given how well everything else works.
alphachruch@reddit
I won't say it's perfect. Mazda disables the touchscreen when the car is moving and sometimes it really is easier to just tap a button than try to scroll to it. But yeah, everything else is placed very easily and the knobs all have tactile feedback which is always appreciated. I have lane change on, but on the lowest setting because I have trouble knowing how far right I am but yeah that can be disabled with a physical button.

I don't need or want any of the following:
Cylinder deactivation
Push button start (key is better HMI, push button start is bullshit and dangerous)
Touch screen anything, (physical buttons for all controls is best)
Wheels over 17 inches (ride worse and more expensive tires, and negatively impacts fuel economy)
Any sort of shifter than isn't standard lever with PRNDL in that order. (making these changes are dangerous and gimicky, it doesn't solve anything either)
This is why I drive old cars, because we've reached peak car, and everything since, except increased safety, radar adaptive cruise control, etc, has been marketing driven bullshit. Basically, what I"m saying is, most cars today are too expensive and too full of bullshit you don't actually need. One of the best cars on sale today is Nissan Versa base 5-speed manual. You can get a Nissan Versa 5-speed manual for about 18k out the door, and it does absolutely everything you need, better than any 90s Japanese Econobox, and adjusting for inflation, it's a freaking bargain of the decade.

CVTs. The point was to have something smaller and cheaper to transmit power. But in reality, they're expensive and aren't very good at the one job they're built for. Slowly, people who would rather have a manual transmission are losing the ability to choose that. CVTs break all the time, and their inexpensive cost never helps the consumer. They barely do any good with fuel economy. They just seem like a cheap way to save money on costs (only for the manufacturer) and to make the used car market worse so more people buy new cars.
Forum_Browser@reddit
Let's see, rev hang is a major pain in the ass. I also hate how almost every new vehicle on the road has this design where the window on the rear doors swoops up at the bottom, and the roofline swoops down at the back to create a nearly useless rear window where you could hide an entire semi when you do a shoulder check. I know modern cars are stronger, and safer in accidents, but if they had good visibility like the cars from 20+ years ago, all this blind spot monitoring technology would be mostly useless if you are capable of doing a shoulder check.
Oh and electric parking brakes and auto start stop engine technology are awful.

Having a map big enough to quickly glance at, with traffic information is way more useful than buttons. Adjusting my air vents is now better too from a touch screen.
Drunken_Hamster@reddit
Unfortunately, the list of problems with cars that have had generations designed/released post-2013-2015 or so is quite long, and very few cars are still truly good despite these things. Usually only expensive performance/enthusiast/status cars, and even then it doesn't mean they're entirely likable.
For all the improvements to material comfort and whatnot, the downsides are atrocious for long-term ownership; and long-term ownership is one of the best ways to reduce impact on the environment. The three R's, remember? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Four R's if you count "Repair" as a separate category.
The auto industry basically does none of that and then actively lobbies against it. That and NIMBYS are why we in America don't even have affordable/accessible cities/towns/suburbs that you can live in entirely without a car. Certainly not enough of them are up to spec and active enough (and without being filled to the brim with criminals and outcasts) to be considered "common" that is.

Not necessarily a "feature" but serviceability. Early 2000s cars were simple and easy to service, now they are so jammed with wires and tubes it's hard to get to anything
MC_10@reddit
The gas cap door opens with just a push now. Anyone can get in.
I also hate having nowhere to put my keys. I'm used to putting them in my back pocket, but now I can't do that or it'd be super uncomfortable sitting on them.
A_Puddle@reddit
Wasn't this always the case? Or did sum have you slip a finger and and the pull out? In any event it seems like a lot of new cars lock the gas cap door when the car is locked which I don't think was a common feature (maybe at all) until relatively recently (last 20 years).
MC_10@reddit
Idk about all car models but there used to be a button or lever on the driver side inside that would release the gas cap door and pop it open a bit. I guess if the gas cap door is locked while the car is locked that's safe enough. I never thought about that since I always open it when it's unlocked.

Black interiors, especially with a black headliner. Hot and claustrophobic. Give me some choice. I loved the dark red that I had in my Rabbit GTI. I miss the greens, blues, plaid, houndstooth, pascha and other interesting interiors we used to have. Allow some contrast, too. A green car with a red interior is drop-dead gorgeous. More cloth, less vinyl, even if it’s harder to clean (mine is rather filthy right now TBH). Not all of us want leather, either, and that can be due to comfort or ethical reasons.
I’m lucky that the car I really wanted, with its rare 6MT, came with beige cloth in two out of the three colors offered with the MT (8 or 10 colors available if you wanted the AT or higher trim levels). My dad had to have a car brought in from across the country when he wanted grey leather instead of black cloth, but he’s waited before to get the color combo he wanted.

Touchscreens, hate them with a passion, locking out features behind a paywall i.e. on my focus can't use Alexa to initiate a stream from my phone from the car head unit but can use android auto. "To do that needs a connected devices plan" at like 5 or 10 quid a month.....get fucked on that count ford frankly.....collision warning detection that randomly goes off when nothing is anywhere near me and almost causes a crash.
Top spec of their non ultra high performance model still has a pile of options missing - power tailgate, park assist(which is on my folks lower spec seat ateca (VW something or other ), adaptive cruise control etc, using my phone as a key not available in the UK, which is annoying as it means I have to carry both and when I'm on a beach day it's another thing to carry and possibly lose. My phone is waterproof and way more secure.
Other weird things - remote start either selects auto or last settings, you can't say select - custom - AC set to 18c heated seats on (as my back is killing me and the heat would help), heated steering wheel off, stereo volume to xyz.
Things I would like - power tailgate with tailgate cam that can use the proximity of the key or an authorised phone to recognise human and pop open the tailgate, but won't do it for random people - key detected within X feet or something rather than waving your foot underneath and included in the price, not a stupidly expensive option
NathanCelica02@reddit
Adaptive cruise control. Nobody seems to be actually overtaking anymore. People are driving past eachother with half a mile an hour speed difference and when one person slows down, all other cars start slowing down aswell instead of keeping the same speed and going around them, which means you eventually get boxed in when you want to overtake a lorry for example.
A_Puddle@reddit
I am constantly annoyed by this, as it results in all these little bunches of traffic, when if they would just pass quickly and get over the whole little bunches up line could sort themselves out and spread out within a few minutes.
However I had not connected this to adaptive cruise control at all, it does seem like this could very well be at play.

Subaru's Eye Sight, to be fair my dealership bought the car back off me but way to ruin a car
A_Puddle@reddit
Had a Forester rental for a week last year and the eye-sight system was infuriating. Would y'all at me when I turned my head to check cross traffic rolling up to a turn, when glancing at the rear-view to check where cars were around me, when looking down at the dash to check my speed, and sometimes even when looking straight ahead!
That plus the fact the car shook like it was giving up the ghost Everytime the engine restarted at a traffic light were really frustrating.
What really sealed the deal on the whole car definitely not being worth owning was the fact that I had to waste time turning these systems off everytime I got in the car, absolutely unacceptable owner/user experience.

DSG stick. Now, I don’t HATE it, but the fact it’s so finicky still sometimes takes me by surprise. When I first bought a car I thought something was wrong because I accidentally switched to sports mode, and my engine was revving like crazy.
Then I spent a WEEK trying to figure out how to switch between sports and drive mod, I was literally switching to neutral and back to drive before I realized you can pull it back to switch. And yesterday, I FINALLY realized pushing it to the right switches to semi-manual shifting where you push it up and down to switch gears. The reason I realized is that my engine stalled and my car grinded to complete halt after I accidentally pushed the stick right. Luckily nobody was driving behind me.
It’s very counter-intuitive, hard to figure out, and driving a manual stick is still much more fun.
aquatone61@reddit
Sorry but it sounds like you need to read the manual that came with your car. Your engine did not stall and cause your car grind to a halt because you pushed the shifter right, that’s simply not how that works in a DSG car or even a regular torque converter automatic VW/Audi/Porsche with the same exact shifter setup. As you slow down the transmission will downshift if you don’t even in manual mode, same with upshifting at redline if you don’t shift.

Lane departure correction. If it was 100% accurate, it would be fine, but every time it jerks the wheel in a direction because it sees a crack instead of a line I lose my fucking mind.
A_Puddle@reddit
The idea that jerking the wheel against the drivers control is considered a safety feature is insane to me. If something like this is so widely needed that the math bears out it being a net safety improvement really just means we need much harder driver license tests and/or re-test requirements.

I recently saw that for the first time in an ID3 and i was wondering if it wasn't cheaper to just put in two sets of similar window-buttons rather than adding a "new" button to switch front/back. That really does not make sense at all...
A_Puddle@reddit
I think it probably is cheaper, because the wiring is largely the same, just with a switch at the buttons to jump from one to the other. So it saves them the cost of a button less the cost of the switching hardware. So I get how it saves them money, I just can't imagine why they would do it when the cost savings has got to be in the range of like $2-$5, but makes the experience feel cheaper to the customer/owner.

I've come around on screens and push button start. Initially I was old school and wanted only buttons and an actual key, but it has become nearly unavoidable if you want a new car. I have to say that after living with the convenience of a screen for AndriodAuto/CarPlay and 360-view cameras, and being able to keep my key in my pocket and just walking up, unlocking, and starting the vehicle hands-free of a key is really nice, I don't want to go back to not having it. My vehicle is one of the ones that still supplements the screen with physical HVAC controls, heated seats, and some radio buttons though, so I would still avoid models that put everything in the screen. Some of the tech has won me over when integrated well.
New trends I strongly dislike are auto start/stop, recessed door handles, and the aforementioned vehicles that completely replace all physical buttons with screen menus.

Just had a business trip and had a new Outback, let me count the ways, lol. I filled the bingo card of all the typical ones people already laid out. Auto stop/start is terrible, and was particularly jarring and rough on that car. And it's not just on a button on that car to turn off, it's buried in a menu on the slow, unresponsive touchscreen tablet central screen that always took more than a minute to start working responsively in the morning when I'm trying to turn all the annoying tech off. Oh, and it's fun having controls I can't see with my polarized sunglasses on when the morning sun is blasting my face in bumper to bumper traffic. Then I have to turn off late keep assist, I always have hated radar cruise, and a new one is driver alertness assistance, where it yells at you if you take your eyes off the road for more than 6 seconds, which is a necessity with the slow tablet controls. Once you turn all that shit off, it's a pretty good car. But I couldn't wait to be rid of having to wait 30 seconds for the tablet to be responsive enough to be ale to go through 3 menus and turn all that shit off again EVERY time I turned the car on.

I've never been one to focus on how efficient my car is, as long as it's not an excessive money dump (diesels) in terms of fuel and emissions. I've been able to drive several cars with this feature and more times than not, it results in terrible throttle response time and a huge delay in power delivery depending on the situation.

Some of the display is bright, some, not so bright. So if you dim the entire thing, there may be some things which are no longer visible or able to see. I rented an SUV a while back, and if you made the light intensity enough to see the gas gauge, it was like having a spotlight on your face. Turn it down, and I wouldn't notice if I was getting close to empty.
Also, instrument panels made so that sunlight from the sides makes the clear plastic reflect the light, so you can't see the display. Have to wonder, doesn't anyone ever check the vehicle design before putting it into production? This would be easily noticable with one drive around a block to check the effects of sunlight on their design.

Capacitive controls everywhere. I have a hard enough time keeping my phone screen clean. I don't want in my car too.
Lord_Ka1n@reddit
Touch screens, backup cameras, push to start, auto stop start, lane departure or proximity warning beeps, lane keep assist, electric parking brakes, any "smart" features, automatic braking, features as a subscription, digital gauge clusters, auto cruise control, fake engine noise, tiny Turbo engines, any kind of cylinder deactivation.
I could probably think of more if I was reminding of other things. I really just hate most of what cars have added in the last like 15 years.

Non-standardised centre console screens. If you want to add bluetooth/AA/carplay to a car from the mid-2000s or earlier you can just go out and buy a double-DIN unit and splice some wires. Now, when the stereo becomes obsolete, or if you just want to upgrade to something with better EQ and amplification, you either need to buy a whole new car, or hope like heck that someone makes a (likely stupid expensive) bespoke conversion kit for your specific make, model, year, and trim package.
Give me my double-DIN back, you bastards. Alternatively, we need a more modern standard (and someone to enforce it) that allows aftermarket radios to integrate with your wacko size screen while retaining the first-party AC controls, reverse camera, etc.

Mandatory network connection. Your car won't let you use equipment (BMW) or won't even start (Fisker) if it can't talk to a server first.
Good luck when you got no reception, or when the servers get updated/shut down.
(It might be other brands doing that too).
F-14cobra@reddit
I agree with the previous comments but I haven't seen anything about how some turn signals are now mounted so low in the rear bumper. I have gotten upset driving my girlfriends RX Lexus because it is higher up and I think the person in front of me is just merging like a dick but they actually did nothing wrong just that they drive a car with poorly designed signals!
anothersilentpartner@reddit
This so much! KIA and Hyundai are doing it recently for “style”. Granted I have now pay more attention to the front car’s badge in tightly packed stop and go traffic but I sure as shit won’t buy any K/H just because this stupid design.
ryencool@reddit
I love the screen on my tesla, and prefer it to any other car i have had in my 42 years on this planet. What I really don't like is the loud noises if I'm close to something. I don't believe in a all these nanny devices to take control for the human driving the car. You still need to be paying attention 24/7 as your operating a multi thousand pounds vehicle that can easily kill someone. So when I'm going through tight spaces, navigating a tiny parking structure etc..I very much dislike all the beeping and yelling at me. With all the cameras, I can see how close I am, thank you.

JP147@reddit
I hate non-standard headlight housings used on modern cars. They are usually an ugly shape, plastic so they go yellow after a few years, easily damaged in an accident and expensive to replace. And each model, year and trim has its own headlight design so it can be difficult to find the correct one to replace it with.
Cars looked much better when they used a selection of the 3 (later 4) standard sizes. 7" round, small round, small rectangle or big rectangle.
I am not saying cars should go back to sealed beams, H4 bulbs or others can be used in housings made to these standard sizes.
rollercoaster1337@reddit
Almost all of them! I do like Apple car play/android auto and some (not all) safety features like parking sensors and better airbags but apart from that?
Adaptive headlights, electronic parking brake, lack of manual transmission, huge touchscreen, dumb subscriptions, (in some brands) lack of new sedan or coupe options just suvs everywhere, lane keep assist, electronic button closing trunks, etc…
I really feel like late 90s/early 00s was the peak of cars. Maybe the EV era will be another peak but I highly doubt it so far
StayStrong888@reddit
Lack of real buttons sucks. I'd rather turn a knob or even push a lever left and right for hvac... and same for radio controls.
That start stop sucks too. Feels so annoying and it turns off the A/C when it's activated.

Auto windscreen wipers. Few spots of rain and they turn into helicopter blades!
NathanCelica02@reddit
I was very happy that i could program them to a normal adjustable interval on my old Lexus. This wasnt possible with my Mazda 6 which had the opposite of what you experience. It took ages for them to turn on, so in ended up putting a worn wiper blade on the passenger side so it would leave water streaks on the windscreen causing the wipers to turn on faster 🙃

This might be unpopular (genuinely not sure), but I despise auto cruise control. I had it on a rental and thought it would be great, but every time I used it the car would slow down to make excessive room for the car in front of me, which would make the person behind me overtake, which would close the gap , which would make the ACC slow down more, which would make the person behind me overtake, which would close the gap, which would make the ACC slow down more, which would make the person behind me overtake which would—
jbgator@reddit
Not to insult your intelligence in case you already knew, but you can usually change the follow distance. Mine has 4 levels and I usually have mine between 1 and 2. The only time I really have to give it gas to close a gap is if someone accelerates pretty hard in front of me.
dumahim@reddit
Yep. I generally like it, but hills mess with mine too much if I'm behind someone. Starts falling behind/slowing down and then the gravity takes hold going up the hill and cruise control has to drop a gear to pick up speed again. It's wonderful on flat ground though.
harsh-chaudhari@reddit
i actually like touchscreens for the center console, but manufacturers should find a perfect balance b/w physical & digital buttons and should also work on adding haptic feedback system like Porsche
what i hate is over-luxury in luxury cars, like having a touchscreen for every passenger, this makes the car designs overwhelming
thebigbossyboss@reddit
Auto dimming rear view mirrors. This is not better. There’s way too many factors here to determine if I dim. Just give me the knob

Solid-Tumbleweed-981@reddit
Push button or turn signal size transmission shifters. Give me a real shifter. 2.Tacky screens that look like an after thought. 3. Stack head lights and tail lights meaning if a light bulb goes out you have to take half the car apart. This LED strip along the entire hood is also tacky, after a year it's gonna die and make your car look stupid 4. The automatic breaking that screams at you constantly. I have mine turned off but it still beeps loudly 5. CUVs being labeled as SUV. No it's a hatchback on stilts a a lawnmower engine that drives like shit and gets the gas mileage of a V8 6. Lawnmower engines w a turbo simply to meet emissions regulations
chlronald@reddit
Anything that sacrifice reliability for emissions: EGR or PCV without port injection, or cylinder deactivation, thinner cost cutting lighter suspension parts and drivetrain.
Hate every electronic system tie to one another and if something break and it will, it's really hard to troubleshoot and diagnosis.
Hate paywall, every brand is gutting some feature and put it behind a paywall/subscription, such as remote start.
i-like-foods@reddit

Addition of screens to replace physical buttons. I know this is basically cost saving for manufacturers but I’m sure it was initially pushed as a feature
aabajian@reddit
Screen that blocks even a fraction of the windshield. Compare where the screen is in the GR86 vs GR Corolla. I won’t buy a car with an obstruction screen (I just traded my GR86 for a Land Cruiser 1958, both have well-positioned screens).
SockeyeSTI@reddit
The screen isn’t my issue but putting things that should have physical buttons on the screen is. The seat warmers is n my new Ranger are in the screen, but so is the steering wheel warmer. So you have to touch them be icon just for both to pop up, then tap on the steering wheel and 3 times on the seat to turn them off. It’s so much more inconvenient and distracting at speed. With a physical button you can feel around without taking your eyes off the road, this not so much.
Then, important driveline options are also tied to the screen like the lockers. Be a shame if the screen froze and you needed something from one of the menus.
Auto start/stop should be something you can display permanently if you’d like from the factory.

Auto high beams. Not the adaptive style that turns off parts shining at other cars while lighting up the road. That is a good one. The regular one which turns them on and off works not so well. I personally would turn high beams off sooner than the auto system, whilst not flashing other drivers as much. Also, on some cars, the stalk goes to the high beam detent, so it is hard to flash your brights at someone to warn them/communicate with them.
nomno1@reddit
While we’re all talking about electronic parking brakes, I believe that we should address parking assist functions as one unbearable feature in new cars
willembahh2@reddit

BlackCatFurry@reddit
Only having a screen on the center console. It's not practical to try to fiddle with the screen in the winter when you have to have gloves on to not freeze your fingers off the first 15 minutes of the drive. Buttons and knobs all the way. And the screens don't even work reliably with cold fingers or at all with gloves, unless you specifically find touch screen winter gloves.
