What to do in the DFW area with my young adult children?

I’m new to Dallas and TX altogether myself.
My kids (24M, 24M, 20F) are visiting next week from Wisconsin and staying 5 days in town.

We are going to the Fair on Saturday, but have no other solid plans.

What are some of the must see or must do things in the DFW or nearby area that we are not going to want to miss?

Ok. I keep hearing about the Stockyards.

Can you explain to me what it is, as if I was 5 years old. I just don’t get exactly what Stockyards is.

Basically, it's a side of Ft. Worth (basically the North) where y'all can drive, park your car, walk up and down the street, go eat, do some shopping. At a certain time they have a cattle drive through the streets. Also, Sundance Square is fun, but go on the weekend. Free parking!

Ok, so basically Stockyards is just the name of a fun neighborhood in FW?

It’s a historic neighborhood that was a prominent rose for cattle drives. It looks western and the buildings are OLD.

Meow Wolf was so cool! I can’t wait for my daughter to visit so we can go.

If they’re into sports, a trip to JerryWorld in Frisco might be fun.

W’s library is at SMU. The campus is beautiful and the surrounding neighborhoods have wonderful old trees and architecture. Highland Park Village is nearby for fancy window shopping.

Someone else suggested White Rock Lake. The arboretum is there and is beautiful.

Food wise, I’m obsessed with Eataly. I live 45 minutes away or I might be there every day. A long-time and well-loved Italian store is Jimmy’s Food Store. The last time my daughter visited we went to both. I love Central Market on Lovers Ln, too. A splurge dinner at Fearing’s would be memorable and delicious.

The museums downtown are very good if you’re into those. The DMA’s permanent exhibits are excellent and there almost always is a touring or special exhibit too.

Arboretum is so beautiful this time of the year! Reunion tower for 360 view of Dallas. Farmers Market is nice in the morning (weekends) and they can get souvenirs in the shed. Mandatory stop at Bucee’s (Denton, Royse City, Terrel). Fort Worth stockyards, cow cattle crossing at 11 am and 4 pm on Sundays (I think the whole weekend actually but make sure you check their website).

If they’re football fans definitely the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and area surrounding, Rangers stadium is nearby too.

If you’re going to Fort Worth, visit the Water Gardens in Downtown. Fort Worth has some wonderful museums, and the zoo is one of the best in the country! I highly recommend visiting the Kimbell Art Museum. Up at the Stockyards is Billy Bobs, which claims to be the world’s largest honkytonk. They have multiple bars, a mechanical bull, live music, huge dance floor, and restaurant.

The Sixth Floor Museum In Downtown Dallas is money well spent, then you can walk to Reunion Tower to take in a nice view of the city. After that, take the streetcar to Bishop Arts for dinner and after dinner dessert or drinks. You can always Uber back to your hotel or car if you’re running late.

If you are sports fans, you can schedule a tour of Jerry World In Arlington (Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium). I haven’t been but my in-laws have taken the tour and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Definitely take in some Texas BBQ. You really can’t go wrong with any of the recommendations in the Askdfw thread. It’s all good 😊.

Something we recently did and had a lot of fun was going to the drag races in Ferris, which is south of Dallas. You will have to check their website to see when they’re open, but we had a blast: Xtreme Raceway Park. The place was packed on a Saturday night and it’s family friendly!

For a casual afternoon/evening you can go to Andretti at Grandscape and finish up at The Truckyard

After the fair go to Klyde Warren Park nearby and just rest on the lawn in the sunshine. You can take in the city views and there are food trucks all day if you don’t eat at the fair. Also nearby, cross the bridge to the Trinity Overlook Park, it’s very popular for skyline views and photos. It’s next to Trinity Groves where there are more restaurants and outdoor hangout areas.
