Relocate to Canada or Germany

Hi I am 28 . I work at a big software company and I have an opportunity to relocate to Canada or Germany. My question is where is it better for software engineers? I mean from financial perspective. I know that Germany has high taxes but on the other hand Canadian cost of living is pretty high. I know my company will decrease my current salary to the average salary. Which country make it more attractive to buy a house or to invest in stocks?

Tech is doing good in Canada. Just the fact Canada is across the border to the biggest tech market is a game changer. Many Canadians myself including working remotely for the US-based companies. The pay is pretty good. The cost of living will depend on location. I personally moved out of Vancouver to a smaller city called Chilliwack which is 1-1.5h drive from Vancouver. Housing is half the price. On a single income I can support a family in there living a good life.
I don’t have any personal experience on Germany but my friend moved out of Vancouver to Hamburg, Germany and struggles to find a job there at the moment.

How do you work remotely for a U.S. Company? Do they pay you less than their american employees? Is this possible from, let's say, germany for example?
ElijahSavos@reddit
That’s easy. A US-based company sets up a corp in Canada so that they can legally employ me and pay taxes. Typically Canadian get payed less but it depends on the individual company. In my case US and Canada are considered a common North American market where they bill clients the same rate so the pay is also the same and typically based on the currency conversion at the time of you signing you go contract. For example is pay is 100k USD, you get paid 140k CAD.
We do have offices in many countries including Germany so you can work for US company remotely from Germany. I don’t know what pay is going to be in Germany, I assume it should be identical to the US. For some other counties pay could be lower, for example we charge clients 50% less for resources from India or Mexico.

Thank you so much for the detailled answer! I appreciate it a lot. Do you have a tip or advice where i can find such companies?
mostytoast@reddit
If you have a US salary in Canada sure you're doing good. Canadian companies pay less on average than US ones and in cad dollars. So in a good case $110-150k CAD. ~30% pay cut vs USD. $200k a year and you gotta live in Chilliwack to afford a single-detached home. Not saying it's worse than Germany, but it's not the US.
ElijahSavos@reddit
Also true. We’re in trouble for sure if you need to get creative to live a good life.

Thank you man you answered so many questions for me
ghostlovescore14@reddit
Depending on where in Canada and where in Germany?
artten12380@reddit (OP)
I can work remote but I want to be close to the offices. So Toronto , Montreal Canada or Berlin Frankfurt Munich stuttgrat
ElijahSavos@reddit
I’m not a big fan of bigger cities, but Toronto is really cool. I visited Montreal, but didn’t get what the hype about that city was. Toronto will grind you a bit but will set you for life career and money-wise.
Cultural-Pickle-6711@reddit
Lived in Toronto for 30 years. Hated it most of that time. Cost of living is insane. City is crowded and dispersed at the same time. You're constantly surrounded by people but there's no community. To go from one point of interest to another might require a 20 min drive. It is a modern hellscape. Visit before you move.
mostytoast@reddit
Financially and housing-wise I don't think there's much difference. Do you want to live in a German city or Canadian city? Closer to Europe or america? Are you okay with it being -20 in the winter time? Montreal and Toronto cold af. Two very different options, just depends what city/culture you'd rather be in.

I see. Thank you
South-Beautiful-5135@reddit
Where are you from?
artten12380@reddit (OP)
Israel
dxmforall@reddit
Then you better not go to Berlin, Berlin is controlled by Arab gangs and woke left people that hate Israel. Met an Israeli six years ago at the airport in Berlin, who had lived in Berlin for ten years, bought back all the houses that the Nazis took away from his grandparents during the Second World War. He had sold everything and left Berlin, said it’s unbearable the daily anti-semitism…and now it’s much much much worse….
ElijahSavos@reddit
Lol Downvotes by place of residence is a new low on Reddit haha
ElijahSavos@reddit
Oh great! If you ever decide to come to Canada, welcome! I have many friends from Israel. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions!
NiceGuy531@reddit
100% Germany, as a Canadian.
artten12380@reddit (OP)
Can u know why?
Adahla987@reddit
For the love of god…. Germany. You’re never going to be able to afford a house there but neither will anyone else. Every major city has passable English, public transit, and things to do.
IKissedHerInnerThigh@reddit
You obviously speak English, but how is your German and French?
Odd_Dot3896@reddit
Why the fuck would they need to speak French to go to Canada?? Have you been to Canada?
Adahla987@reddit
In Quebec everything official has to be done in French.

browneagle2085@reddit
Montreal is in Quebec. French is the preferred language there.
Odd_Dot3896@reddit
Where did they say they want to move to mtl? And speaking French is not required anywhere in mtl. And definitely not comparable to the amount go German you need to live in Germany.
Source: lived in both places.
Orion0795@reddit
The comments, motherf**ker! Did you read it?
Odd_Dot3896@reddit
Why? I’m replying to the post, not the comments. Besides, my comment still stands. Nowhere in Canada is speaking French a requirement, only a nice to have.
IKissedHerInnerThigh@reddit
People in Quebec are pretty patriotic and would disagree with you when it comes to the French language, it's the Official language https://www.legisquebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/document/cs/c-11
Odd_Dot3896@reddit
You don’t need it to get by, and you don’t need it to get a job. Have you lived in Quebec?
Orion0795@reddit
Hey, I got no dog in this fight so take it up with others. I was merely referring to your question about where did OP states that he wants to go to Montreal, when in fact he did mention it, its just one small scroll above. If you can't even be bothered, then that's on you.
artten12380@reddit (OP)
I don’t speak Germany nor French
IKissedHerInnerThigh@reddit
I lived in Wiesbaden for a bit, I was ok in work as we were all working for an American company and English was the common language, but outside of work I struggled. I'd go with Canada, they will speak English, and French, French is way easier to learn than German (in my experience).
unnecessary_otter@reddit
You can "get by" in Germany without german but it won't be fun. That would be a solid plus for Canada, unless you actually plan on intensively learning German.
R0GERTHEALIEN@reddit
Neither. People love to bitch about the American housing market, but Canada and Germany are both 10x worse. Unless you're planning to stay for 5 years or so I doubt buying a house even makes sense. You can buy stocks in either country the real question is how much will you have leftover rach month after cost of living and taxes. Most companies will reduce your salary if you move to germany, snd then consider the higher tax rate. Probably canada vs germany, but America is 10x better for housing an investing. Personally i wouldnt make this big of a life choice based on purely financial measures. Canada and germany are basically opposites jn most ways, where do you think youd enjoy living more.
artten12380@reddit (OP)
I understand that the us is the best for me. I decided to relocate with my current company help. Because USA pays more than Canada and Germany my chances of getting an approval for the relocation are low
ElijahSavos@reddit
Yeah, that’s why Canadians work for Us-based companies, invest in American stocks and housing, visa-free travel 6 months per year, etc. It’s still easy to access US perks as a Canadian

U-S-A! U-S-A! /s
CravenMH@reddit
I'm not sure about Germany, but we are taxed to death here in Canada. Cost of living is thru the roof.
ElijahSavos@reddit
Not untrue, but it’s worse in Germany
akhalilx@reddit
German taxes and cost of living are higher, while salaries are lower.
However, the differences are small enough that it's six of one, half dozen of another, and your life will be good in either country.
SMTP2024@reddit
House prices in Germany are far lower than Canada’s. You can buy a nice house in Germany. COL is high in Canada; groceries and essentials lower in Germany. Quality of services are better in Germany. Healthcare is Canada is a major issue as many do not have access to family doctors or specialists. The system is overloaded.
wheelsmatsjall@reddit
It depends where you live? If you live in the United States Canada is more expensive and so is Germany to live. If you're coming from a European country then that is a different story. The thing about Canada is what languages do you speak Canada's English mostly
SmallBootyBigDreams@reddit
Hi I'm Canadian living in Germany. Cost of living in Germany isn't lower than Canada tbh, with the exception of buying housing but in Canada you get taxed much less with all the tax incentives on savings. Career prospects wise, being in North America for the long term also opens you up to American job market which is a lot better paid than EU.
artten12380@reddit (OP)
Thank you man
guesswhat8@reddit
Do you speak German?
artten12380@reddit (OP)
Nope
zvdyy@reddit
Where are you from and what other languages do you speak? This will determine the answer.
artten12380@reddit (OP)
Israel I can speak English pretty good
zvdyy@reddit
If you don't know German you're going to have a very hard time in Germany. Unless you're committed to learning German which will be.
Canada much more accommodating.
Odd_Dot3896@reddit
As a Canadian citizen living in Germany. If you can afford it, go to Canada. The beauty of Canada is literally awe inspiring to me. But maybe I’m biased because I miss home lol
mayfeelthis@reddit
Canada.
Socially too, it’s easier. Unless you’re European (central/Northern Europe).
Check cost of living against your salary though, Germany is likely cheaper.
As far as tech sector I honestly can’t say how Canada and Germany compare, they are both strong economies though.
