Mariner 36 Ketch - Where is my Vent?
Posted by ThisIsNotTheBear@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 4 comments
I tried to to do a first pump out on the boat yesterday. I've not used the black water system since purchase so first time trying and... I have suction but no flow.
No problem - probably a blocked vent. Can I find the vent? I can not. The tank is centerline below the bilge just aft of the head. I can see both the waste tube from the head and the pump out line disappearing toward the tank but can not visualize the tank itself and can not locate any vent tube.
And while I have several throughhulls above the waterline, I can not find one that looks like it is the black water vent.

For those not familiar with a Mariner 36, here's some details: https://www.marineryachts.com/m36/mariner36.htm

Found a clam shell vent, just forward of the waste water port. It was full of mud doppers

Check the exterior hull for a clamshell first, as another poster suggested. If you don't find it, there's a sneaky trick they did on some boats. Look closely at the base of every lifeline stanchion for a small hole about 1inch up from the base.
Lots of sailboats vent fuel tanks this way, I've never seen it for black water but it's not impossible. Once you find it, look for the hose coming off the bottom and try to find the vent online filter, if one exists. Any time a holding tank overflows, it plugs those filters and they need to be replaced, it's a stupid design. But they do really help the smell

I have a Mariner 38 cutter, but my black water tank is under the v berth, and has a data tag that says it’s a fuel tank. I also haven’t found a vent for it, but I figured it might use the shower drain to vent when you pump out, but I don’t know. You might try the Mariner club site, but it takes a couple of days to get a response. Let me know if you need a link
