Tail lights/brake lights won't turn off no matter what I do and they keep draining my battery, what should I do?

First and foremost I can't afford to see a mechanic rn. The mechanic I spoke to said it'd be 80$ just for him to identify the problem. Which is probably fair but is way more than I can afford atm.
My car is a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. A little over a week ago I went to start my car and the practically brand new battery was dead. I had no idea why, I checked the headlights and they were off. I had to run to work so I charged the battery and left. I ended up needing a jump after work bc it was dead again. I was worried it was a battery problem but later that night I was grilling for dinner and in the dark I could see the red light of the tail lights lighting up trees behind it so I went to see what was wrong. All I could tell was that even when the car was off and the key was out the brake lights / tail lights stayed on at all times.
I asked my dad and he said he didn't have any idea other than that the best way to preserve my battery was to disconnect it so it wouldn't be drained. I did but that doesn't solve the problem and it's really inconvenient and I can't imagine it's good for the car or battery. I've tried googling but haven't gotten much info. Does anyone have an idea or what might be wrong and how I could fix it?

Hi just here with a recent comment. My light has been on for 2 days and didn’t know why I came across this chat tonight and THANK YOU ALL 2 years later and it’s still helping ppl.
I have a 2016 Hyaundai Elantra. I literally seen my rubber stopper broken into 3 pieces on the floor after someone commented theirs just fell off. I then went to YouTube to see where it’s supposed to be located and its current 8:26 PM all stores are closed and Amazon won’t deliver until tomorrow. I saw another comment who said they tapped 2 pennies together and it worked. Gave it a shot and BOOM no more lights on. This should hold me until the stopper comes tomorrow.
THANK YOU EVERYONE 🧡🧡🧡🧡

Disconnecting the battery isn't bad for it, just fyi. I don't know the solution, but until someone comes with more info, you can most definitely disconnect the battery, or an easier route would be to pull the fuse.
With that said, is it all the lights? Just the brake lights? All 3? If so, it's perhaps the brake light switch, which is typically a simple switch down by your feet under the dash. Crawl under there with a flashlight, and press your brake pedal with your hand, and see if you can locate the switch. You should hear an audible click as it makes contact. If not, this may be your issue.

All 3 are on, I'll have to check it out but tbh idrk what I'm looking for. If that switch is the issue, what should I do?
Ezpipz@reddit
I glued 2 pennies where the switch hits the base. Described in this video.
https://youtu.be/yy5zX8p_iOc
Cost is 2 pennies, superglue and patience.

Thank you so much.i woke up today to a dead battery that i replaced for 200 dollars and didn't know the issue till i noticed it while coming home tonight. It is the weekend and everything is closed and I was at risk of needing to replace the battery again. But finding your video helped and it turned off the light temporarily.
WolverineNo3927@reddit
That MacGyver like plan worked perfectly thanks
BoatUpset3267@reddit
My Hyundai accent was having the same issue with the brake lights. Did this and it worked thanks for the video
Street-Mistake9909@reddit
Just did this and it worked like a charm
Complex-Situation@reddit
Thanks for the video
Hudsons_hankerings@reddit
Most likely you'll need to replace the switch.
Gwolfski@reddit
The only "bad" thing that disconnecting the battery causes is that your radio presets etc reset, and the ecu resets, so it's very slightly less efficient as it does its re-learn process.
But the car or battery won't be damaged
barianter@reddit
The relearning happens extremely fast too.

Two pennys glued together to the plate that depresses the switch worked like a charm. Not sure who suggested it, but thanks for the tip.
JBriefcase@reddit
This worked, it’s easy to do just look for a video of where it is in your car. Mine was a Hyundai SantaFe 2016 and it’s right above the break! Just lean down and look up
Street-Mistake9909@reddit
Just did it myself. I only used one though

I'm having the same issue with my brake lights. I have changed the brake light switch and still have the issue can anyone give me things to try that won't cost a fortune
NecessaryTrack7972@reddit
Yep same here. Stopper was busted- replaced. Brake light switch is testing fine on a multimeter with bulbs out. I noticed one bulb looked burbed (but it was still coming on) and sockets looked burned.
Going to try to replace the sockets The guy at advance said there may be a possibility that the breaking of the stopper caused a some type of overload which fried the sockets. (For some reason this can bypass the burned filament in the bulb???). Dunno. Hope this fixes the issue.
Antosino@reddit
Are you sure it's adjusted correctly? When you're off the brake pedal, it's not pushing that switch in at all?
bgannierayne@reddit
Same issue only a 2015 Ford focus - drove fine, parked it - noticed later the brake lights were on. They've been on for 2 nights now (tonite being 2nd nite) my adult son, is checking the under brake thing. We've had neighbors and just now the police dept stopped by to let us know. Hey, at least, we live in an area that ppl care. (We live in a small town).
Thanks for the info - let's hope its as easy as that - We've tried almost everything else we could think of.

My 2009 Honda Accord was eating batteries. If I didn't drive the thing at least every 12 to 16hrs it would need to be jumped off. I too thought it was battery issues. Then I thought it was a relay sticking. Then I thought it was a demon possessing my car. Finally a few days ago my cousin called and said hey your tail lights are on. Key was out, lights off. Car in park. So I'm baffled. The damn things will not go off. Period! As of now I've taken off the hot on my battery !

Hey man I wanted to let you know that we fixed this and it was exactly what I think some of the comments here said, the little stopper behind the brake had worn out. The correct part isn't expensive or hard to put on, but I fixed it for about 6 months with a Popsicle stick piece glued to a wadded up sticky note. Definitely do some research but it seems like a pretty easy fix
jmoomoo13@reddit
I got the same problem Civic 08’. Center brake and right brake light. Then one time the head lights on but I’ll try this.
rudbri93@reddit
If its all 3 brake lights on, then first place id look is the brake light switch, on the brake pedal bracket. sometimes they are threaded and you can just screw them in or out to adjust them and get the lights off.
IHTFP08@reddit
Mine had a little plug that activated the switch and it broke off causing my lights to be on constantly. Replaced plug and problem went away.
Cortexxt@reddit
Hey mate just wondering what the actual plug is called, it’s just like a little plastic O ring on mine but cannot find anywhere
mars_555639@reddit
Hii
MsMelee@reddit
This just happened to me and was able to confirm this was the issue because of your post. Thank you! 🙏
Select_Temperature84@reddit
I just had the same issue happen i read the last comment about the 2 glued pennies all i did was drop a screw it worked perfectly!
Far-Worldliness5922@reddit
The pennies worked and saved me a headache
Cheesencrqckerz@reddit
Can you tell me how you did it? With the Pennies? I just noticed I have the same problem,
migalv21@reddit
Glue 2 Pennie’s together. Then glue them over the little hole that’s at the very top of your brake pedal. Follow the metal from brake pedal to the top - you’ll find a switch there.
Cheesencrqckerz@reddit
I had to take off a plastic panel and I was able to easily do this at the gas station in under 5 min. I found a YouTube video that helped me locate everything. Thank god for the internet and thank you for your reply. 🙏🏽

I have a 2018 elantra. Brake lights stay on. But when the car is off the brake lights stay off. Also the parking light on dash says on. Replaced the brake swith on peddle and still doing the same thing. Checked fluid level and it's good.
_SOAD_@reddit
I'm having the same problem! I replace the brake switch and it did nothing. My brake light stay on but when I turn off the car the lights do turn off.
Did you ever figure out how to fix this problem?
Marwolfking@reddit
Yeah it's weird my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe started doing that .
Fragrant_Grade_364@reddit
I'm having that issue rn did you ever get it fixed and if so what was it
_SOAD_@reddit
Brake lights have two filaments. You know the tungsten metal that gets really hot to produce light? There are two of those in a single light bulb for your brake lights.
One of the filaments stays on at night to act like tail lights and then the other filament illuminates when you hit your brakes.
Just replace both your brake lights and see if that fixes the issue.
Fragrant_Grade_364@reddit
Hey im having that issue also did you ever fix it and if so how
Caprine-Evisc@reddit (OP)
It fixed my issue when I replaced the brake switch

I had the same issue, in my case my pedal stop pad broke so my brake light switch couldn’t sense when I wasn’t using it. I believe the part number was 74015 for Honda/Acura. Almost thought I needed a whole new switch 😅
KawaiiKillz13@reddit
If it’s just those lights then it could be exactly what the last comments on here stated, or it could be your headlight switch. That controls all the lights. If you mess with that and the lights go crazy, then it could be that and it needs to change. It would cost about 150 or less depending on the make and model of your car, but that’s another thing that could be wrong. My car is actually doing this right now currently and the one lest side of the brake light won’t turn off and keeps draining my new battery.
netfiend@reddit
A friend had this same issue happen a few weeks ago (different car). It was a worn out switch that gets pressed when you press on the brake pedal.
He took it to a shop that he trusted to get the diagnosis and replacement switch. The shop mentioned in their conversation that he wasn't the only one that encountered this type of issue recently.
Gwolfski@reddit
Brake light switch, sits above your brake pedal. Might need to adjust or replace. They should be cheap parts.
Olisick@reddit
Break light switch is probably stuck on. Check under break pedal and adjust or replace. Good luck 👍🏽
