Losing the trees denies it rain. Condensation forms on leaves and drips down and otherwise induces rain, and shields the ground from sunlight.
New growth is no substitute for old either. A good share of the deforestation is from logging.
It is a shame too as there is great tree diversity in the tropics. An entire tract of it will often have only a few of the same tree. Many are insanely valuable for use as furniture and other things.
Across the tropics this is an issue, the military in Indonesia is heavily involved in illegal logging and regularly assassinates journalists or other do gooders looking into or opposing it.

What a coincidence, some in Brasil suspect, perhaps rightly, that their military members not only embold and protect diggers but also do it themselves. They ruin the forest to extract gold and other precious metals there.

The Sahara used to be green and lush, in the time of homo sapiens.
I do not know how they figured it became desertified beyond climate changes that denied it rainfall. But losing trees likely played a big part. Perhaps fires in a dry spell led to topsoil run off.
