Hurricanes do not become news on the day they arrive. They are reported on for days as they approach. And one that size so close to NYC is unusual. It was headed toward NYC for 4 days.

Honestly, intelligence is overrated -and definitely not the main problem. Intelligence is a bit like the engine of a car. A car with a powerful engine can get you from Point A to Point B really fast, particularly if A and B are in proximity or the line from A to B is straight.
But when there is a more complicated route from A to B that may not be helpful. That big powerful engine won't be of much use if you don't know how to get from A to B. A much lesser car with a road map will win except as chance allows.

Intelligence and critical thinking skills are two very distinct things. Intelligence (which is frequently and somewhat amusingly called IQ) is the ability to learn things quickly, to remember what one has learned, and in some instances to apply that knowledge.
Critical thinking is a method for establishing whether a claim has any validity. It works the same for the stupid as it does the genius when it is applied. Yes, the genius will navigate their way to the correct conclusion faster, but the stupid person will reach the same correct conclusion, though not as fast -all other things being equal.
Now in a race to a sound conclusion between a stupid person who carefully applies critical thinking skills and a genius who doesn't, the stupid person will win nearly every time.
To put it another way: great, world-shattering ideas are one thing, but without being able to think critically about potential obstacles, etc. and finding ways to make theory tangible, these ideas are pretty much always useless. I find the mathematics to physics pipeline compelling in this connection - someone comes up with a great idea and some solid theory, then a few hundred years later some physicist or other blunders into something expounded in mathematical texts from centuries prior. Intelligent people talking to each other across centuries. It really is a thing of beauty.
I think it would be significantly more reasonable to assume it is, so we don't get any nasty surprises later on. Passing it off as one grand conspiracy is equivalent to burying your head in the sand and hoping you don't asphyxiate yourself.

And sometimes they will do anything to cling onto normality, because it's the rock they build their life off, so when something terrible and drastic happens (this can be anything from a bad breakup to the end of the world) they'll believe the most outrageous stuff to try and keep a grip on that normality. I also think it's worth mentioning that institutional trust is at an all time low and the opposing party presents themselves as "anti establishment" lol. Times of social decline can make people vulnerable to conspiracism and to superstitiousness, both for the same reason - it's actually somewhat comforting to think that one's problems are being caused by a malign intelligence rather than by a complex and intractable set of economic, ecological, and thermodynamic feedback loops. A malign intelligence can be rooted out and destroyed (conspiracism) or perhaps appeased (superstition) and things can go back to normal. Complex feedback loops, well, if they are possible to intervene in at all it would require major changes in the status quo that would be uncomfortable for the powerful and despair-inducingly difficult for the powerless to enact.
Previously you may have come up with some batshit crazy theory, tell normal people, get laughed at and move on. Now you go online and speak to other crazies, get emboldened, and start to reject reality even more. Now the world has to be wrong because you and your online buddies can’t all be wrong can they!
Maybe you’ve not been around as long as others, but from the dawn of mass media conspiracies have always existed. I have at various times in the past interacted with “truthers” of some sort who have an irrational axe to grind. They always think someone has a leg up. But to be fair to them this is partially because there are in fact a lot of real “conspiracies”, aka wealth, power and money which do control their lives and they feel helpless in the face of. It’s just more elaborate version of this mindset.
Anger could explain some of it. Despair and alienation could be part of it. Think of the thoughts and emotions that come after someone close to you dies. You imagine that you might have saved them if only you had been beside them or maybe there was a failure by a doctor or maybe there was some nefarious reason that the person got sick. The loss of a loved can make the mind go in strange directions.
It’s possible that the ignorance expressed by so many is weaponized as a reaction against modernity, against mortality and against insignificance. It’s a form of defiance. These organic reactions are taken by bad actors and directed and twisted into disempowering narratives.
Most people in this civilization are raised to be vulnerable to such manipulation. It's part of getting obedient workers and people who don't try to attack the status quo / BAU. This malicious education is ancient, but also regionally specific, so each country may have different flavors, different strains. Malicious assholes can attack enemy countries or parties or societies by getting into this social cybernetic system and, essentially, manipulating it for their own goals.
This system's rulers are in a predicament.

Some blind squirrel just would want to see the world burn because they had been unable to find any buried nuts in several years. I'm not going to sit here and dissect that absolute nutter's beating around the bush, there are better things I want to do with my time - and it's already been done in the references of the article I linked. Her evidence is specifically cherry-picked, she has created her own terms (very culty) for phenomena she wants to believe happened, and there is blatant misinformation and emotional manipulation throughout her talk.

Apologies, my message started off with that I didn't mind if people acknowledge both, but specifically when they talk about weather manipulation.
When you replied and only insinuated manipulation, and no mention of CC, I drew the conclusion that you were trying to convince me that it's all the government, only the government always.
And I personally do see it as a one way road with discussion (regarding mentioning one or the other or both). Why? Because when CC is talked about, it's not trying to invalidate something, it's just observing/acknowledging and learning about a reality. Weather manipulation talk, every single time I have seen or heard it, is always trying to invalidate human impact on the planet; it's absurd human exceptionalism and attempts to absolve us of all we do to the planet as an energy hungry superorganism. Mass coral bleaching/ocean acidification doesn't help a government control the people (and I doubt it's a side effect from any potential isolated government manipulated weather experiments), and they can't boil the oceans like we're seeing -- industrial civilization is the most brobdingnagian energy gobbling machine that Earth has ever seen, it's odd to not see it as a catalyst for runaway climate change. 100 million barrels burned a day of ancient sunlight that took millions of years to form; mass deforestation; overpopulation/overconsumption etc. The puzzle pieces are there to put together the picture that's much bigger than anything a government alone could accomplish.
This actually is one of those rare things though where you can technically have it both ways (and it sucks up down left right and all around).

Durango is not the whole district. People spend time and effort to go vote for her. She remains an elected official with salary and staff and a vote in the House because people on Congress get those things. There are more people in her district that knew about her shenanigans beforehand, and wanted to keep her, than people that didn't.
Don't feel bad about it, my family lives in a place where they had a quiet, but equally deranged rep that 100% genuinely believes his crackpot stuff. And he perfectly represents the vast majority of that district as well. Honestly, intelligence is overrated -and definitely not the main problem. Intelligence is a bit like the engine of a car. A car with a powerful engine can get you from Point A to Point B really fast, particularly if A and B are in proximity or the line from A to B is straight.
But when there is a more complicated route from A to B that may not be helpful. That big powerful engine won't be of much use if you don't know how to get from A to B. A much lesser car with a road map will win except as chance allows.
In this analogy the road map is, of course, critical thinking skills. I'll take someone with average intelligence and good critical thinking skills over a genius without those skills.

Intelligence and critical thinking skills are two very distinct things. Intelligence (which is frequently and somewhat amusingly called IQ) is the ability to learn things quickly, to remember what one has learned, and in some instances to apply that knowledge.
Critical thinking is a method for establishing whether a claim has any validity. It works the same for the stupid as it does the genius when it is applied. Yes, the genius will navigate their way to the correct conclusion faster, but the stupid person will reach the same correct conclusion, though not as fast -all other things being equal.
Now in a race to a sound conclusion between a stupid person who carefully applies critical thinking skills and a genius who doesn't, the stupid person will win nearly every time.

To put it another way: great, world-shattering ideas are one thing, but without being able to think critically about potential obstacles, etc. and finding ways to make theory tangible, these ideas are pretty much always useless. I find the mathematics to physics pipeline compelling in this connection - someone comes up with a great idea and some solid theory, then a few hundred years later some physicist or other blunders into something expounded in mathematical texts from centuries prior. Intelligent people talking to each other across centuries. It really is a thing of beauty.

People surprise you sometimes. And sometimes they will do anything to cling onto normality, because it's the rock they build their life off, so when something terrible and drastic happens (this can be anything from a bad breakup to the end of the world) they'll believe the most outrageous stuff to try and keep a grip on that normality. This can affect even the smartest people - although that very often tends towards the personal level and not the fate of humanity.

Related to collapse because a new milestone has been reached. Hurricane Milton which was clearly made worse by the impact of climate change and fossil fuel has made a sizeable portion believe in weather manipulation. Ironically, it shows that people are more likely to believe in laser beams and weather manipulation by secret bases than it being caused by the use of burning fossil fuels into the atmosphere. This is largely a new level of idiocracy with numerous examples. Conspiracy that are farfetched are more apt to be believed than one is grounded in facts or evidence. In addition, common sense behavior suggests we will not fair well with surviving any collapse related issue. It is noteworthy because this might have been one of the most stupid examples of it for the entire year. We are truly declining in intelligence and common sense is going out the window.

Times of social decline can make people vulnerable to conspiracism and to superstitiousness, both for the same reason - it's actually somewhat comforting to think that one's problems are being caused by a malign intelligence rather than by a complex and intractable set of economic, ecological, and thermodynamic feedback loops. A malign intelligence can be rooted out and destroyed (conspiracism) or perhaps appeased (superstition) and things can go back to normal. Complex feedback loops, well, if they are possible to intervene in at all it would require major changes in the status quo that would be uncomfortable for the powerful and despair-inducingly difficult for the powerless to enact.

Anger could explain some of it. Despair and alienation could be part of it. Think of the thoughts and emotions that come after someone close to you dies. You imagine that you might have saved them if only you had been beside them or maybe there was a failure by a doctor or maybe there was some nefarious reason that the person got sick. The loss of a loved can make the mind go in strange directions.
It’s possible that the ignorance expressed by so many is weaponized as a reaction against modernity, against mortality and against insignificance. It’s a form of defiance. These organic reactions are taken by bad actors and directed and twisted into disempowering narratives.

Most people in this civilization are raised to be vulnerable to such manipulation. It's part of getting obedient workers and people who don't try to attack the status quo / BAU. This malicious education is ancient, but also regionally specific, so each country may have different flavors, different strains. Sounds good, right? Naples Resident here, there was near mass hysteria in the few days leading up to this, and the storm itself was pretty mild. It definitely showed me there is a level of communication breakdown that occurs in the lead up to these events due to the media imo,
The worst quote I heard repeated in soundbites from the news was, "If you stay in your home for this storm, you WILL DIE!"
It's manipulated panic, though I don't want to get into fringe speculation, as it could just be the fact that no one agrees on a storms trajectory and everyone has their own opinion.
Not sure if I can take many more of these though as the way florida deals with these things makes me depressed honestly, seeing gas lines and panic buying at the grocery store. it's insane.

This is what does worry me the most now,much more then environmental factors. I used to think there was still several decades to go but now i am woried for this decade.
Ever since the pandemic there seems to be a huge decline in the rationality. A huge increase in geo-political tension. A prioritizing of the private good over the public good. Against a background of worsening demographics and a world that is beeing exploited closer and closer to its limits.
The brakes are off and everything is starting to go of the rails. At this rate and with no change of trajectory there will be some climax this decade. Though that probably is not such a surprising prediction anymore.

I saw a post the other day where someone was telling people to go look at the flight paths of the Hurricane Hunters as proof of manufactured hurricanes.

The coastal southern states happen to be red. Hurricane did unusually hit California last year due to El nino rare wind streaming patterns.
2016-2020 (Trump admin) also had very high hurricane activity.
Very hot ocean temperatures are making strong hurricanes more likely to get stronger. Global warming instead of lasers explains them.

People on average are probably more intelligent now than at any point in human history. Severe lack of common sense going around but that's different from intelligence. The truly stupidest 20% of the population previously could only inflict their stupidity on those patient or unfortunate enough to be in their physical vicinity. The novel development in the internet age is that they can now self-select, organize, and even promote their stupid viewpoints. The lowest common denominator architecture of the internet is such that they 1) don't struggle to find each other and 2) now have other morons agreeing with them, lending a hitherto impossible confidence to their stupidity.
As to the weather manipulation conspiracy, that seems more like an oil industry hedge trying to sow doubt that I'm sure morons were happy to pick up and broadcast. Very little goes viral on the internet organically anymore.

Before the internet the traditional media organizations acted as gatekeepers that prevented the worst of the worst from being allowed to engage in the conversation in the public sphere beyond standing on a street corner and shouting at whoever walked by. Freedom of speech, in my view, comes from seeing things clearly, without bias—from a place of true neutrality. For example, you could have a highly educated person with vast knowledge, yet they could still be spewing nonsense that is detached from reality. On the other hand, a common layman, without an inflated ego, might observe things simply, acknowledging that awful things happen partly due to their actions, as they too are part of this whole mechanical society.
Freedom and bias don't mix, but the illusion of freedom feeds our egos to the brink. Otherwise, we would have to take responsibility not only for our own lives but for all of life on the planet.
Unfortunately, as these incidents escalate, propaganda will become stronger than ever. Browsing the internet and finding credible information will become a needle-in-a-haystack situation. We need to stay firm and strong in these times, even if some of our closest friends fall prey to this corruption.

Hurricane Milton which was clearly made worse by the impact of climate change and fossil fuel has made a sizeable portion believe in weather manipulation.
