Relocating to Dallas

Hi Folks, I am planning on relocating to Dallas before the end of this year. I have never been to Dallas so I am unsure about safe neighborhoods. I just completed my masters based in the North East region currently.

I am single so prefer to have just a 1BR, and preferably somewhere where I can shop Indian groceries with a vibrant Indian Community. Budget 1.5k ish pm for rent (not aware of current market and if this is too less or too high). I would prefer an apartment situation over condos. Would also prefer it to be near places where there are community activities that one can take part in/gym/tennis courts nearby.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Irving/Las Colinas has a large Indian population. I'm not sure where work will be for you but that would be my suggestion.

Just a comment on DART.

I wouldn't say that DART is a full functioning mass transit system. Perhaps if you work, live, and play in an area close to downtown, it might be functional. The Dallas metroplex is quite spread out so you will be limited to where you can go via bus route or will need to spend hours waiting for connecting buses to get where you need to be.

Also, current local news about DART is about surrounding suburbs wanting to decrease their tax funds that are currently being paid to DART because they don't feel like the transit service is worth the value they get from it. If these suburbs succeed with the decrease in funding, it will probably affect bus/train service. In essence DART may become a rush hour service only, getting people to & from work.

Also, if you ever need to get to Arlington, a big suburb just west of Dallas, good luck. Arlington does not use DART, nor any mass transit service. Arlington is a big entertainment area - sports, six flags, etc, - but you'll need to Uber or taxi to it. Or make friends quickly who will provide you a ride.

You might want to spend time researching the mass transit systems in different cities to determine which city to live in.

North Carrollton and Lewisville (Castle Hills area) also have a very large Indian population. Depending on where you are coming from in the NE, you might want to consider the location of your job - don’t expect the best public transportation system. Good luck with your search! I’m sure you will find a lot of helpful responses.
