A juvenile North Pacific humpback washed ashore at Waddell beach yesterday afternoon in California. Surfers saw great whites on it as it floated to shore.
Unable to identify fluke markings.

poor little guy. Would it passing closer to shore cause it to wash ashore instead of sink to the bottom?

Id imagine yes, less pressure near the surface and after a while, bloat floats. In california, the beaches are dirty and the water can make you sick because it doesnt carry water away fast enough (and has a lot of runoff waste snd people). At least in socal

I hope that it drifts out again and becomes part of the ecosystem, whales are amazing creatures in life, but their nutrients and whale fall is also super important when they pass.

drag it back out to the ocean so it can feed the ecosystem.

It's very sad to see that. But, I hope they drag it back out and let it be food for a lot of different creatures.

Poor baby :β( if the sharks killed it then itβs a sad but inevitable part of the ecosystem, but I hope it didnβt get killed by a ship or something, which is all too common.
