The first car I ever purchased was a Toronado, and then later purchased a 73’ Buick Riviera boattail which is basically the twin of this sweet contraption but I didn’t have that cool lounge seat and I’m jealous, however it did have a 455 big block and could smoke the tires but felt like it didn’t go over 80 mph with its 3 speed transmission

Barris’ creation include: The original Batmobile from the “Batman” TV show; General Lee from “The Dukes of Hazzard”; K.I.T.T. from “Knight Rider”; the Monkeemobile from “The Monkees”; the Ford Grand Torino from “Starsky and Hutch”; and the “Drag-U-La” from “The Munsters.” Original cars from the movies include the Ecto-1 from “Ghostbusters,” James Bond’s Aston-Martin DB5 from “Goldfinger”; the Triple X cars from “XXX” starring Vin Diesel and “XXX: State of the Union” with Ice Cube and Samuel Jackson; and the van from “Scooby Doo.” According to the 1996 book Barris TV & Movie Cars, other notable Barris creations include The Munster Koach and DRAG-U-LA from The Munsters, the truck seen on The Beverly Hillbillies (a modifed 1921 Oldsmobile), a modified Lincoln Mark III featured in the 1977 film The Car; a modified 1966 Plymouth Barracuda featured in the 1966 film Fireball 500; a Oldsmobile Toronado turned into a roadster for the TV series Mannix; replicas of a 1914 Stutz Bearcat for Bearcats!; the futuristic SuperVan for a film of the same name, and the title character for the much-reviled 1965 NBC comedy My Mother the Car among others.
Fun fact, in the owners manual of the 60s era Toronados all the cigarette lighters (one in each corner of the car for every passenger) were called cigar lighters.
Not really - back in high school- my buddy had a 66 tornado - at 6’4” I felt short in the huge interior - front and back seats both had tons of room - Since there was no driveshaft tunnel, the floor pan was as low as the bottom frame rail - great car for the era
I'm hoping enough of them forget that I can buy one someday - it's one of my barely-attainable dream cars. They're so fucking cool but still mostly in the 6-figure range.
I was correct that it's longitudinal, but it still faces forward, with some weird arrangement of the transaxle. It shared this layout with the Saab Sonnetts.
The Cord 812, however, did have the layout I initially described:
There is gobs of room in that engine bay. You can just about sit in it rather than lean over the fender. You can do plugs on it without even needing a swivel. Not like having to work on a late model Northstar.
Also as the other poster mentioned, the engine was longitudinal. It used the THM425 transmission that basically put the torque converter behind the engine, then had your typical GM TH transmission guts sitting beside it, parallel to the crank, connected by a steel chain. The output then drove a diff that passed the half shafts under the shallower oil pan.
Sometimes see them with a hole punched in the center of the hood. They had a flatter carburetor. Replace carb with the wrong one, the center bolt stuck up too high, and punched a hole in the hood as the hood closed.
The user below is correct, the reason FWD is transverse on most applications is because it is easier to manufacture, not anything intrinsic to the powered wheels.
425 Cubic Inches, or 7 Liters "Super Rocket V8" that gave up 385 hp/287 kW and 475 lbs-ft / 644 N-m torque.
This is almost hilariously inefficient and low-powered compared to modern cars, particularly when compared to EV motors. Which I'm noting as a way of admiring the progress we've made.
~400 hp and 475 lb/ft of torque is still strong as death for any vehicle that doesn't weigh 10,000 pounds
For reference,
All M3 models are powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. The standard version—it's far too good to be called a base model—sends 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels.
https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m3
As for this line
particularly when compared to EV motors.
Again, not true. EVs come in all types from crappy city run-about type vehicles
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_Dolphin
(94 hp)
All the way up to 1000+HP monsters.
The reason that so many EVs in the US are on the higher end is because most EVs being sold in the US are coming from start ups which are prioritizing high end cars so they can make profit and head towards solvency.
Now as far as being inefficient, you are 100% correct. But that amount of power is still strong. We just do it with 1/2 the engine these days.
The drums were plenty to stop it (at least a couple times), even at that weight. The real limit was the tires. It's real easy to skid it on modern radials at the stock size. I can only imagine how it would be on the bias plies of the era.
There's always the Pontiac solution - before they died, the last model of the Grand Prix could be had with a V8, still fwd only. They put bigger wheels on only the front end to help counter the torque steer.
GM was at their peak in the 1960s era. Designers and engineers were given free rein. Whether or not at the time they were looking behind them at competition or looking forward at the financial health of the company is another subject.
Back when seatbelts made you soft…I rode, lying down, in the back window of my dad’s Bro-Ham when I was 7 or 8…the danger of riding with our uncles when they came to visit still gets talked about
Barris is a legend but not everything he did was a gem. I think his best stuff was all the originals. I'll give him the '66 Batmobile tho. That thing was dope.
All he did to the Batmobile was paint it black, black out the headlights and add pinstripes; the 1955 Lincoln-Ghia Futuro was basically unchanged for the first season.
For the second season, he basically swapped the fiberglass body onto the chassis of a 1967 Galaxie 500; the original car had no chassis underneath, just a lot of pipes welded together, and was never meant to be driven the way they did in the show.
I thought it was a cool transformation. Maybe I'm being generous. He successfully turned it into a cartoon which was the point for that series. I think my point still stands. Barris was at his best when he created cars from the ground up.
Oh, I forgot something. He did add the (fake) jet engine to the back; that wasn’t something Ghia equipped it with. Also the rest of the cop gear.
That damn thing could empty a standard barbecue sized propane tank (what’s that, like 4 gallons?) in 3 minutes. Someone once asked the actor who played Batman what was the most embarrassing thing he ever did in the Batmobile. He said he deployed the drag chutes while the “jet” was still on, and set them on fire, on a public highway in California where they were filming. I hope someone saved that film, because that has to be a blooper for the ages.
This living room functionality needs to be a thing in modern vehicles. I have no idea how it would pass safety regulations, but by God, it's luxurious.
One of these saved my uncle’s life. He hit a bull moose on a highway in Alberta, and the length of the car front gave my uncle the extra second to duck as the moose rolled over the car and sheared off the roof.
To make it even better Toronado's were front wheel drive so there was no large hump in floor-board. Sitting in one was like sitting in a swanky living room. I saw a few in my teens but guess they weren't "x" models because they didn't have the fender swells etc.
I was just thinking about this the other day. As the exterior style of vehicles continues to meld, loosing any distinctive features, one would think they would pay more attention to interior design. Unfortunately not.
Wow, that is so BOSS! I miss the old cars from the 1960s & '70s. BIG, roomy, you could put 3 people in the front seat, and like 15 in the back, LOL!!! man, those were the days.
I got a big family, and if I gotta drive those goobers around , I'm throwing snacks at them to shut them up. You're passing them around correctly, and I'm tired of the 3 kids in the back constantly elbowing ts put of each other in pettiness.
Plus, just looks cooler. I also feel like there's more leg room.
I went down a brief rabbit hole. This is one of two like it, customized by George Barris (customization includes rear seat). He also designed the 60s Batmobile.
OP didn't mention this is specifically a custom BARRIS Oldsmobile creation. There were only 4 made, 2 still known to exist.
George Barris was one of the most prolific auto designers/custom builders of the 60's and 70's. Barris Kustom Industries is perhaps most famous for the original Batmobile from the ABC tv series, as well as the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, the General Lee, K.I.T.T. from Knightrider, the Monkeemobile, the Ford Grand Torino from Starsky and Hutch, and the Drag-U-La from The Munsters.
It's not. Here's one with a bit of different material inside. They're basically bespoke, made to order https://www.schmitt.com/inventory/ds-1967-oldsmobile-barris-70-x-toronado/
It looks like it’s got so much seating space, but it actually only has 2 seats and a awkwardly placed seatbelt where nobody can seat comfortably. I mean, do they seat with one leg on the floor and another up on the seat?
This is a Toronado 67X, 4 of which were ever made. They were designed and manufactured by automobile customizer George Barris for Canada's Expo 67 and raffled off after.

425 Cubic Inches, or 7 Liters "Super Rocket V8" that gave up 385 hp/287 kW and 475 lbs-ft / 644 N-m torque.
Front wheel drive gave them the flat floor.
Thankfully, in 1967, Front disc brakes were optional. Trying to stop that monster with 4-wheel drums would be a trick.
Luke_5-4@reddit
Back in the day, if you wanted to stop, you planned ahead.
DaDutchBoyLT1@reddit
Thankfully they introduced disc brakes in 68

I was correct that it's longitudinal, but it still faces forward, with some weird arrangement of the transaxle. It shared this layout with the Saab Sonnetts.
The Cord 812, however, did have the layout I initially described:
https://lavinerestorations.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Before-6.jpg
Wickedsnake00@reddit
There is gobs of room in that engine bay. You can just about sit in it rather than lean over the fender. You can do plugs on it without even needing a swivel. Not like having to work on a late model Northstar.
Also as the other poster mentioned, the engine was longitudinal. It used the THM425 transmission that basically put the torque converter behind the engine, then had your typical GM TH transmission guts sitting beside it, parallel to the crank, connected by a steel chain. The output then drove a diff that passed the half shafts under the shallower oil pan.
pourtide@reddit
Sometimes see them with a hole punched in the center of the hood. They had a flatter carburetor. Replace carb with the wrong one, the center bolt stuck up too high, and punched a hole in the hood as the hood closed.
Wickedsnake00@reddit
Hmm, I've never seen that, but I tend to stick to the Quadrajet. I'll have to remember that one.

FWD V8: Fiero engine swap. 😃👍
wegwerfennnnn@reddit
Hahaha my grandparents had a few Fieros and I always dreamed of doing the Buick 3.8 swap on one.
Koil_ting@reddit
The user below is correct, the reason FWD is transverse on most applications is because it is easier to manufacture, not anything intrinsic to the powered wheels.
Soft-Slice1637@reddit
The engines sit normally, it’s fucking nuts
MisogynisticBumsplat@reddit

UlrichZauber@reddit
This is almost hilariously inefficient and low-powered compared to modern cars, particularly when compared to EV motors. Which I'm noting as a way of admiring the progress we've made.
pathofdumbasses@reddit
This is not true.
~400 hp and 475 lb/ft of torque is still strong as death for any vehicle that doesn't weigh 10,000 pounds
For reference,
https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/m3
As for this line
Again, not true. EVs come in all types from crappy city run-about type vehicles
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_Dolphin
(94 hp)
All the way up to 1000+HP monsters.
The reason that so many EVs in the US are on the higher end is because most EVs being sold in the US are coming from start ups which are prioritizing high end cars so they can make profit and head towards solvency.
Now as far as being inefficient, you are 100% correct. But that amount of power is still strong. We just do it with 1/2 the engine these days.
Agile_Today8945@reddit
thats a lot of horsepower for 1967
LickingSmegma@reddit
I mean, grand-prix cars had about 600 hp in late 30s — with smaller engines, in fact. And late 60s was the dawn of muscle cars.
Wickedsnake00@reddit
The drums were plenty to stop it (at least a couple times), even at that weight. The real limit was the tires. It's real easy to skid it on modern radials at the stock size. I can only imagine how it would be on the bias plies of the era.
LickingSmegma@reddit
Wikipedia says the brakes overheated after a couple panic attempts at stopping the two tons of metal, and were considered the weak point of the car.
BowenTheAussieSheep@reddit
Oh God I'm just thinking about having to control the torque steer...
ErectStoat@reddit
There's always the Pontiac solution - before they died, the last model of the Grand Prix could be had with a V8, still fwd only. They put bigger wheels on only the front end to help counter the torque steer.
EverSeeAShitterFly@reddit
That’s absolute madness.
ErectStoat@reddit
Right?! How did that design meeting even go?
Guy 1: "If we add diameter to the front, the torque steer is reduced."
Guy 2: "Cool, bigger all around!"

It's George Barris, that was kinda his deal
blackbeansandrice@reddit
Barris is a legend but not everything he did was a gem. I think his best stuff was all the originals. I'll give him the '66 Batmobile tho. That thing was dope.
ShalomRPh@reddit
All he did to the Batmobile was paint it black, black out the headlights and add pinstripes; the 1955 Lincoln-Ghia Futuro was basically unchanged for the first season.
For the second season, he basically swapped the fiberglass body onto the chassis of a 1967 Galaxie 500; the original car had no chassis underneath, just a lot of pipes welded together, and was never meant to be driven the way they did in the show.
blackbeansandrice@reddit
I thought it was a cool transformation. Maybe I'm being generous. He successfully turned it into a cartoon which was the point for that series. I think my point still stands. Barris was at his best when he created cars from the ground up.
ShalomRPh@reddit
Oh, I forgot something. He did add the (fake) jet engine to the back; that wasn’t something Ghia equipped it with. Also the rest of the cop gear.
That damn thing could empty a standard barbecue sized propane tank (what’s that, like 4 gallons?) in 3 minutes. Someone once asked the actor who played Batman what was the most embarrassing thing he ever did in the Batmobile. He said he deployed the drag chutes while the “jet” was still on, and set them on fire, on a public highway in California where they were filming. I hope someone saved that film, because that has to be a blooper for the ages.
blackbeansandrice@reddit
I agree. The original is beautifully proportioned Customs can be fun but this looks overdone.

There's an even rarer version called the Esso 67-X, 5 were made for Canada's centennial, only one still exists.

bosstoyevsky@reddit
I went down a brief rabbit hole. This is one of two like it, customized by George Barris (customization includes rear seat). He also designed the 60s Batmobile.
iMichigander@reddit
Funny thinking about how this car would crumple up on impact compared to something like a modern day Honda Civic.

This looks so cool But where does the driver sit?
Emotional_Deodorant@reddit
Newish-Permission@reddit
I don’t know how functional it is but it’s cool because it’s just so different than the modern layout that car manufacturers use uniformly
Seabrook76@reddit
I would buy this if I won the lottery.

Friends dad had a 68 Toronado with a 455 ci and that beast would roast the front tires till you lifted.
Repeatability@reddit
It looks like it’s got so much seating space, but it actually only has 2 seats and a awkwardly placed seatbelt where nobody can seat comfortably. I mean, do they seat with one leg on the floor and another up on the seat?
HoneyRush@reddit (OP)
It's a fuck seat
micheal_pices@reddit

Tornado was memorably front wheel drive.
gunsdrugsreddit@reddit
There were a few of these built with a second drivetrain in the back, making them twin-engine and 4WD. Bonkers.

But, still, I'd ride in it.

This is a Toronado 67X, 4 of which were ever made. They were designed and manufactured by automobile customizer George Barris for Canada's Expo 67 and raffled off after.
