New Zealand to Australia Suggestion on foul weather gear that won’t bust the bank.

Getting ready to crew on a friends catamaran from New Zealand to Australia and was hoping to get some advice of affordable foul weather gear. I won’t use it much after this trip so didn’t want to buy top of the line. Also this will be my first real passage so any tips, recommendations or suggestions would be very appreciated. I have limited sailing experience but years of offshore experience. I live is Australia so that narrows my options for gear selection a bit.

I'm looking at trying out Kaiwaka Clothing's Aquaculture gear for my first pair ..
NZ based brand: https://www.kaiwakaclothing.co.nz/collections/commercial-fishing
We're only doing coastal and inshore stuff so might not be as practical for longer range.

This looks like a great option.

I got a great set of Helly Hansen foulies on ebay, new, not used for $225. They were not the total top of the line but close and if I went to West Marine to get them they would have been around $550 , so half price.

Thank you, I’ll try to find those. I did go on eBay but didn’t see much available, maybe my search was not comprehensive enough.

Do you have the equivalent of a Craigslist, it’s a local website for jobs, things for sale and cars, boats. I’d look there too!

Facebook marketplace or Gumtree here not nearly as good as Craigslist. No hits on either sadly. Some good tips from others and am following them up.

Sailing foul weather gear is brutally expensive for a one-off voyage, especially if you hit fair weather in the Tasman and don’t even wear them! If you need them, the main thing you want is a good waterproof layer. Take a look at gear made for fishermen - not as fashionable as sailing gear but very functional when the going gets rough, and certainly easier on the budget. The waterproofing of my fancy brand new yachting gear was done after 7 months of continuous wear on the ‘77 Whitbread. On the other hand, the gear I bought for two seasons of commercial fishing in 1982 is still waterproof and serving me well for yard work!

I was very surprised and delighted by the range of gear available at my local Anaconda. I picked up a set of Helly Hansen gear for a *lot* less than I expected. I sail in the Whitsundays, so I don't need the forty-three layers of undergussets that you Tasman Monsters need, but they had a lot of good gear for fair prices.
