Why are primary school parents so cliquey?

I cannot wait until my son is out of primary school and into top school next year. I'm American and don't get why the parents are still so cliquey, it's almost MeanGirlish. My son has been at his school since nursery, so he's a real OG :) but I have never been part of that group. I have tried, I did the play dates, did all the baking and showing up. Even went and got a job at the school as a teaching assistant for a year, hoping to make just one friend, but Nada. I'm not welcome and now in year 6, it's really showing for my son who isn't included in play dates anymore and feels ousted by kids who he thought were his mates. I am not posh, I am a country girl from north carolina, we are what I'd consider middle class here in the UK, but live in a very tiny, verrry posh village in the cotswolds. My son has told me that one of his best friends isn't allowed to hang out with after school anymore, as his mummy doesn't like my son. My son is not a bad kid, he is sweet and thoughtful, doesn't get into trouble at school and used to ride bikes to school with this kid. I'm just so over this small minded elitist mentality. My girls/I didn't deal with this as they went straight into secondary school when we arrived in the UK and any parent I've dealt with has been at least considerate. Why is it like this?
