Saying "interface with" changed the tone of this somewhat.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
What "tone" does it give?
BobKatzenberg@reddit
Sexy.

Is Half-Life 2, Portal and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. your definition of retro gaming? Gosh, I feel old. I feel really old now.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
Sorry my games made you feel bad. I don't define retro, just wanted to share my build
frostyflakesdf@reddit
I think the good type of old not the bad type :]

Here's how I went about my build:
Classic World of Warcraft's "Recommended Specs." Not the minimum, but the recommended.
I used pcpartpicker.com's "build" feature to start crafting a build around these recommended specs.
The tool lets you make sure that everything you intend to buy will be able to connect to each other and receive power.
Once I had my list, I went on Ebay to look for deals. Then, whatever else I couldn't find I would buy off Amazon.
Parts came in about a week and I built it up.
Didn't get a boot on the first try (darnit!) ended up being the front chasis power switch cable being labbeled as "ATX" so I had plugged it in wrong spot.
After that quick fix, booted up just fine and installed Windows 10 off of a USB thumbstick I had prepared.
Playing Classic World of Warcraft on it has been an absolute blast :)
Other games I intend to play are in the last pic.
Thanks for reading

4th gen i7 is retro now apparently. Fuck I'm old
PowerPie5000@reddit
Same here, I was expecting this to be something along the lines of a Pentium II or AMD K6-2 system. I don't consider any of the Intel Core series to be retro yet.
_-Kr4t0s-_@reddit
If we go by technical design, the Core CPUs are certainly not retro. None of them. They all have in-processor memory controllers, in-processor PCIe controllers, PCIe in general, TPMs, LPC bus (not ISA), no northbridge on their chipsets, UEFI and not BIOS, and so on. These days some of the old Interrupts are gone too. The Core2 systems are the last generation of retro IMO.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
Agreed! It's the Classic World of Warcraft recommended specs, placed into an old chasis and old peripherals attached to it.
mylegbig@reddit
I wouldn’t consider the hardware itself retro, but it can be highly compatible with a lot retro software via Windows XP. Think it’s the newest hardware that’s fully compatible with XP.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
haha it's not! The guts are rather modern. Needed something decent for Classic WoW

All good, I was just being a smartass, sounds like a fun project and a cool build.

Omg that power button looks so springy, I can hear it thru my screen 😍
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
It is SO SATISFYING to power on!
Responsible-Remove67@reddit
I have an AOC 7VLR it looks like the same
Responsible-Remove67@reddit
also you should submit your CRT to https://crtdatabase.com it would be nice
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
Sure, I'd be happy to. What's the objective of this website? To track CRTs since they are becoming more and more scarce? Curious to know, but happy to submit it.
Responsible-Remove67@reddit
It's a website that list the maximum of CRTs with their specs to help people to learn more about specific models and look for a CRT that will suit them thanks to a super search engine, I already submit my AOC 7VLR it's the first AOC of the website, but it's waiting to be approved.
Always_FallingAsleep@reddit
Look at that magnificent AOC CRT monitor. (Formerly Admiral Overseas Corporation)
They've been in existence since 1934.. Nice project btw.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
It's beautiful and looks gorgeous. I turn out the lights and just use that desk lamp. The zones in Classic World of Warcraft have such deep purples and greens on this screen I am in love.
majestic_ubertrout@reddit
Very nice semi-sleeper. Surprised you're not booting XP on it.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
Classic WoW requires Windows 7 or later, or else I would have gone the XP route

Keep an eye on the temperatures of that 4770 as they are known to fry themselves due to cost cutting at the time on Intel’s part.
It requires de-lidding and new thermal paste to fix. Luckily, there is a playlist of videos on YouTube of how to do it on this specific generation as it is such a common issue.
High temperatures on startup, freezing and kernal panics were the norm for the one I had to fix.
Chongor_@reddit (OP)
Sounds good, I've got temperature monitoring and it's running super cool so far. We'll see

This is my dream build. And the selection of games is top notch, Stalker, HL, Quake, WoW. Back in the day I couldn't afford any of this, and now it's so hard to find in my country. One day though.
