What was your favorite MS-DOS CD game?

There was a sweet spot in the 90s where PCs just wildly outclassed consoles for gaming.
My top two would be Crusader: No Remorse and Wing Commander III.
Muderous_Teapot548@reddit
CD? Because I had some 5.25 and 3.5 disk games, too....
Cassette tape - Pyramid (A Text based adventure game)
5.25 - Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? tied with Wizard of Oz
CompuServ Download - Empire
3.25 - Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (This is also when my dad randomly stopped letting me game, and I started again when he bought a CD ROM)
CD - Timelapse, 11th Hour, Phantasmagoria
Earl_Gurei@reddit
All the point-and-click adventure games, like King's Quest 6.
ReadilyConfused@reddit
The Quest for Glory VGA remake.. Sooo good. Wish they remade 2 in the same way.

The music for this game was incredible — the “Imperial March” but as a heroic theme.

Defenders of the empire
FastWalkingShortGuy@reddit (OP)
Good one. In the same time period, I was partial to N64's Shadows of the Empire for a console space combat sim.

Kings Quest V
lostinmyway@reddit
I learned how to type from playing King's Quest 2! Loved all the Sierra games bavk then. King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry when my parents left me home alone.

Kings Quest taught me to always Save Early, Save Often!

Loved the Kings Quest series

Return to zork and I guess myst.
notresearch503@reddit
Holy shit I was about to comment to see if anyone had ever heard of Return to Zork! I actually played it again a few years ago. Such a hilarious game.
Skerrydude@reddit
Yes! Such a great game. The characters were so well developed and it seemed to be so realistic with the limited graphics.
Do you use an emulator or something else to play such classics?
notresearch503@reddit
Yeah it was a type of video that didn't really take off, the way the actors were actually in the game or something, like Rayanne from My So-Called Life. I don't remember what it's called.
I saw it available on steam for like 5 dollars. I couldn't believe it, so I downloaded and played it in a day with my much younger friends watching and they were dying. I remember it being so hard too and you could basically drop the wrong items at any time and render the game un-winnable. They don't make em like that anymore, for sure.
cmgww@reddit
Flight Simulator, Wolfenstein 3D, and Doom were a few of my favorites. And the OG Need For Speed
Polymox@reddit
I had an MSDOS NASCAR racing game I played the heck out one summer in the 90s. I thought it was pretty realistic at the time.

honorable mentions: Warcraft 1, Karateka, there was also a game where you were a soldier killing large bug like aliens in a top down shooter, but I can't remember the name.

I'm always delighted to find other people remember these games!
everythinghappensto@reddit
Most of the games named so far that I had came on floppies, for me at least. I wonder if my dad got a CD-ROM drive around the time I went off to college (with a Mac), so that's why I don't remember many.
LeftHandedGuitarist@reddit
Oh, too many to choose from! It's still my favourite era of gaming.
TIE Fighter
Full Throttle
Space Quest
Lands of Lore 1 & 2
Command & Conquer
Police Quest
Gabriel Knight
Star Trek: A Final Unity
Wing Commander 3 & 4
Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Dune 2
brainfreeze77@reddit
I don't know what qualifies as a CD game. Myst, Baulder's Gate, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Diablo, Starcraft, and Half-Life were all released on CD in the 90s and all amazing games.
RoughnecksStreetHock@reddit
Those were designed for Windows I believe.
brainfreeze77@reddit
Possibly, I don't know which ones can and can't run without Windows. I know the iD games can run in straight DOS 5.0, and I am pretty sure MYST will. Windows wasn't really an operating system until XP. It ran on top of DOS, and a lot of applications could run without it.

Mine was most definitely “King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart go Yonder”. Great game and graphics. For a point and click it had an amazing story and loads of action.
CorgiMonsoon@reddit
I loved the Lucas Arts point and click games, especially Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max Hit the Road
gooch_norris_@reddit
Day of the tentacle was transcendent. I was also super into Indiana jones and the date of Atlantis
G_o_O_s@reddit
Doom2 and SimCity 2000 were my favorites. Also loved Decent, X wing vs Tie Fighter, Sim Ant, A-Train, 3D boxing, Lords of the Realm, and Nascar Racing on PC.
paulster2626@reddit
The 7th Guest! Oh no, memories unlocked…
My POS 386 didn’t have enough RAM and my 5B drive couldn’t handle shit but my friends mom had a sweet 486 in their basement with speakers and everything. Buddy and I obsessed over that game for a week, it was awesome.
Then we realized the word processing software had the exact same font as our drivers licenses, so we were able to print on packing tape with the laser printer to make us 19 years old (legal drinking age here). This began a lifetime of liver abuse, or exercise depending on how you look at it….

I'll always have a soft spot for my first game - Carmen San Diego.
FastWalkingShortGuy@reddit (OP)
I had that on 5.25 floppy in the 80s.
Anyone remember Math Blasters?
ImAnOptimistISwear@reddit
I probably got it in 90 or 91 and also had the America's Past version, there were so many of those big floppy discs per game and I was an anxious kid so i was always worried I was going to bend them trying to hurry and continue so I didn't sacrifice any game time.
Lemmy_Axe_U_Sumphin@reddit
Betrayal at Krondor, Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom II, tie fighter, x wing, sim city
Soft-Piccolo-5946@reddit
I was about to say Betrayal at Krondor. Wow, throw back.
Shared…? all these titles with my homies back in the day.
vonjoy1980@reddit
Freespace 2, the xwing games, Monkey Island, endless point and clicks, the gold box games, WIng commander 2 - 4, Full throttle, Dune 1&2, Sierra games, Dune 1 & 2, star trek 25 anniversary... so many. Those were the days, I had a full on old school big box collection for my 486 and later pentium 1. Main thing i remember were my extended battles with extended memory and constant tweaking of config.sys and autoexec.bat.
thedoogster@reddit
Looking back? King’s Quest 6.

SimCity 2000

Commander Keen! Can't remember if that was DOS or Windows though.
metmerc@reddit
It was definitely a DOS game. You could launch it through Windows 3.1, but that was still rooted in DOS.
sum-9@reddit
Duke Nukem, and Sam & Max.
vlegolas1982@reddit
Prince of Persia 1 and 2!

X-Men 2: Fall of the Mutants (I was a huge X-Men comics collector), and Dark Sun Shattered Lands.
I didn't actually own these games myself (or a computer). My friend did and I spent every weekend at his house and we loved these games. I didn't get a PC until like 1999. It was a Gateway 486.
Wordtothinemommy@reddit
Dark sun was a dope rpg. And I loved both Ultima VIIs and UO. Those were some of the best games ever for me.
