Would Kpop idols be considered as attractive in America?

I'm korean, and I heard that Americans have different beauty standards. I did hear that in America, unlike Korea, skinny men are not considered as good looking.

Not the skinny part, just the fakeness and idk... pretentious?
DjinnaG@reddit
I would have found them attractive when I was a teen. I loved the skinny boys and did not dig muscles. Now, they just look like very beautiful children, waaaaaay too young to be attractive, no matter how aesthetically pleasing
twxf@reddit
Attractive to whom?
arianaiscat@reddit (OP)
Well, to Americans teenagers I guess.
shelwood46@reddit
Teens, yes, especially younger teen girls have always liked slender and slightly effeminate (by US standards) celebrities. Many many American teens love KPop artists, and I do know a fair few adult women who also find them attractive, though their actual irl spouses tend to not look anything like that.
DifferentWindow1436@reddit
The Kpop women, yes. The guys, niche but more likely no.
AssassinWench@reddit
I think most male K-Pop idols are attractive personally - with one caveat being when a bunch of male idols who debuted in the 2010s era were unhealthily thin most likely due to agency and “fan” pressure.
I think people who take care of themselves are attractive, so that ultra, ultra thin look isn’t attractive to me personally.
UnfairHoneydew6690@reddit
I don’t know, I feel like I’ve been seeing more and more deathly skinny idols popping up lately.
AssassinWench@reddit
I guess for the groups I follow (only male groups) that isn’t the case. Were there specific male idols that came to mind? It’s still the standard for female idols for sure and will probably continue to stay that way as far as I can tell 😶
UnfairHoneydew6690@reddit
A good portion of NCT looks malnourished but I suppose they’re not really that new anymore. My geriatric ass mostly just listens to 2nd and 3rd gen stuff.
I just know most of the kids I see running around on stage don’t look well fed.
AssassinWench@reddit
Any specific members in NCT? I don’t really watch their performances - just some music videos.
I was thinking more like Shinee, Ateez, BTS, EXO - I think the guys look good these days - debut-wise I think EXO especially looked too thin.
I doubt you’re geriatric 🤣 We’re probably around the same age tbh 🙏🏻
gaoshan@reddit
I can tell you that my 20-something daughter (who is half-Chinese) thinks Korean K-pop guys are very attractive (Enhypen would be a current favorite of hers) while my wife finds them effeminate and not attractive at all as she prefers big, burly “manly” men. They debate this frequently, lol. Different strokes for different folks.
panda_pandora@reddit
Kpop is actually seeing a huge surge of popularity in America right now and most of the fans seem to find them very attractive.
prometheus_winced@reddit
Teenage girls have at least a significant slice of K-pop fans. It’s been “increasing” for several years now, although it’s still niche.
My understanding is the girls find the men attractive but “non-threatening”.
Ryukion@reddit
People overthink the beauty/attractive standards..... but especially your body type. Being skinny isn't a bad thing at all, most asians are skinny but i've seen plenty who workout and are muscular or atleast cut/fit. But even if you are skinny, that isn't a bad thing at all esp if you look good or dress well. That skinny boy Timothy Chalemet (i dunno how u spell his last name) is a skinny twig but girls love him.... or even justin bieber or something. The big muscular hunk is what guys think all girls want and are into.... but that is not true at all, they like different body types just like men like skinny/petite and/or big/curvy women.
For Kpop..... its actually kinda popular with teens so that isn't even a big issue. Koreans in general have even matched the Chinese or Japenese when it comes to asians and assuming what country they are from..... these days you hear about koreans all the time, not just kpop but stuff like kimchi or korean bbq. Kpop has prob helped push koreans upfront in popularity in american culture more then people realize, even if kpop isn't super popular in america.... I'm surprised the girl groups don't get more attention but boy bands have always been a thing.
As for the kpop style korean men..... imo they do the whole femmboy thing too much. Too much makeup and all that..... if u are the type that wants to look pretty and wear some makeup to enhance your looks, just a tiny bit of eyeliner is enough to "make your eyes pop" lol. Asians have good hair if its like medium lenght and they can style it in different ways, but I would avoid all the weird colors and dyes and stick to plain natural black hair. And in general I don't like tattoos and don't have any but that is ur personal choice, and I think simple jewlery is best..... maybe 1-2 rings, some bracelets, a necklace or chain, and if you like earrings, get your ears pierced but not overdone (such as like multiple earrings or the dangly ones..... that is a certain look but i don't know how many girls would be into it, gives me "poser" vibes personally, while a simple small earring stud or ring works well.... that is what I rock atleast).
iliveinthecove@reddit
I always thought we didn't have a standard of beauty. My friends and I all found different types attractive, but also looks aren't the most important thing. Good looks are a bonus.
GEMINI52398@reddit
No, they look like little girls.
Burial4TetThomYorke@reddit
I think the girls are kinda cute but they look too manufactured for me to be really into them. Same kind of reason that I find Sabrina Carpenter repulsive. But for example on singles inferno season 1, I totally had a crush on So Yeon, but also Yea Won was also really pretty.
QuirkyCookie6@reddit
I can't speak to the men, as I wouldn't be attracted to them anyways.
In regards to the women I can tell they are beautiful, but I do not personally find them attractive.
arianaiscat@reddit (OP)
You don't even find Irene, the visual of Red Velvet, attractive?
ProbablyMyRealName@reddit
I just googled her, and no, not really. 🤷♂️
arianaiscat@reddit (OP)
Wow
UnfairHoneydew6690@reddit
Hwasa from Mamamoo is prettier in my opinion
QuirkyCookie6@reddit
Ngl, haven't really heard of her before, I looked her up though. Shares way too much resemblance to my teenaged cousin for me to not be weirded out. Which just baffles me further because google says she's 33.
Visible-Shop-1061@reddit
K Pop male stars look like women, which is not attractive to American women unless they are under 14 years old.
frisbeemassage@reddit
Wow what a ridiculously sweeping stereotype. And completely false
UnfairHoneydew6690@reddit
I can think of like 5 male idols off the top of my head that are all jacked and look very much like men. The ignorance is astounding.
WritPositWrit@reddit
Yes of course. An attractive person is an attractive person. Plenty of Americans find Koreans attractive. (My daughter, for example, fangirls over many of them.). Not everyone, but there is no one person that everyone will agree on.
bdrwr@reddit
You're asking very generalized questions, so none of these answers should be taken as 100% true. It all varies from person to person, and subculture to subculture. People have different tastes.
There are kpop fans in America. Many skinny "pretty boy" type men are considered attractive by millions of people; look at examples like Justin Bieber, the Backstreet Boys, One Direction (notice: the pop music subculture is more into the skinny boy look).
However, I think it's true that Americans are usually more into muscular square-jawed men. I can think of WAY more examples of buff men who are sex symbols. You will sometimes hear a certain attitude where those skinny popstar guys are looked down on as being weak and effeminate in comparison to "real men"
thestereo300@reddit
My teenage daughter finds many of them attractive haha.
Guy2700@reddit
I would say that for most women they look and act too feminine.
nowhereman136@reddit
I'm not that into k-pop, but I don't think I've ever seen one that would be considered unattractive in America. At the very worst, some of the guys might be seen as too femine to make it on People's "Sexiest Man Alive" list, but they still wouldn't be called unattractive and there's still plenty of love for those looks from an American audience.
KatieNdR@reddit
It might be the level of plastic surgery. I lived in daegu for a while and I was shocked at the amount of young people (under 25) who had already experienced multiple plastic surgeries. It wasn't just fillers, it was nose jobs, surgeries to create an eye crease, jawline reconstructions, etc.
For Americans, we typically don't approach plastic surgery until we are in our late-30's to mid-40's, if at all. The vast majority of Americans outside of Hollywood don't ever get plastic surgery.
Acrobatic_End6355@reddit
Yes. There’s a reason a bunch of Kpop groups always tour the US.
zugabdu@reddit
When it comes to beauty standards for men, there is no single standard. What some find very attractive, others find off-putting. Being confident and charismatic matters more.
tsukiii@reddit
I’ve heard Stray Kids is really popular in the US and other western countries. I’m more of a girl group girl, myself.
JFKontheKnoll@reddit
Different people have different standards of beauty.
In general, though, I feel like most Americans would find someone like Daniel Dae Kim or Steven Yeun more attractive than guys like Jungkook or Jimin.
juggdish@reddit
Timothee Chalomet is extremely popular and probably considered very desirable in the US, and he’s a twig
quentinislive@reddit
If you ask my 19yo and her friends, those are some good looking guys. In fact, we are going to sit in a a parking lot for 2 hours waiting for a free concert by a K-POP group.
Fancy-Primary-2070@reddit
My region of the country doesn't like -- too much time spent on outward appearance to get a very uniform look. It's not so much the skinny thing that doesn't appeal to me - they just seem artificial.
Look at Timothy Chalamet and Harry Styles. I like their vibe a lot and prefer their look to muscley guys-- they are skinny, like fashion, but seem way more individual about it and like they are having fun. Kpop feels so contrived so it's a real turn off.
BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy@reddit
The women, yes. The men, not so much.
linds3ybinds3y@reddit
I don't listen to Kpop, but I do watch Kdramas and definitely find many of the stars attractive. Ahn Hyo-Seop, for example, is an absolute smoke show.
MoreCowsThanPeople@reddit
Amongst teenage girls? Yes.
ImaginationIll2677@reddit
Mostly the girls, not the guys
Current_Poster@reddit
A fair number people seem to be really into Kpop, here, so it must be working for someone.
cdb03b@reddit
Skinny is fine, but there still needs to be some muscle tone for men. There typically is not with most Kpop male stars. They also tend to have fairly soft facial features which combined with being very thin makes them look effeminate and child like.
TheBimpo@reddit
There’s no such thing as universal standards of beauty. Different people find different things attractive.
alltheprettynovas@reddit
i love a lean guy! but to me, kpop idols look child-like, and that is a personal turn off.
