You have just made my day, friend. I don't live near any of them (which is probably a good thing for my weight), but will be passing through a town that has them in the near future.
The taco bells near me sell them but charge $3+. However, imo, Hormel chili and cheese in a tortilla gets you pretty close to a chilito.
(Individual experiences may vary, commenter is not responsible if other individuals individually or collectively come to a strong disagreement with aforementioned suggested "food" comparison.)
They're not discontinued. At least not to my knowledge I had one about 3 months ago, they're not as good as they used to be though. They're really runny the last ones I had. And it gave me the squirts LOL!
Oh man, that’s a long ago memory, we used to have a decent system down and everything for winning that game. Apparently you can buy one for over $2000….
3$ was a 6 pack of tacos, drink was a refill on the same large cup you had for 6 months and when we got a little older everyone would pile into whoever’s junker was working at time to drive to the Taco Bell that your friend was working at because even if they couldn’t hook you up at least your toppings would be evenly distributed lol
I lived in a university town where there was about a 20 minute walk from most of the bars to the campus. Right in the middle was a taco bell. It was absolutely packed between 1-3, basically an afterparty of its own. If you went in after 3, it looked like a bomb made of wrappers and hot sauce went off lol.
Me and some friends in high school were banned from that machine eventually.. They said we weren’t following “the rules.” We had a technique that didn’t involve moving the post like you’re trying to pull a tablecloth out from under it, so they cut us off.
I grew up in Chicago, where we have real Mexican food. I remember my mom taking me and my brother to Taco Bell because we saw the commercials and a new location opened near us. We thought it was total shit and wondered why anyone would eat it.
Do they do that little coin thing on the counter still? My friend bragged so much about how good he was and I gave him change to prove himself. He earned his taco, but then I smashed it right in front of him with an “Enjoy your taco!” I watched the man die inside.
I worked at Taco Bell in the mid-2000s and abbreviations on the register still haunt me. Most of them made no sense. T-BF was a hard shell taco. PN&CH pintos and cheese. BWKZKT - southwest chicken border Bowl
In highschool, my band director taught us some of the more complicated rhythms of the finale of Faust using mexican food. One of the background flute parts was "Pintos and cheese".
Back when 5 bucks had you feeling like you was BALLIN OUTTA CONTROL at Taco Bell! Bring back the Mexi-melt and the Mexican pizza and maybe i'll be back😂
The chili cheese burrito remains on the menu for a few locations. In Michigan, they’re still available at the Taco Bell in my hometown, as well as the Taco Bell in Gaylord.
So the key is Mccormick Chili Seasoning. Use it on your ground beef instead of taco seasoning, and grab a bottle of Taco Bell sauce while you're at the grocery store, too.
Add pre shredded bagged cheese (you know the kind), sprinkle a little salt on that motherfucker and I promise you won't be disappointed.
That wouldn’t by any chance be around the Ft Wayne area? I have a festival I’m playing next weekend, and I’d dang sure bust up my diet by face-fkng a pile of those burritos.
No. This is in Evansville. Not sure if it’s a local thing but at least three Taco Bell’s have them. You can even order them on the app. So maybe check the app first?
When your family doesn't have much money so you just order soft tacos for $.40-$.50 each, and split a little paper bag of cinnamon twists with 1-2 siblings as a special treat. Always a fun meal despite there not being a toy or kids meal option.
I remember the .59/.79/.99 meal deals in the 90s, a family of four could eat a full meal for less than $5. Nowadays one person ordering light can’t even get that!
It’s literally the best thing I’ve eaten in the last 5 years from there. I was so happy when they announced they were bringing it back and so pissed off when it was only in a few CA locations. Reddit saved me too.
🎶When you think "tacos," think .49 cents. 'Cause that's all you need at Taco Bell, it's hard to believe but you know darned well they taste so good! with lettuce and cheese; just open your mouth, for that seasoned ground beef.🎶
I spent $14.40 in a single meal. I didn’t pay attention to the prices while ordering in the drive through. I pulled around and the cashier said, “$14.40 please”. I said, “oh, no, I just had the one meal” “yes, it’s $14.40”.
Yeah, Taco Bell isn't cheap anymore. I remember $.79 bean burritos, $.99 other burritos when I was in college. Scrape a meal outta there for $2.10 after tax and be full. Though, of carbs and crap mostly lol but it put something heavy enough on your stomach.
I paid 12 fucking dollars for two tacos for my kid. The first mobile order glitched but still charged us.
Made an in person order and paid and contacted support. Got a follow up email like 2 weeks later asking for proof of the charge on like a bank statement and that’s fair but I can’t be bothered and I know that’s on me.
But in the 90’s I would have only been out like a dollar lmao.
Nowadays one person ordering light can’t even get that!
Assuming by "that" you mean "a full mean [for one person] for less than $5" you absolutely can still do that at TB, and it's the only fast food place I'm aware of where you still can.
As a 6' 250lbs man, I get a meal's worth of food from TB for $2.58.
In VA Beach there was this program to promote studiousness. Straight A-s and you got free meals at Taco Bell and Hot & Now (remember that train wreck of a restaurant?). A-s and B-s and you got, like, a free side. It was a card you were issued.
The hack was this: you could use it every. single. day. My lazy ass mom coupled with a flock of gifted children and we abused the fuck out of it. In fact, Im fairly sure we were largely the reason the program didnt last more than a year; we ate free, fast found nearly every dinner.
It was called “A-Star” or “Star Card” or some such.
I don't know about now, but back in the day they had their red sauce and also a green sauce...the chicken quesadilla used to be chicken, cheese, and green sauce inside a tortilla. It was quite popular for people to order bean burritos and swap out the red sauce for green sauce.
I had to clean that area when I worked there in high school. I also had to spray down the drive thru every morning, which really was the highlight of the day.
Someone turned the inside of one into a drive-thru near me 2-3 years ago. They were forced to remodel the lobby; removing all the dated tables and chairs like in the photo.
One time we had a huge party at my parents house, classic early 90s shit. There was over 100 people.
The next morning, me and a few buddies that were still there the next morning got in my car and we went to Taco Bell. The four of us sat silently, hungover, in this exact room. Two of them were my old friends for years. The third man I hadn't met before, must be a mutual friend.
We ate our shit while the third man talked a bunch, about all sorts of stuff. Businesses, music, women, airplanes, etc. I was just going along because I figured he was a mutual friend and I should listen, but he was annoying the shit out of me.
We all rolled back to the house and the third man got in a car and left.
The three of us friends were left and I asked them "who was that guy?"
My buddies did the classic "Huh? We thought you knew him?"
I think of that interaction every time I see this. That, and the other time I took too much x at a music festival in the Rockies, went to a Taco Bell just like this the next day, the techno version of "Heaven" by Heart comes on and suddenly Im crying my eyes out into my nachos belgrande
I would probably go to a taco bell with the old interior instead of the new ones. Not too far from my house is one of the original buildings.I think it is a carpet place now. They just slapped some new paint on it.
Same here , you guys need to remember that xennial (or GenX ) doesn't automatically mean American . I find the closer things get to the present the more experiences are universal , but a lot of U.S. 80s ad campaigns/franchises/magazines etc weren't that well known outside the U.S.
Exactly. A lot of the posters here dont realise that the world was a bigger place in the 80s and 90s , and while we'd get a lot of US references, there were a lot of totally alien US things that we knew nothing about.
I was actually working at Taco Bell when they were jumping on the "health craze" Subway started and switched from dark meat chicken to "all white meat chicken" and then shortly after they switched from mexinuggets to fiesta potatoes.
When Subway exploded it was because they advertised themselves as a healthier options since it was basically just deli sandwiches back in the day. The other big fast food places were losing money because people were interested in healthier options. Current day Subway is nothing like 90s subway as everything now comes in some horribly caloric sauce not basically a deli sandwich with just meats, cheeses, and veggies.
Only reason I got this was the arched window. Taco Bell was this thing we occasionally got for dinner when I was a kid, a handful of times a year at best, and when we got it, the restaurant didn't look like this; it was the old brown/yellow aesthetic.
Not all of us do. My boss showed me this shit a month+ ago. I didn't know, because I grew up in a town that didn't have a taco bell & poor enough that my family wasn't going to drive (thankfully—I get car sick) an hr just to get it.
It's a "Secret Menu Item" at a lot of Taco Bells. When I was a wee lad, our local one in Glendale (CA) still had the old first-gen "Sombrero and Tiles" logo and of course the Enchirito was still the star of the menu back then. They called it "The Boat" because it came in that tinfoil container. It was my Pops' favorite thing there.
I was probably in my early teens before I learned what the actual name of the menu item was, when I tried to order one at some other random location and had to explain what the hell it was. It was then that I found out it had been discontinued (the first? of several times it was).
Was also in high school when they started that first "party pack", which was a dozen tacos, mix n' match hard/soft. IIRC, it was $3 when it first dropped. The one I frequented was roughly halfway between the school and my best friend's house. We'd go there most days after school and punish one or two of those and still eat dinner a couple hours later.
Taco Bell has never been good, but that was balanced out by being dirt cheap when compared to other fast food places. The quality is still ass and has gone down significantly and now they cost more than most other fast food options.
Also, fuck them for removing the seven-layer burrito from their menu. The last time I tried to get one, they told me with a straight face it would cost $12 to make. "Because guac is so expensive, bro". It comes out of a fucking caulk gun, FFS. It can't cost that much.
I don't bother anymore and haven't for some time now.
Good excuse to not have fresh ingredients anymore. How long until they are selling THC infused taco paste in a push pop. I'm betting 3 or 4 years, less if their marketing department reads this post.
One time in ‘96 Seattle Aurora Taco Bell on 90th: my mom ordered us some food walked out and discovered a literal soup of a bean burrito. She walked back in and asked for a redo, they refused. Being a 5’3 Latina/Apache with no patience she slapped that burrito on the counter..it exploded obviously and was subsequently then asked to never return. I went there the either day and felt naughty 😈
I went to calpoly slo, and I remember when they renovated the tbell in town. It was supposedly one of the highest grossing late night taco bells at some points. The snaked lane for the line to order got WILD halloween week
The most memorable Taco Bell I frequented, had the drive through window on the wrong side. The order screen was on the driver side, but the pick up order was on the passenger side.
I remember when bean burritos were 29 and beef n' bean were 39 cents. But yeah, bean for .59, beef for .79 and Supreme for .99 was the price for a good while there.
Ours still does this. Then, like a madwoman, I keep them until I inevitably end up throwing away about 100 packets, because there are no dates on them...
I lived in a small town and we only had a Taco Tico. Similar to a Taco Bell menu and price-wise. That was the go-to when our fam went out to eat. Pretty sure mom paid $10-ish to feed five people. Couldn’t beat it.
When we went out of town and there was a Taco Bell available.. guess where we ate, lol.
The one I frequented as a lil' guy was an OG one like this. Didn't even have a drive-thru. Did have an outside walk-up window, though. The one I went to after highschool had the "Jazz Cup" interior, too.
Oh man, after a day at toys r us me and the boys would ride our bikes in the summer to Taco Bell and feast with a 5 dollar bill, which was hard earned selling my gyrados after a long day of trading.
Cheap food for us kids and good times. Right down the plaza from the pool hall and arcade where we spent most of our youth. Nothing like a cigarette after a few 90’s tacos and some Mountain Dew.
Lunches with my great grandma. She really couldn’t drive, but her apartment had a Taco Bell and a Pizza Hut we could walk to. So we always got one of those.
Liminal bell era was great. Like a Tron / Vaporwave hybrid but always seemed exotic to the regular crap places. $10 usually get you a overstuffed bag of treats. felt like a sack of bricks. So many parking lot radio food coma naps
I miss the little coin drop n catch platform games. I got pretty good at it and could almost always win something to add to the order when I was young.
I got a $3 per day allowance for food. My mom didn’t know I would just get a soft taco and a side of rice, then pocket the rest of the money. That’s how I saved up for gas each week.
I remember before they did this color change, however, back in '95 when they opened a new Taco Bell, my now wife and I worked there, we were always in the deep ass purple shirts, navy slacks uniforms, trolling in that heathered gray, sterile looking dining room.
Me and my 4 of my friends got really high and went to Taco Bell and we were going to order a 10 pack of tacos for everybody to share. I asked my friend to also order me a beef burrito. His high ass said “can we get a 10 pack with beef burrito” so we got 10 beef burritos. It was totally rad
The Taco Bell near me as a kid was inside the gas station 2 blocks from our house. I'd scrounge up 3-4 bucks and get a few tacos but also soda or candy.
Sat in those chairs as a Mallrat then as a Cable guy 5 years later on my lunch breaks.
I miss when fast food restaurants were distinguishable from one another and weren't obsessed with all looking like a cross between an apple store and the coffee bar in a corporate building.
I think I've only had Taco Bell a few times in my life... I always preferred taco time. I think most people do since we are down to like 3 in the whole city.
This was peak Taco Bell. Now it's pretentious, and the beefy five layer that used to be a dollar not so long ago is now a dollar per layer (yes, the one near me is $5 for a beefy five layer).
Tbell was first job beyond babysitting as an 80s teen. My best friend commented that the seating area is made uncomfortable on purpose because “they don’t want you there” which I hadn’t thought of. It does give managed expectations of being “waited on.” One time I was at the register and a mom with a young girl told me: “Would you wait on her.” I took the child’s order but hoped mom didn’t think I was going to give table service. Definitely not a table service kind of dining room, that’s for sure.
There is a thai restaurant near me that took over an old taco bell building a number of years ago. Everything has been updated except for the arch shape of the front windows. Can't not see the taco bell that used to be there every time I drive by.
Awww man, do they not still look like this? They do in my head. I haven't been in a Taco Bell in probably 20 years though. When I was in HS I used to get two 7-layer burritos just about every day (and was still only like 120 lbs soaking wet)...couldn't do that now.
Does anyone remember when they had steak fajitas? They had sauteed onions (and peppers?) and melted cheese. They might have had tomatoes too, but since I'm not a fan of tomatoes, none for me. Melty, creamy, warm soft tortilla comfort food. I miss them so much.
In my city, there's a former Taco Bell that was built onto and turned into an actual Mexican restaurant. You can still see remnants of the Bell That Once Was like that arched window back there and the bathrooms still have the same tile.
My local TB finally switched from this aesthetic to the newest one two years ago. It was actually remarkable how well everything held up. I think all the other TBs in the area went through at least 3 transformations before this one finally took the plunge.
I had a Meximelt the other day and it was glorious! Order a cheese roll up with beef and pick de gallo. The memories will flow. Get three or more, I want to say they came out to $2 and change each.
Brit Xennial here, not a clue but looks like the other stuff we had in the 80s and 90s anyway. I'm sure I had a tracksuit (shellsuit?) in those colors when I was a kid hahahaa
Can I be an old fart and complain that no matter which Taco Bell I've been to in the past decade or so, the inside has been completely disgusting? Same with Burger King.
There’s an ancient Burger King that I’ve stopped at in Montana while on a road trip that is decorated like this. They must have taken over a Taco Bell and saved money on the decor.
I remember they had a punch card promotion for some Rocky and Bullwinkle tie in where if you got 100 tacos you got a Rocky and Bullwinkle shirt. I wonder what happened to mine.
They need to make seats like these standard. You didn’t have to touch them and if you did need to turn it, you can do it with your butt. Clean fingers for eating. Boom.
I still know the phone number to the one by my mom’s house. If I dialed the last for digits in the wrong order when calling one of my friends folks house Taco Bell picked up.

Yes it's a seven layer burrito I don't know what the layers are but that's what they call it. It's vegetarian too I believe.

Apparently, they're still on the menu at select locations.

You can make these at home!

I spent $14.40 in a single meal. I didn’t pay attention to the prices while ordering in the drive through. I pulled around and the cashier said, “$14.40 please”. I said, “oh, no, I just had the one meal” “yes, it’s $14.40”.
elektrik_noise@reddit
Yeah, Taco Bell isn't cheap anymore. I remember $.79 bean burritos, $.99 other burritos when I was in college. Scrape a meal outta there for $2.10 after tax and be full. Though, of carbs and crap mostly lol but it put something heavy enough on your stomach.

Made an in person order and paid and contacted support. Got a follow up email like 2 weeks later asking for proof of the charge on like a bank statement and that’s fair but I can’t be bothered and I know that’s on me.
But in the 90’s I would have only been out like a dollar lmao.
Improving_Myself_@reddit
Assuming by "that" you mean "a full mean [for one person] for less than $5" you absolutely can still do that at TB, and it's the only fast food place I'm aware of where you still can.
As a 6' 250lbs man, I get a meal's worth of food from TB for $2.58.
Jolly_Line@reddit

Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
Same here , you guys need to remember that xennial (or GenX ) doesn't automatically mean American . I find the closer things get to the present the more experiences are universal , but a lot of U.S. 80s ad campaigns/franchises/magazines etc weren't that well known outside the U.S.
PumpkinSpice2Nice@reddit
I’m a Kiwi
Mr_SunnyBones@reddit
Exactly. A lot of the posters here dont realise that the world was a bigger place in the 80s and 90s , and while we'd get a lot of US references, there were a lot of totally alien US things that we knew nothing about.
luxtabula@reddit
Same here. Taco Bell wasn't really a thing until the early 2000s around me and didn't have this design aesthetic by then.
T46BY@reddit
This was 90s era Taco Bell, and it was after Subway blew up in the late 90s that Taco Bell started overhauling it's menu and image.
luxtabula@reddit
Subway and Taco Bell are two things I never would put together, but here we are. I remember the Subways by me as a kid had a gritty deli look to them.
T46BY@reddit
I was actually working at Taco Bell when they were jumping on the "health craze" Subway started and switched from dark meat chicken to "all white meat chicken" and then shortly after they switched from mexinuggets to fiesta potatoes.
luxtabula@reddit
I never would associate Taco Bell with healthy. But I never thought that of Subway either.
T46BY@reddit
When Subway exploded it was because they advertised themselves as a healthier options since it was basically just deli sandwiches back in the day. The other big fast food places were losing money because people were interested in healthier options. Current day Subway is nothing like 90s subway as everything now comes in some horribly caloric sauce not basically a deli sandwich with just meats, cheeses, and veggies.
Cool_Dark_Place@reddit
Yeah, the watermark says "Ultimate '80s Page", and this is definitely not an '80s Taco Bell. Taco Bell in the '80s was all brown and orange.
luxtabula@reddit
I'll take your word for it.
alysli@reddit
Only reason I got this was the arched window. Taco Bell was this thing we occasionally got for dinner when I was a kid, a handful of times a year at best, and when we got it, the restaurant didn't look like this; it was the old brown/yellow aesthetic.

Hilsam_Adent@reddit

Wow...back when you used to get a ton of food in a college student's price range.

Dude, the one across town from me still had this decor up until a few years ago when they remodeled it.
glamb70@reddit
I would get 6 tacos and 2 mexi-fries for under $5. Plus free drink refills!?! Hello bulk phase!! 😂

I miss cheap Taco Hell.
I still know the phone number to the one by my mom’s house. If I dialed the last for digits in the wrong order when calling one of my friends folks house Taco Bell picked up.
pgabbard37@reddit
Worked at Taco Bell during this period of time.

Dude everyone knows what a Taco Bell looks like.
Intelligent_West7128@reddit
We used to ditch school and order like 16 tacos. They used to be real cheap.

Back when I had a solid stomach...a bean burrito, a chili cheese burrito, and a chicken quesadilla
full_of_ghosts@reddit
I still get cravings pretty often. There's not one conveniently located for me, which is probably a good thing.
LeavesOfBrass@reddit
Yeah can I have the chicken quesadilla meal, and, can you make that a soft shell taco? Thanks.
