Any still play video games?

Seeing how video games took flight in our generation, Im curious if anyone still plays. As for me, though I don’t remember it, my dad brought home the first Pong from Atari. Growing up we had Atari, colecovision, Commodore 64, NES, gameboys, SNES, N64. Then I jumped to the PS1 to the PS4 I currently have. Also a couple Xbox’s and various other systems. My dad was an engineer always bringing now obscure systems and my uncle was really into rpgs like the old school ultima series but my uncle would never let us play his game for some reasons.
I’ll be 51 next week. I still like playing. It gives me a chance to unwind and switch gears. I don’t usually like to sit around and watch tv, as I would rather be doing something. The old saying “idle hands are the devils playground”. It keeps my hands and mind occupied. In the evenings it’s nice to kick back and fire up the PS4 while the GF watches her reality shows.
Currently jumping back and forth between Sekiro, Elden ring and dark souls. I also have an emulator on my MacBook Air with roms from many old games. Which is nice to have on business trips, hospital stays, etc.
User013579@reddit
53 here. Currently playing Borderlands 3 again on Xbox live. Big Halo fan. I really enjoy shooting games.
There was never a time in my adult life when I didn’t have at least 1 console. I’ve played a handful of online games and used to play on a MUDD )along with some dabbling in coding)
Much-Chef6275@reddit
An XBox Series X, 2 Series S, 2 Xbox Ones, a PS 4, 2 Nintendo Switches, plus various old consoles/handhelds and my phone. Currently working on LoZ Echoes of Wisdom.
Hartford0054@reddit
I grew up on Atari 2600, 5200, and then Nintendo. Briefly Super NES before going to college and laying down the video games in favor of a social life and studying. Now my youngest son is 10, and he loves Nintendo Switch. I discovered I have access to the old games. And the new Zelda and Metroid games are great. He and I just beat Super Punch Out. So yes, I am playing again after a long hiatus.
beaconposher1@reddit
My partner is 54 and a college professor. All week long, he teaches young people about science, and then on the weekends, he wants nothing more than to smoke a joint and play a video game. A few months ago he was going on and on about Destiny. I have only the vaguest idea what that is, so every time he started talking about Destiny, I started talking about Olympic gymnastics. It was a real Battle of the Nerds for a minute there.
galan_616_@reddit
yup.
lonomatik@reddit
Ummm…yes! Currently playing Half-Life 2 in VR and it’s friggin awesome. Looking forward to the new Black Ops as well.
Hfcsmakesmefart@reddit
What VR system you got?
lonomatik@reddit
Meta quest 2 - I have to use my sons gaming computer to get on steam to play outside of meta’s ecosystem though.
Hfcsmakesmefart@reddit
Ok so you’re playing half life on the pc connected by cable with the quest. Ahhh I didn’t realize you could do that, cool, yeah I’ve heard half life is a real game changer
lonomatik@reddit
Wireless actually- the cable was too restrictive so I made use of my second router and dedicated it to VR. Lots of trial and error but it’s been worth it. Getting my VR legs so I can dive into Half-Life Alyx soon!
Hfcsmakesmefart@reddit
Oh you didn’t mean Alyx, yeah that’s the game changer I’ve heard
lonomatik@reddit
Yeah, can’t wait to play that one.
Dick7Powell@reddit
I contracted at Sony First Party QA in Foster City between jobs for about a year in 2001. Surprisingly I was not the oldest tester there. I have name credits on the first Ratchet and Clank, and a first person shooter London gangster game The Getaway. After testing one game 8 hours a day and stress testing the same game for 22 hours before public release, and playing other platforms video games during breaks I pretty much stopped playing any video games. Once in a grand while like maybe every 7ish years I’ll bust out Grand Turismo or Midnight Club on my PS2 although I have a PS4 that I just use for my streaming services mostly and playing movies on dvd.

I just turned 50 and have been gaming almost all my life. I was big into WoW in my 30s. In my 40s until now I like easier games where I can just chill. Life is hard enough, my games don't need to be.
Right now I'm playing a poker type game called Balatro, took me a bit to get into it and actually win a game but now I love it. I'm also playing a horror fishing game called Dredge. It's nice to go out on my boat and fish. Not a ton of horror in it but I follow the rules and dock for the night lol.
NothingGloomy9712@reddit
If you want a recommendation for an MMO light game you might want to check out Once Human. The seasons run for a couple of months, you can chill and build, farm, collect blueprints or minimax your gear with mods, there is questing. You don't have to do any of that though. You can also skip a season if you want. Solo or group up activities.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I will check that out. It seems all my gaming friends have spread out to various games so it's hard to coordinate on one. When WoW was at it's peak it seemed almost every gamer had an account. You still had to coordinate on which server to play though and that was sometimes tricky.
NothingGloomy9712@reddit
There is new PvE content on the 17th, you can send me a message if you want to join the server I'll be on or if you have any questions about the game.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I checked out a video and it doesn't look like the game for me. I'm not a fan of combat where you have to aim as well as move around to avoid getting hit. It's too much for me. WoW you just locked on to your target and traded blows until someone died. I also like turn-based games so it's slower paced. Thanks anyway though, the game does look cool.
S0whaddayakn0w@reddit
I heard about Dredge throughDave the Diver, which features a DLC for Dredge. The game is fun, the DLC is too.
I'm turning 45 and have been gaming since 14 and have the same approach. Maybe look into RPGs like AC Odyssey, Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and the like if you like story driven games.
Currently l'm replaying Disco Elysium, one of the best games out there
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I haven't been a big fan of story games. I tried a few but I'd rather just play. I tried one of the fallout games but did not like the combat so I uninstalled.
S0whaddayakn0w@reddit
Hey, to each his own. I like that so many people our age still are gaming though
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I'm hoping retirement homes in 20 years have arcades or LAN party rooms. I feel like a lot of gamers will be moving into homes by then.
S0whaddayakn0w@reddit
It's practically mandatory IMO. Maybe by the time we'll get there, it'll be standard issue
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I sure hope so, I'd go into a home early just to have LAN parties again.
S0whaddayakn0w@reddit
Ha, oh there's something to look forward to with old age!
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I hope so. Most of my friends have spread out all over the place and I always thought it would be cool to all retire in the same area. So many people have different retirement plans though. A few friends are not even sure they can retire, which is sad.
S0whaddayakn0w@reddit
That is sad. I hope it won't come to that.
With how fast technology developed in our lifetime, by then they surely will have inented something ingenious, that will bring people together easier
A girl can dream, at least
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
That is true, we do have video phones now. I remember when they were a thing in the 80s but it was on a TV attached to the phone. It never really took off. Now we take it for granted that we can just use our pocket rectangle and see anyone we know in the world instantly.
OldBrownWookiee@reddit
Star Wars Galaxies had me during the WoW days. You can probably tell by my username I played a Wookiee.
MrsHorrible@reddit
I played a Bothan and was a creature handler until the devs messed with it and made it unsatisfying.
OldBrownWookiee@reddit
Wookiee Ranger/Creature Handler here. I re rolled my specs a couple of times, I stopped playing when the Jedi class popped.
Everything became a grind for most of my guildies to get the Holocron. Lost interest soon after. I played on Kettemoore and I’m still buds with a couple of the folks in the guild.
I’d start playing at 10 after feeding my infant and then run till he had to eat again around 2ish. I remember this time fondly.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I've played many Star Wars games over the years but stopped around the early 2000s. I just found they got really hard and I would butt my head against a wall. The first I played was X-wing on PC, I got to the mission where you have to protect a frigate from tie fighters and I could never figure it out.
OldBrownWookiee@reddit
If you have a console the Jedi Survivor games are well done.
I remember X Wing and the frustrations with it!!
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I have a PS4 and just picked up a PS+ Extra sub so I will keep my eye out. I played another Star Wars game on Super Nintendo, I think it was called Rogue Squadron. First two missions were great, not too hard, very fun. Then I get a mission where you have to "trip" AT AT walkers in an A wing with your cables. You had to trip 3 of them in a time limit. I must've tried over a dozen times and could trip one but would get shot or crash all the time.
OldBrownWookiee@reddit
I remember that one too!! Pain in the ass!!
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
I think I tried one or two more Star Wars games and just concluded that they are too hard for me. And this is coming from a guy who beat all the Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden games.. well, on NES or SNES, not the new ones.
MSotallyTober@reddit
My best friend from childhood met his (now ex) wife on EverQuest.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
wow, wasn't that the first MMO? I heard that game was a grind but fun.
MSotallyTober@reddit
He tried to get me into it, but I can’t do the whole MMO thing. I generally like games that I can pick up and put down.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
Yeah, MMOs are a time suck. I also think it's highly dependent on who you play with. When I started World of Warcraft I was playing with a bunch of college buddies. It was nice to reconnect with them. Playing online with voice chat was like a long telephone call where you're all doing the same thing. I got my dad playing for awhile and it was nice to chat with him and play a game. Once people started quitting it was much less fun. Playing with strangers was a mix of good and bad but mostly not good.
DoctorEego@reddit
Sounds to me like you'd enjoy Dave The Diver, they did a Dredge crossover event that ended up being a permanent feature in the game.
Balatro has killed whatever social life I have left, it's a really good game once you get the hang of it.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
lol, I played Balatro and Dredge last night.
Pavementaled@reddit
At 52, your comment parallels mine. I started playing in 1976 at home with Pong, and havnt stopped except for a brief time in the 90's when I was out there actually living and shit...
Currently I am obsessed with my favorite all time franchise, Baldur's Gate 3. I can't stop starting a new and different character to see how the story changes with each run though. Before BG3, and still occasionally, I will play GTA V, Red Dead Redemption and Elder's Scroll Online.
Singing_Wolf@reddit
I was so disappointed when I learned that BG3 would not have local co-op. I really only play together with my wife, and we loved the first two on console.
GandolfMagicFruits@reddit
I'm all in on BG3 right now as well. Getting close to finishing my first playthrough.
Pavementaled@reddit
At about 15 play through. I never thought I would do more than one or two.
Z_Opinionator@reddit
Have you tried Cyberpunk 2077 yet? One of the best games I have ever played.
happyhomemaker29@reddit
I started programming my Dad’s Commodore 64 and my siblings would play the games I programmed into it. Then it was a Tandy, I think? And eventually I went to the A/V club in school and their old school computer system and now it’s the iPhone and iPad for me. Hard to believe it’s been so long and what I started with.
thedykeichotline@reddit
Balatro is just terrific!!!
Demented-Alpaca@reddit
horror fishing?
Man our video games have come a LONG ass way from Space Invaders haven't they?
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
Have they ever. I played this racing game called Dirt and it looks real, it looks like an actual rally car race. It's crazy. I remember playing Atari 2600 and going "oooh.. check out the graphics on this thing". I started when you controlled a red square or something so a game where you controlled a jet or car was amazing.
akajondoe@reddit
Dredge was a good game to relax and drink a beer.
PeaTearGriphon@reddit
Indeed, I bought the game a few weeks back and have done that on a few weekend nights.

GarpRules@reddit
Yes. Most of us, I’d guess. Currently about halfway through BG3. Takes me months to finish a game now because I have a lot of irons in the fire, but I still play at least once a week.
Hfcsmakesmefart@reddit

im way past your era but i love to talk about this.
i love video gaming! my dad is a ‘73 and played lots of doom, castlevania, mike tyson’s punch out, and much much more. he bought an n64 when it came out, but i think he was working full time by then and was “too old” for nintendo. this was when sony was the king of video games, my dad would pick up stuff like silent hill instead (which i love too!). he gave it to my oldest brother, in which i inherited from him as a hand-me-down since im the youngest sister and child. loved it. loved it so much. i miss hearing ocarina of time’s title screen music. gaming is one of the biggest ways i connect with my dad. i’m glad even though im young, i got to experience playing games with a dingy box TV with my brothers, like my dad did as a kid. thank god for emulators, which my dad also utilized on the computer. that’s how i got to play any SNES/Sega Genesis games that weren’t remastered/remade on a future console. now i can look up “chrono trigger free online” and a website can run it like nothing, which is crazy to me.
i started gaining consciousness in the 2000s, so kids my age liked the nintendo DS or xbox360, or some other flash games on the computer. now i like the nintendo switch. i want to get dragon ball sparking zero on the PS5, but i don’t have a PS5 but my dad said he will get one next month-ish. i can’t wait to play it and maybe my dad will play elden ring. i think i will talk about all of those games to young people in the future when im my dads age like he does to me :). gaming is awesome.
sorry for length, hehe.

Electronic_Common931@reddit

Just the 1000s of hours on steam games here.
evilBogie666@reddit
Currently 1300 hours on forza horizon 5. But I hardly ever play. I forgot I even have it most hours.
Puffpufftoke@reddit
Same but for me it’s TF2. At least a decade playing the same game and often the same maps. I don’t have the fast twitch that some of these young’ns have, but I make up for it with experience. On pause right now, as I’m busy robbing trains in RDR2.
Stranglehold316@reddit
I had to cut back on TF2 after the dreams started. In almost 40+ years, I spent more time playing that game than any other...
Puffpufftoke@reddit
By far. I’ve got several tattoos and one of them is a level 1 turret. It’s my game after all!
Stranglehold316@reddit
But which version of the level one? The old school TF where you were able to use concussion grenades to launch yourself across the map, medics could infect/heal and demomen had the time bombs, or the current version?
Puffpufftoke@reddit
The current version.
Gunrock808@reddit
Man I loved the original on PC. Played it to death. But I waited a long time to play tf2. At the time I couldn't find any good tutorials so finally I just jumped in. Someone started a kick vote immediately because i didn't know what was going on. I was a medic and didn't even have time to figure out the controls or how to heal. I got kicked and never went back. 😔
Puffpufftoke@reddit
There are hundreds of servers that you can join. Many are just for goofing off and working towards achievements. Others can be tough but I have not seen someone booted for lack of skill. Those are easy kills! Perhaps in competitive server. There are even servers now with 100 toons. No one can tell what is happening to any one individual. Come on back and give it a go! It’s Halloween time now in TF2. Always more fun at this time of year.
ImHereForThePies@reddit
I don't want to know how many hours I put into Horizon 4! Most of those hours were grinding for skill points!
I have 5, I just haven't played in many months so I have probably 3 hours invested in that one!
evilBogie666@reddit
I had quite a few in 4 as well. Played 5 pretty hardcore for a while after release. Now I only do the playground games.
ImHereForThePies@reddit
I was trying to finish all the seasonal events and trying to earn backstage passes. It got to a point I was so fixated on trying (because I'm a sucky driver during events) I wasn't enjoying myself! Gave up!
It's getting cold out here, so almost time to find indoor things to play, might pick it up again soon, maybe I'll work on 5 instead!

amazetome@reddit
Maybe the sickness thing is our old age kicking in! I can play things like BeatSaber with no problem, but I tried to play the VR Assassin's Creed and got vertigo.
JJDiet76@reddit

Browncoat_Loyalist@reddit
Yeah, PC, PCVR, working consoles from every generation (except my sega genisis, that one perished and I haven't found a replacement). A gaming laptop that goes with me most places, Phone and tablet with links to my PC and a wireless controller to game on the go. Add in the phone games and I could spend nearly every waking moment playing games, even away from home (and do quite often, on lunch or in a waiting room).
happycj@reddit
I'm 56, so at the elder end of GenX, and I played video games when you put quarters in them at the arcade, but never made the transition to controllers. I played bass in metal and funk bands and had at least one full-time job since I was 16, so I didn't have a lot of time or money for sitting on the couch with a controller in my hands.
But about 10 years ago, I was in a co-living situation with several people MUCH younger than me, and they had ALL THE CONSOLES. I was working from home, so got to watch them play. Eventually they asked me why I didn't play and I said I'd never gotten the hang of the controller, so they asked me what type of game might appeal to me and I said, "I dunno... a post-apocalyptic shooter, I guess?" and they put in Fallout: New Vegas.
So I now play Fallout 3/4/NV/76 and Starfield. And that's it. Every once in a while I'll run through Portal 2 again, just for laughs, but that's it. (I've tried Skyrim, Witcher, GTA, Cyberpunk 2077, Outer Wilds, etc., but I live my Bethesda, I guess!)
Right now I just wanna retire and play Starfield all day. Maybe while sitting on an exercise bike, or something. :-D
No-Comment3070@reddit
I so miss arcade culture. Hanging out with friends, no responsibility. Play games, get a pizza a next door, walk up the street and go to a movie.
happycj@reddit
It was pretty cool.
I wonder if there is any way a “That 70s Show” kind of sitcom treatment could ever be written about that culture? It’s so foreign of an idea today, I dunno how they’d make it relevant to people today…
JelloBooBoy@reddit

happycj@reddit
While it was the post-apocalypse shooter style that brought me to the Fallout franchise, I now play Fallout 76 online and almost entirely dedicate my time to building camps and selling stuff to other players. I'll even sneak past enemies instead of shooting them, nowadays.
And in Starfield, I finally have the skills to start building bases on different planets, and link them together, like in Fallout 4. So I'm a happy camper in Starfield, too! :-)
Pretend_Bicycle337@reddit
Is there any mindless more innocent games like centipede or dig dug or donkey Kong or Astroids or am I stuck in a time warp??? lol…. I’ve literally thought about spending 10-20K and buying a bunch of old school machines 🤪

OG gamer here. I got an Atari in 1979 when I was 13, hung out in arcades through the 80s, got an NES in 1989 and moved on to PCs in the early 90s. I still play games several times a week on Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile. I moved away from PC gaming as I spend the majority of my working time sitting in front of my PC, so it is hard to spend my down time in my office.

I was also employed in the pc and video game business after college in the 90s. Worked at the same company that brought Tetris to the US, then I later joined a games division of Sony Europe.
southernrail@reddit
I love survival horror.....Dead Space, Resident Evil etc....I also love open world adventures like Days Gone and the new Red Dead Redemption. Games have come SOOOOOO far and they are stunning to look at now. I never quit. never will.
Wmharvey@reddit
I agree. I love horror movies and novels but they don’t hold a candle to the thrills a horror game brings. Madison in VR took years off my life I’m sure. Btw, the rocks you’ve painted are super cool! I’m impressed.
southernrail@reddit
ZERO possibility I could play Madison in VR. zero. you are correct, movies cannot hold a candle to them at all. the amount of work that goes into a design farrrrrr exceeds the most recent fifteenth million remake of Paranormal Activity. lol. I can't get enough. super stoked the new Alien Isolation is being made.
Wmharvey@reddit
I tried to play Alien Isolation when I first got my PS5 but got so lost in the ship and it was taking me forever to do the tasks at hand I gave up before the alien even entered the picture. I have a terrible sense of direction irl, and it translates to games as well. I routinely somehow double back from the direction I just came from without realizing it repeatedly, wasting so much time. If I’m playing a horror game where I have to escape something I’m usually completely screwed because I panic and just run around in circles thinking I’m going in the right direction.
southernrail@reddit
I understand ALLLLLL of that and I am the exact same way. nice to meet you. what I have to do is watch a walkthrough beforehand so I know the general area and directions I need to go. it's too much if I don't. a little research is def. needed for me. it's not cheating, per se...but my vision and balance won't allow me to play the game as intended, so this is my workaround.
Alien wasn't the best for gameplay and I readily admit that. It is SLOW. The Alien doesn't make a appearance until well into the game. That said, it was a gorgeous game and I appreciated the slow build the game has.

Alarmed_Engine_910@reddit
Guilty as charged! After taking a long break after the SNES days, I came back to gaming last year in April when I bought myself a Switch. Since then, I’ve completed 19 games… 😬😁🤓🕹️ Helps me with stress management.
Wmharvey@reddit
I loved my Atari 2600 when I was in 6th grade. Then had a Sega in med school. It was a great way to blow off steam with my roommate in between long hours in the library or labs. Then nothing for almost 30 years. Now I’m embarrassed to admit how many hours I’ve spent playing several titles on my PS5. I could have learned a new language or how to play guitar in the time I’ve spent playing HellDivers 2 alone this year. Or at least become proficient in Spanish. Now I’m getting sucked into Space Marines 2. Before that it was Alan Wake 2, Dead Space remake and Reside Evil 4, 7 and 8. Games are so much more complex and hard than they were back in those earlier console years but also so rich and rewarding. I keep hoping this will help ward off mental decline in terms of learning new controls and game mechanics (sounds crazy maybe but it beats watching tv passively).

Your comment resonates with me on several levels… The only thing is I have made time to learn a new language in the process of dedicating countless hours to gaming. 😅😆 I’m currently on a 1,076-day steak in Duolingo and can now speak Italian. If you have a gamer-mentality, I think you’ll be very entertained by this app. 🤙🏽
Wmharvey@reddit
That’s seriously impressive. Duolingo uses game strategy to motivate people with the badges etc which is really smart. The Atlantic (I think) did an interesting article on DuoLingo which is kind of how I feel it helped (or didn’t) me. Ive learned a lot of vocabulary through but can’t really speak it any before than before. I think they’ve changed some of their methods though to try and change this for people. Learning a new language is no joke. Kudos!!

Yeah, gamified learning! IMO, it’s so effective!

51, still play. I'm playing an open world game and bumped into a guy using voice chat. We've been chatting and playing for the last two weeks, he's 66, retired and gamed his whole life. He has played with guys in their 70s. Gaming seems like a great way to spend your time when you're retired, especially to more social games where you interact with ppl. Seems more healthy then sitting in front of the tv.
Hfcsmakesmefart@reddit
Which game, may I ask?
NothingGloomy9712@reddit
Once Human. I used to play wow 5 years ago, I enjoy survival games and Once Human gives you a casual experience in both those types of games. There are also rewards for casual farms so you don't have to grind an unreasonable amount. There are a lot of 30 or 40 plus gamers on the PvE servers, on NA anyways.
The new PvE season is starting on the 17th, anyone interested in grouping on NA is welcome to send me a message. New players are great, I am staying away from the try hard vibe. I minmax my own gear because I enjoy it, but I don't expect other to and don't get my panties in a twist if they don't.
seymour5000@reddit
I’m still a Nintendo and Sony PS fan. I am picky on my games and like fun games like Mario and Sly. I cannot do first person or realistic games; they give me nausea. I go gaming in winter bc I live in a four season state and there isn’t much to do when the sun sets at 5:30pm.
Emotional_Channel_67@reddit
I play Betamax! Just kidding. I used to like WoW and CoD in my 30s but I stopped playing in my late 30s. A few reasons. Main one was my wife as she hated it and called it a waste of time. I am glad I stopped but when I get older and I am less mobile, I will probably go back to playing.

What kind of a question is that? Our generation invented this shit.
NothingGloomy9712@reddit
True, but those of use that have been playing since we were kids have went through the whole "video games are for kids" crap. A lot of ppl stopped playing when that pressure was there.

For real doh. We were calling a paid tip line to figure out how to get past some random puzzle in Kings Quest 3 almost 40 years ago.

wolves_hunt_in_packs@reddit
I don't live in the US/EU, there was no help, period. Occasionally clues from overseas would filter over to us eventually, but otherwise there wasn't really any recourse if you were stuck. That was it for a game, basically.
GandolfMagicFruits@reddit
That makes my inner child sad. 🙁
Cool_Dark_Place@reddit
This was how me and my best friend in high school got all the special/finishing moves for Mortal Kombat II. The arcade in my mall was right across from Waldenbooks. We'd go in there with a notepad, find the strategy guide, write down all the moves, then run back to the arcade to try them out!😁

Honestly, with the help I got from Nintendo Power, and just generally being pretty decent at video games, I didn’t need them that often.

51M here, still play, but I limit myself to never more than 1.5-2 hours per day…otherwise I’d be up till 4am!
I’m single now, but I was always amazed at how much shit my ex-wife would give me for playing video games for a couple of hours each day. Sure, she could go get a manicure/pedicure that would take an hour, or go shopping for a similar amount of time, or watch some brainless housewives show on TV…but somehow I’m the asshole for playing video games?
Meanwhile, I distinctly remember my dad hitting the bar just about every night after work and not being home for a couple of hours, so I think in comparison to that, she had it pretty good. I’m present if she needs something, I’m sober, and I’m not bothering her!

I just started playing again, this year, I had actually stopped when Covid hit. Now I’m playing until 1:30AM again. This obviously not sustainable.
I play open world games and I love them, I’m not into multiplayer games, I wonder if that’s a generationsl thing. However, the latest one I’m playing—Assassins Creed Valhalla—I’m 100+ hours in and probably only half way through. I mean that’s crazy when you think of the opportunity cost of all that time, but I can’t say I’d really be spending it much better if I wasn’t playing. I’d probably just be watching tv until late which is much worse because then your hands are idle to do things like snacking or drinking. Thats basically what I did in the 3 years i didn’t play.
I do have a wonderful time in these worlds, Fallout: New Vegas is an especially satisfying game, for anyone reading looking for recs, I highly recommend that one.
I haven’t read the comments but I imagine there’s plenty of genxers that don’t get it, I’m at the tail end of the generation. For those who don’t, it’s like watching a show or reading a book in which it takes you to an imaginary world or scenario except the main difference is you get to participate in it. You’re the protagonist.

I think I missed some history-rich gene re: video games. I might be too early GenX. I lived in Pinball palaces & then quarter arcades with friends…but I was too cheap to blow my all my quarters so I watched as much as played and always went home with 1/2 my quarters (and was never High Score good at it anyway, but I did have some serious Asteroids game).
My friends had Pong, and then Atari. I thought I was fancier because I saved up and bought an IntelleVsion (brand) game system with my paper route money…which was higher tech graphics.
I was just always more into my guitar, than I was gaming. And our parents threw us out of the house all the time anyway - I wasn’t allowed to be that lazy during the day. VG was just something we did (sometimes) when with my friends when I was young.
TLDR: I wasn’t as cool as you!

So cool to read this!
I'm comin' at gaming from the other side. I was really into arcades, pinball, a friend had an Atari and later came Asteroids, Tempest, etc... But my interests moved to music. Here I am... A lifetime later... As an old git, I found myself watching and enjoying my youngest kids (in their 20's) play games on their PC's for HOURS! So much fun.
I just built myself a smokin' hot, badass PC for music. But... I saw some gaming controllers stashed in the shed with my name on them. I think the kids are nudging me into gaming. You know... Not that I wasn't going to do it on my own. lol

Elder GenX and I know I’ll get downvoted for this but I grew out of gaming 15-ish years ago when I watched the addiction to it takeover my kid and spouse’s lives. I’ve been playing my whole life and used to be a huge gamer. I played WoW when I was younger. I was in one of the the top raiding guilds on my server. Came home from work and played until 2am. I quit when I realized it was basically a second job that I wasn’t getting paid for. I also played a lot of League of Legends and Call of Duty type games.
These days, I really only play single player games that are a little slower paced. I love single player RPGs. Elder Scrolls/Fallout are favorites. I played Elden Ring for like 1000 hours. I no longer like competitive multiplayer games. I’m too slow, the kids are too fast, and I never was very good at them anyway. Now I’d rather find all of the shiny things or go on quests. Word of Warcraft is one of my alltime favourites as well. I started playing in 2006, played a lot until 2012 (including raids, arena and such), then made a break, came back several times and am now stuck with Classic for about a year.

I tried APEX in between breaks from PUBG but found that I enjoy the masochism of PUBG.
Recently picked it back up after not playing for a year and change and the game is completely different, but exactly the same.
LumpyheadCarini2001@reddit
I've played a lot of PUBG but something about the movement in Apex has me hooked. The gunplay is really good too imo
OldBrownWookiee@reddit
I enjoyed the gunplay in APEX, however, my old ass was getting nausea playing in FPP.
In PUBG I can switch to TPP when that happens.
The queues aren’t as healthy as APEX since the game is 7 years old and the devs seem to keep making missteps with the in game changes.
I enjoy being able to jump in, get a quick couple of matches and then jump off.
The newer RPG games have too much stuff in them for me to be able to get into a longer game.

I have a Nintendo Switch and play Fortnite mostly.
Some of the really good games I've played on it are L.A. Noir and Outer Worlds. The open-world type games are great.
HumanMycologist5795@reddit
Agreed. How is LA Noir and Outer Worlds? I was thinking about getting them.
SubBass49Tees@reddit
LA Noir is an open world game but has a scripted storyline. It's a really challenging game to play (especially the driving sequences), but the 1940s Los Angeles noir cop vibe is great. Not for the sensitive types, it uses period-accurate language, including racial slurs, in the dialogue.
Outer Worlds is cool to me because it has a compelling storyline and what feels like infinite possibilities for game play. It's open-world, but there are some scripted sequences. Great sci-fi stuff. Awesome weapons. You get to make moral choices, so as a GenX guy, it reminded me of an interactive Choose Your Own Adventure book.
HumanMycologist5795@reddit
Thanks. I'll look into both. Have a great weekend.

I game daily on my PS5. I built a gaming PC but its also at my work desk and doesn't let me break from the office so I like the couch experience. I play story based games and like to play 30 minutes to 1 hour each day like reading chapters in a book. This way, I tend to only play 6-10 games a year but build a thorough relationship with each one. I have my next few games planned so as soon as I finish one, I have my next one immediately without skipping a beat. I am playing Witcher 3 now for the first time and just finished the Resident Evil 4 remake.

My dad brought home one of those pong games as well. I remember controllers with a knob to twist to move your paddle. Then of course Atari 2600. The last I really played was the 90s. I had a Nintendo system with a gun and you got to shoot bank robbers. And then one night I broke my finger. I didn’t know, and tried to play some mortal combat. It made me sick to my stomach and I lost interest in playing. I do have a VR, but multiple surgeries and broken bones made it hard to move so that’s been collecting dust. I’m almost healed, time to try it out again.

The short version for me: totally enthralled with the early 80s Arcade games. Got a ColecoVision when they came out (lucky me :) ).
Then it was on and off for awhile. When the PS1 came out, that (and the family 48/Pentium) started a whirlwind of gaming PCs and consoles. I'm sitting here staring at 3 of them + my emulation box right now, trying to decide 😂.
I spent about 15 years as a full time touring bassist - and you got three choices after a gig: Hang out and drink with your bandmates, hang out and drink at some local party somewhere, or head back to the hotel and stare at the TV. The games kept me occupied and kept me and my liver out of trouble. (Mostly anyway)

I build retro consoles and arcade machines in my spare time, so yeah. I still play. Aside from the occasional Switch game, I don’t really play much of anything released later than 1999 or so though.
For me, playing games is generally about nostalgia, and by the time I got in my 20s, I was both too poor and too busy working to play video games. N64 was my last console until I got a Switch at the beginning of the pandemic.

Never was huge into consoles after the 90's hit even though I grew up with the first Atari 2600 and Nintendo and almost everything since.

Ive played ever PC game known to man going way back when you could fit 4/5 of them on a floppy on your c64. First favorites I remember are D&D Hillsfar and Pools of Radiance.
Today, my active games in steam (and others) are:
Diablo 4 (currently playing the new update)

I still play - mostly PC, I did grow up on Atari and Colecovision (with the kickass Atari Adapter!), but I just always hated consoles. I have WAAAAY too much love for Fallout 3/4/New Vegas, and I’m still a CRPG nut (it’s much harder to find an ACTUAL RPG video game these days, because of all the “so-called” RPG games included these days in the RPG category - while there are plenty of games with good story, so many “RPGs” are lacking in character customization, inventory management, strategy elements, item crafting, etc. - I’m too much of a snob that way.)

Currently have almost 1000 hrs into Warzone after nearly 20 years of playing COD.

Remember my dad bringing home a atari for a few weeks then he had to sell it then we had a c64 had a Gameboy a sega genesis first console I bought was a ps1 then had a Xbox countless hours online playing halo2 then had a 5 or 6 year break from all video games. A friend had finals asked me if I'd hold her ps3 for a few weeks gtav had just come out and I was hooked. Ended up with a Xbox one and continued playing gtav and a few other games online.
Haven't upgraded yet don't feel like dropping the 1k$ for a series x and a 4k TV.
Still play either rdr2, gtav, no mans sky, call of duty. Bf4 I got offered sponsorship like 10 years ago when I was mid to late 30s I turned it down because I play to unwind and once there's money on the line it wouldn't be fun anymore.
A buddy and I have been playing GTAV from day one online we were never tryhards but we can throw down and have had thousands make accusations that we are either modding or cheating and cannot accept that 2 old men are kicking their asses. I have thousands of hours in that game split in between 10 accounts.

My wife and I have become pretty obsessed lately. We have an Xbox and. Switch that we play but we are currently balls deep into retro gaming. I bought a Arcade 1up Countercade for her and modded it with 7500 games. Stat started us down the road we're on now. Next I bought a full sized 1up, modded it and stuck 15,000 games on that. Then I bought a pre-modded Ridge Racer 1up. On with a steering wheel. It has 200 racing games on it. All that stuff is in the basement and we're starting to spiff it up with plans for a gaming theme down there. We are just full grown children at this point!

I "still" play games too in my 50s. Honestly, I get sorta sick and tired of people who act like this is something your supposed to stop.
You see all these questions on marriage subs like, "My husband is 30. He still plays video games. Should I be concerned?" and the answer is that it's a stupid question. It's like asking if you should be concerned that he still reads books. I mean, if he is 30 and still reading the Hungry Caterpillar, that's sorta weird and he might be Forest Gump. But if he's reading a textbook or a non-fiction book or some NYT best selling novel, that's pretty normal.
Video games are just a medium......same as TV, movies, music, books, etc. Nobody ever is made to feel like there's something wrong with them because they STILL listen to music.

I never really got into it. Sure, we had NES because there was previously nothing like that you could have at home. I’d spent time in arcades at pinball machines & over at gamer friends houses, but after about 1991, none of it had any appeal to me.
Fast forward thirty years & we mostly all have smartphones. I’ve had a couple games on there to pass the time during moments when I’m otherwise unprepared (didn’t bring a book, notebook, puzzle, activity), but I’m still not a video gamer per se. I don’t own a gaming system. I think the old NES is still kicking around in the attic somewhere.
For me, whenever conversations switch to video games, it all just goes in one ear and out the other. It’s like sports, religion, celebrity gossip and the like.

56 M - so I guess I'm an "Atari age" GenXer.
Not much game playing now. My old computer likely couldn't handle modern games, the emulator MAME is probably its limit. I'm guessing nothing beyond the level Duke Nukem 3D would be playable on it.
Also had a pong game as a child for a while (before my dad's concerns about images being burned into the t.v.). Went in with my brother on an Atari 2600/VCS. Neighbour kid friend of my brother has an Intellivision, and a later friend had a Sega Genesis and Colecovision. Friends of my parent's kid had the Magnavox Odyssey 2. One old system I've never seen in person is the Vectrex system; closest I got to that was the old arcade games with vector graphics.
After the Atari we had a Vic 20 and then an Apple II clone later on. In high school was the Commodore PET computers (dungeon a favourite game).
Never was that great at very many games but plunked out a considerable amount of quarters in the local arcades and other places which had arcade game(s) - such as one ski hill, a K-mart, a pizza place, the roller rink, etc.

oldfogey12345@reddit
Totally unfounded bullshit theory time.
The whole video games are for kids stuff came from a time when parents were watching their kid move large blocks around a screen on their Atari game and could not imagine an adult wanting to do that more than watch TV.
Nintendo comes along and really leans into the whole kid friendly thing. Big, noisy, flashy arcades attract way more exitable kids than tired adults.
Video games have grown up now. Warnings to keep kids of a certain age away from some games are a thing.
It's just an old, incorrect belief from our past. Video games are no longer for kids.
DeezSaltyNuts69@reddit
They never were just for kids dude - who do you think filled the early arcades and invented all those pinball and arcade machines it was boomers
kids couldn't afford the early home consoles, that was adults buying them for the family to use
so many of you seem to want to rewrite history because you were too young to know what was happening in a given decade
oldfogey12345@reddit
Yes, adults build and produce a wide variety of things for children from diapers to toys to clothing. When children produce those things, people start talking about child labor laws.
And yes, parents buy things that kids can't afford, from diapers to clothing to toys to games.
All of the video game marketing had kids in it. I may be missing something but I don't ever remember seeing a video game ad with anyone older than a teenager before 2000 or so.
Video games were meant for kids at one point. They no longer are. If you are like me and love them regardless, you probably played them as an adult when they were looked at as childish.
DeezSaltyNuts69@reddit
Got it, you're one of those if you didn't see it, then clearly it didn't happen

I collect consoles and physical games. And I play daily as well. In the last two years, I bought 3 VR headsets as well. I also bought a late model 65" Panasonic 1080p plasma to game on and my PS5 and Series X look BETTER on it than they do on my 4K HDR tv. The motion is so much better at 60fps. Oh, and I can play 3D games which are all kinds of fun.

I used to have a computer that was dedicated to MAME, as well as pretty much every other emulator I could find and there's no real need for that there's a site I go to that let you play a lot of the old retro games in the browser.
I haven't bought any controllers yet so I just use the keyboard otherwise I feel I would be spending a lot of time that I don't really have to play a lot of games. When I was a kid I used to go to the arcades thankfully we have two in my hometown every Friday when my parents went to do the weekly grocery shopping. So when I found MAME years ago and found all of those old arcade ROMs I was in heaven.

49 here. I have always been into the games that had a storyline. Modern warfare campaigns, call of duty campaigns, last of Us one and two, Jedi survivor, etc. The occasional ROMs for Tetris and Street fighter, or gauntlet and Star wars! I gamed a ton before I had children. After I had kids it seemed like anytime I picked up a controller within 30 seconds there was a "Daaaaaaad!!!" And I would have to deal with something else. Now that my kids are grown, I still love to play the storyline games (which let's be honest, the good ones are getting fewer and farther between) but usually after about 30 or 40 minutes the arthritis kicks in in the knuckles or the knees and I have to put it down and move around. Getting old sucks.

I play sporadically until a new Final Fantasy game comes out and then I play every spare minute of the day and night until I beat it. I’m obsessed. Then it’s back to sporadic play of mostly The Sims, but I like RPG games too. We had an Atari and a NES when I was a kid, but my Mom had PacMan fever and then Dr. Mario mania and I rarely got a chance to play as a kid. LOL! In my twenties, I got my own PS1, rented a copy of Final Fantasy 8, and got hooked (into buying every freaking PlayStation console due to new Final Fantasy releases…) My son (31) is a big time PC gamer. Still play the games we grew up with. I converted an Arcade1Up (from Walmart/best buy) into a retro gaming platform. Old school arcade (1979-1993 or so), NES, and SNES.

Just like most here I started at the very beginning on a friends Atari and first generation PC's and have played at different levels as I've gotten older. PS1, PS3, PC followed. 49 here, and these days I mostly play single-player open world games. Not that many from the past 10 years or so. Been hitting fanmade romhacks of older GTA games through an emulator more lately, some Elder Scrolls series, and (somewhat belatedly) getting into messing around in Project Zomboid lately. Also been enjoying some Pokemon romhacks, even if we were a bit old to be in the target audience when the originals came out
Got back into gaming more during the PS2 era, and mainly played on console up through the PS4. The past few years, I've been on the PC side a lot more. (Not least because of the fun to be had with emulators and ROMs-- including for some games I wanted but couldn't afford back in the day.) Are you talking stand up arcade machines or home consoles? Funny story, my wife and I were visiting our Alma Mater (UNC-Greensboro) and in the University Center, we found a room filled with what looked like black lights. We entered to find an E-Sports Room filled with Game Consoles and Large Screen monitors. My eye opened wide at the sight. The managers said that they had all the major consoles and often had tournaments there as well. I looked at my wife and said that it was probably a good thing that they didn’t have this place when I was here, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten any schoolwork done! It was bad enough that they had standup machines! 😂

LogicalBus4859@reddit
Broadly speaking, we were a generation left to entertain ourselves so we are very good at it. I put video games into that category. We never outgrew video games because they evolved and aged as we did. I started on Apple II, evolved through Nintendo and Playstation. Still have a PS4 and will eventually get a PS5 once there's a must have title for me. Right now I'm playing Cyberpunk and Starfield. I started a re-play through of RDR2 that I have to get back to.
I like to think this is going to change how we retire and, eventually, live in nursing homes. I wouldn't think less of anyone who chose to spend their retirement in a virtual world over the real one. I have a few games that I like to call my dementia games. When I'm 90 and can't remember yesterday, I'll still be playing Skyrim, Fallout, and GTA.

Man. I quit my job in 2022 due to burnout and video games have been my life. I’ve always played and used to be in a raiding guild in World of Warcraft but now it’s just ridiculous amounts. I still dabble in WoW, but since leaving my job I’ve completed both Horizon games (and NG+), both God of Wars (and NG+), gotten several seasonal Diablo 4 toons to level 100, I’m on my fourth play of the Witcher 3 and I’ve fully completed Baldur’s Gate 3 three times, plus I have several campaigns in various states. I got a Steam Deck this summer for my birthday and it’s a great unit. My husband and I are doing a co-op BG 3 campaign on our Decks and it’s been fun.
We had the Atari 2600 when I was a kid, but of course those games were very pick up and put down. When the NES came along, I got super into Dragon Warrior. Never. Stop. Gaming!
They'll likely find me with either the mouse under my hands and my Sims dying too from lack of supervision, my Cities Skylines animations angrily complaining about overflowing sewage with 90 percent of the population dead and traffic backed up irredeemably, or, with a controller languishing off the side of the table as my hero in Kingdoms Of Amular dies from getting their brow wiped by trolls or wolves, lol.
When I can afford a new (old) PS system Mario and Sonic will be back in play!
BuckyD1000@reddit
Nope. Other than arcade games at restaurants and shit, I never got too into video games. I guess I'm an outlier.
As games evolved and got insanely realistic, I definitely was intrigued, but I intentionally avoided getting a console because I knew I'd turn into a full-blown game addict.
I've tried a few modern ones like Red Dead Redemption, but I'm so clueless about games. They're just so damn complicated now.
akajondoe@reddit
It's harder for me to pick up and stay interested in video games, but yeah, I still play them from time to time. I mostly play RPGs these days.
dragonbliss@reddit

al_heath@reddit
I'm 53 and only play video games on days ending in a Y. One of the great things about being older (and having some disposable income thanks to a decent job!) mean I can splurge on all sorts of peripherals younger me could only dream of. Which is handy as I'm a SIM racer with a very expensive aluminium rig, pedals, gear shifter, direct drive base with multiple wheels and a VR headset connected to a fairly decent PC. Sucks to be Gen X 😆
Beelzebozotime@reddit
I grew up with video games. My parents had one of those early TV pong machines, then we got an Atari 2600 around 1980, then a basic Nintendo system when those came out. I played Carmen Sandiego & Oregon Trail on Apple II's, tried Bard's Tale on our Apple IIgs. Loved Arcades and a quarter still means 'video game' in my head. Even worked in a food & arcade place my last couple years of high school. Played Syndicate, Wolfenstein 3D, & DOOM on a 386 I'd gotten for college. Had a home network set up by an IT roommate of mine and we'd play Command & Conquer, Warcraft II, and Hexen over the network. I've owned a SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, & XBoxes original through XBox One. I would still love to have a MAME cabinet & a virtual Pinball machine.
I fully expect to have a game controller attached to my wheelchair in the retirement home so I can challenge my fellow old-farts to some Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

I'm 56 and will never give up gaming, it's one of the most enjoyable things in life. I started with Pong and the arcade games in the '70s, console gaming throughout the '80s, and PC gaming since the late '90s. I took a break for a few years in the mid-'90s but missed gaming so much it made me sad. Once I got my first PC I was right back to it.
Right now I've just finished Fallout 4 and have begun a nostalgia run through Fallout: New Vegas, using the Viva Las Vegas mod. I don't want to leave the Fallout world for a while.
Ebo_72@reddit
We (52m and 50f) finally relented and allowed our son to play GTA5. He’s 12, and the language isn’t anything he hasn’t heard before. He loves games, and it’s hard to argue that it’s not one of, if not the, best games ever. The violence isn’t as bad as I remembered it. So it got me playing it again. Just started the a new game from the beginning.
Still love the Zelda games. Red Dead Redemption is amazing. No mans sky is literally infinite. Have gotten really into several different Lego titles.
But I don’t play all the time. I seem to get into some game or another in a big way during the winter months. When the days get warmer and longer I start to lose interest. With my ADHD I’ll get into a new game and put a couple hundred hours into it, only to stop at some point and never pick it up again. I’ll play games until I die, but it’s not the main focus of my life.
One of the things about being older and still into gaming is having the financial resources to get what you want. The only reason I don’t have a PS5 yet is because I’m still happy with my PS4, but I can see one in my future. Theres a new switch coming, and I’m sure we’ll snap up a couple of those.
Things I’ve never gotten into: wearing a headset and playing online with a bunch of other people, and VR. My son has a VR and I’ve used it, but it’s not my thing. I’ve said for a long time that VR is the first major tech change that GenX is missing out on. I know very few people in our generation that have really jumped into that. For our 22 yo old daughter that’s like her whole social life, and she’s not unusual for the age group. I can only imagine how much our 12 yo son gets into it. Our (hopefully) grandkids will probably look back on today’s VR like our kids look back on the NES.
jaywright58@reddit

I do but I took a looooong hiatus of about 15 years from my late 20s to mid 40s for various reasons. Then during the pandemic I played Cyberpunk 2077 and was completely blown away by what games have become since then. I literally felt like I got to live in the kind of world I imagined playing tabletop Shadowrun as a teenager (minus the magic). It’s a great diversion especially from work stress, but it can still be a distraction/addiction which gives me some direct perspective on what my gamer kids are dealing with.

I joined "The Older Gamers" in my 20s for WoW and a few other games. You had to be over (21 at the time? 18 now) to join. Their argument wasn't that older people were more mature, certainly there are plenty of mature teens and immature adults; but that 'older' gamers had more in common life experiences. In my raid group there was a retired father and adult son, husbands and wives, etc. If someone said, "My girlfriend just got home, I have to quit the group to bring in groceries" they would get a kind, "Ah, that sucks for us, but catch you next time" rather than harassment. They are still active for many games.

Yep. I'm just finishing up the Xenoblade Chronicles games and (in Future Redeemed now) when I'm just relaxing I'm playing (well, just starting out) Coral Island.
I do find myself going back to cozier games like Rune Factory (4 & 5) and My Time at Sandrock (looking forward to Evershine).
I was in a bad relationship that kinda beat it out of me, got separated in 2013 (moved back home) and it took me almost 10 years to feel comfortable enough to get back into it. I'm just disappointed at what I've missed during that time.

Started back in 1983 with Game&Watch (Snoopy tennis) and never stopped. Now busy with Hellblade 2 on my new Carbon Series S via gamepass.
dcamnc4143@reddit
Yes but no. I only play call of duty mobile with my coworkers in a “clan” (terrible name). I don’t really play anything else currently.
PoopPant73@reddit
I play about 4 hours a day!
Plastic_Bullfrog9029@reddit
Hell yes. I'm 54. I've played all of the GTA iterations, Red Dead Redemption and RDR2, and since Covid play Warzone 3-4 days a week with a 57 yo buddy. I plan on taking a few days off to play GTA VI when its released.
Stay_At_Home_Cat_Dad@reddit
I have a Series X, but I haven't turned it on in a while. I played the hell out of Diablo IV. I've loved the Diablo games since the beginning. I bought Starfield, but was really disappointed with it. I'd really like another Elder Scrolls game.
nothingisover69@reddit
Yes. It’s way better than doom scrolling trying to find something on a streaming service.
cacecil1@reddit
Every day. Baldur's Gate 3 and First Descendant lately.
autogeriatric@reddit
Not much. I have a VR headset and I play very occasionally. Husband occasionally plays Xbox. Pinball was my favoured arcade game.
fattymcfattzz@reddit
Yup still play when I can or when the grip it is online
KrasnyRed5@reddit
My wife and I are playing the Diablo 4 expansion together so yes.
Ezilii@reddit
Yes, why would I stop?
thanx_it_has_pockets@reddit
I play Animal Crossing everyday. I also love Lego video games
aluminumnek@reddit (OP)
My daughter is 27 and loves animal crossing on her Switch. She’s let me try it a few times. It’s a nice relaxing game
Lolobolobar@reddit
I gave my daughter a Switch when she was 27 to get Animal Crossing to play on each other’s Islands. We have fun with it!
thanx_it_has_pockets@reddit
Sometimes it is. ;)
Lolobolobar@reddit
Me too! And Disney Dreamlight Valley.
spicyface@reddit
I game on my PC, my PS5, my Switch, and I have a stand up arcade that has every game from 79 to 94 that I built myself. My arcade also emulates Dreamcast and has Daphne so I can play they old laser disc games like Space Ace and Dragon's Lair.
RufusBanks2023@reddit
Wish I did. No time. Days off are filled with getting caught up in the most basic of errands and catching up on work related items. I work in the broken system that is education.
butterflypup@reddit
Not as much as I’d like to. I’ve been meaning to schedule a gaming day when I refuse to do anything else. Soon. Very soon.
Pointless_Lawndarts@reddit
I just downloaded delta onto my iPad and was playing ‘A Link To The Past’ and ‘Super Metroid’ all night last night.
So, yeah, I am.
I even loaded up Actraiser just to hear that first level jam. Fillmore
copper_state_breaks@reddit
NCAA 25 and Horizon Forbidden West are what I'm playing right now. Kids love the Lego games.
Hemicrusher@reddit
I took an old HP EliteDesk 705 and installed Batocera to emulate old console games on my TV. I have everything from NES, Sega Dreamcast, Saturn, Genesis, PS1, PS2...
SouxsieBanshee@reddit
We had Atari, Atari 400, and Nintendo. We had the little handheld electronic football game. And I think we had a little Pac Man game. My brother was obsessed with video games. His other passion was art. He would spend hours making little flip animations with notepads. My dad used to yell at him saying he needs to get off his video games and spend more time on his studies, he’s never going to be able to get a job as an adult playing video games. My brother is now an art director at Blizzard.
Me personally, I liked playing games but was never really good at it and preferred the simpler games lol
Upstairs-Storm1006@reddit
Do phone games count?
CanineAnaconda@reddit
I took a gamble and bought a Pandora G-box for about $100 online. It doesn’t require an internet hookup and has about 2000 coin-op arcade games from the1970s-1990s, though I mostly play the same 20 games like Donkey Kong, Paperboy and DigDug. It’s heaven.
Never bothered to play newer ones, too many buttons or too much time commitment.
EastYouth1410@reddit
I legit played two thousand hours of Skyrim. I am working on beating that record with Zelda games. I miss the old arcades. We had a seedy one in an old convenient store where I grew up, coolest place in town for a ten year old kid.
zionzednem@reddit
Yep. PS5- Assassins Creeds games right now... Played Red Dead, Fallout, and will be onboard for GTA.
Hairbear2176@reddit
I still play, and because I hate myself, I play a stupid amount of Call of Duty and Destiny 2 PVP. I still like stories in games, but I find myself playing PVP because the matches are short and I don't need to pay attention to any story content I may miss.
KillerSwiller@reddit
Yep, still do. Been playing a game lately called NAEV which is a callback to the old Escape Velocity games of the 90's.
immersemeinnature@reddit
I dove in when my son started playing Bloons on iPad 10 years ago. I decided that was gonna be a way for us to communicate/play together hopefully as long as possible even into his adulthood. It's been great and I'm so glad we did!!
nokillswitch4awesome@reddit
I bought an Xbox Series S just so I can play NCAA football 25. I don't need any other games, but I will wear this one, and future iterations, out like I did every version from NCAA 07 to NCAA 14.
PiperDon@reddit
Yep. I turned 55 in June and play three games pretty regularly. On my own I play Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5, and Rocket League Sideswipe on mobile. About a month or so ago I joined my wife and Stardew Valley and we've pretty much been playing that every night together since.
I've taken breaks from gaming here and there, but it's a pretty regular part of my day at the moment.
Lopsided-Painting752@reddit
I used to be into indie horror games on PC and then sort of petered out. I played Animal Crossing RELIGIOUSLY during the first part of the pandemic. My son got the game and gave me a place on his island but I finally got my own last year. Yet once again, it has petered out and I rarely play this year. I still have a Steam account but just...don't play much.
hippiechick725@reddit
I used to be a master at Mousetrap! (Colecovision)
cv_init_diri@reddit
My adult kid laughs that I still play Age of Empires/Madden/NBA 2K on my PC :-). I have a PS3 but never really bothered to upgrade. Launching games and playing on my PC is much faster.
freshcoastghost@reddit
VR....
gobux1972@reddit
Yep. Almost everyday.
cgund@reddit
I only play match-3 type games on my ipad, plus board games at boardgamearena.com
TheGreatOpoponax@reddit
I still play although not for like 8 hours at a time. I keep it to under two hours.
It's a great and fun way to focus on anything but work and other life issues. Also, I live alone, so it's a good way to pass the time.
aluminumnek@reddit (OP)
Same. Though if it’s a rainy, dreary day and I have not much to do, I’ll have a game day to myself
MaximumJones@reddit
Every single day.
Bushwazi@reddit
Of course
therian_cardia@reddit
Yeah. Not daily, not even weekly but I still whoop ass on SF2.

Yes, many of my friends still do.
TheDreadedMe@reddit
I do, but I am finding myself to be a lot more picky about what I consider a game good enough to waste my time on. That or the games are shit compared to 10-15 years ago.
jessek@reddit
Yeah just not very often and I’m not that good at them. But I never really was when I was younger
big_daug6932@reddit
On occasion. PC games.
Alex_Plode@reddit
My buddy and I game regularly. Helldivers is a favorite right now.
