fellas. How do u learn more about cars?

For me - I learn more by doing. SO while I think "book learning" is an important part of the process, actually getting your hands dirty is SUCH an effective learning tool. For me it literally drives the lessons home and I remember them faster and easier. SO when I'm facing some problem I know nothing about, like my car is doing something I don't like or not doing something it should (like running) then I start to investigate. You have access to the absolute BEST resource for learning the world has ever known in all of history - the internet. It's absolutely a fantastic tool but you have to be able to discern good from bad info. So when I start researching an issue, google is my main source, until I start to figure out what system may be to blame. Once I figure out a system, I'll start researching that more and more and dig deeper and deeper until I feel fairly confident about the cause. I use Haynes manuals and you can get those at any AutoZone or even online. I'll watch YouTube vids on how to change some part or how to diagnose some issue - YouTube is FANTASTIC for research. AND if you're serious about learning, start a brand new google account and log into YouTube with that account. THEN ONLY use that account for car stuff. WHY? Because Google will learn about that user account and start suggesting more and more stuff that's car related. It'll suggest channels for car repairs, mods, all kinds of helpful stuff. Here's one resource many don't even know about, your local public library!! They often have repair manuals for a LARGE number of cars.....and let me assure you, nothing beats a good repair manual for your specific vehicle. I found it helpful to go on my local public library's website, look for databases then search for auto repair database and quickly found what I was looking for which was an electrical schematic diagram for a friends car. It wasn't as complete as others I'd seen in the past, but it was enough that I think we can use it to fix his car. Now if you just want general automotive information like how certain components work, I'd start with YouTube, especially if your money is tight. If you've got a bit of extra cash and want to invest, I'd look at Amazon for textbooks or better yet, go to your local vocational technical school that has an automotive repair class and ask them what textbook they use....then buy that one. Don't try to "boil the ocean" - in other words, don't try to learn absolutely everything about everything all at once cuz there's simply too much to learn. Learning in chunks is the easier way to go. Start with some system that interests you or is needed like say you need a brake job. OK start focusing on how to do that yourself safely and how all the parts fit together, etc. Dive deep into it and when you feel like your ready try it out. When you feel confident about that move on to something else. And don't be afraid to chat up your local autoparts store employees with what you're trying to do. Noone knows everything but if you chat people up about what you're working on, where you're stuck, you'd be surprised at what you can learn.
