Anyone else waking up at 5am (or earlier) every morning regardless of when you went to bed?
Posted by Just-Seaworthiness39@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 431 comments
I’ve always had trouble getting my ass out of bed. It’s been like this since I was a little kid.
My remote job starts at 9am and normally I’m up ten minutes before my first meeting. But the last couple of months, I’ve been waking up around 5am every single day without an alarm regardless of whether I go to bed at 10pm or 1am.
While I would have loved this random superpower in my twenties back when I was a go-getting person at a different stage of life, now I just want to sleep a full eight hours.
Is this an age thing? Anyone else going through this?
Parlava@reddit
This is an older post but WOOOWWW YESS!!! Fucking 4am wide ass awake, and completely unable to go back to sleep. So obnoxious
Meep42@reddit
3 am. Every. Single. Night. This perimenopause crap is crap.
Altered_Priest@reddit
Same for me—but I’m a guy so maybe it‘s age? Already had my hormones tested and they’re normal. But this early waking shit is no fun.
SciHeart@reddit
Taking low dose progesterone really helped me with this. And magnesium. I sleep through the night again most nights. I was up at 2 for 1.5 hours every night for a year before, right as my periods got all super heavy and wacky from progesterone changes.
Meep42@reddit
On both. I’m taking magnesium glycinate, trying to source tartrate in Italy (super hard find), the pharmacist suggested a chelated/glycinate combo that we had to order. My doc really thought the magnesium would get it…but no.
SciHeart@reddit
Ugh. I'm so sorry.
Just-Seaworthiness39@reddit (OP)
I’m sure this is part of my new internal clock. I’ve been having joint pain too. Ahh the joys of being a woman!
MadPiglet42@reddit
Right? I'm sweaty but also cold but also hot, I itch all over, I want to stab things but also give big hugs, I can't remember why I got up to go into the other room, I'm hungry but nothing sounds good, my skin is breaking out so I have zits AND wrinkles, which is just unfair, and everyone needs to leave me the hell alone but now I'm lonely and bored and where'd this belly come from and what the actual fuck is going on here?
godleymama@reddit
Every night I look at myself in the mirror and wonder: when did my grandma get here?!?
Sunshine-warrior@reddit
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha it’s 546aam and I’m laughing so thanks!
godleymama@reddit
Absolutely! Any time!
MadPiglet42@reddit
Lucky you. I see my dad. 🤣🤣
godleymama@reddit
Lol!
Embarrassed-Pepper-5@reddit
My dad, but with my mom’s coloring
Meep42@reddit
Same.
B4USLIPN2@reddit
🎵Every time that I look in the mirror, all these lines on my face getting clearer. The past is gone. It went by like dusk to dawn. Isn’t that the way? Everybody’s got the dues in life to pay, yeah. 🎵
godleymama@reddit
That was my graduating class' song!
B4USLIPN2@reddit
And you are Gen X?? You musta had one hip high school!
godleymama@reddit
We did, but the song was old when we chose it. I graduated in '86.
KismetSarken@reddit
So many hours spent listening to this song high. Good memories.
yardkat1971@reddit
I look in the mirror and go, "MOM?"
Mean_Fae@reddit
Ouch.
poligotplatipus@reddit
That's pretty hilarious, I have to admit
blessing-chocolate32@reddit
Omg, it’s awful. Hormone replacement therapy has helped me immensely. I’m pretty sure it saved my sanity—and marriage. The one thing that bothers me is being hungry but nothing sounds good. Like…wtf is that about??
sonnetshaw@reddit
Are you me? Menopause is dumb
StephDos94@reddit
Yes, menopause is dumb and is the ultimate slap in the face when you’ve had painful periods your whole life. I sweat from places I had no idea you could sweat from, like earlobes!
imhere_4_beer@reddit
OMG the zits and wrinkles!!!! Make it stop!
Ok-Sprinklez@reddit
I'd give anything to be cold!! Never not hot. This year sweating in my eyes has been the new cherry in top
MatchaMuch@reddit
Sweating in my eyes is also a fun thing I experience! I mean… what the actual hell??!
Longjumping-Dress567@reddit
Well said. I feel everything you wrote. 💙
Munchkinpea@reddit
Whenever I try to explain the hot but cold but also hot thing to my husband he thinks I'm nuts. He doesn't understand why I wear shorts and sandals at the same time as jumpers and wrist warmers.
I mentioned it in the office yesterday and all the women knew exactly what I meant.
untactfullyhonest@reddit
Yesss!!!! I’m up now at 5:00 am and have been awake since 2:30-3:00. This is for the birds. Perimenopause can kick rocks. She’s a major B.
McCale@reddit
Do you recognize daylight savings time? If so, is it always 3am for you?
Meep42@reddit
Yes-ish? I don’t really get thrown off by time changes of any sort-daylight savings or even travel related…or didn’t? Maybe I should say that as it’s been a bit since I’ve done a huge shift.
As soon as my body adjusts, which is immediate for daylight savings and usually happens during the flight if I’m traveling, it’s 3am local time. Almost on the dot.
As others have mentioned, maybe it’s due more to only being able to sleep in chunks of time rather than that blissful 7-8 hours straight of my youth?
Tokogogoloshe@reddit
TIL I have perimenopause.
Is that normal for guys?
Laylasita@reddit
You might have low testosterone.
chamrockblarneystone@reddit
This is going to sound like a sales pitch, it’s not. I don’t give a damn what you buy. Here’s the short version. I turned 50 and was 6”2” 260 lbs. I thought I was just stuck there. Id drop 5 or 10 lbs and put it right back on
Im 57 now. In March I had a heart attack. Two stents made me feel a lot better and there was no real damage. Dr said lose 60 lbs. I said holy shit.
Im a teacher and all the women around me were quiely using Zepbound and Wegovy. I said whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Ive dropped 50 lbs since I started Zepbound. I feel so much better. I go to the gym. I surf. Anyway that weight you’ve gotten comfortable with is killing you. Find out what your real BMI number is and get there. It will sound nuts, but youll feel so much better. Zepbound is easy and it works.

I guess I can get it checked when I do my next annual checkup. Strangely it's only in the city that I'm like that. On the farm I sleep fine.
AlmondCigar@reddit
Might be you feel safe and more relaxed on the farm? Subconsciously.
Tokogogoloshe@reddit
Definitely more relaxed. And more active during the day.
schmearcampain@reddit
Andropause is a thing too.
Trix_Are_4_90Kids@reddit
It's not just perimenopause. After menopause, your sleep won't be the same. 🤷🏾♀️ It happens when you age. Some nights you won't sleep at all for no fecking reason.
cocokronen@reddit
Yea, I am 1 am to 4 am.
OhSoSoft@reddit
Between 3-4am almost every night, but also more restless, hot/cold, thirsty, great now I gotta go to the bathroom, some nights restless leg is really awful too so then I give up & go have a bath after I pace the house a bit.
ProfCatWhisperer@reddit
100% this ⤴️ Add nightsweats and morning brain fog, and it's my life.
SWGardener@reddit
Another 3 am checking in! I work remote so sometimes I get up have coffee and start work at 4 am.

fattymcfattzz@reddit
Well I’ve never been able to sleep long periods of time since I was a kid
TheSunscreenQueen@reddit
Same here. Even if I take sleep medication. It’s horrible.
Poutiest_Penguin@reddit
I was waking up at 3am also. It wasn't peri. I fought it for years and felt like crap all the time, but now I take a half an Ambien every night and it's changed my life.

FatFuckinPieceOfShit@reddit
I sleep 5 hours now. If I go to bed at 9, I'm up at 2.
sarahoutx@reddit
3 am here too. Peri sucks.
arieljagr@reddit
Exactly. I am like a 3 am alarm clock now. I haven’t slept 8 hours straight for years.
amhertz@reddit
Yep. The witching hour
CloseTTEdge@reddit
6am for me. I’ve been doing this for about the last 10 years. Occasionally will sleep a little late or wake up earlier and snooze on the downstairs couch but pretty consistently 6am.
It helps to have a household of dogs and cats who demand breakfast on a schedule.
Electrical_Spell_405@reddit
Every day by 4:30am, no matter what time I go to bed since I was a little kid!
Complete-Twist150@reddit
Between 4 and 4:30 for me. Been like that for 3 years. Started going to the gym...now I'm ripped. Like really, I figured rather than just laying there I'd go to the gym. Honestly, one of the best things that's ever happened to me.
Kidfacekicker@reddit
3am every morning. Get to bed 8pm or 2am. I'll be awake at 3. Strangely, this seems to be pretty common amongst those of us in our 40s or about that. I personally keep trying to remember the "owl" (if you have the reference, shout out)
Creepy_Society5958@reddit
Yep, and I take sleep meds. It makes my days sooooo long, and I just had knee replacement so it’s extra fun🥴
muffdiver5643@reddit
yaap! but it'll soon change to 4 because of the stupid time change
QfromP@reddit
yup. you're getting old.

Agitated_Age8035@reddit
I do, but I get up at 4 am every weekday for work, so my body just kicks me up at that time.
sarahburdge@reddit
Yup
yowza_wowza@reddit
6:30ish for me. Here I am on Saturday morning browsing Reddit because my brain woke me up at 6:30 on my day off. My dad woke up at 3:30 every morning growing up. I guess it’s just a natural part of aging.
Ok-Weather-7332@reddit
Yep. 5 hours no matter when I start
Old_Common2769@reddit

Ughhh...0200 to pee then wake up around 0330. "Sleeping in" for me is 0430🤦🏻♂️ Doesn't matter if I go to sleep at 2100 or midnight ..it's so irritating sometimes
ButtersStochChaos@reddit
It is 11:52pm as I read/ write this. My alarm will go off at 3:30am. I have to be at work before 5:00am. 60 year old male.
WonderfulPair5770@reddit
It's 7, but YES.
Mikethemechanic00@reddit
Am 49 with 11 year olds. Go to bed 9pm up by 5am. Before kids I would stay up till 11pm. Have not stayed up late since my teens and 20s. I get 7 plus hours of sleep a night. I need it..
alf8765@reddit
5am is sleeping in for me. I usually wake up and get up every night around 0230...ugh
HarlandKing@reddit
Yes. Only because I have a 19.5 yo cat who starts crying for breakfast about 4:50 a.m.
Lostarchitorture@reddit
I am these days. I use the morning time now to go workout at the gym when it opens at 530. 6 months so far and haven't had to use my alarm once.
It has felt weird just finding myself suddenly awake at 5 for no reason I can think of. But if I'm up, might as well make the most of it!
dbrmn73@reddit
I'm up everyday between 430 and 5 no matter the time I go to sleep. Also haven't used an alarm in decades.
Just-Seaworthiness39@reddit (OP)
It’s driving me bonkers, but not using an alarm sounds nice.

1984isAMidlifeCrisis@reddit
I've woken up before 5 almost every morning of my life regardless of schedule or alarms. Unless I go to bed after 2, I will be up by 5.
If I set an alarm, I will always wake about 10 minutes before it goes off. I have never heard the alarm on the last three clocks or devices I've owned. I take it on faith that they work and would wake me. I have no idea.
It's not a superpower. It's probably just a symptom of anxiety.
Both-Ad1801@reddit
Same here - any time between 2 am and 5 am. And if I'm up, the dogs are up and I'm just trying to keep everyone quiet.
FYIgfhjhgfggh@reddit
Same. It was just CPTSD all along.
MooPig48@reddit
I slept through till my 7am alarm the other day. I literally can’t remember the last time that happened but pretty sure no joke that it’s been a couple decades. To say I was shocked is an understatement. I’m usually up a good hour and a half prior
Beautiful-Thinker@reddit
My husband sets an alarm for 5:00. I get up sometime between 530 and 6:00, because my subconscious feels aware of him up and moving around. But when I told him that I never hear his alarm go off, he said “that’s because it never does. I always wake up a couple minutes before and shut it off before it makes a sound.”
It’s neurosis or chivalry. Maybe both. But I’ll take it….😝
djrosen99@reddit
I get to the office about 5:45am everyday because I cant sleep. I don't use an alarm, well, I do but I always wake up before it goes off. Tonight was unusually bad, I got caught up watching something on TV and didn't get into bed until 11, I try to have my head down by 10:30 because it takes me about an hour to fall asleep. I was up at 3:30, alarm is set for 4:50 so I just got up. It sucks. I remember as a teen sleeping until 1 in the afternoon after a solid night of partying.
djaybe@reddit
Yep. I blame it on my kids. Been getting up before 5a for a few decades. It has become my favorite part of the day ☺️
Substantial_Cry_999@reddit

CowboyLaw@reddit
I get mine at either 4:00 or 6:15. Both like on the button. 4:00, I pee, go back to bed, fall right asleep. 6:15, I just snooze until it’s time to get up. Hey, at least I don’t have any prostrate issues!

vwibrasivat@reddit
Change what you drink and eat before bed. You have the power.
ajcpullcom@reddit
I do not eat or drink anything for at least three hours before bed. No effect. I’m a 51-year-old man and prostates have no remorse.
bulbishNYC@reddit
Once at 5 am is not too bad, I have to get up at 2am and then around 5 again.

kipy7@reddit
My bladder just started doing that this year. I tried peeing just before going to bed, it didn't help. Ugh.
OldBanjoFrog@reddit
Mine is 6:45am, but I am not a morning person. It sucks
Advanced-Prototype@reddit
I don’t drink anything two hours before going to sleep. That’s helped me.
3_dots@reddit
LOL. Luckily mine alerts me at about 2, then I'm able to go back to sleep for a bit. You might want to try loading up earlier in the night so it wakes you up earlier. Or hold liquids past a certain time and see if you can sleep in.
FlyParty30@reddit
Ugh! Tell me about it. My circadians are so screwed up.
newtoboston2019@reddit
Yes! I was always a night owl and could easily sleep until 10 am or later. Since I turned 50, I'm up everyday around 5 am no matter what... no alarm needed. It's weird, but I love it. Nothing better than sipping coffee and sitting with my thoughts while the rest of the world is asleep.
JacqieOMG@reddit
I seem to regularly sleep only 3-5 hours a night now. Those hours are all over the place though, not at consistent. Up late due to stress and anxiety over ugly custody / legal stuff. Up early with the kids no matter what. I think I’m still functional actually because I’m old and don’t need as much sleep. I couldn’t handle this when I was younger. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not I had kids on the older side (48yo).
Moist_Rule9623@reddit
Funny because yeah; mine is a little offset because I work a B shift (2pm start), and yet I wake up at like 7-8am every day.
What I love about it is, I generally get up, use the head and maybe do something like some laundry and then I go back to bed, and during that next couple hours I have THE MOST WILD DREAMS. Borderline lucid dreaming and extremely vivid

It’s 4am and I’m going to sleep with the alarm set for 8am. I hope to be with you early birds one day.
PalatialCheddar@reddit
Night owls for the (ass-dragging in the morning) win!
Tackybabe@reddit
I’m going through something similar but different. I have always been a night owl. Up until 1am or so on a work night. The past little while, I’m getting sleepy at 8pm! It’s dark here at 8pm, but on the weekends, too, and I try to fight it on the weekends. I saw a little SNL last weekend, but I’m in bed like a nine year old now. I’m sure it’s my perimenopause. It’s screwing everything up.
I remember something from The Big Bang Theory that was funny: I guess it was Sheldon that went to see the Bob Newhart character (rest in peace - what a legend) and it was night time, so Newhart opens the door and he says, “in a few hours, I need to get up and walk around the house” or something like that… I thought it was so funny… so that’s what we have to look forward to… aimlessly waking up with nothing to do!
PalatialCheddar@reddit
I'm still living the night owl life, but now that I have a Grown Up™ day job it's rough.
The awesome news is that I'm usually still awake when a lot of folks are waking up, so I can still join the party!

I will occasionally wake up in the morning all sweaty but I’m just starting perimenopause at 51. Thanks Mom! 🖕🏻

I "made the mistake" of going to Europe for two weeks. I was getting up at 3:30 but it's improved somewhat to 4:30 and then 5:30. Still like wtf, can I at least sleep until my alarm at 7:15?

That happened to me for a few years in my late 40’s (just a few years ago), but now I’m so damn tired all the time that I pass out immediately and sleep too long (IMO). AND I still end up taking naps, which I hate. I think I would prefer a middle of the road.

Constantly. Sometimes 2, 3 or 4, which really sucks because my alarm is set for 5:30 so I can give my cat his food and insulin. Sometimes I couldn't fall asleep until 1 or 2 a.m. Then back yo bed until I have to clock into my WFH job at 7 a.m. This constant interruption to my sleep is killing me. I'm like a zombie on the days I didn't get a good 5-6 hours of sleep.

I am 58 and still work, and my alarm is set for 4:45 AM. I’m routinely up between 330 and 430 every morning. I suspect it’ll be that way once I retire next year. I don’t mind, as it’s quiet, and unlike evenings, I feel more wide awake. It’s a good time to catch up on shows and on the news. I figure I get between 4 to 6 hours of sleep at night. I find it difficult to grab more than six hours sleep.

No, on the contrary I hate waking up at the sound of the alarm clock at 7am: I'd sleep until 10 every day, not just on weekends. My father is almost 80 and he's the same.

I was having this problem until very recently. What allowed me to sleep in was talking an allergy pill at night, and it isn't the kind with a sleep aid. I think my sinuses were causing me to sleep terribly.

I also sleep better, if not longer, when I take my allergy meds before bed.
ColdHandGee@reddit
I also take an antihistamine tablet every night before bed. My nose is sensitive, and it runs constantly, and that has been affecting my sleep pattern.
I use a galaxy watch 7 to measure my sleep pattern. I sleep roughly for 4 hours a night, yet I never feel tired in the day.

Yes, up at 5:00. Out at 5:15am for morning walk. Might as well be productive.

My nose is out of joint over the loss of my night owl super power. It used to be the time when my writing skill was at its sharpest. Now my last two novels, the last in two respective series, sit waiting for me to finish them - post COVID-fog and post-menopause.
Some days I wake at 3 am and can't get back to sleep, some days it's 5 am. Which of course means that at night, I'm exhausted by no later than 11 pm. Which means no night owl writing UNTIL 3 am.
This timeline sucks.

THIS.
When you're in a forest and it starts to get really dark, it's like it's shouting from the rooftops that you need to wind it down and get ready for bed.
I really think human beings were designed to get up with the sunrise and go to sleep not too long after nightfall. Everything else we do isn't how we were designed.

Yes. I don't have set hours for my remote job, and all my coworkers are on the west coast 3 hrs behind me. My watch alarm is set for 6:30a for the odd day when I'm able to go back to sleep. However, it's usually just easier to get up and eat breakfast and take a nap later in the day.

Thriving9@reddit
Since I can remember I have always risen around 5 am regardless. I did have a brief period maybe 6 months where I was able to sleep in till 7-8am and it seemed to me this was due to me eating more food later into the night. As I gained about 10-15lb during that time. Typically I have liquid breakfast, liquid lunch and a decent dinner around 5-6pm.
Not sure if it's relevant but I very very rarely have dreams.

Been happening to me (51M) for the last year or so. I'm routinely waking up an hour or so before my alarm and can't fall back asleep. I usually do not get out of bed because it feels good to just relax but it's frustrating to lose quality sleep time. Nothing with my routine/lifestyle has changed, so I chalk it up to aging. Sometimes, I do feel it later in the day and I'm incapable of napping.

5 am, or 4 am when the time changes. No matter when I go to bed. If I roll over and try to go back to sleep I am plagued with freaky dreams. Been like this for ten yrs at least (I am 54), I think menopause is the culprit, but as that is the only effect I am afflicted with I will not complain.

Ever since I was little my sleep schedule has been up at between 5 or 6am and to sleep anywhere between 11pm to 1-3am.
Now my bed time has moved up a bit (10:30pm-1am), but my wake up time is the same. Unless I’m traveling or on vacation, then it’s usually earlier to bed.

It is an age thing; my aunt warned me about it.
I don’t know if it’s b/c your body is running low on the “sleep hormone” or what, it I haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep in ages, and I don’t sleep as deeply or as heavily as I used to, or wake up feeling better and “refreshed.”
And it isn’t just perimenopause or menopause b/c I see it happens to men in my life around my age as well.
I don’t know what causes it precisely but it’s one of those weird symptoms of aging no one really tells you about, except in my case, my thoughtful aunt when she reached her 70s.

Oh yes. In my younger years I struggled to get up. In the winter in college there were times I didn't get up in time to see the sun. For me its mental reasons I can't fall back asleep. I try to solve all my problems and my mind cant settle down to sleep again. I blame the my usage of reddit and the internet. "Don't have time to finish reading the title I have scroll to the next title!" My ability to focus my attention is wrecked and I had the brain of a person who would read a 600 page book in a weekend.
A Doxepin 10mg prescription helps. Its an antidepressent at like 100+mg but at low doses it mellows your thinking just slightly. The Calm app and meditation helps to retrain my brain to not try to block out and stop thinking, but focus my thinking on something repetitive and boring like breathing (aka the counting sheep or count backwards method of distracting your brain). Meditating before bed seems to help the most as when I wake up, my mind picks up where it left off so if it was calm I fall back asleep.
I also only try to get back to sleep for 15 minutes then get out of bed and sit in a chair in the other room. Current research believes that if we sit in bed not sleeping, this becomes the expected norm for our bodies.
I was getting 4 hours of sleep consistently due to stress, anxiety, and an inability to just stop thinking. I'm back up to 6 but I'd like to get 8.

3am. Spent 22 yrs in the USAF. Retired in '15 and still can't sleep in. I do get to take a 30 min to 1 hr nap around 1 pm though 😁
laughitup2@reddit
The only thing that has helped me is eye shades AND ear plugs. I tend to wake up less in the middle of the night if I use both.
ServiceKooky1323@reddit
Yep
Karfedix_of_Pain@reddit
Not yet?
My wake-up time is pretty consistently at about 6am. Even on the weekend. Even if I don't set an alarm. I'm usually at least popping my eyes open long enough to realize I don't have to get up.
Vandilbg@reddit
I have furry alarm clocks. German shepherd is going to remind you it's breakfast time no matter how late you stayed up.
CeruleanSky73@reddit
I just woke up at 4:40 am.
Necrospire@reddit
Good morning 🙃🖖
TJ_Fox@reddit
I get six solid hours sleep regardless of when I go to bed, but yeah, that generally means waking up at 5.00 a.m. I'm fortunate to be able to catch up later in the day (and apparently this kind of "polyphasic sleep" is not uncommon), because I'm basically useless without at least seven and preferably eight hours sleep out of 24.
Necrospire@reddit
Sleep for three hours, four if I'm lucky, I'm better than when I was younger back then two hours was the average.
EuphoricPop3232@reddit
I usually wake up from around 3-4 am and then go back to sleep. No matter what time I go to bed. I hate it!

4am every day. I battled with what I thought was insomnia forever and then just started going to bed at 8pm. Problem solved.
PoopPant73@reddit
I go to sleep at 8:30-9pm and I’m wide awake at midnight. I get on up and start my day. I’ve never slept more than 4 hours unless I’m sick.
AlternativeNumber2@reddit
Every morning yes, my body doesn’t know how to sleep in anymore
PPP_illusion@reddit
My alarm is set for 5am, need to be at work at 6am…but I can count the number of times it has gotten me up on one hand this year. Almost without fail I’m up around 4am. Which is annoying there’s nothing to do at that time, and not enough time to go back to sleep.
Daylight savings has just started this week, and I thought, this will be it! 4am is now the new 5am my body won’t know. But nope…twice so far, 4am again on the clock.
blackpony04@reddit
I've had to awake in the 5AM hour for 30 years and I can safely say the alarm has woke me up at most 20 times in all those years. It's like my body knows it's time to get up, whether I like it or not. Which sucks on the weekends and especially now as I can sleep in until 630 if I wanted as I work remote since last year. Nope, 515 it is.
Upstairs-Storm1006@reddit
Where are you that daylight savings time just started?

5:15 or so. If you give me a couple of weeks off of work, it will slowly adjust, but as due course...every single day.

4am pee time!
blackpony04@reddit
I've been getting up in the 5 o'clock hour for 30+ years, until last year when I was promoted and went remote with the same 7AM start. I now can wake up at 6AM and would be so grateful to have that extra hour of sleep.
What time do I actually wake up? 515. Like FFS body, do you hate me or something? I'm giving you the gift of extra energy here, and you're just pissing it away!
I admittedly can sleep in on the weekends, but I always briefly wake up at 5-something and then go back to sleep. It's weird as my body is so trained that during the work week I am wide ass awake at 515 but not as awake on the weekends.
Still, I totally now understand why my parents and grandparents were up and active by 7AM.
P10pablo@reddit
I wake up at 3am every morning. There is a 50% chance I get back to sleep before I need to be awake.
I've tried timing it for years. What if I go to bed at midnight instead of nine? It mostly doesn't seem to matter.
I knew old folks who woke really early every day, said it just came on them. And I have read a lot about the wakeful hours of older people. I think I'm that person.
You can try microdosing with Benadryl, I've had good luck with that-at least for a few months, same with CBD or the lite products, they might nudge you to stay asleep. I think the trick with any over the counting dosing scheme is that you have learn how to take it awhile, ween off of it and then pick it back up again when you need it.
Last thing is an evening workout ups my chances of getting back to sleep.
wootr68@reddit
Not sure your age, but I’m 56 and it’s unusual for me to sleep past 5 - 5:30. I go to bed around 10-10:30
I also had a span of time in my late 40s where id get up around 3 and have to go out and watch tv and try and get back to sleep.
Miss the days when I could sleep as long as I could or wanted to
feeb75@reddit
Yep 4 am need to pee
digdugnate@reddit
I'm not much help since I've always been an early riser.
I will say that when i hit my mid-40s the time I woke up did go back from 5am to 3:30am to 4:30am regardless of what time I go to bed. Maybe there's something to it! lol
Actual-Vehicle-2358@reddit
I had this, for years I would wake up at 4am and be unable to get back to sleep, even though I was exhausted. I then learned about how caffeine affects the brain by binding to adenosine receptors. I then quit caffeine and sleep like a teenager again. I think years and years of having caffeine had smashed my adenosine receptors, hence the poor sleep and when I quit it, sleep became much much better.
mikey_ramone@reddit
Alarm set for 5:01, I’m usually waiting for it to go off. Get a good workout in before work. Great in the summer when it is already light out, now, no so much.
dfjdejulio@reddit
Since my cancer treatments have started, I seem to keep waking up between 3:30am and 5:30am every day. It's hellish.
(Part of this is, my cancer treatments have jump-started menopause in me, even though I'm a dude. ADT for prostate cancer is … something else.)
Iowadream74@reddit
About that because I have an alarm clock dog. He thinks he needs to eat 5 and we feed them at 6-6:15. He drives me crazy!!! 🤣
Useful-Philosophy408@reddit

Skay1974@reddit
I have to pee now. I can’t just hold it until morning.
ratsta@reddit
Sadly not, I have to work at it! I was out of work for seven years and was in and out of bed whenever tired or bored because I had no external pressures to keep a schedule. I started a new job in Jan last year and it was tough to get up in time regularly.
Then I said fuck it, this has to change. A friend of mine has a long commute and is up at 5:30 and goes to bed at 9. I started forcing myself to get up at 6 and go for a walk. It started as just around the block, all of 10 mins tops but is now "into town and back" which takes about 30 mins. It's almost as if what everyone's been telling me for 30 years has some degree of truth. I'm finding it easy to get up and much easier to get to sleep. Used to take hours, now takes 20 mins.
I do get up to pee around 3am but that's likely because I'm still hooked on fizzy drinks.

CrouchingGinger@reddit
Oh yeah, covered in night sweats too. My job starts at the butt crack of dawn but even on the weekends I’m up at 0330 regardless. The good thing is that I’m out by the time most people go to lunch but it would be nice to get a restful sleep. Now we know why our grandparents got up early, it’s tied to the aging process but also due to that I can’t recall what physiological mechanism that was.
chinsoddrum@reddit
2-3 am and then my wife rolls around the bed from 4-5 am instead of getting up to pee, then finally gets up, slams the bathroom door and pisses like a racehorse and bumps around the bathroom for 10 minutes. Alarm goes off at 6. At least 2-3 nights a week, I get up at 3 and never get back to sleep.

I go to bed by 2200 and get up at 0500 and hit the gym. Although lately I’ve been waking up before 0500 on my own. It’s frustrating because I’ll then look at the time and it’s too early to get up, but also too late to try and go back to sleep.
