How long will my 5800x3d last me? AM4 planning on staying AM4 as long as possible.

I plan to just upgrade my GPU every now and then on my PC, mainly play 1080p and titles like Monster hunter, Path of Exile, Ark Survival Ascended
My GPU by the way is RTX 4060
Menjac123@reddit
Watch Hardware Unboxed newest video, 5800X3D outperforms the newest Ryzen 7 9700X. It's 1080Ti of CPU's.
I'm glad I made the choise to buy this CPU 2 years ago and I'm not changing it till AM6.
jhaluska@reddit
It didn't outperform it except in a few games. On average it was 6% slower in the games they tested.
Merrick222@reddit
6% slower, against a CPU that’s 2 generations ahead of it, it lost in some games…
6% is not perceivable in a game.
cokaznrebel@reddit
Yeah but Ryzen 9000 series is 9000 times faster than intels newest offerings, plus it's quantum and supports time travel. If you don't want any of those by all means - 5000 series it is.
mugen_x@reddit (OP)
Would you say, is moving on to another cpu generation very costly? Haven't really experienced it yet
jhaluska@reddit
There's a significant price jump when you have to also buy a motherboard and ram to upgrade. This is why a lot of people get stuck on the previous socket till there is enough of a performance jump to justify the upgrade.
If you have a 5800x3D, even if it was $300, is about $200 cheaper than a 9700x + motherboard + 32 gb ram which is only a little bit faster.
Menjac123@reddit
Well yes(depending on your budget). B650 mobos are still highly priced and the 7800X3D price went up in the last two months.
5800X3D is good enough even for 1080p. If it can beat the 9700X in gaming on previous gen platform with a DDR4 RAM, then It's good enough to last till AM6.
For me personally, I wouldn't change it still as my PC runs everything at max 1080p.
I have friends that use the 5800X3D paired with the 4090 at 4k and it's solid without any bottleneck(of course at 4k).
Stargate_1@reddit
Highly priced? You can get a B650 for less than 150 Euros easily
szczszqweqwe@reddit
It will last as long as you accept it's performance, anyway, high chances that you will replace GPU once or twice before you even think about CPU.
I'm pretty sure my 5700x3d will be fine until am6 release.
Salviati_Returns@reddit
I think definitely for 1080p gaming and maybe even 1440p gaming that the 5700x3d will be more than adequate well into the mid lifecycle of AM6 which is around 2030. My only worry is that developers get lazy about optimizing their games because they rely on frame generation.
szczszqweqwe@reddit
Lazy devs is a bit of a myth, games just get heavier, more and more things require physics calculations, however graphics is pretty good for years, so changes are less visible than they used to be.
As far as we know it, am6 can launch in 2025, AMD promised 2027 support for am5 and they claim that they still support am4. Personally I would bet on am6 launching in 2026.
It's the other way with resolution, CPU matters less at 4k than 1080p.
Lost_Cyborg@reddit
its not a myth, there were plenty badly opimized triple A games released in the last 3 years. Digital Foundy has a TON of videos calling them out.
watchitforthecat@reddit
It's not "lazy devs" it's brutal corporations.
Groundhog_Gary28@reddit
Can confirm I play in 4K max settings on a 4080 and my cpu utilization is only ever like 40% while I’m playing lol if that
Ritchos@reddit
yeah but that %40 is only the cores being used, if you look at all your cores while gaming 4 out of 8 will be at %100 while the others arent being used. the cpu util is a very misleading stat.
Groundhog_Gary28@reddit
If half the cores are being used and half aren’t that’s still only 50% total cpu utilization so I don’t really get how it’s misleading
szczszqweqwe@reddit
On devs I don't really agree, it's often higherups who push too ambitious projects for a too small budget or too quick release date, often both.
doug1349@reddit
People get this backwards constantly. Lower resolution = higher CPU workload. When the GPU has a less detailed image, it can render more frames of that image. More frames of that image = more draw calls. More draw calls= bigger CPU load.
majds1@reddit
Why do you mention resolution as if it matters? CPU performance isn't affected by resolution, and it's more likely to bottleneck at lower res because it's lighter on the GPU, which means if it's definitely gonna be good for 1080p until am6, it'll definitely be good and even better for 1440p and 4k.
Intranetusa@reddit
Higher resolution invreases the chances of being bottlenecked by the GPU - you are correct on that. However, higher resolution does still place additional strain on the CPU, but the strain is so little compared to the bigger strain on the GPU that most people will be GPU bottlenecked the vast majority of the time.
I've o ly seen this in experimental testing/benchmarks on Techpowerup or Techspot. You'd have to get a very badly mismatched combo in real life for this to happen like a lower end $200 CPU with a high end $1000 GPU.
AtitanReddit@reddit
Stop spreading BS. CPUs are strained at lower res due to higher fps which need faster calculations for the physics and game logic.
It's why at 1080p, a 4070 could match a 4090. No CPU on the market can truly run a 4090 at its true power in 1080p resolution before hitting a wall in physics and logic calculations.
Intranetusa@reddit
You are the one who is spreading BS. CPUs are still strained at higher resolution more than lower resolution, not the other way around as you claim. You're confusing getting lower fps with doing less work, which is untrue. With higher resolution that results in lower fps, both CPU and GPU are working harder to get that result.
GPUs just get strained much more at higher resolution so you hit a GPU bottleneck long before CPU bottleneck.
That is why benchmarks show that a weak CPU with an insanely overpowered GPU still gets lower FPS in higher resolution than in lower resolution.
Look at Techpowerup's cpu benchmarks with a RTX4090 graphics card in the test system.
A 5800X3D gets 117.7 FPS in Spiderman Remastered at 2560x1440p, but gets higher frame rates with 122.7 fps in the same game at 1280x720p. The CPU here is the bottleneck because the 7800X3D gets way more fps with the same 4090 GPU.
That means when you are playing a game with zero GPU bottleneck by using a RTX 4090, you will still get LOWER fps due to higher CPU useage at higher resolutions compared to lower resolutions.

CPU performance is directly affected by resolution. Higher resolution = less draw calls. Less draw calls = less CPU workload. Lower resolution = more draw calls. More draw calls = higher CPU workload.
It’s literally directly related, and they complete opposite of your statement.
majds1@reddit
The difference in CPU performance at higher resolutions is not significant, while the difference in GPU performance at higher resolutions is very big.
So it doesn't matter if at 1080p the cpu performs very slightly better, the difference maker at higher resolutions will be the gpu.
OGigachaod@reddit
Yep, you'll want to upgrade cpu more often if you stick with 1080p
Bitsand@reddit
Reminds me of the time people said i7 4790 could be used forever for 1080p. And yet it was struggling to play the latest games. But I guess I held on to it for 8 years guess it was worth it. Hope the r7 5800x3d or 5700x3d would last similar to that. I only game on 1080p since going bigger than 24' is overwhelming for me.
gaslighterhavoc@reddit
Games did advance quite a bit in multi threading and other tech in those 8 years. Four cores would have struggled no matter what. Yet I don't see a game using more than 8 cores anytime soon in a real way for different technical reasons.
Now you have 4 additional cores, you probably have a LOT more RAM, and you have a hefty 96 MB of L3 cache. That's a freaking additional 88 MB of L3 cache vs what the 4790 offered you (8 MB of L3).
So you have double the cores, hopefully double the RAM (or more!), and 10 times the L3 cache.
I doubt you will see a CPU with 16 cores, double the RAM again, and another 10X L3 cache increase in 8 years.
TLDR = The 5800X3D will age better over 8 years compared to the 4790.
Salviati_Returns@reddit
I was thinking around 8 years too. I also think that we are hitting limits of graphically intensive games as you point to in saying that you really don’t have a desire to game at resolutions higher than 1080p. I don’t see much value in it either. For instance I don’t really think that I can tell the difference with playing Elden Ring at 1440p vs 1080p.
Kiriima@reddit
Actually the higher the resolution the longer cpu stays relevant. Or not relevant, just leas of a bottleneck.
Salviati_Returns@reddit
Could you expand on that a bit. I am not sure what you mean.
LOSTandCONFUSEDinMAY@reddit
Higher resolution and graphics settings shift the workload to be more GPU heavy so it's less likely you'll be limited by your CPU because you hit a GPU limit first.
iAmmar9@reddit
upgraded my 2700x to a 5700x3d. still on my 1080ti
DanielPlainview943@reddit
100% agree. I expect my 5700x3D to be a competitive and competent CPU for at least 4 years .
gaslighterhavoc@reddit
I agree as well. Zen 4 was a mild upgrade at the cost of higher power usage and heat. Zen 5 was called completely disappointing.
Nothing will make your CPU outdated until at least Zen 6 but more likely Zen 7, knowing how AMD loves to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
4 years from now sound about right.
DanielPlainview943@reddit
Ya. Another reason I say this is because before I had the 5700X3D I had a vanilla 3600, which is now 5 years old and it was still performing excellent. I just wanted the 5700X3D because I think the tech is so cool.
RandomAndyWasTaken@reddit
Yeah, I'm waiting to see the 5090 tested to see if my PSU has the ports and power and then probably get that myself. Unfortunately I have a 5950x and I don't want to spend extra on a 5800x3rd when next year the 9900x3rd will come. Although I'll probably hold off until the 10th gen. I'm overall pretty happy with my 3090 5950x fornow
InsertFloppy11@reddit
Am6 is not known when to release yet, right? Guessing next year? Or maybe after?

this is something you can you can easily figure out yourself. keep using the 5800X3D until the level of performance is no longer satisfactory, then you will know how long the CPU lasted.
Similar_Vacation6146@reddit
This is like trying to figure out how far you can drive by going until the tank is empty.
TheSilentCheese@reddit
Nah, more like running an engine and keeping it properly maintained until something in the car breaks that more expensive than a replacement car would be. CPUs are engines, not gas tanks.
Similar_Vacation6146@reddit
Nah
SoSaysCory@reddit
No it's not, plenty of parts last much longer than people say. I'm finally about to upgrade from a very tired but true i5 7500k, straight up 7 years of great gaming, and it finally started to show its age last year, at least to me, everyone play a lot of AAA titles.
TheSilentCheese@reddit
And by then the price to performance ratio for a viable upgrade will almost certainly be better than it is now. Simply run it until an upgrade is needed.
shiddabrik@reddit
I have been using a 5900x for a little over a year now. It's almost too good of a CPU. Don't think I'll be upgrading it for a good bit.

Dante_Unchained@reddit
Yeah or until some new graphic card feature becomes mandatory (lets say dx13.5 or whatever) for game to perform optimally and your card will began to be obsolete, maybe not by performance but by features.
Its funny how alan wake 2 did not run on my rx580, but blackmyth: wukong had no problems running in pretty ok fps on low/mid setting. Fu epic.
Jakunobi@reddit
Huh, really? What couldn't the 580 handle? Ram or other shaders and tech?
Dante_Unchained@reddit
I honestly do not know whats the issue, or if there was a workaround which made it somehow playable. Official info was RX500 series (and older) is not supported, it runs up to 5-10 FPS, stutters like crazy. And the funniest thing is, there was almost no difference in FPS between 1080p lowest and 1080p high settings. Nvidia 16xx runs well, i feel like this was business decision to force upgrade for RX580 owners is still pretty decent card (or at least was when AW2 released) and lot of people still have RX570/580.

StrongTxWoman@reddit
So true. I was using Ryzen 3800X and played games with ultra wide resolution. I was fine until I was GPU bounded.
It really depends on the person. Some games (not all) benefit greatly from bigger cache and faster ram. Most p people don't care that increase of 10 FPS unless the baseline is very bad.
doug1349@reddit
It’s not the upper end that makes X3D magic, it’s the lower. Worst case scenarios when the FPS drops, X3D drops way less fps.

I upgraded a 4670k to the 4790k and had another few years. Upgrades to a 12600k not long ago, which I regret as I intended to upgrade again to an i7 like I did before, but the 14700k is a bit disappointing compared to AMD 's offers.
Intranetusa@reddit
Same here. I have a 5700X3D in my main system and a i7 4790k in my HTPC. My i7-4790k paired with an RX6600 can play new/newish AAA games like Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remake, Resident Evil Village/8, Doom Eternal, Control, etc. at 1080p at mostly high settings and get 60+ fps. It can even play the newest [poorly optimized] Silent Hill 2 remake that came out earlier this week at ~60 fps at 1080p with a mix of high/medium settings, and the cpu useage is often at 50-60% of the time while GPU useage is at 99% so it is mostly a GPU bound game.
Most games today, including triple A games today, are not very cpu intensive and the cpu intensive games often can often still be played by old cpus (even 10 year old cpus if they were on the higher end) if you lower the settings.
SuperDuperCoolDude@reddit
Yeah, I was rocking my 4790k until spring of 23 and it was still working fine with a 3060 Ti (which had replaced my 970). I wanted to do a big upgrade after finishing up my return to school and starting a new career, plus I was able to pass my 3060 Ti to my oldest. Otherwise I could have continued with it for a while.
I actually bought a 5800x3d (as the 7800x3ds were having that over heating issue and some ram stability issues at the time) and I am planning to use it a good long while.
bonditich@reddit
Your cpu is great, you can keep it as for know.
Hungry_Reception_724@reddit
Really depends on the games you play. But based on your GPU that CPU will last you a long ass time. You could easily upgrade to a 4080 which is over double the GPU performance and you would still be good with that CPU. So long as it doesnt die the 5800X3D should last a few years at least if you are expecting 4060 performance.
Once you start not liking how your system is performing the GPU would be the first upgrade easily to make the system feel brand new!
Ok_Piece_1910@reddit
Shoot, I'm hoping my 5800X and RTX 3070 last a few more years! I have thought about upgrading to 5800X3D but it may not be worth it to get such a similar CPU...which means I sit here jealous of your X3D :P
MeVe90@reddit
same build, I think the cpu will be fine atleast for 4 more years, expecially if you play at 1440p, you have to consider how weak is the cpu in the ps5 and ps5pro for example compared to the 5800x even tought is not the x3d.
The gpu on other hand would need an upgrade, I'm personally waiting to see the 5000 series and then decide.
deelowe@reddit
These days, a flagship CPU generally lasts 10 years.
Trypsach@reddit
The 5800x3d is not a flagship CPU though. My 2600x came out 6 years ago and is very much obsolete, but it also wasn’t a flagship. I would guess the 5800x3d lasts about that long or less
R3xz@reddit
I would even go as to argue that stuff below a flagship CPU would fair just as well, it all depends on what you use your computer for.

Sadly he is wrong. 10 years ago was 4th or 5th gen. Right now none of those CPUs will handle AAA new games. Heck I would argue this stuff lasts maybe like 5 years if you want to play the latest and greatest titles. However its not like your CPU will break. It will still work its just newer stuff wont run well without turning down settings. Ultimately one way to keep your cpu lasting longer is to upgrade to a higher resolution so that your cpu isnt being pushed as hard. The higher the resolution the more GPU bound you are. The only sad part is spending enough on the GPU level to get to 1440p is not as cheap anymore. Right the 4090 is not really bottlenecked on a 5800x3d at 4k however it will likely not handle a 5090 without limiting it slightly. So in the end the question is will you chase the dragon of the best gaming performance or accept what you can afford and enjoy a balanced system for years. The reality is your games will always still run the same as they do now. Its new games to worry about.
SBKoch@reddit
Tell that to my 4690k.
Intranetusa@reddit
I have an i7-4790k that is a 10 year old cpu and when paired with an RX6600, it can play AAA games like Resident Evil 2, 3. and 4 remake, Resident Evil Village/8, Doom Eternal, Control, etc. at 1080p at mostly high settings and get 60+ fps. It can even play the newest Silent Hill 2 remake at 60 fps and the cpu useage is mostly at 50-60% of the time while GPU useage is at 99%. Most games today, including triple A games today, are not very cpu intensive and the cpu intensive games often can often still be played if you lower the settings.
Grydian@reddit
You aren't playing AAA titles. Go try out alan wake 2 for me and see how it goes.
Intranetusa@reddit
You think Resident Evil games aren't triple A titles but Alan Wake is? LOL
Resident Evil games have a bigger fanbase, bigger name recognition, and higher budget than Alan Wake 2. Re4 remake had a budget of over 100 million while Alan Wake 2 was what, 70 million?
Resident Evil 4 remake sold 7x the number of copies as Alan Wake 2 and was one of the most anticipated games of the year. Re Village sold 8x more copies than Alan Wake 2.
And tbis cou can play the Dead Space remake too, and the DS remake sold 1.5x more copies than Alan Wake 2 at 2 million copies, but is considered a failure that isnt profitable for a triple A game.
Ruthlessrabbd@reddit
Yeah Doom Eternal and Resident Evil are like textbook definition of AAA gaming! You even mentioned Control which is also Remedy like Alan Wake 2 (as you likely know already) so idk what that dude is going on about. You never claimed that it can play the most demanding games available

Impossible to say. CPU performance increase these days is nowhere near extreme as it had been in the past. I was able to get about 10 years out of my 2600K and that PC is still used for lighter games like Fortnite.
I think the 5800X3D should be decent for at least 5 years of latest game releases unless there is some sort of massive gains through some technological breakthrough.
NZT23@reddit
At 1440P or 4K, it should last for more than over 5 years unless there is a change in terms of complexity in the gaming industry. Best bet is to wait next gen console or GTA 6 however 4k gaming will be standardised thus the demand for x3d chips may last a couple more gens.
Awesomevindicator@reddit
it should be enough for several years or even a decade depending on YOU.. like... when YOU decide its had its day, thats when it needs upgrading. there are people still using the i5 650 from 2010 and theyre happy with its performance... because they dont need more. maybe they only play terrarria, or some obscure outdated MMO from the era. a lot of people only play one game. so its impossible to lable parts as entirely "obsolete" while people are still using them and theyre still working well for specific applications.

Tbh I got the 5800x3d incase I do get a huge upgrade on my gpu, currently on 6700xt rn and I’m Pretty sure it won’t bottleneck a 4080 and if it does i doubt it will be a huge bottle neck to where your missing out on a lot of performance.

burakahmet1999@reddit

Just got a 5950 on the Amazon sale to complete my AM4 build, and I’m planning on just upgrading the GPU until the cpu bottlenecks it - that’s when I’d start thinking about it.
AM4 is pretty new to me, and if you’re being funny about it, it just got new processors released basically a month ago.
What I’ve learnt on all of the pc reddits is that everyone will consider components out dated two seconds after they’re out, so really, just figure out your own thing and try not to let them bother you.
GoatInMotion@reddit
It's a beast but also depends on your GPU. I plan to upgrade my 4070super to a 5080 paired with my 5800x3d and use that combo. I plan to use am4 probably till 2030 I kid you not... It is only till then I will upgrade my PC again.
Currently most games are maxing my 4070super paired with 5800x3d and while getting an even stronger GPU would increase my frames, getting an even better cou would also do the same but I believe the 5800x3d will still carry its weight far in the future.
So far all the game I play and that have come out I can run great at 3440x1440. I plan to rock an4 for
mattboner@reddit

Keep it until you upgrade your GPU to a point where in most games the GPU load is constantly below 90%, without a frame cap applied. That's a point where a cpu upgrade would result in higher fps, due to cpu being the bottleneck. Unless you're going with flagship GPUs, that cpu will last like 5+ years
Coolusername099@reddit
Sorry most these people dont seem to be giving you a real answer, shits so annoying. People like you arent asking for exact predictions as to the day it will stop being useful. You want a general time frame based on how similar CPU's of that level have lasted in the past

Absolutely; I built mine in 2018 with a 2600x and RX580, then later upgraded the RX580 to an RTX2060 Super. I have an i7-4790k that is a 10 year old cpu and when paired with an RX6600, it can play new/newish AAA games like Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remake, Resident Evil Village/8, Doom Eternal, Control, etc. at 1080p at mostly high settings and get 60+ fps.
The 5800X3D was released back around 2022 so if it is anything like the 4790k that is still decent after 10 years, then it should last you (2 + another 8 years) until 2032 if you are willing to lower the settings in newer games. More realisticly, if you want to play at higher settings and get all the latest bells and whistles, then you will look to upgrade in maybe 4-5 years.

5800X3D scales just fine on 4080/4090, and likely 5080/5090, as most power gamers will be using higher resolutions. At some point the 5800X3D and AM4 will be so slow as to bottleneck the GPU performance, but that’s not today.
You need some benchmark in the future proving hey, this ram is now too slow, or this architecture sucks. Look at how many more frames you would get if you moved to a newer platform, with the same GPU. Also at some point the voltage requirements of mobo slot will be too new, and your current old board becomes obsolete.

At 4k there is probably still no difference between a 5800x3d and a 7800x3d. It will depend on the game of course but overall it's still a beast and will be for years to come. If you plan on upgrading monitor to a higher resolution next time you upgrade your gpu you should be fine for a while. If you stay at 1080p it will be bottlenecked.

I do think we are at a point of diminishing returns, starting with the Ryzen 7000 series. 5000 series is still really good and will most likely last 5-7 years at 1080p. But if you really want the best longevity, AM5 seems to be the way to go. I don't think AM6 or even AM7 is going to provide 50-60% better performance then the prior gen tbh. I think since AM4 was out for such a long time, they could only do so much with that socket, which is why we saw huge performance gains with AM5. I could be wrong, but I don't think AMD will support AM5 like they did AM4.
