Ok, so no idea about your brother but I have a kidney issue, found randomly during a routing healthcheck. Within a month I was seeing a specialist, got diagnosed, and put on medication. I've had checkups every six months before being discharged from my specialist. No I'm with the GP and they remind me about my yearly blood and urine tests, I get reminders to check blood pressure and also invited in occasionally to have it taken by a nurse.

I met a guy via Reddit with the same condition in Canada. Complete opposite from my experience. The Dr has been very reluctant to refer him to a specialist as his numbers are still "okay". Numbers are worse than mine, and will probably be left to get worse before he sees a specialist.

Again, my point is that all countries have issues. Some will find Canadian healthcare great, others won't. Same here. I'm sure you can find people complaining about Austrian healthcare compared to Switzerland. It's all relative.

Though, this really isn't the place to get into this. This is a thread making fun of people who say these things, and you're coming in there meeting all the cliches.

Most of the increase in value has happened since 2000, well after those properties were refurbished. You could buy Georgian townhouses in good condition in North London for 5-7 times a mid career doctor’s salary, those are now worth £2m, perhaps 40 times the equivalent salary.

House prices in Britain are caused entirely by supply and demand, it’s a mistake to think that nice houses are inherently expensive, or that cheap houses are bad. The vast majority of houses in Britain are too small and too low quality, they are all expensive because supply and demand moves the entire housing market up or down.

My favourite day last year - we had friends visiting from overseas. We went to a National Park in the morning, then went to a Museum, then in the late afternoon wandered round some beautiful parks, stopped at some pub beers gardens. In the evening we went into the city, could barely get a table as everywhere was packed. It was a beautiful day, everyone was smiling, happy, everything we did was mostly cheap and free.

A lot of people see major improvements in other countries’ infrastructure while the Uk ( with the exception of London) seems to be stagnating at best. Services also seem worse.

I actually did a shop in M&S the other week because I’d heard on Reddit that it’s not that much more expensive and somehow spent (very slightly) less than a tesco shop. I work with someone who quit smoking it as a habitual smoker and he always says how much his life has improved since as he has a lot more tolerance for bullshit now whereas he used to fly off the handle at the smallest of things.

I spend a lot of time in Spain, and in the area I live in there amongst the expat community (I hate that term - just say you're immigrants, but that is another rant), there are a sizable number of anti-vaxxers, all of whom smoke heavily and think cannabis is a magic cure all. Virtually all of them also have varying symptoms of COPD, which results them just smoking more weed.

Like I'm not that hot on legalisation (that too seems to be promoted far too much as a cure-all with limited evidence, and I'm not convinced the solution to a country with rampant substance abuse issues is to liberalise even more substances) but as it is right now, I really don't care that much about people using drugs in their own homes away from other people so long as they don't affect anyone else.

But Christ alive it is not some magic potion that cures all illnesses. It's also not benign, and is actually harmful, and ingesting anything that deliberately alters your mental state and brain chemistry is not going to ever be 100% benign and have no effect on you!

But tbh, even in my local i will tip regularly, for me, I used to work behind the bar and I know after covid tips died down, so I partly do it cause I feel bad, but it's partly a bribe. The bar staff are the gate keepers of the cold dark Guinness. They need to be treated like the God's they are. And in return they will sometimes bless you with a free pint/coffee/chips/ offer you the good table etc. I've even had staff move current customers for me (NOT THAT I ASKED!! Just me and my partner came in and our usual bit was taken)

Now is that because I give them tips? Is it because I'm friendly? Is it because I'll help clean up a spill / don't leave the table in a mess. Who knows.

Eh, the pay isn't always terrible. Usually something you'd want to write home about, but enough that you're probably earning more than someone who's working an entry-level office job, and being in a job which is unlikely to be made redundant by AI/automation is an added perk.

The problem is that parents and teachers have a backwards attitude to certain jobs, and mean that Britons don't really want to do them or don't talk about them as openly and positively as someone who works a "cushy office job".

If you live a property as the primary resident (owner, sole tenant) ,that has never been metered, you do not have to have a meter. If you move you cannot refuse a meter in the new property but the water company is not obliged to fit a meter unless you ask - some companies are pretty diligent at that, some are not. It has been speculated (but I am not sure anyone had provided proof) that some companies monitor water usage remotely (they can make a pretty a good guess for a new customer by gross usage and past use) and only fit the meter if it will benefit them.

If you are not the primary resident, or you are renting on some sort of all inclusive basis, the landlord will likely be responsible.

It's factored into your council tax. Water rates are based on your council tax band. I know I'm a horrible nasty cynic, but I'm certain a significant proportion of people don't have anxiety/ADHD/autism, but are in fact attention seeking or hypochondriacs. I had to deal with an application in court recently where a witness wanted special treatment because of her "undiagnosed" special needs that had apparently never been picked up by any teacher in school ever and that didn't prevent her holding down a job, going out partying, and generally living a normal life. Just an example, but I see that sort of thing all the time.

Not all neurodiverse people were diagnosed as children. And it can present differently in girls than boys; if you're a 30-something or older, then there are plenty of us who grew up in a time where autism was widely thought of as a "boy" issue, and there was minimal support. So many women and girls were not diagnosed for decades because it presents differently in them than in boys/men, and it just wasn't recognised. We also get socialised differently growing up, and "mask" well. None of my teachers ever "picked up" on my issues.

An occupational therapist told my mother I was verrrry likely autistic when I was 17. They didn't refer me for diagnosis because I was about to turn 18 and there was no support available for adults - all autism support/resources were aimed at children and their parents.

I've spent years struggling, and have only in the past few years realised I could be autistic. Then there are long waits for assessment and diagnosis.

Just because I manage to function (ie, I can talk to people and live normally and hold down a job), doesn't mean it's easy or I don't need support. I went to university, I partied, I have friends and live a normal life. But there are so many times when I just don't mentally link things together, I miss social cues, things just don't occur to me, I have sensory issues, processing issues, executive functioning issues. I do make eye contact, but only in certain circumstances, and it's a conscious thing I had to spend years teaching myself, and it's still not automatic for me today. I expend a lot of energy masking to fit in and appear "normal", and it's freaking exhausting.

#3 - The anti-[whatever] brigades. Whether it's air-fryers, children, cars, etc... "You could buy yourself a new car to be able to commute into work OR you could just take public transport. I live in the centre of Manchester and can get from home to work in about 5 minutes using the local public transport network. I saw you said you live in the Highlands in another post a few weeks ago, but public transport should still be fine. But if the buses are less frequent, and you miss it, you could always just get an Uber. You don't need a car to get anywhere nowadays."

Whilst my experience might be useful for similar people or those who literally just want a small personal declaration of love, it’s hardly going to be useful for people who think of weddings and marriage as the most significant event of their lives or who have looked forward to that day forever. Like it’s nice to point out you can get a really nice hand made wedding dress on Etsy for a couple hundred or offer up money saving ideas but it’s not like people are being ridiculous for wanting nice things. I’m a 48 year corporate veteran and see the reality of work for what it is: A company needs a certain role fulfilling which adds £X of value to the business - the company therefore hires someone who has acquired the necessary skills and pays them around a quarter of the overall financial benefit they bring to the company. If that financial benefit is not delivered - for any reason - the job does not exist anymore. The company is not your family, it is entirely a cost/benefit financial transaction. Also - charmingly - no organisation is a meritocracy and shiny new business boys/girls get eaten alive by vile, deranged bullies as a matter of course - if the workplace bully brings in more money that it costs in complaints/legal action, then the bully will be allowed to continue.

My personal favourite is people bashing my Home town of Blackpool, 90% of people will no doubt call it a shit hole.

Whilst there are some very economically deprived areas (the same as most towns in the UK), there are some lovely areas that are genuinely a pleasure to live in. I've lived in much worse places.

I visited Blackpool a fair bit recently and had a great time. Yeah some of the streets from the from aren't great, but they've done a lot and are doing a lot to improve the place. Abingdon street market is also very good.

Tbf there are an increasing number of bots and troll farms from Iran, Russia and China active on here so not every account is human. Most of what they want to do is spread division and discontent so I am skeptical of how much of the "UK is doomed" that gets upvoted every single UK sub is organic.
