Today I ripped the tire clean off trailer axle.

This is my 9th day solo and might be my last.
I torched my tires last week by leaving the brakes on (remember me? 3rd day….) and also left my lights on over the weekend and woke up to a dead battery Monday morning.
I even broke the sign here for good measure.
For what it’s worth, everyone has been extremely helpful with fixing the issues and situations. +1 for my hope for humanity and society after this experience.
Personally though, losing hope every day about this trucking thing.
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
You fired yet???? Or are they waiting until you get back to the terminal
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Truthfully have not been fired yet or anything like that.
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
When do you get back to the terminal
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I’ll be there soon to get my truck air line repaired.
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
Take a shower first and be sure your truck is ready for a fast exit
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
Fired or no?
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
Silence is a defining characteristic of the word yes. At least you took my advice and showered first…..right???!?
Handmedownfords@reddit
The fact that you call that entire assembly a “tire” tells me you need some more training before you should be behind the wheel. There are way more parts ripped off there that you are actually supposed to check on a pre-trip. Please hang it up before you crush a car full of kids. Sorry if too brutal, but these are 80,000 pound weapons
HappyHeffalump@reddit
You gross at 80,000 lbs?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I mean good point, but I was also going for simplicity in the title, lol. Don’t read too much into this Reddit title post, please.
Handmedownfords@reddit
Haha. 10-4
Weak_Pause177@reddit
saw the tarp and already knew who it was💀💀💀not helping us Western Express drivers bruh😭😭😭
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Yea probably. I’m passed all my training up to this point so someone has said I was ready to go.
HappyHeffalump@reddit
Passing your training doesn't mean you're ready to go. It means someone trusts you enough to give you keys and continue learning without supervision. Everyone makes mistakes, but you've gotta slow down and pay more attention before someone gets hurt.
I've heard it's tough to live with being responsible for someone's death.
Show_Quality_Trash@reddit
That is not an achievement to brag about. that’s about as good as a participation trophy, I’m sorry your trainers failed you. On the bright side McDonald’s is always hiring
Safe_Fail_568@reddit
Perhaps you haven’t noticed but the standard isn’t very high there
rexiolvo@reddit
Not helping western express' reputation lol. Sorry that happened. But this might be divine intervention telling you that this might not be right for you
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks. Just a shame because I have been giving this my all.
Nikahelibo@reddit
If this is your all I’d hate to see you not trying. I recently had a trainee that made similar mistakes and got fired because of a severe lack of care.
Get your shit together. Think about what you’re doing otherwise you’re going to kill people/yourself and end up ruining your life.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I hear you. But I have done a lot of things right in my opinion, such as following parking rules, not speeding, asking for help when I don’t know what to do, being a nice person, being patient in solving issues. I’m, ironically, not attempting to cut corners. However I’m definitely anxious about this career in general, and have a lack of experience as well which is causing me a lot of failures.
the_otherdg@reddit
Being a nice person? My dude you just caused a lot of damage. Not going to be a cheap fix. No one is gonna say eh well he caused thousands of dollars in damage and downtime.. but yknow he’s an awfully nice guy. I drive dump truck and to my memory I’ve only hit one thing that was impossible to see in the mirrors, but I should’ve remembered it was there just from being around the property I was on. Luckily no permanent damage but my Christ dude you have to have your head on a swivel at all times. I’m not the best or most experienced driver but I sure as shit would be throwing the towel in if I was responsible for something like this.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, I could choose stop putting effort into being a nice person, and choose to instead be rude but I don’t think that would help me in literally any shape or form. I’m also not saying being a nice person excuses anything accident related.
the_otherdg@reddit
You gave it as part of a list of things you think you’re doing right? Nobody gives a shit you’re a nice guy. They give a shit you fucked up a buncha shit. I went to school with a guy that was killed cpl years ago when a Pepsi truck hopped a curb of the corner he was standing at, prolly just waiting for a ride. Wrapped him up in the axles and drug him 10-20 feet. Could be a person standing there next time you do an oopsie-poopsie and not a big fuck off chunk of concrete. I highly doubt Dax really cared whether the driver was doing the right thing by being a nice guy.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
You have a flawed argument imo but okay.
If the choice is be nice or not, I’m choosing to be nice. I didn’t say it impacts anything with safety as it seems you’re implying.
Question for you, should I choose to be rude or nice within this industry?
the_otherdg@reddit
Idc if you think my argument is flawed. Only one of us has ripped the entire hub off of a trailer. Hang the keys up and get a desk job.
CrispyLuggage@reddit
It will come with experience. Everyone is anxious about a new job.
On the Plus side, I bet you'll nmbe watching your trailer wheels on every turn you make...... Just remember to look ahead when turning too lol
This is coming from a guy that was inches away from driving over a fire hydrant DURING my road test for my first job lol. Shit happens.
NoMasterpiece2063@reddit
I'm gonna say this as nice as I can, nobody cares about what you do right. That's expected. It's your job, you're expected to know how to do your job. What you're not expected to do, however, is fuck up so severely that you cost yourself and your company money and down time or even worse you cost someone their life. Some people got it and some people don't but I'd take all 3 of these whoopsies you've been having and take a hard look at your hand in all of em.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Currently considering my options. Thanks.
Nikahelibo@reddit
Then you’re not ready to be behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound death machine. My other guy was similar. Get your head straight before you continue your foolishness
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks.
rexiolvo@reddit
I'm not trying to be a dick. And honestly, I'm not making fun of you. But here is a reality check. You drive something that is 80,000 lbs moving at upwards of 60mph. You are additionally responsible for making sure the load your carrying is secure. That all requires pretty ocd levels of attention to detail. And you have repeatedly demonstrated you don't have it. Whether it's nerves or anxiety, the end result is you could kill someone. Potentially, lots of people. This job is first and foremost being safe, being nice isn't a job requirement. You sound like a nice guy. But you don't seem to have the mentality to do this. No one will ever give a ahit about all the things you do right. But the little things you do wrong are potentially fatal. So let this be a reality check. If you can't do the little things right. Your gonna fuck up the big ones.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well I completed all my training with flying colors, it had seemed. At times I have questioned the training and the lackadaisical and subpar approach many have taken into teaching what they know to me and others.
So I take responsibility for the stuff I have done wrong, but consider maybe there are things and situations I had lacking preparation for which are causing issues as well. I feel like that’s a fair statement to be made.
AreGoingBananas@reddit
It appears that you lack common sense. Stop making excuses.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Okay, question, how long do you think adequate training should take in order for someone to go from no CDL to finally being behind a wheel solo?
AreGoingBananas@reddit
Can't Fix Stupid
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
So you have no answer?
rexiolvo@reddit
These aren't training mistakes. They are common sense mistakes. Going to fast in a turn isn't a training problem it's a common sense issue. You don't speed where people are walking around. You swing wide when you have a trailer. These aren't something in a manual it's a duh thing.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
What’s an appropriate speed for a turn like this?
rexiolvo@reddit
Your in a parking lot, no more than 10 ever, for a tight turn in a parking lot, presumably busy, with other walking traffic 5. Again if you have to ask you shouldn't be driving. Think to yourself do you like it when those asshole go racing by when your walking to your truck in a truck stop? I don't, so I don't do it to others.
DadBodHero24@reddit
And all your tires too
CraaazyRon@reddit
I don't think you have
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I mean, I have been watching improvement videos, asking for help, reporting issues, getting things on the truck fixed ASAP, speaking with my DM frequently, speaking about this career in therapy, taking pride in conversations about this career, trying to learn my equipment (albeit slowly), getting adequate rest and eating well, I’m sure there’s more.
egeorgak12@reddit
Growing up we used to hear stories about trolls that lived under bridges.
I guess nowadays you can find them behind the wheel for Western Union...
I guess living off the grid is no longer an option for them...
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Sounds like you watched Dora growing up too.
egeorgak12@reddit
Nah. I was a Power Rangers type of guy. But it's obvious that you are trolling us. No way you've done so much damage in such little time, and then come here with such a nonchalant attitude about it.
You're talking about heavy equipment that can get people killed and you're acting like it's a joke.
If you're not trolling us... then you're absolutely dangerous. You obviously don't give a damn about anyone's safety and should find another job.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I’m mostly just here trying to evaluate the current situation and my career and whatnot. Super open to learning as well as many have shared great advice.
I also never seriously joked about or made light of the severity of this industry or the skills needed to perform well within it.
Not sure how else you wanted me to respond to your comment in the first place though.
egeorgak12@reddit
The best advice that anyone could ever give you is to find another job before you get someone killed. You obviously pay no attention to safety or detail, and instead of getting your head in the game after your first incident in the first three days, continued to be careless and made things worse 6 days later.
You destroyed a tire, then moved your way up to an entire wheel/axle. The next step is a pedestrian or building.
Get out of the truck until you work on yourself and your attention to detail. You are legitimately a danger to yourself and others and have proven that you do not have the correct attitude and mindset for anything remotely dangerous to human life.
You're problem isn't with trucking or with the equipment. It's with you. Somebody entrusted you with an expensive, heavy, and dangerous piece of equipment, and you proved in no tome at all that you aren't taking it seriously.
One mistake is human, two is iffy, but three (especially of this severity) in less than 10 days is insane.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I’m considering all options for my career.
egeorgak12@reddit
Not to play with your knack for causing damage, but have you considered becoming a truck mechanic and fixing trucks for a living? They always seem to have more work than they can handle.
Or any trade really... Nobody is learning any trade anymore and they are all in demand pretty much.
jetting_along@reddit
Dude I'm not gonna bullshit. How does one accumulate so many iincident in such a short time? Are you ok?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I mean, I am simply not a good truck driver I suppose.
I’m trying my best to be though, I’m not intentionally messing up or anything.
jetting_along@reddit
Well we are all human. Take your time and don't panic. But for such a short time I'm not sure about your long term driving career furthermore. I truly hope this doesn't discourage you and you slow down and take a deep breath.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I hear ya, thanks.
PlateIndependent@reddit
If anyone on the administrative side sees this post and your replies your cooked my guy
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
What’s wrong with my replies? Some are playful banter on troll comments, most are positive or neutral responses.
PlateIndependent@reddit
They read as though you don't care......?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I mean I’m just trying to respond on the internet. I feel like if I didn’t care I wouldn’t keep responding and thanking people who give good advice?
Also there’s a lot of comments to respond to, so not every one of them has been given the absolute deepest response
BitEnvironmental4872@reddit
What type of training did you get? Just curious did you get your CDL with them or you had one already?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Got CDL earlier this year at a 2 month community college program and used it to get a job with my current company.
BitEnvironmental4872@reddit
So how long is training with current company before you were by yourself?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I drove for about 55 hours with a trainer, passed, and was given a 3 week break while they found a truck for me to drive, and then hopped in the truck about 13 days ago.
BitEnvironmental4872@reddit
Ok I see so what are you going to do now?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, I’m going to finish the week as strong as possible, and take more time to talk it over with some trusted people over the weekend.
BitEnvironmental4872@reddit
Cool that’s what’s up good luck on your journey fam
ResponsibilityTop732@reddit
10 year rookie here. Things I see here aren't good. You didn't swing wide enough to clear the obstacle and allow enough room for the trailer to clear. It seems your complacency here has cost you an axle and some other key components. What were you thinking when you did this? Is this the future of trucking here? If so, I'm scared for the rest of us. Your company failed you, your trainer failed you and you also failed yourself. Always be aware of where your truck and trailer are and what's around you. If you lose sight of obstacles while turning then immediately get out of the fucking truck and look. It didn't seem like you were turning off of or onto a busy street or highway, so you could've prevented this just by checking your mirrors or getting out and looking. Proper mirror adjustment goes a long way. Shrugging this off and making excuses is a really piss poor way,of looking at this job. The majority of us take this job VERY seriously. Safety is a big deal and you didn't take the time or put in the effort to give a fuck about safety here. That could've been someone's life instead of a concrete pylon and sign.
Just think of it this way: What if that was your family instead of concrete. You just ran them over and killed them. You caused thousands in damages that your company has to pay for and you get no repercussions except for maybe a loss of your job. Consider yourself lucky if that's all that happens or if you even get to keep your job. These aren't really rookie mistakes. These are mistakes that don't belong in this industry.
My best advice here is.... hang the keys up, get the fuck out of our industry and go find a job where you won't end up killing someone in one of our families. I'm sick of seeing stupid idiots come into this industry and give the rest of us a bad name
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I have a random question, what do you do when you’re driving down a pitch black road and cannot see the back end of your trailer or the surrounding environment?
ResponsibilityTop732@reddit
My guy. If you're on a highway, you have headlights. You should be able to see what obstacles are there before you make the damn turn. Quit trying to make yourself the victim here. Good on you for having the humility to post your fuck up but making excuses is another thing.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Fair answers to a valid question. Thanks.
ResponsibilityTop732@reddit
I'm not trying to be an asshole here. I just don't understand why new guys such as yourself that aren't getting proper training are being turned out to do this shit. You really need a better company but you've already kinda fucked your DAC report up. Do you still have your job?
ResponsibilityTop732@reddit

KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Expertise in soft skills
locolevels@reddit
Understandably it's on the passenger side, so it's easier to not use your mirrors in a turn because you have to adjust the mirror. But you have to use your mirrors. This is how people get killed. Bikers in bike lanes get rolled over on from the rear tires quite often in city traffic. Feel lucky that no one was hurt.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks for understanding the situation, and you’re completely correct.
SlothyTendecies@reddit
Goddamn. I'm not trying to be an asshole, but this clearly isn't for you. You took that turn way too fast for that type of damage. Clearly didn't check your mirrors and should have felt it. I would be in shock if you didn't get fired, even if it is Welfare Express. Even if oyu don't get fired, I still think you should move on to another career because you are careless. If you do get fired, you're not gonna be driving a truck anyways since nobody would take the risk with hiring you. That has to be almost 10k in damage in less that 2 weeks.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Yea I understand the situation. Definitely defeated and unconfident in my future as a truck driver.
AreGoingBananas@reddit
Please find something else to do, before you kill somebody.
NoShallot8563@reddit
Rookie still in training here. I landed my first job within the construction industry ( road construction) my experience within the first two weeks has been this. #1 the trucks in this industry are old and rough. They’re beat up already #2 the pay isn’t phenomenal and we work 12 hours (nights) but within these 2 weeks I’ve learned how to drive 3 different vehicles. end dump,Belly Dump, and now flat bed.
This was the 1st place that my instructor suggested I work at to gain experience. Let me tell you man our yard is wide open and sometimes we’re unloading road base, asphalt onto some huge ass hills. I’ve learned more at this job than anything could’ve prepared me for in school. School doesn’t teach you how to float gears. At least mine didn’t. I learned that here within my first 3 days.
Maybe you should try and so do the same? Don’t give up man.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks, I tried for 3 months to find a job that was local in search of something less unpredictable and alone, something where it would be easier to ask questions. Had 0 success, truthfully. Didn’t want to give up on the industry so I chased this opportunity (it was this or the many other mega flatbed companies and what was it) and have given it a lot of effort. Does mean I’m good at the job, doesn’t mean I’m prepared, and also doesn’t mean I should stay. But I’m considering all possibilities.
icsh33ple@reddit
Going way too fast and not watching your mirrors. You aren’t applying yourself and your attitude is terrible. If you keep it up you’ll end up in prison with a manslaughter charge.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
How am I not applying myself and what is wrong with my attitude?
I am considering not moving forward in this career already, so that has to account for something..?
ResponsibilityTop732@reddit
Get out then. We don't need people like yourself making mistakes like this. You'll kill someone. It's not like a fender bender where everyone goes home worrying about insurance claims. This shit is serious. Hang the keys up and get the fuck out of our industry
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Are you implying a fender bender is a more desirable type of accident? I would argue that it’s not.
Aggravating_Quote651@reddit
Damm dude that sucks, I don’t want to come off like an A-hole but maybe this isn’t for you. And that’s ok, you have to be extremely careful with these trucks. I triple check everything I do before I do it. Been trucking for 3 years never had an issue (that was my fault) your putting your life at risk and the life’s of others.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Shame cuz I really came into the industry to be a good truck driver and improve my life.
Mike0773@reddit
That takes alot of effort
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Failure takes effort as they say.
Angelbeast10@reddit
How man? I get stuck sometimes but i always stop before i hit anything and back up and wiggle my way out
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Didn’t look correctly. Imagine turning, thinking you’re going to complete the turn, all is well, and then BOOM.
Simply what happened.
buddas_slacky@reddit
I worked for western. They won’t fire you, but it will go on your DAC. I almost believe they want their drivers to crash so that other companies won’t touch them. I saw a western driver crash at a pilot then saw him a few days later at another shipper. Another girl bent the rear axels to the point they almost came off just like yours. She still there but her DAC has the accident. I got lucky and got out with no issues.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
So I most likely won’t be able to go to another company in the future? Sounds like I’ve tanked my career in this field and may have to leave the industry. This would be like only being able to play for one sports team in a sports league.
wittywillync@reddit
Western Express might give you a trophy, honestly. They are the new SWIFT in my opinion.

ElectronicGarden5536@reddit
Ive only ever seen that once before in 10 years of oilfield/merchant gas work. An Airgas truck was towed in after a wrong way driver slammed into the trailer at highway speeds. Just think about how much energy is needed for this to happen.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I was going about 15 miles per hour while turning.
Ok_Yogurt3894@reddit
That is way too fast for a tight turn like that. If you still have your job SLOW. DOWN. Think.
You a driving a truck, not a race car. Fuck traffic, fuck the honking, they can AND WILL wait on you to perform your job safely.
Mission_Stuff@reddit
This comment needs to be higher!
Adventurous-Koala-36@reddit

KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
They said this tongue-in-cheek in CDL school. “If you’re gonna wreck, make it a big one! Same paperwork either way, just makes it more exciting.”
FilthyNasty626@reddit
If your cdl school was that unprossional, then that might explain the general lack in quality of drivers we are plagued by in this industry
ResponsibilityTop732@reddit
Amen driver! Preach!
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
It was pretty laid back. The one instructor was a 10/10 in my opinion though.
MajorHymen@reddit
How the heck do you not realize your brakes aren’t released.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, I was on a loose dirt road so there wasn’t much friction stopping the empty trailer. Also, there is no beeping or anything while driving with the brakes on to tell you something is wrong.
roderunner1@reddit
You shouldn't need an alarm to know your brakes aren't released. You do have mirrors right? Maybe try hauling trash, or a tandem truck for a construction company.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, there’s an alarm that tells you that your door isn’t closed all the way if you drive about 5mph, and that seems menial. Why not for your main braking systems?
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
I mean I got one in my 2006 freightliner. The minute you touch the clutch it will keep and say your parking brakes are on.
My 2005 doesn't. So it probably depends on the truck.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
Yeah but that's for the tractor brake, right? There's no warning for the trailer brakes. Besides looking out the mirrors, anyway.
I'm starting to sense a running theme here...
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
That is true, yes.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
What my trainer wanted us to do was scuff the tires with our boot and pull up a few feet, then go check the tire again. If the scuff is still in the same spot, there's a problem. Simple, but effective.
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
That's actually a solid idea.
Our yard is gravel. So I'll start the truck. Do my walk around and I'll always pull up 5 ft and then walk around again. No skids, I'm good to go.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
I like that method. Most of our terminals are paved, so it wouldn't work for us. My current truck has a "creep mode." If it can't pull the trailer in creep mode and the air has stabilized, I know there's a problem. I'm fortunate that most of the equipment in this company is fairly well maintained.
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
Were in the process of upgrading trucks.
We get 2 or so new trailers ever year and never have a trailer longer than 8 years.
Trucks on the other hand we keep for a while, but maintain them well.
So while the trailers are all fairly new. The trucks are all mid 2000s except for our 1 pete which is a 2015.
But should be getting a newer truck next year and then selling an older model.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
That's pretty smart, I think. Are all your trucks bought new or used? I'm at a mega now, and my Cascadia is a '24 model. Scarlett is nice, but I kinda miss some of the creature comforts Ruby had.
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
Nah we're just a small operation. 4 trucks, 8 trailers. Family business. Grandpa started it back in the 50s. Then my dad and uncles took over in the late 80s.
We haul grain and move products for Nestle Purina or ADM.
We buy new trailers and nice used trucks.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
That's gotta be a good life. I'm hoping to luck into a job like that one day.
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
It's better than driving mega, for sure. Being OO definitely has its own set of problems and obstacles.
Like with Nestle, one of us is essentially on call 24/7. If one of their orders doesn't show up. We get the call.
if their plant goes down, we've been told it would cost them 1 million dollars an hour. So we've been called at 2am, 3am, 11pm.
We then either go to ADM and get product or they have storage bins thay we will go load and bring it to their using bin.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
That's true, but what I find most appealing it it is having the freedom to negotiate your own terms. Using your Nestlé example, I'd imagine getting a late night call pays better than a normal business call, and a holiday call better than a late night, right?
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
Oh yeah.
Regular rate with them is 350$ an hour that's with a 24-hour notice. Samw day service is 400$ and hour and holidays or anything between 10pm and 5am is 450$ and hour.
But we've also been doing this contract with them for 20 years and have worked our way to this rate. They pay it cause we're reliable and they don't have to shut down.
But it seems like we will do it a lot for 3 months then nothing for 2.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
One day, hopefully sooner rather than later lol. I like what I do, but I know there's better out there. I just gotta be patient and find it.
kinghawkeye8238@reddit
Hell yeah. You'll get there. Just keep forging and one day you'll have your own rig and own customers.
disturbedrailroader@reddit
Well, sir, I wish you the best of luck in your business. I gotta get a little shut eye for tomorrow. Got a load of drywall headed to Green Bay. Thank you for your words of encouragement and for being patient with my questions.

Tactrus@reddit
Reading your other post about forgetting to release the trailer air brakes and destroying the tires… these aren’t beginner mistakes this is being a lousy driver. Western might forgive you but this could’ve easily been a car or a building. You’ve got to slow down, take shit seriously and be aware of your surroundings.
The first load I had topple over on me going down the road I was so lucky it didn’t fall and damage a car or kill someone. The officer told me that if it had I would be going to prison.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Here I didn’t look out my blindside mirror, but what did you do wrong when your load toppled?
grawrant@reddit
If you have a load topple, it's because of a few possible factors. Speed too fast for the turn, wind speed too fast to be operating, and every single time because of improper load securement.
In your case, you were unaware of your surroundings, don't know your equipment well enough to feel when you have hit something, and you might have been going too fast for the turn. You didn't check your mirrors, and you are lucky it wasn't a lady on a cell phone with her back turned waiting to cross the road.
Know your surroundings, know the obstacles around you. Look around the truck every time you get out.
Know your equipment. If you hit something, forget to release brakes, etc, you should know. The trucks have power, you should know when you have a loss of power. Are your brakes frozen? Axle hung up on a curb or object? Boost leak under the hood? Clogged air or fuel filters? You should know when you have a loss of power. Get in tune with your equipment.
Mind your speed. You should never be traveling fast enough in a parking lot to do this.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Good answer.
Just for the record I was coming from a highway into a truck stop.
Do you have any advice for learning my equipment better? There’s simply a lot of equipment in and around the truck.
AmazingPancakess@reddit
What in the hell is confusing about your equipment? Binders, chains, straps, bungies and metal/plastic edge protectors that's it. If you are so damn confused about it stop doing flatbed because if you aren't fired for this you will kill someone, go to swinging doors
NoMasterpiece2063@reddit
Reefer and dry van don't want this attitude either. Some of the places I've backed into had me wanting to give up my cdl every 30 seconds.
Bro needs to go get a job at a fuckin guard shack or something.
AmazingPancakess@reddit
I don't doubt some of y'alls back can be bad however we go to live job sites or factories where we have to be super observant of our entire surroundings at all times. Not to mention we secure our own shit and him constantly saying he doesn't understand the equipment means he has no place to be doing flatbed
NoMasterpiece2063@reddit
I got my cdl doing flatbed, no need to explain it, I completely understand but his lackadaisical attitude about the whole thing is frustrating. No division of driving a truck will tolerate that level of complacency. I doubt the failure is all on him though. Whoever trained him and whoever gave clearance for his trainer to train ought to be held at least partially responsible.
AmazingPancakess@reddit
Welfare express trainers are rookies themselves. Talked to one of their trainers and he had only been driving for 3 months before they let him become a trainer, that while company is a 2nd chance company so their standards for drivers is super low
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I mean just as an example, I was uninformed about the exact use of the suspension dump button.
Learned about it more once I went solo and spoke to another driver exactly how to use it and why you even need it.
That’s just one simple example of how trucks are way more complex than first meets the eye.
Also, there have been the same questions I’ve asked different people and I’ve received contradicting answers on. Like, a “40 year experienced trucker” told me that he puts his straps OVER the rub rail because it saves him time. That contradicts literally everything I’ve learned from people even LESS experienced than him. Stuff like that.

No-Jacket9016@reddit
Everyone fucks up but 2 in one week is pretty rough… but you can always improve! It feels like you lack special awareness since you didn’t notice your tires not moving and you not analyzing this corner! You can still learn
weaponized_autism265@reddit
Hey man if it makes you feel better I’ve been driving for just shy of 5 years and a few months back I had my own fuck up. I was coming back from presidio Tx with a load of cows (I’m a cattle hauler) and took a wrong turn in Seminole Tx, I found my way back to the main road I needed to be on but I didn’t realize that the road I was on was lower than the main road and when I turned I got the bottom of my low slung cattle trailer beached on the fucking road. Tore up five cross members, needed another driver to come transfer my cows off my trailer, and a tow truck to get me off the crest. Cost my boss $15,000, he very well could’ve fired me and lord knows I earned it but he just said “don’t make a habit of tearing my shit up k?” And sent me on my way. Shit happens to everyone live and learn you’ll get it eventually.
ICheckRaiseYouFold@reddit
You have to be able to drive a regular vehicle proficiently before you can drive an 18 wheeler.
You probably need to be off the road before you kill someone
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I mean I’ve had a clean MVR since I was 18. (not that is saying I can or cannot “drive”) but yea.
ICheckRaiseYouFold@reddit
I'm shocked. Your nonchalant responses to the comments here is exactly what gets moms traveling with their kids killed.
It's not a game or a joke out here
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Not sure how “nonchalant” responses on Reddit having anything to do with driving. Also not sure what kind of responses you expect exactly?
ICheckRaiseYouFold@reddit
It's showing you are not interested in improving and just going with the flow.
That's what gets people killed. This us serious business my guy. You are literally a train on wheels
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, I’m trying to lighten my feelings of the severity, put this behind me, allowing me to actually have a clear mind to learn from this specific mistake, and the others, and focus moving forward. A lot of the nonchalant attitude is simply due to the fact that the internet lacks body language and whatnot, so nonchalant and direct I find to be the most appropriate responses, rather than, say, rage or sorrow. Although, part of me feels absolutely terrible and horrified of even doing something like this, it’s harder to speak that on Reddit, especially when many responses are sarcastic anyway.
ICheckRaiseYouFold@reddit
I understand. Most people get fed all the glitz and glamor of being a truck driver and don't understand the severity of it all.
You have to use common sense. And not try to yeehaww that shit. That comes with time and your ability in a truck.
I do wish you the best. And maybe this is all a wake up call. But if you have had this many accidents so soon. You definitely need some more training. 100%
redneckmarine77@reddit
I’m going to say this as nice as possible. If you’re going to continue trucking, please for the love of god, start paying attention. You passed your CDL test which means you should 100% know how to drive a semi, especially just coming out of driving school, everything should still be ingrained in your head. Furthermore, I’ve had my fair share of f-ups but I learned from them. In 9 days it doesn’t sound like you’re learning. I’ve had my license for years and just the other day I started driving away with my trailer brakes still on (mainly because I never pull my knob and someone moved my truck and pulled it) but still, my fault. You should decide right now if you’re going to hang the keys up or continue but if you do continue, tell the company you would like a trainer for a little while longer until you KNOW you’re capable of driving a semi confidently. You’re in a death machine that can kill anything it touches if you’re not doing your job properly. I’ll end it here but please listen to the advice so many others have given you.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks. Certainly considering stopping and leaving the industry.
redneckmarine77@reddit
Maybe just take a break, or get a local job. It doesn’t have to be the end of your career. I think you just need to take some time to learn some more before you go on your own again. That’s all

Breaking it off there is kinda impressive, actually. That's supposed to be hardened steel where the wheels are supposed to be attached.
Tip for being new still, always look at new places before driving in or through them. Plan ahead on how you'll move and when you move. Train yourself to remember this ain't a car anymore, too.
Download Truckers Path to your phone as well. Put the addresses in where you're picking up and delivering to. It will show the places from a birds eye view, giving you a better idea of the layout and entry/exit.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks, I’ve dabbled with truck path after the instructor suggested it in my companies training.

KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)

Ghee_buttersnaps96@reddit
I learned pretty quickly trucking isn’t worth it unless it makes you absolutely happy. I left to be a firefighter and while I’m always hurt, miserable, and fucking exhausted I’m happier than I’ve ever been. You can be run down and happy. If trucking doesn’t actually make truly content and happy. Leave. To many get stuck and ultimately end up regretting it. I had to file bankruptcy due to trucking and I wasn’t even owner op. Obviously if it makes you gleefully happy stay but when you bunk down tonight please brother. Sit on the edge of your bunk and have a conversation with yourself and whoever you worship if you worship about if this job is truly worth it for you…
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well I’ll tell you from day one that trucking is something I never considered and something that I wasn’t excited about upon first consideration. It has grown immensely on me since I first considered it, but I’m nowhere near in love with the industry or anything. I throughly enjoy parts of this job though, but a lot of it has made me question things.
Ghee_buttersnaps96@reddit
I enjoyed the travel when I was able to actually leave the curse of the tristate merry go round. That and towards the end I just said fuck it and did whatever I wanted and would quit places before I got fired. I recommend really thinking about leaving it behind. Find a vocation that you can go home and say “damn I really made a difference today” or “damn I’m really satisfied with everything in life”

nriojas@reddit
You left your brakes on and forgot? You smashing into shit with your trailer?
What are you even talking about? You should be rewarded because you do the most basic things of trucking right? Cmon man
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I didn’t say being rewarded, but I’m not out here intentionally being careless or anything. Simply trying to advance in a chosen career field as best as I can.
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
why did you do this???
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well it wasn’t on purpose so there is no intentional why, the how is that I was being careless, clearly.
Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit
No twist in the straps, tarp job looks like crap AND you fuck up company equipment……smh
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, to be fair, it was a preloaded trailer, which obviously is my responsibility, but it seemed good after I check it out at the beginning of the journey before I left.
Also, we removed some of the tarp quickly to get a look at the state of the load underneath and then I took these photos.
Also, no twists in the straps? What do you mean?

KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)

Itchy_Psychology6678@reddit

Hey, you stumbled into a job that, it turns out, you really suck at. It happens... Unlike a lot of jobs trucking has a very, very low bar for entry so it can be hard to judge just how shitty you will be when it's actually your turn to go solo.
I was in a repair job like that for 2 or 3 years. I only needed a two year degree and I was able to get in and start with the mechanical side of things but in a short amount of time I was knee deep in complex networking issues..fuck that. I had to admit I simply sucked at it and moved on.
Not for nothing but have you looked at radiology programs? Two or three year tech college degree and the jobs are great (plus youll make more money than you will trucking).
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I haven’t looked at radiology, but I do have a business bachelors so I’m working on that debt as is, very weary of back to school programs rn.
cheeze_whiz_shampoo@reddit
a lot of places are offering tuition reimbursement for hospital technician positions. Hell, the hospital near me runs their own education program (free tuition). They are all needed, really badly. Something to look into.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Will do. I always thought I would do a lot better in a hospital than out on the roads.
Servitus@reddit
Yo dude, these things happen. Just slow down, take your time and relax. Always remember that there is never a reason to hurry and that there's no amount of experience or expertise that changes that.
I started at Western Express over 6 years ago. I was terrified and over Mt head when I went solo. I immediately spent my first week solo driving in. blizzard conditions, thinking I'd lose my job if I didn't get to where they said the load needed to go, and when they said they need it to get there. Turns out, you're the captain of the ship. You decide the pace and schedule of your truck. The people who make it as drivers are the ones who never let any situation or schedule or driver manager dictate the speed, route or plan of the truck they are driving and responsible for.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Good response.
Diablo_Bolt@reddit
1 rookie to another, your not driving a truck your driving a trailer. I don’t care nearly as much where my truck is so long as my trailer is in a good position ( obviously so long as I’m not gonna hit anything ). I had a dock in St. Louis the other day where it really tested me and really reinforced that idea in my head. If your unsure on a turn go wider than you think you need to, I do exclusively night driving and I can’t tell you how many times that has been true the last couple of weeks. Your trailer axle is a cheating bastard it will go way sharper than you do and you ALWAYS have to account for it. I know people in here are being rough and some might even be assholes about it but knowing where your trailer is at all times is one of if not the MOST important parts of this job so its critical you get that part down ASAP to make sure this situation doesn’t happen again and so other people aren’t getting hurt.

Honestly this is the first comment I’ve seen of this point of view.
jarrodandrewwalker@reddit
I'm not going to lie...that's a lot of issues in a short time and the cascading effect of anxiety isn't going to help. There are some things you should consider:
-see if your company will allow you to go through their training process again. If so, listen, absorb, and emulate good practices.
-make tourself a physical, laminated checklist of things that need to be done before moving the vehicle, just like a pilot
-drive without ANY distractions until spatial awareness is second nature
-if you lived in a place that didn't require much driving, consider stepping down to a smaller class of commercial vehicle (Class B)
-if you do drugs, stop doing drugs 🤣

doinmydeed@reddit
Why aren't you paying attention and thinking about where your truck and trailer is at all times?
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I suppose it’s due to not having built the habit of keeping my head on a swivel.
freedomstingers@reddit
Dude keeping your head on a swivel is basic survival. Doesn't matter if your walking or driving or swimming or taking a shit. Always be aware of your surroundings. If you don't pay attention when walking you could get bit by an animal walk into something get hit by a car or so much more. Driving you have to look everywhere. You have to watch out for stuff and other people. Swimming there could be a danger around you and not know it if you only look forward. Taking a shit. There could be spiders or snakes or anything that bites taking their chance at biting you on the balls. Or if you shit in the woods a wild animal attacking you. Point is always be aware of your surroundings. You can save your life or someone else's.
doinmydeed@reddit
I would highly suggest you start the habit today. Even if you get out of trucking, it is important to be alert in life.
You need to be checking a mirror almost every other second. Where you're going is just as important as where your trailer is going. So why wouldn't you watch it just as much?
Props for being humble enough to post this. Three weeks into driving, I took out a cement pole stop sign at a guard shack. A few months later, I put a trailer so deep in a ditch I almost rolled. I've pulled air lines, nearly dropped a trailer, scratched other trailers, almost bent a bat wing, scratched a bumper, and driven around with my landing gear 1" off the ground. EVERY vet with tons of safe miles has a list of failures in the back of their mind, but they improved, will you?
This is bad, but it isn't the end of the world. Slow down, think everything through BEFORE you do it, have a set system when hooking/unhooking, double check, slow down.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
This is a great comment, thanks. I’ll take another look at this in the future for sure.
Scyths_A_Demon@reddit
Building on what u/doinmydeed said, yeah this ain’t the end up the world. Very few drivers actually have a million safe and accident free miles because there is always something they kept their mouth shut even if it was the smallest thing possible. I always tell people that the majority of your accidents are going to occur during turns because you didn’t stay wide enough or when you’re parking because you either didn’t out and look enough or you didn’t keep your trailer close enough to your sight side. Keep your head up and keep at it brother.

Strange-Disaster5398@reddit
If you aren’t fired then stop being so careless. You could take out multiple families at once. What if it was a child standing there? 15 mph is way too fast for any type of parking lot, any any vehicle. Especially one that has brake lag built into it. Regardless of what people say here, trucking is a skill, not a talent. You CAN hone it. You’re nowhere near experienced enough to be comfortable not having your head in a swivel. Just don’t take someone out in front of you checking so much. Always swing wide when possible. You’ll be considered a rookie for the next three years and there’s good reason for that.
Basic-Cricket6785@reddit

This…..The answer to what is wrong with trucking today.
SUSPICIOUSMEMBERS@reddit
What's wrong with trucking today is the regulations set forth strictly for the betterment of the power elite aka owners and the exploitative policies in which making less money as a trucker (OTR) for loads that create more money(revenue) for the company... Become a requirement or rite of passage due to "in experience".
Last time I used my thinking brain one would expect in experienced Truckers to be trucking in a errr more regional / restricted environment. But nah!! Send that trainee to the wolves and pay them shit!! OP is the byproduct of a system that created a way to keep costs down all the while getting rid of the COSTLY /PAID DECENT - - - Experienced (older back in the day) Trucker.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
What is that exactly? New drivers in general?
Fabulous_Force9868@reddit
Gotta slow down I understand the feelings of being new. But make a mental checklist of things. Small things are easy to over look then become big things
Luigi_Dagger@reddit
Im sure everyone here has given you all the advice there is to give. I will just say that at least it was a bollard and a sign you hit and not another truck or a person. Thats where shit really hits the fan.
Firedog_09@reddit
🤣🤣🤣🤣 that sucks man. You're not trucking material, go work for home Depot for a while and look at your opinions. Last thing we want is next week you fell off a bridge or something worse. It's not the end of the world, they will fix it. They will write it off their taxes and you will be fired. But at least no one got hurt but your ego and the carrier's wallet. Best of luck Ex Driver.

BL24L@reddit
Like that when I got it.
Drove Trailer 1/2 mile with brakes on, destroying the tires? That side must of been down when I pre-triped and I didn't catch it.
Left lights on and drained batteries? It worked the other day. Not sure what happened.
Completely ripped off your axel on a concrete barrier? This is one you have to own up to. Like that when I got it only goes so far.
Now. Instead of having 3 accidents you only have 1 and you still trucking.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Not exactly sure what this comment is saying, but I supposed I get the gist.
BL24L@reddit
Watch out ratting yourself out on small things that you can basically deny.
I would of put in a repair on the trailer tires claiming I didn't see that side on the pre-trip. If I was just going to drop and hook it I'd wouldn't say shit.
As for the dead batteries. Parked the truck and came back to it dead. Not sure what happened.
Even minor reports are seen as accidents in trucking and will f u up.
Try and learn from your mistakes.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)

Dangerous_Ad4451@reddit
Did you go through Trainee program before going solo? Just curious
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Yea I went through training with a trainer who has 9 months experience driving, and he was pretty good in my opinion. However, after passing training I did sit stagnant for 3 weeks waiting for a company truck to become available in order to go solo.

KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Maybe I need more training.
OutcomeSalty337@reddit
Not really. You need to search for another profession before your inattention gets you or some innocent people killed. You aren't cut out for this one.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I understand your point of view, but may you please explain how more training would prevent me from being a safer and better truck driver?
OutcomeSalty337@reddit
There are lots of people who should not drive a truck. After reading your post history I firmly believe that you are one of those people. I could be wrong. Before 9/11 I spent about 2 years as a driving instructor at a community college riding with folks who I knew wouldn't make it. They had grant money and some spent retirement money to learn how to pass a CDL test. Some were coming back repeatedly for a refresher. I think you should save your money for something else.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, what made them seem like not good material? I spent my own money to get a CDL for multiple reasons, so leaving would be a big decision for me.
OutcomeSalty337@reddit
It doesn't appear that you have the attention span needed for a high stress job. All the refreshers in the world won't fix that. You can spend all the money you want but I honestly believe you are wasting your time. Use your college degree, put in the work until you ARE making the big bucks. It's not instant. You maybe would make more trucking now. I see you as being unhireable after Western Express terminates you. Good luck to you in your future endeavors. Please pay attention so you don't hurt yourself.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks
Throwaway31702@reddit
Nah, I did something similar to this, bent the axle on a turn. Granted I didn’t rip it straight off but definitely did pop my tire. My company didn’t report it on PSP or whatever. I would ask your driver leader/dispatch for some grace on this if you can.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Well, everything happened, state troopers showed up, everything. So not sure how much grace I’ll get.
Throwaway31702@reddit
Who tf called the cops? And for what? You couldn’t have lugged that to an open spot somewhere and waited for a tow? I’m assuming you got a citation or something. Jeez that sucks.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I called the police since I was partially on DOT property (tail end hanging onto the shoulder) also, if I just hit something, and I’m new, I have 0 intentions of moving the load at that point. What if it tipped over?
DankDarko@reddit

Drunkpickle69@reddit
Won’t be to hard to fix that, I do it all the time. But probably gunna be spendy
prosullyer@reddit
Don’t let these negative, piss juggers discourage you in trucking if you can find another company or get WE to give you a 2nd change keep rolling. I fucked up bad when I first started and now I’m rolling into 3 years Otr going strong. Keep it professional at all times when you’re trucking that’s the key.

Shesnotintothistrack@reddit
I started 11 years ago, in a great local spot now. But I've never hit anything because I've always been very cautious and kept my head moving, GOAL, slowing down, etc. This job isn't for everyone, and just by my own experience in the industry, it doesn't seem like it's a good fit for you considering how many incidents you've had already. Idk what you were doing before this, but consider going back to it. These small mistakes can lead to more major stuff down the road.
ramanw150@reddit
Ay man my first week I knocked down a light pole. Shit happens and learn from it. We're all going to fuck up. It's life. Try not to beat yourself up to much. My step dad used to call me the walking fuck up.

toastyhoodie@reddit

KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)

toastyhoodie@reddit
You can’t deliver the load like that. And that’s not tires you ripped off. It’s the hub.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
The load has been towed to a tow facility, I’m grabbing an empty trailer and going to get the empty reloaded at the tow facility with the same exact product I was hauling originally. The broken trailer will get repaired.
Actual-Money7868@reddit
Bro just keep checking your mirrors and double check everything. When in doubt get out and look, regardless.
Maybe even find an empty lot to practice or something.
Treat every potential object as a baby stroller.
Turn of any music when doing manoeuvres
You got this.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
Thanks.
toastyhoodie@reddit
Do you understand the gravity of what you did? You’ve been solo for over a week now and caused upwards of $10k in damage. 8 tires and now this, plus property damage for breaking the sign. That’s not even counting towing and lost time for the load.
If they don’t route you back to a terminal to send you home, WE is more fucked up of a company than I even imagined.
I get mistakes happen. But there comes a point where it’s negligence.
KeyTheZebra@reddit (OP)
I totally agree, this is why I’m considering just being done. I feel undertrained and possibly under ridiculed at this point.
SuperReleasio64@reddit
I mean WE did try to make me limp home a flatbed that was twisted like a twizzler. I was all the way in Indiana and they wanted it in their main Terminal.
toastyhoodie@reddit

As a western express driver trainer, this is why I don’t fall asleep while trainees are driving. Lord knows what ya got going on.
You’re controlling a 80,000 pound death machine, you should be watching your mirrors every few seconds, especially while turning. I’ve had my fair share of mistakes as a rookie but this is just due to lack of care. This is why I give other western drivers space when on the road together

Another good title for this could have been "I wasn't paying attention to my mirrors properly" or at the very least you weren't paying attention to what you were seeing. Remember, if an object comes between the sight line between your mirror and the middle of your tandems/axles, then you ARE going to hit that object if you continue on that course. When making a turn, try to never let an object break the sight line to your trailer wheels. If an object does, then you need to either back up and reposition, or change your course if you have the time/room/turning ability to do so. Backing up would be better in most cases though.

This is why I told my new guy to stop worrying about the air lines he was murdering, but just not to hit anything. They went through the trouble of hiring you so ya might be able to stick around. For me accepting responsibility is huge, because that shows me you know you have something to fix. At best expect to be on thin ice for a year or two.
I had a new guy rip off a fuel tank and let it go. Kept having incidents that were never his fault. Guy just couldn't accept responsibility and improve himself.
I had a guy put it in the weeds the first winter and let it go. He's been great since - going on 3 years.
