There was a go fundme plus some social media person was going to give him a bunch of money. His daughter said she's tired of trying to keep up with him for the past many years to see if he's still alive. There was a social media person that was going to give him a ton of money and a new boat. But it all came to an end when people found a huge criminal record and he said the N-word while live streaming.
A Morgan is a very different vessel than that little thing. Does his companionway even close? Or is he relying on that canvas super structure to not blow away to prevent the rain from coming in?
That's one of those "covertible" Day Sailors with a raised/removable fiberglass top. Now, if he was smart, he would put the fiberglass top back down, bolt it back to the deck and remove all the canvas. If he doesn't, things might get pretty wet and windy inside once that top flies away to the Bahamas.
I am 90% sure that's a Catalina 22 with a pop-top. I had a 1984 for a number of years. The little bit of the interior I saw looked like my old boat. Most of them have a swing keel. I agree with you he needs to drop the top and button everything up. It looks like he's already removed sails. The surge and winds are going to batter that little boat against the dock.
I was just reading some comments on a video saying CG got him and moved him to a hurricane shelter, since water levels fell drastically from reverse storm surge, being on the north end of the storm. But yeah, I agree. I had a Catalina 22 as well, but not the pop top model. My friend had an Oday 23 that was a pop top and looked similar too. I think a lot of those little 20-25 footers are similar that way with pop top models.
I have an 85lb Mantus M2, Mantus Swivel, 200' of 3/8" G4 chain, 200' 1-1/4" anchor rope and a 2" rope snubber. My secondary is a 20lb Fortress, no swivel, 100' 3/8" G4 chain, 100' 1" anchor rope.
G4 is High Tensile strength, unlike standard BBB 3/8 chain. BBB 3/8 chain is ~2500lbs WLL while G4 3/8 chain is ~3800lbs WLL and above. My current chain is by Laclede and has a 4050lb WLL. I've never had a problem with it, even being on anchor for some real nasty +70kt wind Florida thunderstorms, not to mention being on anchor for the hurricanes but that's different since I either tie to shore or have a secondary anchor out. I had G4 1/2" that came with the boat when I bought it but it sounded like my windlass was struggling really bad under the weight and was so heavy, the bow was noticeably lower at the waterline.
Also my question. Does he have an engine that can counter the current when the anchor starts dragging? Does he have a backup anchor? I don't know where he is, but I agree that if he's smart about it, he can make it through.
If I had to park that boat at anchor for a hurricane I’d want a couple 200 lb Luke storm anchors, 300 feet of 3/4 inch chain and 200 feet of 1 inch nylon rhode on each. Even all that’s no guarantee. A big problem is other boats crashing into you. But I tell you what, those big fiberglass sailboats are built pretty tough. About the only way I thing I’ve seen do them in is hours pounding in storm winds after hitting a rock jetty.
If he left now, he could sail down wind around the front of the storm towards the pan handle, then around the tail end of the storm back to the original location.
I don’t think Dan knows how to sail:( I think this is the only option he has for a home & he is holding on to it for literal dear life. He was rewarded by a gofund me for staying through the last one too. He has probably been ignored by the world, on the edge of death many times, been homeless without having anyone bat an eye, give a care, or shed a tear. I don’t agree with him putting emergency services in danger, but I can also see how this has changed his life & if he looses it he is going to go down in a blaze of glory. I don’t agree with it by any means, but I can see where he is coming from….
That’s what bothers me too. My friends daughter is in the national guard & she might be put in danger. Make your own choices but don’t put others in danger.
Is that what it is ?? My dad & I thought so too. That’s what we have. I get nervous in winds over 20 ffs. We had a 4’ flood surge in the river a few weeks ago & pulled the boat.
A met a dude like this who rode out Zeta on a small boat in New Orleans. I’ll never forget him telling his story while working on what had to be his 30th beer the morning after it passed. I think I counted a dozen empty boats wrecked all around the dock.
Now I am not a smart man, but I am a “conservative” one when it comes to weather. I too will be riding this one out aboard.Aboard a Catalina 30, in Maine.
you know what they say? There’s one thing in life that you can’t fix this is why some sailors give others a bad reputation this is not tough. This is stupid.
I mean… I don’t know who’s dumber… this guy or all the people on X claiming a simple mackerel sky in front of a cold front is “evidence of the government using cloud seeding to create this hurricane”.
That's a sign that the current administration is inept. Install Donnie and his sharpie immediately, he'll fix it better than everyone else has fixed a hurricane ever before.
My coworker was ranting about how THEY are spraying chem trails to block out the sun preventing all of us from reaching enlightenment & that’s why the sky is never blue anymore.
Godspeed Dan! I get the logic of feeling safer on the water, but based on the number of boats I see run aground after even minor wind storms, your odds are not looking good.
Yeah, that's depressing. Guys probably got a lot going on, and while his chances of survival are greater than 0, we are realistically looking at a dead man, senselessly dying for mistaken beliefs.
Oh to be human, I guess.
I went to Tampa Bay sometime in the 90's and remember seeing piles of sailboats smashed up on the beach from a storm. This dude is going to die if he stays there.
Logic is sound if there were not also going to be 195 mph winds… another boat is going to fly into his boat. Or more likely his boat is going to lift up and fly into the side of a building.
