What is the best present for sail boat owner (34’)
Posted by Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 143 comments
Checking in with you guys on what would be a good birthday gift for a boat owner. 34’ sail boat. Cant remember the make but heres a pic- he has a dehumidifier already i was thinking something like that - also has the charcoal packs. Anything technical ? i think he needs a gas dip stick but i was thinking of something more exciting. Based in Oxnard California- price upto $150-$175 ish if needed. thoughts?

If only boats were modular and you could buy just two more feet of boat…
Potential-Elephant73@reddit
You could have a ship-in-a-bottle made.
theExistentialMisery@reddit
a 43' sailboat
hesmysnowman1@reddit
Plastimo iris 50
dustman96@reddit
A book about sailing or sailboats, repair manuals, spare parts. The best thing to do is ask the owner specifically what he needs and get that.
bagnap@reddit
A great marine knife
andypersona@reddit
In all seriousness, this.
CBLA1785@reddit
The Grohman Knives - Yachtsmans knife from this family run business in Nova Scotia has what I believe is one of the best sailing knives. My dad has had his for Over 30 years, and it still looks new.

I like fixed blade knives in a sheath. Faster deployment and only requires on hand.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
i love the quality here! thanks
gerbilshower@reddit
ill second this one. something with a marlin spike as well.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
wondering whats the marlin strike used for, pushing rope through a hole or ?
spinozasrobot@reddit
Boye knives. HIGHLY recommended.
Kindred_gg_wp@reddit
Hey man, Im new, but I've never seen someone recommend Swiss army knives for sailors. Is there a reason for that, are they just bad or?
spinozasrobot@reddit
It's common to wear a leatherman or similar utility tool, but not as a general purpose knife.
Electrical_Owl1155@reddit
Kinda hard to open with slippery hands and not one handed are the first reason crossing my mind
Throwaway-random79@reddit
Boye makes an excellent one with spike and rigging knife. Would love to keep that hanging from my mustang inflatable should I need it.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
thanks checking them out now
DalaiLuke@reddit
And then in the Box throw in duct tape and some standard size Vise grips... maybe some extra long needle nose pliers... they would be set for life
zabelacolypse@reddit
Myerchin makes a pretty hefty knife with a marlins spike. So handy to have a cutty-thing and a pokey-thing that fits on your pocket.
Firm_Objective_2661@reddit
Came here to say this as well. I believe the proper number of knives to have on board is N+1, where N is the number you currently have.
Otherwise, a good bottle of rum or whiskey is almost always appreciated.
andypersona@reddit
10 or 20 gs.

Bottom scraping coupons? You might have to get wet for the cash-in tho..
namocaw@reddit
Wife gave me one of these. I don't even own a boat!
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
what are you going to do with it ?
namocaw@reddit
IDK, Get my bum scraped?
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
your chocolate starfish ?! You sailors are a funny bunch...
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
ill side step that one thank you !
captainMaluco@reddit
Ah, so we're looking for the second best gift?
Well assuming it's a right salty old captain, who likes is whisky like he likes his cigars, I could recommend a bottle of octomore whisky! Smokiest whisky on the planet! And actually delicious (if you add a drop off water)
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
i do have my scuba cert so it is possible but what are you trying todo to me?! i will give Octomore a whirl. if you like tequila try fortaleza hard to get but bevmo gets it sometimes - limited production
captainMaluco@reddit
I'm just being a tease 😅 do check out octomore. Not sure how easy it is to find on your side of the pond, but where I am I can order it online through the government owned alcohol store 😁
Good luck out there! Hope your friend appreciates your gift!
JustAnRegularHuman@reddit
I got a friend a handheld anemometer (wind meter). I like to have one just so I can get the wind speed on the water, which isn't always the same as the wind at the nearest weather station.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
ooh interesting, you guys are on it!
rrickitywrecked@reddit
Seriously - image stabilized binoculars. Specifically, I like Fujinon TSX1440.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
thats a great idea. The fujinon mentioned are about $1300. Any suggestions for a pair sub $200 or is that so low quality not worth it?
rrickitywrecked@reddit
Does he/she have a good foul weather jacket and bibs? Still not $200, but less than $1300.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
we are on the west coast rain is illegal here.
rrickitywrecked@reddit
No image stabilized are in the $200 price range that I know of.
Antenna909@reddit
You can order a rum bottle with a custom label online. Put the boat name of a recent voyage on it.
Scared-Pineapple3331@reddit (OP)
great captain morgan does them on their website - ordered great suggestions
Antenna909@reddit
That’s great!
bernoulli33@reddit
Headlamp, I like the usb rechargeable one I got as a gift. Hats with the boat name on them. Laser emergency flare.
dah-vee-dee-oh@reddit

A pair of nice sailing gloves. Recommend the Gill Pro ones, yellow leather. I’d go for the 3 long finger version.
Or second a bottle of rum or a good knife. Spyderco makes a few actually rust proof ones with serrations.
VeganMuppetCannibal@reddit
What's the longevity on those? I've had a variety of leather gloves (mostly the furry split leather kind) that haven't lasted long. Wondering if the Gill Pro ones are any better.
senseiii@reddit
General consensus is that they outlast everything else. They last a lot longer than Harken or Musto in my experience trimming kite on J/70 and J/80s
3-2-1_liftoff@reddit
I second Spyderco. Used one for years and they are hella sharp and near-indestructible. Make 100% sure the blade locks, though!
I also second Gill Pro gloves. I just sailed with a pair that had been sitting in the attic for the off-season and they worked well.

SkiingisFreeing@reddit
Can I ask in what situations you use these things? Like you don’t just have your drinks in the cockpit?
raspberry_en_anglais@reddit
When you’re under way, and heeling over these will keep your drinks up right so they don’t spill!
SkiingisFreeing@reddit
Ahhh I see yea makes sense, thanks!
xClide_@reddit
Thanks!
CaptainTabor@reddit
I found these down below when I bought my little Tanzer 7.5 for 4k and I was like WTF are these things. Once I figured it out, they are by far the best piece of gear for lazy days at anchor or keeping a beer at a moderate heel.
bobber18@reddit
I used a bicycle water bottle holder, works perfectly on stanchions.

ericsonsail@reddit
Honestly, PFDs if they don't have enough for the number of people who would sail in a group. They amen be pricey, but a good captain has enough for everyone they can take safely at once, but they are an investment.
805maker@reddit
A nice set of hatch covers if they don't have them. I've got a 45' up in Ventura and it was about $350 for a set of 6 to cover all of my top hatches from these guys:
https://outlandcovers.com/
I just called them up, told them the make and model and they had the measurements already. They are WAY nicer than the canvas ones I had before.
805maker@reddit
I just looked closer, and it seems they've got a canvas set on already. Maybe revisit after the 2nd or 3rd set have blown off, and they're just leaving the hatches uncovered because they're fed up.

I have a boat, and on that boat, a bar. Trust me when I say that a bottle of booze a year ago ought not dissuade you from buying another bottle of booze this year. The thing about booze is that it's the gift that keeps on disappearing.
RedmundJBeard@reddit
Not sure if you were joking or not, but this is best. Get them something consumable, booze, wine, fancy sausage. I wouldn't get them any gadget or trinket that going to sit unused in their boat and just take up space. I think about every single thing that's in my boat and I want to be specific about each thing.
TreebeardsMustache@reddit
This is the answer: Unless you are a sailor yourself---and if you were why ask reddit---don't get a sailor anything sailing related.

If the skipper is an old salt he is likely well equipped. Things that wear out or expire regularly can be good gifts. Gloves, hats, socks (wool), flares, boat soap, sun screen, TP, head treatment, cash card for the fuel dock...
SunnyWomble@reddit
Sunglasses and hats often blow overboard. I have a stash but extras are received with joy
jh937hfiu3hrhv9@reddit
Sun glasses are a great gift but they might need to be prescription so that can be tricky and quality units are quite expensive.

If he wears sailing gloves, those will do nicely. Like others have said, the gear on board is carefully selected and there's no room for anything else. Sailing gloves wear out and they're not cheap. Figure out his brand and size and buy a pair of those.
