NTTA TollTag - use with rental car

I'm currently live out of state and ordered a $10 TollTag and registered our existing plates. I will be flying into TX using a rental car for 2 weeks. Do I need to affix the little sticker tag to the rental car and register the rental car plates? The website FAQ are confusing.

The license plate is sufficient. I believe the app now allows you to add an end date to it so you can’t forget to remove it

The tag is the easiest way for the system to identify you. A plate could be dirty or blocked or the weather could affect cameras, but generally the plate works just as well. I do some IT work in the tolling industry

You absolutely can. There’s actually a way to add a plate for a temporary amount of time. I do that when friends fly in and rent a car

I just want to thank you and confirm I added the plate number, make and model of the rental with an end date on ntta website. Very easy. Went through some tolls and it was reflected on my account. Unfortunately, they were not discounted but at the higher toll rate. 😕

Yes the reason is they have to do plate lookups so it’s extra hassle for the authority. But at least you don’t pay the outrageous tag fee from the rental agency

What I do is mae sure the account has my license plate number and I’ll check back in a week or so to make sure it’s reading it correctly. Then I just run all the tolls without putting the sticker. Their system will associate your tags with your account and deduct, if they miss one. I see it as getting a free toll.
