What is the most interesting interaction you've had on a train?

I'm currently sat on a train beside a man who's been helping develop robot dogs. He was telling me all about how he's conducting research to develop their movements and has been telling me how the evolution of AI has been beneficial to his research. He was even showing me videos of a prototype. His aim is to get them to carry out complex tasks. Their initial application will be to survey potentially dangerous sites like building sites and nuclear plants. Anyway, it got me thinking. What other interesting stories do people on Reddit have to tell about people they've met on a train?

I met a guy on a train, London - Edinburgh. He heard my accent and immediately offered up that he was also Scottish and proceeded to offer me some of his super strength lager. I politely declined but he then explained to me that he’d been homeless in London for about fifteen years and was on his way to his dad’s house. He said they hadn’t spoken and he didn’t even know if his dad was still at the address or even still alive. Explained to me why they fell out and what his life had been like ducking and diving in London. Was years ago, I still wonder if he ever made it and if he reconciled with his dad.

I was on the Overground with my dog and a restless young guy starting talking to me- he was just that day out of prison and going to see his friend in hopes of reconciliation- a friend he'd been in trouble with in the past who had refused all his efforts for contact while in prison. He was drinking to help calm his very rattling nerves. I knew it probably wouldn't end well, but hopef for his sake that day was an exception. Gave him a hug and said good luck before I got off at my stop.

She shared stories about her competitions and the techniques she uses to create incredible sculptures. It was inspiring to hear about her passion and the crazy places her work has taken her!

2 lads sat opposite me and started smoking heroin on the Intercity from Liverpool in the 80's. One of them remained cognitive enough to explain that it was called "chasing the dragon". I was about 14 and desperately tried to waft the brown smoke floating my way as inconspicuously as I could. They dived into the gaps between the seats to escape the conductor but got nicked at Euston.

Me, sitting at a table, aisle seat, window seat empty, train almost full, man in his 60s runs on just as the train is leaving Paddington and approaches me...   "is that seat taken?" "no, you're welcome to it" I get up to let him in "I want the aisle seat" "I'm sitting in the aisle seat, as you can see" "but I always have sit by the aisle" "Well not always, as I'm in it, aren't i?" "You can take the window seat as it's free" "so can you, as you're too late today" "FUCK YOU!" He storms off and stands by the toilets for the next 2 hours.   Well I thought it was interesting anyway.

On the aisle seat, you also have to deal with people constantly passing you by, sometimes squeezing between the seats...or putting their bags above you. Whenever the window seat person wants to go to the toilet, your relaxation is disrupted and you have to awkwardly stand up and pick up all your things. So you're getting up probably twice as much as you would by the window. You also don't have a direct view out the window. Whereas by the window you can chill and don't have to be disturbed by anyone. Can't be trapped by the person in the aisle seat if you're the person in the aisle seat. I was sitting opposite my friend in a booth in a pub and some tosser just plonked himself down beside her and refused to leave. Fortunately he was just a selfish, drunken idiot who thought he was entitled to the attention of two women who were in public without a man claiming them, but had he been dangerous in any way, we would have had a problem. He refused to leave and I couldn't get security to come no matter how loudly I shouted - and believe me I shouted. Nobody around us helped. She was stuck for a good 10 minutes before he had a lightbulb moment and realised we didn't want to fucking speak to him. (In fact, my friend was already crying because she'd just broken up with her bf and this prick was so self absorbed he didn't even notice.) So, no, I haven't sat in an aisle seat since unless I was with the person beside me.

I was once sat on the floor of a crowded train next to a girl I struck up a conversation with. Within fifteen minutes of meeting, and barely exchanging names, she lay down across me and shortly after went to sleep. There was absolutely nothing romantic or flirty about it, she just did it like it was normal and I was too dumbfounded to tell her no. She lay there from London to Durham before getting off, barely saying goodbye

I used to work as a matron in a boarding school, and one of "my" boys, who was very high maintenance but was a genuinely sweet kid if you could be bothered to get past his annoying exterior, left the school at 16 because we didn't offer the 6th form options he wanted. Cut to about six years later, when I happened to be on a train to London; it started to get close to the final stop, and as I stood up to get my bag from the rack I heard someone calling my name...and next thing I know, this burly guy is pushing his way towards me to hug the stuffing out of me! Yes, it was formerly-annoying-student, who was now in the Marines and who'd previously been the European MMA champion in his age group - it's amazing how much of a catch-up you can have in four minutes, lol.

Two times come to mind A woman jumped on the train at Leicester with a bulging handbag just before the doors shut. After the train left the station she asked whether it was going to Leeds (or somewhere, can't remember the actual station). Turns out her husband had locked her in the house so she'd put as much of her clothes in her handbag, gone out of the window and down the drainpipe. She was heading for a friend's house who he didn't know about. Five middle aged sisters all discussing the behaviour of a sixth sister at a recent funeral. As they'd all been there they never said what this sister did, just the fallout between various other relatives. I've always wondered what the sister actually did.

Not so much an interaction, but I was getting the train from Waterloo to a festival one year. A young woman, also going to the festival, had got on the train and placed her camping gear, rucksack and all her other things on the seat but was on the phone to someone at the same time trying to tell them what number carriage she’d got on. She steps off the train to look for this person just as we get warning that the train is about to depart. She stands outside the window of the seat where she’d left all her stuff, literally watches the train doors close even though she’d have had more than enough time to get back on and proceeded to let the train drive off with all her camping gear and personal belongings still on it. Just found it so bizarre because she seemed so nonchalant and completely unphased about the whole thing lol. Always wondered how she got on at the festival 😂

more scary than interesting. an odd looking guy came on the train and sat next to me. didn't think anything of it although i noticed he looked strange. very pale. shifty eyes. saw him again the next day. every time i laid eyes on him he was already staring at me. it was weird but the red flags popped up on the 3rd time i saw him. this was my usual route, why are we always on the same platform and getting the same train out of no where? anyway i decided to get off at a stop that wasn't my stop. wanted to see if he was following me. he got off too. he asked if i needed help(???) i said no! just leave me alone. i walked down the platform to the opposite end and noticed he was still on the platform looking in my direction. surely if he got off at this stop, he would have left the platform to get another train elsewhere or headed to the stn exit but no. next train came. i didn't get on it as i wanted to see if he would. he didn't. i got on the train after. i decided to get off at another wrong stop to lose him which i did. saw him again some weeks later and at this point i knew he was a threat. before the doors opened i got up to make it look as if i were getting off at the next stop. he shortly propped himself to get off. doors finally opened and i got off to which he did too, but i ran back on the train just before doors closed. safe to say he didnt follow as im sure he knew it would look weird. didnt see him again until a year or 2 later when i was with a friend. i never forgot his face so i was on alert. she sat opposite me on the carriage so i wrote up a message on my notes and showed her. it said something along the lines of 'dont react but the ginger guy that came on is weird and was following me on the trains at one point. lets get off at the next stop'. he got off before we could. havent seen him again since then. i feel he knew the message was about him. would you also believe that after we got off the train, my friend says the same guy made her feel uncomfortable on the train once and he would just not stop staring. awful experience. i dread to think what he wanted with me.

Travelling south in England I sat opposite someone and overheard she were heading down with mum to be added to the bar. All sounded very interesting. Heading back that eve we just happened to sit opposite again, we recognised each other from the morning, I offered some space for her mum to join her and we all chatted about just about everything. Some lady was arguing that a reserved seat was here, it wasn't reserved but I couldn't be fussed with it so I got up and left. I walked for a while and eventually a person asked if I wanted to sit down at one of those 4 seaters with a table. I said sure since the place was packed. The person opposite would not stop talking though, asking very basic questions like do I listen to music or do I have a phone. Turned out he had special needs and was sat there near a staff member so they could make sure they get off at the right stop. He was nice but I could not talk for 2 more hours, so though I felt bad I just said I had to get off and moved into the next carriage so I don't hurt his feelings.

I met a guy on the train who auditioned for some kind of tv show. We talked a little before doing our own thing. He got the part, saw him on TV later. I saw the king of the north on the underground in London, he sat across from me. I was like wait, I know you from something. Oh right, then went back to my phone. I ended up sitting next to a guy on the train who was playing a PSVita, I was playing on my switch. We got talking about modding the vita (I have one as well). Train broke down so we ended up talking more before jumping on a bus replacement and sat together, still chatting. Nice guy. Another time there was a young teen and her grandmother was putting her on the train alone to go see her mother. She was scared. Found out she was going to my stop so I told her to sit at the table with me. Grandmother looked relieved when I gave her a thumbs up and the kid was all smiles. Apparently I'd walked into a carriage with some drama going on and the other people at the table quickly filled me in on what they knew already. That was one interesting train ride.

i was riding the tube on LSD with my friend on our way to a gig in london. we were dressed to the nines in our best shell jackets and bucket hats, funky specs, and all! we spotted a woman who (genuinely was, we weren't hallucinating) sketching us from a couple seats down. we asked to see, and it was so cool! she'd drawn these really cool caricatures of us. they looked great! sadly, we were in a hurry to get out - and a bit too acid-y to ask for the drawings, a picture, or her details, so we never saw her again!

Not terribly interesting itself, but it qualifies as my most interesting train interaction: 20 years ago my neighbour gave me two dollars after a trip to the U.S. I carried those around in my wallet ever since, for no reason. On a trip to London I was set next to a girl from the U.S. She was about to watch a movie and offered to leave her headphones unplugged so I could watch as well. So we watched a film to pass the time and then I repatriated one of the dollars.

I saw two young women, I think a couple, have a clearly vicious argument (although it was not conducted in English) that escalated into violence. One slapped the other in the face, to which she got up and sat in the seat in front, then the first one grabbed her hair and yanked her head back through the gap in the seats. I read my book and pretended not to notice.

Catching a train with my colleague to London around 15 years ago and we were sat opposite a lady and her daughter. The daughter was around 8 year old and was blind as she had lost her eyes to cancer, which is extremely rare. The Mum was amazing and had done so much to help her daughter, her daughter was so lovely and such a joy to talk to. I left the train with a new found respect for what people can overcome and achieve.

2015ish - Two young girls (maybe 6+8) were running up and down the packed train in pjs and wellies. They didn’t seem to have an adult with them so I (19ish) at the time asked where they were heading and who was meeting them at the other end. They were sweet but you could tell they were lying when they said they had someone waiting for them. The train was due to terminate where I was getting off which was a few stops away. I got the girls to sit with me and we chatted and I called the police while leaving them with my mum to watch. Came back and spent the rest of the ride with them. Police met us at the other end and told me their mum had been napping and they had slipped out of the house and jumped on a random train. Quite frightening really to think if I want such a nosey git I’m not sure where they’d have ended up or who’d have found them.

Guy next to me fell asleep and started dribbling. The two guys opposite me noticed first and were quietly having a little laugh about it. I noticed them laughing and looked over and it tickled me just right after a long day of work and I couldn't hold the laugh in. My inability to hold it set them off. It was the three of us sat at this table all crying with laughter over something really silly and honestly not even that funny. I enjoyed this interaction with these two strangers a lot.

I once had a semi personal phone call with my then girlfriend and the guy over the aisle was so obviously listening in to everything i was saying. So once i got off i made a second fake phone call full of tanitalising lines: "do you get the stuff" and "did you think you were being followed?" and "you cant blame me for being scared after what happened to Dave". I stole the idea from the TV show Frasier. When i "got off" the fake call i made eye contact with the guy and he couldnt have looked away quick enough

In 2011, I was on a national rail train and was making general chit chat with a lady who was around my parent’s age. She eventually told me about her kids. Her adult son suddenly went missing in Cambodia 13 years ago, and she never got any answers to what happened to him. She still kept hope that her Son would get in touch one day. She couldn’t bear to think of him as dead, because she wouldn’t be able to cope with the pain of it. I think about her story often, and it breaks my heart every time. I’m an atheist, but I pray that she gets definitive proof and closure about what happened to her Son.

Not interesting as such, but always stuck with me. I am extremely claustrophobic and had to travel to Coventry for work. It was OK on the way there, but the way back was hell. I managed to get through to my seat, but more and more people were getting on and crowding the aisles and I felt like I couldn't breathe and was spiraling into a full on panic attack. The woman I was sat with must have noticed and she just chatted away to me about stuff I had to think about, and managed to keep me calm for that journey. Don't think I've been on a train since but she was bloody wonderful.

Was on the train back to London and there was this child on the train by themselves perhaps aged around 12 not speaking and clearly in some kind of situation. They were just sitting blank faced and weirdly still. Eventually someone asked them if they were okay and apparently they’d missed their stop. Why they didn’t just get off at the next one I don’t know but they stayed on for AGES. Over time other people starting getting involved and asking them what they wanted to do or offering help. It developed into into essentially a punch up between several parties over what was the best thing to do to help. Why? I have no fucking clue. It was honestly baffling. All this commotion and heated arguments all while this kid sat there in COMPLETE silence. They barely said a word even to a kind and polite lady who initially asked. Eventually someone got the train staff member down from wherever they were and they passed them onto another staff member at the next station. Far far from where they were meant to be going. The lot that were arguing before proceeded to also get kicked off the train as one was threatening to get off at the other one’s stop and beat the shit out of them. Again, how it got to that , no idea but impressive escalation. One party said it would be best to get off sooner and another thought it would be best to pass them over to staff in London!? Keep in mind the journey was hours long. I did text it all to BTP while it happened but heard nothing back. This was all over the course of almost an hour as well. Crazy shit.

I had placed my suitcase on the luggage rack, in a sensible way that made efficient use of the space like a normal human. A woman got on and proceeded to remove my suitcase and replace it with hers, leaving mine tipped over in the middle of the aisle so it obstructed everyone. I got up and removed hers, put mine back in its place, and went and placed hers on her lap. It wasn't small. She sat there with it in her lap for the next hour, at which point I got off.

I was sat in the aisle seat by the door, back of the train, and I notice up the carriage some guy, drunk, is abusing a woman I assume is his girlfriend. It's vocal and everyone can hear and see it but are ignoring it. I'm getting worked up seeing it and no one interjecting and what finally set me off was the guy spitting at the woman. I get up in a rage and shout at the guy "what the fuck are you doing? Get the fuck up" or something. I dunno I was in a rage. Made the guy swap seats with me on the threat of violence. Sat down and gave some tissues to the woman and said she should do better. A few minutes later he comes up saying something like "she's a cunt etc" and I told him to sit down or I'll smash his face in. Everyone in the carriage was looking away ignoring all this. Fucking cowards. Still makes me angry. When we got to the station I walked her out while he lingered and staggered about. Watched them both go there separate ways. And I'm 6'5 with very short hair. I've scared myself in the mirror a few times. I'm well aware of how scary I can be. Also same train different day I wasn't feeling well so I was late going to work. Got on and sat next to a woman to work. Later that day felt much worse and I decided to go home early. Got on the train and the same woman was there and we sat in the same seats. I remember being amused because she was on the phone and said "mum, the man I was sat opposite on the train earlier just sat in front of me". Funny. I wasn't feeling well enough to flirt or make a joke about it.

Two American ladies, friends of mine were travelling north from London. As the train entered the rural areas they began to sees all the cattle and sheep in the fields. 1 Oh look there a a field of cows, oh and another one. 2 Look there are sheep over there 1 yes and over there. Etc etc Apparently after a while a reserved English man said. Ladies you really need to get out more often. In their defence there are few animals not in a factory barn style farm in their part of the US.

Haha that is hilarious. I've had a couple of funny experiences with American tourists on the trains before. One was like yours, I was going home from university (I live in the SW so it obviously gets much more rural the further you get from London) and the amount of gushing about the beautiful countryside was astounding. "Look at that little village! Omg it's so cutesy! Isn't it amazing that that church could be a thousand years old" kind of thing. To be fair it was quite wholesome because if I was coming from a new world country I'd be quite amazed at how old Europe is as well. Another one was the classic loud American tourists, but these ones were deafening. They get on at Basingstoke (really random place for tourists to get on), shuffle up and down the busy carriage, it was obvious they were looking for a seat. Rather large daughter finds a table at the end of my carriage and yells at max volume at her mother at the other end "MUM! THERE'S A SEAT HERE". Cue embarrassed looks from all the Brits in the carriage who don't want to make a scene. Funniest thing was the lady opposite me delicately rustling through her bag for some earplugs. The rest of the journey I found out how loud Americans are even in "quiet" conversation, with gushing about countryside etc. as well as a right palaver when it's snack time; they had to get all their bags down from the rack. I think everyone in the carriage was glad when they got off. Final one was an American lady on the phone, on speaker, talking loudly, in a quiet carriage. Electric train so very annoying, and this lady completely missed the silent glares from the whole carriage. She only realised when my dad quietly got her attention and pointed at the quiet carriage sign. Looked very embarrassed for the rest of the journey!

He had quite the tale to tell of lost love, losing family members and ending up on the streets at a young age. I wonder what became of him.

There was a young lady who worked on a farm and was telling her friend various facts and interesting things about farms and animals. The most TIL for most of us sitting nearby was that sheep only have two nipples so if a ewe has triplets they have to take one off her and get it adopted by another ewe. That was my interesting fact I would tell people for years after lol. Most fun encounter was changing for a train to the village that never turned up. Me and two young lads waiting in the cold. When we established with the guard, that was buggering off home, that there’d be no more trains that night, they did their best gentleman impressions and offered to see me safely home. They were bemoaning how boring it was in the village as it was a lot of old people who didn’t like change, and the things they wanted to change. They were actually rather community minded but since we were all inebriated it got rather Citizen Smith. There’s a short cut down a canal path which was very dark. I said ‘no offence but I would not feel safe walking down there with you’ and he said ‘that’s very sensible you should not go down dark canals with strange men, onward!’ And we went the long way home plotting the Village Revolution. As we reached my flat I showed my age, raised my fist and said ‘power to the people’, which they thought was brilliant and did the same before we parted ways. Lovely lads.

I was spoke to by a traveller who was very drunk, he'd just won 50k in a bare knuckle boxing fight and had been refused entry to the ferry back to the UK because he was so drunk. I was on a train to Paddington about 15 years ago and as it was nearing the station a lady asked for help getting her case off the rack. I helped her get it and as there were several of us standing in the ailse, she said 'do you want to know what's in the case?'. We looked at each other and said ok and she said 'it's the real Wallace and Grommit'. It turned out she worked for Aardman in Bristol and was taking the models for some kind of shoot in London. She got the Grommit out so we could take some pictures

I once got on a train after a work do, having already changed trains once and knowing I had to change again and would probably miss my connection, not looking forward to it and planning on sitting there being grumpy listening to music. I found a seat in a four by the door and a guy started talking to me which I immediately tried to shut down but I quickly realised that the guy was there with his carer and he was harmless. We ended up playing cards and chatting for the hour, had a lovely time. Throughout that time the guy kept on telling me about the assisted living place he lived in and I could always come and live with him etc, I played along but also made it clear I was married. As I got off the train to leg it to my connection I heard him say, why are the best ones always married

Was taking a 3 hour train back home, and was on an end-carriage seat next to a spot for wheelchairs. A couple stops after getting on, a man in a wheelchair comes and claims the spot, he was dressed in a tracksuit and had white socks with a suspicious red pattern on them, and a huge bulging stomach. He was probably around early 30s, I was 17 or 18 at the time. I like having my own space, and tend not to really start talking with people on public transport, however, people seem to always start a conversation with me. He was asking where I was heading, how my weekend was, so I replied normally and returned the question. He said he had just been let out of jail, and pulled up his tracksuit top to reveal a police tagged bag with his belongings. He said a gang had jumped him and beat him, breaking his ankles, hence the blood on his socks and the wheelchair. Didn't really know how to respond, so I asked "why would they do that??". His reply, "Because I stabbed one of them!". When the train was nearing my station, he asked if there were any chippies open nearby at that time, and I knew there was so told him where. When the train stopped, he didn't wait for any assistance getting out, but just launched his wheelchair out the door and onto the platform, almost tipping backwards on landing. If anyone's curious, he was from Hartlepool. He told me if I ever visit Hartlepool, just tell people I'm friends with \[whatever his name was\] because he's a self-professed Big Deal there.

Probably just the racist old man. I was sat in the corner seat, by the window. He came and sat in the aisle seat and for a few minutes we had a cordial chat. Then the train stopped at a station in a town that had a higher proportion of ethnic minorities and he began making a number of highly racist ‘jokes’, very loud as old men do, centred around their cultural fashion. I didn’t find it funny, but I wasn’t confident enough to tell him to STFU especially as I was trapped in the corner (though I regret it now), and I’m fairly sure that most people on the train thought I knew him, which made it incredibly uncomfortable. I didnt speak to him after that and couldn’t wait to get off.

I have had two weird encounters on a train, does this count. I am male and in my 50's. The first encounter, was a young man who sat opposite me and started talking enthusiastically about life. Slowly, without noticing he had started edging forward with his knees touching mine. Then as he was chatting and laughing I felt he was trying to part my legs slightly. It was done so slowly and I am always trying to be civil and polite that I did not say anything. However, a few minutes later he was parting my legs quite wide. As we went through a tunnel he really parted my legs, at which point I got up and waited by the train door. The second encounter was with a wretched woman drunk to hell trying to fight me on the train. She was smoking and drinking cans of special brew. She was trying to grab my hair and swearing. Eventually she started talking to me and found out I had grown up in the same town as her. The next thing, she lifts up her top and shows me where she had sliced her stomach with a razor blade several times a few days previously. She then dived at me and snogged me on the mouth. I got off the train and walked a mile home with my mouth open and without swallowing.

A very good question, and not one that occurred to 17 year old me to ask until afterwards. He was actually quite a nice bloke, and I knew nothing about nothing. I remember he had a black bandana, cheek tat, sleeveless denim jacket. Very gravelly, cracked voice. Trad Hells Angel wear I guess. But I didn't see or think to ask about his colours. He told credulous me stories about the Hells Angel HQ in NY, how they used to guard the end of the street and what not. I still don't know if he was yanking my chain or not. He sounded and looked the part.

Was on the train on a Friday night about 7ish going to Huddersfield from Manchester, i'm the only person sad enough to be going to Huddersfield, no one else on the train but me, we just get outside of Stalybridge and maybe 200-250 morris dancers get on the train out of nowhere, all of them smashing sticks together, bells, dancing, skipping about like they do, all of them dressed the same in yellow and black, they stay on for one stop and all get off leaving me sat there questioning weather or not that crazyness just happened. I as a young man sat in a seat by myself, I was reading a fantasy book, the usual swords and sorcery type, probably David Gemmell or something similar. There was loads of room to start with, but eventually it filled up and a young man saw me reading my book and sat next to me. He sat there quietly for a while reading a book himself, but eventually he started talking to me, I responded and we chatted quite happily for a quarter of an hour we talked about my book to start with. Then he tells me about his book, it was called “White Gold” and it was a historical fiction based on fact story of a Cornish man kidnapped by Spanish pirates and sold into slavery in Morocco in the 15th or 16th century, it sounded interesting, but before he got too far into the story we got to his stop and he turns and says to me “here you can have the book, I was hoping it would justify selling black people into slavery because they did the same to us! Bye.” I was left stunned to silence, and he was gone before I had to think of a reply, I still have the book somewhere. TLDR: I met a young man who gave me a book because it wasn’t racist enough for him.

Was travelling to York the weekend Pride was on there. Whole train had been decked out in rainbow bunting, balloons etc. I ended up sitting next to a wonderful old fella, maybe in his 60s, who introduced himself to me and ended up giving me the total lowdown on his life. He was kicked out of home when he came out to his parents, saw countless friends of his fall victim to AIDS, including his partner in the 90s. Somehow he survived through it, was saying how sweet it was to see younger gay people be able to openly celebrate who they are. I wasn’t going to York for Pride but I ended up tagging along with him.

I met a guy on a train and we discovered we both had issues with our wife’s, his wife was very attractive, had a good job, very wealthy and absolutely incredible in bed however he had grown tired of her, the relationship was strained and he was having an affair with another woman and wanted out, mines was a cow, boring, lazy and our sex life was non existent, so we made a pact, we would both kill each others wife’s, we wouldn’t be suspects so we would get away with it, he murdered my wife and I put an anonymous tip in, married his wife and he’s now doing a life sentence

I was once reading The Major Transitions in Evolution by John Maynard Smith and Eörs Szathmáry on a train, and a man sat opposite me asked me what I was reading, told me he was a cellular biologist, and explained exactly why he disagreed with the authors about certain parts of a hypothesis in the chapter I was reading. In other fields, having some stranger disagreeing with a book you're reading on a train is annoying. In science - and when the counter arguments are evidence based - it's really interesting.

Not on a train but at a train station waiting for one, I was sat next to this guy who was holding a parrot on a harness. I was kind of thinking outloud and said "is that a parrot?!". The bloke invited me to pet the parrot's head which was pretty nice.
