Where would you go on holiday in November?
Posted by loz90@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 96 comments
Me & my partner would like to go on holiday for a week in November but there aren’t many places that aren’t too far on a flight that still have decent weather & don’t shut down for the Winter. Does anyone have any recommendations at all?
We’ve been on so many city breaks we’d rather something that was more beachy but we might be asking too much in November! Am I asking the impossible?
Additional info if you have it in you to carry on reading… We live in Sheffield so we’d travel from any airport within reason as we don’t really have one!
Not expecting 30 degree heat, just something warm.
I’ve looked at Portugal, Greece & the Canary Islands - do the restaurants etc shut down here at this time of year?
Any thoughts are appreciated!
pajamakitten@reddit
My aunt and uncle are currently in Cyprus.
There is no way restaurants shut down at this time of year in those countries. They know tourists still come for better weather than they can get back home. Besides, they are still open for locals. It is no different in the UK.
anxiousFTB@reddit
+1 for Cyprus. Great weather.
SmugglersParadise@reddit
Even in November? We did Crete in October a few years ago and the weather over 2 weeks was patchy. Some sunny days but some cloudy and rainy days too
anxiousFTB@reddit
Really! From memory it was really sunny when I went in November 2021. However, I was staying at a hotel with an unheated pool, and it stayed almost completely empty all week. Even the Russians couldn't do it.
SmugglersParadise@reddit
It was for us, maybe we went on a bad week?
Jesus, downvoted for sharing my experience, cheers Reddit
anxiousFTB@reddit
Just saw this - it wasn't me! I've given you some upvotes to counter :)
TobblyWobbly@reddit
We went to Malta and Gozo in November. It was pleasantly warm and everything was open
bellathebeaut@reddit
I'd second Malta. It should still be good weather, Valetta is a great city with plenty to do and the island is small and easy to get around.
TobblyWobbly@reddit
It's a gorgeous city. The Lascaris War Rooms are so interesting, and we did a self guided walking tour of the Three Cities, which I just wanted to go on forever.
johnny5247@reddit
West coast of Scotland. Strangely warm weather microclimate due to the gulf stream. Mull of Kintyre Campbell town has palm trees. Isle of Islay has 8 distilleries. Both have nice beaches.
Safari_Tom@reddit
Agreed on what you've said, but the darkness is a huge issue in November.
And I think warm is being used comparatively here....
Yoguls@reddit
Tenerife, always a safe bet
Far-Bug-6985@reddit
Went end of may for a week and it was either cloudy or raining…
MuddyBoots472@reddit
We’ve had some nice breaks in Costa Adeje in February and Easter. Only issue we had last time was it was full of older people (we’re 50ish and felt young) Guaranteed good weather is amazing though
The_39th_Step@reddit
Go to the North East part of the island, it’s amazing. We stayed near Taganana and I couldn’t recommend it enough.
I don’t like Costa Adeje etc where most Brits go. It’s pretty trashy and just generally not very nice.
Colourbomber@reddit
I agree but in its defence its a completely different place in the winter, january February is brilliant there, no nob heads, hardly any tourists mostly Spanish people, just mainly locals and surfers around, everything is still open.... There is just a nice amount of people around for it not feel like a ghost town but can comfortably get the nice seats in places
It is a bit trashy during the summer, lot of stag do type things going on, or just lairy drinkers.... But there is non of that in the winter never been in November I'd imagine it would still be busy....just lovely and relaxed though in Jan and feb, the weather is 24-25 odd day it gets hotter, can easily just be wearing shorts all day and going for a swim... It's how you imagine a holiday being.
We hire a car and go for a drive to the north for a day but at that time of year it's colder in the north, but November would be nice still
I wouldn't consider it normally but I'm a tradesman and we often don't go back till the 20th.....and at that time of year it's the only cheap place you will get some sun so I normally disappear for a week then and I really enjoy it.
Just came back from. Valencia 2 days ago, it's about 20 degrees in November, and we found flights from Brum for £32 return in November and it's and absolutely stunning place.
yorkspirate@reddit
You've sold me on taking a trip to Tenerife later this year
The_39th_Step@reddit
I don’t like Costa Adeje and that corner. It’s just a bit naff. Honestly the north east is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been
Colourbomber@reddit
I mean if you are after culture it's best to wide berth Tenerife entriely...and go to Bilbao, Valencia or Seville.... I think about the only reason people go there is because it's cheap and and sunny at that time of year, and often thats all people want in winter, but the north is around 5 degrees colder and rains more, the water is colder and is windier and more unpredictable which kind of defeats the object.... Although November time would be better than say jan/feb
I go to Tenerife to get a cheap get away in the sunshine through the winter, i don't go to be blown away by the cuisine or the history, we have a couple of city breaks in the year for that.
If you are after natural landscapes La Gomera or Italy pisses all over anything Tenerife can offer.
But La Gomera is very expensive, Bilbao, Valencia Seville and Italy aren't that warm in winter.... Sunny but you will need a coat....you certainly won't be swimming or wondering down the beach in your shorts.
If you like hiking, Mountain, Biking, handgliding wind surfing then I'd definitely say the north is a better destination or even fuerteventura instead.
If you want to relax around a pool all day or have kids and you dont want to very much apart from relax and eat with guaranteed sunshine and it not run in to 1000's the south is a better place.
The_39th_Step@reddit
Anaga is amazingly beautiful and it’s also only about a degree cooler. It was basically the same temperature. You also have La Laguna which is the oldest Spanish colonial city and Santiago was fun, we stayed in a Venezuelan neighbourhood. Most people never even bother visiting so they don’t know how great it is. It’s far more like La Gomera than it is Costa Adeje.
You can have the cheap weather and be somewhere great. We’re hikers and it’s excellent.
Colourbomber@reddit
No it's not for me in the summer either not even mentioning it's way too hot for me to tolerate, it's very touristy, but it's more tolerable during the winter as you do just have the place to yourself ... And I've got 3 requirements in January... Cheap/Sunny/Cheap!
I prefer beach cities like Valencia, Barcelona, Lisbon etc, you get a proper mix of culture and a bit of beach holiday at the same time, way less touristy or the shitty tourism anyway and there is just generally way more to see and do over and above walking round beachfrint shops with kilos and souvenirs which is basically all tenerife really has in general and some nice beaches and sunshine.
The_39th_Step@reddit
That’s fair enough. I agree about the shopfront stuff. Tenerife has excellent mountains and national parks and they’re superb for hikers. Sunshine in the winter and it’s not too hot.
Colourbomber@reddit
Yeah if you are an outdoors person I can for sure see why you would like the north, La gomera is beautiful you would love it there, it's less baron than the others just plush green everywhere I've stayed in Puerto de La cruz and driven around the north and it's definitely more picturesque.... Fuerteventura was cool for that albeit a bit windy even in the summer and thought how cool it would be for mountain biking and stuff like that, you also have the dunes which are pretty cool to explore as well but it's just full. Of windsurfers and mountain bikere and that type of thing... So definitely a hot spot but the weather is way way more temperamental there, we went late June early jusly once and we had to wear jeans and jumper a few days.
loz90@reddit (OP)
Thanks for all that info! Good to know about the surfing in Tenerife, I hadn't thought about that & that would be fun!
Valencia's a great shout too, always wanted to go there - will have a look, can't really say no at that price! Thanks so much
Colourbomber@reddit
Valencia is ridiculously beautiful I'd go as far as to say the nicest city I've ever visited and I've done most of Europe's major capitals..... it's still warm. By our standards in November, it was meant to be on average 23-25 whilst we were there end of Sept early Oct, but it was 29/27/30/31/32, it was hot hot some days... So it's deffo warmer than what they state it's says highs of 19 so I'd be expecting 22-25 degrees around the middle of the day in November if not warmer. It just won't get light till 8/9 am and will start going dark at 5pm...so it's a shorter day of sunshine but it was still warm at night after midnight you needed a jumper.
In terms of food and culture it's in absolute abundance there, the food is literally mind boggling good and I'm even talking down to what you can get at the supermarket and central market it will blow your mind... It's has a nice beach but you are best to stay in the old town and get a tram out to the beach..... It's a loveky beach playa de Las arenas or malvarossa but it's not geared up as a resort so it's residential and honestly a bit rough in places great in the day wouldn't wonder round there at night, but the old town is stunning and it's very very affordable there.
If you wanna laze around on a sun lounger with warmer weather and just plod and just worry about what you are having to eat each day then Tenerife.
stickyjam@reddit
Even then most of these types aren't going adeje they're in playas. And still rather isolated, I've done Tenerife in the summer once and twice in the winter, as you say the population drop off is just nice, not a ghost town. Had no issues on either of my 3 trips to Tenerife for nob heads, yes there's some people drinking to excess but they were too themselves, perhaps a Reddit snobbery/social issues thing.
Minimum_Donut_24@reddit
Go tenerife, Costa Adeje, was there at the end of September. Super clean, safe, best beaches. The only downside is the British tourists on flights from the UK. Always drinking, two had their passports taken. Costa adeje was mostly full of European tourists, and they are a lot more behaved then the bits.
Tenerife can be cloudy, but I still got sunburnt through the clouds, and when the sun does come out, you have to hide. But the sun seems to melt the clouds and it was always sunny in the afternoon.
NoVermicelli3192@reddit
Egypt. Hurghada or Sharm. Sun. No rain.
Risk rain etc in Canaries. 5:30h flight.
DarthScabies@reddit
We are in Kos at the moment and the weather is amazing. It starts to cool down in a couple of weeks but is still warm. If you stay in Kos Town it's generally busier and things close later. We're by a smaller village on the other end of the island so things are starting to wind down a bit.
Much-Tadpole-3742@reddit
west indies is only a daytime flight
loz90@reddit (OP)
If only we had the money for the hotels :') one day haha
Much-Tadpole-3742@reddit
fair enough but it can definitely be done on a budget withapartment rentals &air bnb. great food, cheap transport and the worlds nicest beaches to lay on for free. definitely consider it especially off season
loz90@reddit (OP)
Oh that’s good to know! We normally do one big long haul a year (always East Asia) then try to do smaller, cheaper city breaks around it. I think we’re starting to get itchy feet for some chilled beach hols now so something like that is one to consider! Do you have any favourite areas?
Much-Tadpole-3742@reddit
't definitely worth doing a chilled beach one my kind of thing is going off the beaten Path Similarly. barbados, st lucia is good but a little rough. cuba is worth a visit

rachw39@reddit
Canaries and in particular… Tenerife. Still lovely weather in November. We went to Costa Adeje in July and went to some beautiful restaurants. It wasn’t packed with tourists and obviously is a lot better than playa!
Andr0idUser@reddit
Porto is cheap this time of year. Download the "Luckytrip" app. It's pretty good at this. Will find you the cheapest flights & hotel anywhere and if you book with them it's Atol Protected.
loz90@reddit (OP)
We went to Porto a couple of years ago in November & fell in love with the place, the people are some of the nicest people we've met! Never heard of Luckytrip, will have a look - thanks so much for the rec
Andr0idUser@reddit
Its amazing there, especially for how short the flights are. We just used Luckytrip to book Denmark & Sweden. It was good, definitely worth a look for cheap trips. Happy Travels 😊
loz90@reddit (OP)
I've literally been sat on Luckytrip for the last half hour, I'm in my element! Thanks so much for sharing it

I agree, some places do shut down in November, but it can be very peaceful!
pixxie84@reddit
I always end up in Egypt or Mexico in december (avoiding christmas with horrible family). Mexico is probably too far but Sharm is 4-5 hours flight time. I tend not to leave the resort as i’ve done all the touristy things and get a swim up room instead so i can be properly antisocial and read.
loz90@reddit (OP)
This sounds like my kinda place! Is swim up room on the filters?! Ha. This is my only goal now!
pixxie84@reddit
Yeah its usually on the room selection bit. Last place I went was the Tui Blue Sensatori Coral Sea in Sharm. I asked for a quiet room with a swim up so got parked right at the edge of the hotel. Overlooked the beach and the sea, a waiter came by every now and then and got drinks for me (had to get in the pool go fetch them) and there was a indian restaurant five mins walk away from my room.
Plus if you hang about the main pool for a bit in the afternoon, you get to watch the aqua aerobics and the instructor seems to be all about trying to get people to splash themselves without it being obvious. It made me cackle.
loz90@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much for all of your suggestions, it felt like a bit of a dumb question but we haven't been on a 'warm/beach' holiday in over 10 years so it was a bit of a minefield throwing November in the mix too.
Looks like we're spending our day going through all the options - thank you!!
And happy holidaying to all those with winter sun holidays booked <3
No-Pattern9603@reddit
I agree that Canaries at the very nearest are your best option for a mid haul break with good chance of nice weather.
We're booked for Lisbon in half term (late Oct) and the best we can hope for it 20oC and sun.
loz90@reddit (OP)
We were thinking of going to Lisbon but want to save it for when it's spring/summer with a bit more chance of getting on the beach. Have a fab holiday, I bet it'll be lovely without the summer crowds!
ian_s@reddit
Caribbean. Specifically Exuma in the Bahamas imo. Peak season so everything open.
loz90@reddit (OP)
We can only dream, one day!
wetrot222@reddit
Never been there, but always wanted to visit Madeira at that time of year. Flights are cheap, you should get 20C most days, the landscape and beaches are fabulous and it's just a bit more adventurous than the usual options.
loz90@reddit (OP)
I've always wanted to visit Madeira too, I didn't consider it for November! Thanks for the reminder :)
sierra771@reddit
Rio de Janeiro, a 10 hour night flight both ways, and two hour time difference so no jet lag. Fly out Friday night from Heathrow at 10pm, get home Monday 7am and go straight to work.
Ashley67899@reddit
Did you miss the part where she said not too far a flight..
loz90@reddit (OP)
Haha they did sell the trip well though! If we didn't have to get back from London to Sheffield on the Monday morning I'd be tempted :D
Harrry-Otter@reddit
Crete will be the warmest unless you want to go to the Canaries (in Europe). Sicily could be a good shout as well.
loz90@reddit (OP)
Oh I'd love to go to Sicily, thanks for the reminder!
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Valencia will be warm like a good British spring, and is a lovely city to visit.
Candy_Lawn@reddit
i went to Gran Canaria for Xmas a few years ago and was sunbathing on xmas day.
Specialist-Web7854@reddit
Lanzarote. It’s the best canary island! Has the bonus of being able to have your dinner cooked over a volcano, you can visit a crazy underground place built into a lava tube that looks like it belongs to a Bond villain, or you can just lie on the beach.
Cooganred@reddit
I go for my birthday every November, always mid to upper 20s. Puerto Calero is my happy place ❤️🌞

Egypt's great and November's a really good time to go. Whether it's Luxor, Cairo or Aswan, they aren't shut down.
Closer, I would go to somewhere in Italy, like Rome or Florence. You want somewhere with some inside things, too. Get a horrible day, go to the Duomo or to see the Pieta.
The really good place is Lebanon. Great beaches, history, wine making. But probably not a great idea right now.

Correct. I have been to Egypt in November and was amazing 28C weather.
