What’s with people blatantly driving through red lights?
Posted by whatsapprocky@reddit | driving | View on Reddit | 358 comments
I’ve seen about 4 people go through red lights in this week alone. My city doesn’t have very many traffic lights, but the amount of people I’ve seen do this is absurd. A few weeks ago, someone driving a Chevy Cobalt actually went around me while I was sitting at the red light. They crossed into the oncoming lane to get around me and drove through the intersection just moments before the light turned green. I had never seen anything like that before, it felt like a Grand Theft Auto moment.

Traffic behaviours are harbingers of the state of society, as a whole, IMO. I see a LOT more aggressive, impatient, downright crazy behaviour in traffic these days. Extrapolates, in my mind, to a stressed, pissed population. Just my measly 2 cents.
GlobalEnema@reddit
And you can't honk at them either, because their fragile little ego's will crumble and they'll pull a gun on you
SkoomaSalesAreUp@reddit
It's also harder to be a good driver when you're on your smart phone. More and more people are getting addicted to their devices and can't even stop for a drive
Humble-Train7104@reddit
I had 2 cars in a row totalled out by drivers on phones.
Defiant-Scarcity-243@reddit
I was driving on the highway the other day. I was in a 65 zone. The guy in front of me was driving about 45. I passed him and looked over, no joke, the guy was looking straight down at his cell phone while driving on the highway. The entire time I passed him he never looked at the road once
kannagms@reddit
Just yesterday, some fuck in a Honda SUV damn near crashed into me twice.
On my way home from work, I go to this light that has 2 left turning lanes. I go into the far left one. This guy is sitting behind a few cars in the right one. They decided just as I was right there that they needed to be in the far left one since no one was in it (besides me coming up. Cut me off, I had to slam the breaks. He was close enough that if I had reacted 1 second slower or if he made that choice 1 second later, we would have collided.
It was dumb because as soon as we turned, he got back into the other lane. He literally just wanted to be ahead of 2 fucking cars (mind you, he didn't wait until we had turned to merge, he did it mid-turn too)
A bit while down, I have another left turn to make. This one is a single turning lane. As I'm getting close to it, I'm right next to the Honda. He tries to merge into me. The only reason we didn't collide was because my turning lane came up and I quickly got over.
And it didn't end there. This guy, sitting in the straight lane, decides to cut off everyone in the left turning lane as we got the green arrow, so he can go left.
I get it, you need to turn here, but you weren't in the turning lane just fucking go straight, there's a fucking place to do a u-turn like 50 feet after the light.
I literally only have a max 10 minute drive to and from work (currently). I get cut off, brake-checked, nearly merged into on a daily basis. Plenty of people running red lights too.
UnitedCommunity6377@reddit
I know it’s so rediculous right now on the roads your taking your life chance everyday you drive I take 2 lane back roads stay out of town and away from the narcissists out there. Atleast if they want do drive stupid on back roads theirs places to let them around. Then when they crash ( hopefully hurting no one but their selves) you beep, wave and roll right by
FoxCitiesRando@reddit
I have at max a 14 minute commute and I see this shit every single day. I could let me car get totalled probably twice a week if I wanted to just not get out of the way, slam my brakes, etc. I probably see people run red lights at 50% of the intersections I go through.
The area that I live in could not care less about facilitating the flow of traffic, so I'm not really surprised that people don't give a shit. It's miles and miles of untimed, uncoordinated lights.

Sheriff's deputies pull em right and left where I am. They got a cash cow right at Indian Trail on 74. They make a killing off right turn lane surfers.
TheAncientMadness@reddit
yep. the mental illness is on full display
FalkFyre@reddit
I believe this to be correct, although I never thought about it this way. My experience was living in Las Vegas before moving back to Oregon. When a light turns green, you'd wait a few seconds for people to blow through then go. It wasn't like this in Portland, Oregon, when I was a kid until the influx of Californians and others. Portland was peaceful back then. Not blaming the Californians, but as the place became more populous and the fast mindset came this way, plus the homeless, drug, and mental health crisis made its way here people blow through red lights constantly. Just my anecdotal experience, but it tracks with what you are saying.

Antique_Brother_9563@reddit
Spot on. Things have degraded highly since the pandemic, social unrest, and the defund the police narrative. The police in my area (Gwinnett) hardly write tickets for regular traffic infractions anymore.
xXxDickBonerz69xXx@reddit
Police funding has only gone up since 2020. Stop believing nonsense propaganda.
twowheelpimp@reddit
Yup....i might add that the behaviors you mentioned came out of the pandemic magnified 50x and it never seemed to abate. If anything, its gotten worse
NoMansSkyWasAlright@reddit
Another contributing factor is the fact that in the states, you pretty much take the driver's test once and then never again (unless you're old as hell or get caught driving drunk multiple times). So people get complacent and start making stupid decisions behind the wheel and I think the year or so of non-driving kind of compounded on top of that.
twowheelpimp@reddit
Getting a driver's license in the us is a joke. A german or japanese style licensure should be adopted
RowEastern5695@reddit
Business owners would freak out. Especially outside of the cities. Other than a precious few major cities, you can't hold down a job without a car.
ChillSygma@reddit
I worked with traffic data at that time and it was really fascinating.
The executive summary was basically top 10% of speeders started driving faster. The bottom 90% didn't change too much. And this had a very direct causal effect on traffic deaths, and if I recall correctly, pedestrian deaths in particular.
We had so many charts of pre-pandemic and post pandemic traffic histograms that looked totally the same except it got wider to the right.

In my area it was mayhem right after covid but I'd have to say it's more or less back to normal. Noticed sooo many red light runners at first but now I can't say I've seen one recently at all.
Huge_Strain_8714@reddit
I've taken to the commuter rail for work. Takes longer, more expensive per month, I'm not guaranteed a seat BUT I don't need to drive!!!
Nova17Delta@reddit
More expensive per month, but if the train breaks down guess who doesn't have to pay out of pocket
Huge_Strain_8714@reddit
The monthly pass is more than my car payment on a 2020 Ford Titanium Escape, which I'll own for a decade, so there's that. It's awesome for weekend getaways. It's a payoff, in a non perfect world!
Nova17Delta@reddit
Depends on where you live. Here at most a monthly pass will run you between $72 and $216 (depending on how much you use and how much you use over it). Its a little complicated but if you take a bus to the station, take a train between stations, take another bus to wherever you're going and do that twice a day, its a better deal than just paying fare.
cycling20200719@reddit
Agree. People realized police do not appear to be enforcing a lot of the non-violent offenses anymore ( either by choice or legislation ) so these behaviors continue and grow as others see that there is apparently no consequence.
Primary_Excuse_7183@reddit
Yes i see people run lights daily. and i agree with your point. sadly.
dplagueis0924@reddit
I think we will see more civil unrest as the population becomes more aware and knowledgeable on the wrongdoings of politicians and the ultra-wealthy while watching them walk away free from consequences. It’s small, anti-social behavior like this that will ramp up as time goes on unless everyone has to play by the rules.

It’s the instant gratification society that the internet created. We want everything NOW
Frederf220@reddit
This has been my theory for a while. Behaviors, not even necessarily dangerous but aggressive I'm hypothesizing correlate with stress. Creeping forward at a stop light, always having to be the one in front, aggressive jockeying for position when it makes little to no difference. The phrase "rat race" comes to mind.
Newton_79@reddit
Harbinger, Yup ! , that's a great way of stating that . The most dangerous time of day for you , could be Lunch ,! , just going to your fav, hamburger , & you # came up!totally senseless driving , right now . My city Does have all the camera , they still doing,

No, this is my thinking as well when I imply with, what the hell is going on these drivers these days. It's like these people hope something kills them, like some gamble that helps them cope with their reality

Riverrat423@reddit
That’s a great answer to this kind of question. I see a lot of this on Reddit lately, why are people driving fast or reckless . Some say it started with the pandemic but I see the pandemic and our political climate as combining factors that have increased our stress and aggression in society.

Roll through fresh red. Right on red after stopping. Straight on red when there's no street on the right. Left on red when they're both one way. Any direction on red when there's nobody in sight. It's called attentive driving.
Greenfire32@reddit
Close! It's actually called breaking the law.
Aggressive_Analyst_2@reddit
Rolling through fresh red is breaking the law, but you probably won't be ticketed if you don't cause an accident. If you're already passed the line (also technically illegal), just get out of the intersection on the all red phase. The one way streets rule varies by state, but states that ban it are stupid.

I’m a high school teacher. We have stopped giving out consequences for anything. You can swear at teachers, cut class, not do work. Everybody gets an A and nobody gets in trouble. We are creating a society where the rules no longer matter.
Best_Market4204@reddit
So why are you giving out A's for free?
cmacfarland64@reddit
I’m not. The young teachers are. Until you get tenure, you’re at the whim of your principal. When they tell you to pass everyone along, many do.
I had a kid 2 years ago miss 87 days in a semester. He wasn’t sick, just didn’t like going to school. The biology teacher gave him an A. I asked her about it because that’s insane. Apparently on the first day of school, he did the get to know you ice breaker assignment. She doesn’t grade things for kids who are absent. So he got a 100%. He never did a single biology assignment all year, but apparently he nailed the “get to know you bingo game”. It’s fucking crazy. I teach algebra. Plenty of kids fail my class.
Schools are forced to give 50% for assignments that aren’t turned in making it almost impossible to fail. Education is shit show right now. Go check out the teachers sub. There is wild stuff in there everyday. It’s awful.
Groson@reddit
This was disgusting to read and I fear for them when they actually try to get hired somewhere outside a minimum wage job
cmacfarland64@reddit
But we see it all the time. How often is your McDonald’s order wrong? You call customer service and get nonsense? You order something from Amazon and receive the wrong thing? These kids are already out there and employed already.
BOty_BOI2370@reddit
In all fairness those situations you describe, maybe besides customer service, are usually results of simple mistakes in stressful environments.
Groson@reddit
I said outside a minimum wage job
cmacfarland64@reddit

I was just t T-boned Thursday from a guy that pulled out from his stop sign, car was still drivable before I got to a shop to get it fixed. Monday comes and I'm driving with half the driver side of my car smashed in, get a green light, and I look to see this lady not slowing down. I put my hand out the window to signal to stop. She looks at me like deer in headlights, just keeps on rolling. This was a good 5 seconds after not only I got the green, but I could see her red from where I was. She did not care one bit. Had another lady yesterday blow a stop sign again, now with a rental, and she looks right at me and yells I don't give AF!
Whatever 🤷

It's only because they haven't been hit by a tri-axle dump truck going 50mph while running a red light, yet.

JennyAnyDot@reddit
We’ve had the same issues before. Expenses were lower but so was the income. But more people driving like asses. I think it’s due to seeing others drive like shit and getting views for it. Awhile driving being normalized?
Uxium-the-Nocturnal@reddit
I agree. I think there is an exponential effect. People driving like maniacs will piss some people off and they will drive crazier too because "f it, why not, everyone else is driving crazy".
Living in a big city changes your driving habits. Sometimes you have to be a little more than assertive 6 drive safely and/or get where you're going.
The biggest issue here is probably not all that I listed but just that our cities are growing so fast and the infrastructure just can't keep up.
Also, in my city, the vast majority are unlicensed and uninsured. That contributes to shit driving for sure.
Coyote8@reddit
It's people escaping declining cities for low rent ones in my experience. Before quarantine I only saw that behavior in LA and Seattle then I started seeing it out in the Midwest.
yaleric@reddit
Red light running became a lot more common in Seattle too, so it sure doesn't feel like a bunch of red light runners left the city.
alwyn@reddit
Why must there always be some justification or excuse for people's behaviour, maybe they are just crap people.

I'm not the only one noticing this. I'm ready for a licensing purge and harder tests
JakeBreakes4455@reddit
That will only work when people are taking the test and licensed. In Chicago Metro, a huge percentage drive without a license or insurance. Some are homegrown offenders and others are newly arrived.
ArtisticSplit8941@reddit
It's wild, but everyone that has taken the test isn't any different because it's super easy
JakeBreakes4455@reddit
Even with a license and test people will still drive like idiots.
spookysaph@reddit
yesterday morning I saw someone drive down the middle of 2 lanes on a 4 lane for over 100ft, switch lanes in the middle of a traffic light intersection, and then make a sudden stop for a few seconds before moving into the left turn lane at another intersection. I'm very surprised that they were lucky enough no cops saw them or that they didn't cause an accident
good_oleboi@reddit
I nearly got ran off the road the other day. I was on a VERY narrow road going around a slight bend with a double yellow. Some jackass had tried passing multiple people and a tractor on a short bridge over a creek. They met me head on just before I got to the bridge. Rather than get back in traffic they squeezed between me and the tractor
zacmobile@reddit
It's amazing the lengths people will go to to save 5 seconds. Then there's always people who will excuse this behaviour: "yeah, but I'll make the next light and save way more time, checkmate losers!"
good_oleboi@reddit
Literally risking their lives to save a few seconds. I'm no where near a perfect driver, I'll be the first to admit it, but, I'm never going to pass on a double yellow, purposefully run a red, or something else that's going to put myself or others at extreme risk
sterlling_rosewood@reddit
I wonder how much of this is 'monkey see, monkey do'...
Sure, most of us see this behavior and think to ourselves "wow, what an asshole", because we're not idiots. But I'm sure some idiots out there say to themselves, "Huh... he got away with that. Maybe I could do that too."

Nightwraithe@reddit
I'm gonna catch flak for this (and rightfully so) but whenever I'm on the motorcycle I'll do a quick check to make sure there's no cars coming from any direction, then I'll run the light. In my experience, traffic lights rarely register the fact that I'm on a bike and I'll spend several minutes waiting, sometimes the light won't even change until another car pulls up to trigger the signal.

Sometmes I'll run a red light if it's an intersection I've taken 100 times and its poorly timed (its literally red for 2 minutes and green for about 10 seconds, even though the busiest traffic time is a 70/30 split.) and sometimes it randomly decides that their will be no turning left, leaving you sitting for over 4 minutes and NO ONE is coming in any lane the entire time. My town is also currently experiencing a driving hellscape where people have just decided "this is a turning lane now. Left on red is totally fine. The speed limit is now 60mph on residential."
All because cops just don't pull people over for the small shit anymore.
Crowned_Toaster@reddit
I wonder what the cops in my town are doing. They're quick to pull people over who have an expired license plate. But they are very lenient on letting people drive through red lights, stop signs, and cutting people off. As if driving over the speed limit wasn't bad enough.

Cops are definitely not chasing down some big bust they're sitting in a parking lot somewhere right now talking to each other. They should have never been pulling people over for the small stuff. The idiot sit on the side of the freeway during rush hour traffic when nobody's speeding looking to pull somebody over. I'm "getting old" now but in my age I've realized that being aggressive on the road really doesn't save you THAT much time. Even if I'm 15m late for work and I speed the entire way pissing everyone off by cutting people off, etc etc... I save MAYBE 5m. Me saving FIVE MINUTES is definitely NOT worth putting dozens of people's lives at risk because I wanted to prevent a truancy mark on my record. I'd rather drive a safe speed and get to work alive and work my entire shift so I can pay the bill that need to be paid to support a family.
The young hardly ever look that far into the future. I know I didn't. But I agree... road aggression is WAY WORSE lately. So bad that there's road rage all over and the SAFE MOVE is to keep windows up, keep your mouth shut, let the enraged fucker take their rage out on your window and drive away so you can live another day. That dude will go home and have an aneurism eventually, not your problem.

Okay, I am one of these people. Here is my logic... que the angry karen... if there is no traffic coming. I mean, I can not so much to see a single headlight. Why am I stopped. -kayochan-@reddit
YEAH SAME. I thought I was insane, but I see people blowing through obvious red lights like theyre nothing nowadays. WTF has changed thats making people just say "fuck this red light, my life, and others!"
Jimbob209@reddit
I live in Sacramento. Every time you are at an intersection, there's a minimum of 3 cars jumping the red. Every single time. It's highly normalized to wait a couple seconds to cross when you get the green light
FoxCitiesRando@reddit
Yes. This is every single intersection in my area with any amount of volume, now.
Reddittoxin@reddit
Where I live it's bc the roads are designed horribly and everything is backed up everywhere. When you have to wait for 7+ light cycles, every single intersection, people get desperate and run the first few seconds of red knowing there's no real danger in doing so, bc all other parts of the intersection is just as backed up so you're not exactly gonna get in a high speed accident. You're just being a douche by taking someone else's turn.
Not condoning it, but I understand the frustration with the lack of infrastructure. They'll build 10k homes along a 2 lane road and say "figure it out"
FoxCitiesRando@reddit
Yes. Absolutely zero interest in facilitating the flow of traffic. I despise drivers these days, but I am not surprised at all. I have roughly a 5 mile commute through a couple of adjoining small towns and there are roughly 8 or so intersections that should be half stop signs but instead are untimed, uncoordinated lights. There is no rhyme or reason to any of it. I'm not surprised at all the people constantly run red lights in this area.
titanofold@reddit
It's the 10,000 homes, and not providing any infrastructure that could alleviate traffic.
Good busses with Wi-Fi, bike lanes, sidewalks, and placing things a bit closer together would help.
The closest grocery store is 5 miles from me. I can't walk there. I could take my bike, but there's no bike lane or sidewalk for me to use. The closest bus stop is 1.5 miles from me. I'm in a city. Downtown is an 8 minute drive (without traffic).
We're insisting everyone drives regardless of their ability to do so.
City planners are starting to see the trouble, but we need laws that forces home builders/developers to do better.
taarotqueen@reddit
I do see this with red arrows a LOT. Like 3 people will go after it’s already turned red.
UsernameIsTakenO_o@reddit
I got fucking honked at for not running a red arrow. It had already been red for the past 3 cars that went through.
MillennialMadMan@reddit
When people start left turn chains at the tail of red lights I just start slowly creeping directly into them. Make them cut the entire intersection short if they really want to run a red light that badly.
ArtisticSplit8941@reddit
Lol no I saw it happen the other night here with only 3 cars at the intersection
Bill_Hayden@reddit
The problem is, they'll start to do it everywhere. I live in a city that is supposedly notoriously difficult in terms of roads and infrastructure (I find this funny because I'm from England; I know small roads, and much, much stricter enforcement) and what happens is you'll get a couple of edge-case intersections that aren't well designed, like you describe. So people start doing dumb shit like banging red lights.
The trouble is, this practice spreads. It's the same with people rolling stops. Seen so many near misses from people doing shit like this I actually stopped riding my motorbike as the risk got too high.

Always make eye contact with people at stop signs and look both ways before crossing an intersection. Expect them to merge into you with no blinker or mirror or shoulder check. Expect them to be on their phones or high, hitting a weed pen. I lived in Oregon for 5 years and there are a lot of illegals that don’t respect us or our laws and hit and runs are extremely common. I heard about one guy that jumped a curb and ran over and killed a few homeless people sleeping in tents because the driver was drunk, high, and watching Netflix on his phone (not an illegal that I’m aware of; just an idiot). Expect these things. Even if you cause an accident, expect them to flee (ex-gf experienced that). Get the plate number right away. Take pictures or record video.
That same ex got stuck on a red light in Georgia one time and swapped lanes to get out of the way (didn’t look to her side, because the light was red; why would anyone be crossing? She side swiped a young black girl running the light. Light cosmetic damage. Her very negative stereotype of a mother showed up and was making jokes about axel damage and basically saying we’re gonna make up bullshit and take this little white girl for all she’s got. They’re now suing her for $500,000, a year later. The girl was 100% fine, joking and smiling during the report. She didn’t even realize she had been hit right away.
Expect these things… Everyone’s distracted. It’s just the way society is now, and it will only get worse.
DaveySKay2@reddit
I live in a place that has a ton of stop signs and lights and they’ve really just become suggestions. I can look out one of the windows of my house at a stop sign and I watch people cruise right through it like it isn’t even there all day.
They know that it is pretty unlikely they’re going to get caught. I’ve lived here ten years and have seen a cop car camped by the stop sign twice. It doesn’t seem like they care at all.
But this seems like a statement on society in general.

Early morning, around 5 a.m. I’m at a red light in my small sedan. Big truck behind me flooding my car with their extra bright headlights. So I adjust my mirrors to the side and up to reflect it back at them and let them see how annoying they are. They slam the gas go around me through the red light to go left into the plaza I was also waiting to enter. Douchebags who think they are more important than everyone else, is my guess.
TurnkeyLurker@reddit
I was driving on a 6-lane highway at sundown for about 30 minutes. I counted 11 cars that never bothered to turn on their headlights.
Other times the cars were dark colors and had their front really dim "daytime running lights" on and NO taillights. In a 65-75mph area, driving up on a dark car at night?
Clueless drivers not knowing the difference between the headlight options , or the default lighting set by the manufacturer is totally wrong for night driving?

People are morons. I look left and right before proceeding on a green light like we were taught in drivers education.
Over the decades of driving I’ve done I fell into the same ‘it’s green, go’ trap that is deadly now that people are ignoring red lights at every intersection. I look both ways at every signal light again.
Crazyredneck422@reddit
There is 1 intersection directly in front of my work, I drive straight thru the intersection and it goes directly into works parking lot. Every single day MULTIPLE cars crossing the intersection in front of me run the red light, like my light will be green for like 10 seconds but if I drove forward I’d get tboned. It pisses me off bc there is 2 lanes, the one i am in is for turning right, going straight OR left. The one to my left is for turning left. When there is traffic in the lane next to me I can’t see around them to know if the intersection is safe for me to proceed, so I have to wait until that lane starts moving to see if I can move forward bc if I don’t it never fails… cars fly through! There is a pretty long delay between their light turning red and mine green already so I just don’t get it! But i definitely made sure my dash cam is set right so if I do get hit, my camera will definitely show my green light… however it’s not gonna be pretty bc those cars fly through at 65-75 mph even though the speed limit is 40

I was going through the downtown of my little town today and came to stop at a crosswalk because there was old couple there and they started to cross. The car behind me decided they didn't need to stop in that situation so they just whipped around me and whipped through the crosswalk. Fortunately the older couple had gotten far enough where he didn't run them over. I honked the s*** out of him and I have no apologies.
And here's the kicker, he drove another quarter of a block or even less stopped in front of a restaurant with his flashes on and proceeded to get out and train drivers with his wife while he went inside I think maybe you could work. So then we got the green light and that car just sat there and sat there and sat there so long that by the time she started to move that whole lane of traffic me and everyone behind me missed the green light. So you whip past me to get about 200 yards ahead and then block the tire lane of traffic from using the green light by ~~parking~~ standing illegally. The restaurant was on the corner and all he had to do was pull around the corner to a less trafficked street.

I've seen that a lot in the past few years too. There's one red light near where I live that people blow through fairly often. One day I saw 3 or 4 cars go through it. There is no foundational respect for the morality and ethics that underpin the laws. The laws don't exist to punish offenders, they exist to protect innocent drivers who are following the law. The laws exist to facilitate the common good of all society.
But NO. "Its a free country. I know my rights! Give me my free-dumbs!" They feel entitled to speed and run red lights as much as they want as long as they pay the fines.

I don't think that the fines are high enough. 120 for passing a school bus? IMO it should be time in jail, too.

I feel you, i was in a bad accident two weeks ago. Was turning left an intersection oncoming traffic was highway with two lanes going 45 but really 55+. Was red for a few seconds and it appeared as if this was stopping but instead ran right through it and crashed. I wasn't the driver was in the passenger seat and it hit the rear passenger tired. Was very lucky to make it out of it alive, and walking. Still having deja vu over it, even though I was not the driver- have driving 20 years without an accident still freaks me out. Why not? They refuse to shut off their cars at pumps, too. Why have laws if they're not going to follow them.
LackWooden392@reddit
Pumping gas while the car is running is not dangerous. Why would it be? You're just putting fuel where there is already fuel all the time.
Frederf220@reddit
It's not hugely dangerous but it does pollute. Car fuel systems are pressurized and guess what happens when the cap is off. Also a dozen or more cars idling while fueling is a breathing hazard. You would not like to hang around a gas station where every person fueled while idling.
People are also pretty dumb/careless and accidents where cars would move unexpectedly would be quite high.
CodiwanOhNoBe@reddit
A: doesn't matter if it's dangerous, it's a law. B: it's not the gas you're worried about it's the fumes
JakeBreakes4455@reddit
It's the smokers at gas stations that are dangerous. Try to tell them that. Usually live and let live but when I see that I say something to them. Then they get pissed and don't stop anyway, so I cut my gas fill-up short and leave ASAP.
CodiwanOhNoBe@reddit
I've shut off the entire station when they don't stop smoking before. I get so tired of stupid people around here.
TankApprehensive3053@reddit
A) it's not a law to turn off the engine to pump gas, it's a safety request. B) the fumes while pumping will not get to the spark contained within the engine that is idling. If fumes can get to your spark plugs then you have bigger car troubles. I was a firefighter and arson investigator.

It seems like the last year or 2, I've seen next level insane drivers. Game overs are going to be bad for everyone.
unwantedrefuse@reddit
Forreal speeding and cutting off people switching lanes to get only two cars ahead. Its absurd
StilltheoneNY@reddit
It seems like some drivers just want to be ahead of you. I had someone pass me the other day in a school zone. He was ahead of me at the stoplight. Yesterday I went through that same school zone. It looked like I was the only one who slowed down. This was during school hours, too.
kannagms@reddit
I usually just look at the type of vehicle. For me, it seems like anyone who drives a honda civic or dodge ram are just the most assholely drivers. (Not all civic or ram drivers are like this, I'm sure, but I've come across a lot of idiots in one)
Civics are usually the ones weaving in and out of traffic, speeding like hell, cutting people off and brake-checking "slow" drivers (aka people going the speed limit or even 5-10 mph over the speed limit)
Rams are the ones usually riding your ass and getting visibly frustrated because you're not going faster, despite either going the speed limit or 5-10 mph over, but you're not going 95 in a 55 and that's what they wanna do and you're not doing it. And even though they can pass you, they won't for awhile. Just tail gate you, and If it's night, they'll flash their LED high beams at you, completely blinding you until you move out of their way, either with you turning, or if on the highway, you merge into the passing lane so they can pass you because for some reason, they won't use the fucking passing lane themselves. How dare THEY be expected to go around YOU.
Obviously, not all those who drive these cars are like this, and certainly others in different cars drive like this, it just seems to me every time I encounter a civic or a ram, they act like this. Also lately, there's been a lot of Rams doing the weaving, cutting off, brake-checking, and such. I suspect it's because it's a popular car with the newly licensed (based off my sister, a senior in high school. She says all her classmates want jacked-up trucks and a lot of them drive Rams, which is pretty accurate if I drive past the 2 high schools my hometown while school is in session. The parking lot in my day used to be made up of 2 or 4 door sedans with spoilers. Now it's a bunch of large pickup trucks parked so closely together, or taking up 4 spots, that I'm amazed anyone can get in or out.)

pan_rock@reddit
The whole point of running a red light is to get what you want.
Essentially, the light isn't as relevant as the fact that folks do this bc they can not control their emotions on a psychological level which makes them physically react , hence they are seeking that instant gratification by "running the red light". Regardless for the meta reason, maybe late for meeting (which brings about it's own physcological convos and why his brain allows him to sleep in and or procrastinate during times when he knows he shouldnt) , maybe he knows its his boss' last straw against him, or he's just mad.
Knowing it's more and more folks who can't control their emotions during their adult years is alarming, especially when we are lving in modern times where we are literally amongst the top 1% of humans that have ever lived to say we saw a sunset. Contrary to media and news, it has never been a safer time to be alive.

No red lights to run through. No one waiting at a red light when there is no traffic in the other direction. Only traffic volume is stopping the flow.

Those cameras aren't doing anything for traffic. Have you ever pulled up to one where there's a bunch of cameras and there's no opposing traffic and the light doesn't change? Happens to me all the time, those cameras aren't regulating traffic like they're supposedly there for.
DorShow@reddit
The only cameras near me are to ticket for red light runners, but mostly for turning right on red before coming to a full and complete stop for x seconds.
They dont control flow, that would be awesome if they did that, at least that’s a service.

Equivalent-Ant-9895@reddit
I'm convinced driving has become an extension of the "main character syndrome" that has taken over our society. Any inconvenience, such as waiting as a red light, has become wholly intolerable to some people that they're just going to do whatever they want to do to keep themselves happy, and to heck with literally everybody else. Perhaps they've even lost the entire concept of public safety: running a red light is obviously a hazard to everyone else near them, but they're willing to risk the lives of countless people just to save themselves a few minutes that would have been spent idling for the safety of all.
Will_send_pics-M-@reddit
Well me personally I drive a lot at night and there are a lot of red lights that change for no reason no one will be at the intersection 90% of the time I’ll just send it 🤷♂️ I ain’t waiting for it
Jumpman76@reddit
Exactly this. If I’m approaching light and it turns red for nothing, ie. There’s no cross traffic, I’m going.
At that point it isn’t on me for “running a red light”, it’s on the city for having that light programmed that way
SavetheneckformeC@reddit
We need more federal grants to police departments that are strictly used for traffic enforcement.
Hambone1138@reddit
How long do these lights stay red? There are some in my area that stay red for three or more minutes at a time, with almost nobody going by in the other direction. Sometimes you just get sick of sitting and burning gas for no reason and think “fuck this noise.”

No_Subject_4781@reddit
That's because those cameras that are supposed to be regulating traffic lights are actually just spying on people. We'll find out eventually what's going on with those cameras. I blow red lights all the time if the light doesn't change and there's no traffic.

Sounds about right. I'd say pretty much every day I see people that are turning left that are two lanes over in the right lane just cut across traffic doesn't matter who they cut off and vice versa. I mean I understand your turn coming up faster than you thought but why the fuck are you all the way over to the other side of the street when you knew that turn was coming? People got selfish and entitled and turned into straight up assholes out in the world. I say, let's do our best not to become one of them.
online_jesus_fukers@reddit
At least where i live there are 2 valid excuses sometimes...1. I think we're closer to the sun than anyone else (joking) because the way it glares down the main street in town early in the morning and in the evening you can't see shit even w the visor and sunglasses (I've seen cops accidentally roll the light if the suns just right) locals know if you're passing on the n/s streets at that time to treat it like a flashing yellow.
Fresh_Distribution54@reddit
Because they are super super special and they're super late because they couldn't be bothered to move their ass. And they're so awesomely cool that the law doesn't apply to them and if they get pulled over it's just because the cops are personally out to get them and they are innocent and perfect and super special
When you get a bunch of these assholes all living in the same place they sort of spread this infectious mindset to one another
M8NSMAN@reddit
I used to blow through yellow lights but as I got older I figured if I have room to safely stop that I’ll wait for the next green light, I’d rather get rear ended by an idiot not paying attention behind me than getting T-boned because I tried to beat a yellow light.
Honest_Piccolo8389@reddit
🤷♀️ I’ve seen a few semis drive through red lights on a busy intersection. My hack is to take backroads. Might take me longer to get to where I need to be but fuck it. I want to arrive alive!
tehdanerer@reddit
Do you live in NewJersey?
Sad-Refrigerator-839@reddit
I think it got worse after the pandemic. I'll be driving in Philly, roll up to a red light and have some dickhead come up behind me and lay on the fucking horn like he expects me to just fucking run it. Unreal. I stuck my hand out and like "what?" And pointed to the red. Dude does the same shit you're describing in a pissed off fashion like I'm the asshole.
TheBoss7728@reddit
Running a yellow light is safe if some dumbass adjacent to you isn't speeding towards the red light predicting it turns green and it does
Pretty_Fisherman_314@reddit
Yeah i thought people were assholes until I encountered a light that’s timing was fucked up went green to yellow for 1 second to red immediately. I had no time traffic camera even gave me a ticket when I went to court the video played and there was no real way for me to stop in time. I would have stopped mid intersection and caused an accident.
Dependent-Plane5522@reddit
If there's no traffic, I might run a red. Only if there's no one around though. I'm talking like Sunday morning at 7am. I absolutely don't do it while other traffic is around.
TooTiredToWhatever@reddit
In general driving gets worse in the fall, I have always assumed it was because it was dark later in the morning and earlier in the evening (most of the bad driving seems to be when the sun is low).
azgli@reddit
Only four? I see that every day at nearly every light on my commute. I've seen six cars blow the left turn red. No one smart enters the intersection when the light turns green without checking for red light runners. It's really annoying and we have a lot of red light running crashes.
Zippytiewassabi@reddit
There are times this is not ok and times it is. When I’m turning left at a standard light with no left arrow, and there is no break in traffic for me to complete my turn, I will absolutely go through the beginning of a red.
_TheGreatGoobah@reddit
Welcome to America. Have fun trying to find logic in anything people do here.
alwyn@reddit
Worse, they actually speed up to run a red light.
16enjay@reddit
Recently, in my community, a man blatantly ran a stale red light while doing way over the speed limit. Drunk, high, distracted, we may never know as he was pronounced dead at the scene. Sadly, he T boned an SUV with 5 young adults, all under the age of 20... one young man died at the hospital, 3 other young men are still in the hospital (2 very critical) and the driver (a young aspiring beautiful girl just giving her Brother and his friends a ride home) sadly passed away 4 days after the accident.
Why do people run red lights? Entitlement? Lack of judgement? Selfishness? Whatever the reason, it's got to stop!!
Do better people!! My life and the lives of those I care about are just as important as yours. Pay attention when driving. Put down the phone, don't drink and drive, don't drive while high..don't allow your friends and family to do this either.
We, the decent respectful drivers of America are begging you!
Waste-Soft-8205@reddit
bcz if nobody is coming what's the point of waiting at the light how I was taught to drive in the city lol
Fun_Kaleidoscope7875@reddit
Lol I work in viera Florida, these old bastards don't care about red lights, stop signs, or pedestrians, But why will run at you with a closed fist for doing 19 mph in a 25.
MrsEdus@reddit
During 2020-2021 I worked from 4am to 2pm, I'd leave my house at 3am and get to this major strip of road, 3 lanes and at the time of day the lights weren't on a timer, they were triggered by cars. Every morning, I swear I would be sitting at my red light to turn left and some sort of truck, fedex, ups, semi would run the red light, straight through. Not even slow down. It was surreal.
Itsnonyabuz@reddit
I am not saying it's right, but I occasionally will run a light deliberately. In my area synchronizing lights is apparent;y illegal, so going from one red light to another to another is the norm. It's really frustrating, particularly when there is actually no cross traffic to use the green light. So, if it's clearly safe, I will once in a while just stop, look and go.
Privatejoker123@reddit
It is insane the number of people I see just going through red lights, not even stopping at stop signs, not caring how close traffic is when turning it is scary out there. I always get nervous when seeing people pull up on side streets because a lot of them are coming up way too fast and look like they are not going to stop. It's crazy out there. gotta be careful and head turning to pay attention to all the crazies out there.
PraetorianHawke@reddit
It's been worse since Covid. They haven't faced any consequences from doing it so they will until they get hurt and/or hurt someone else.
AdSalt9219@reddit
Except in Philadelphia, where they've always driven like that. Demolition Derby!
DecentCheesecake9321@reddit

ColonelMoostang@reddit
Drivers in america atleast are getting worse. More and more big trucks and suvs on the road, less usage of blinkers, less obeying the laws of the road, and more aggressive driving. I have never been more uncomfortable driving on the road than I have been this year. Almost died in Cleveland last Thursday. Rush hour traffic and more than 5 people were driving recklessly through it. Swerving, no blinker, speeding while doing so. Normally I'm a stay left as I'm passing people but it was so bad with people swerving around that I parked my ass on the right and stayed a steady pace.
DarkISO@reddit
It was already bad but for some reason after the pandemic, people just got so much fucking worse. I also almost died a few weeks ago while at work doing a delivery, but then that was someone evading police but still. Blew by me as i was getting off the highway on a one lane exit ramp. If i was a few inches more to the left, you wouldn't be seeing this message.
megamanx4321@reddit
If there's no cameras or cops around they aren't laws, they're suggestions.
queefymacncheese@reddit
Im not proud of it but I blew through a redlight. Some dickhead decided to slow down to a crawl until the light turned yellow and then gunned it. I just followed suit.
Cautious_Parfait8152@reddit
No more traffic cops it seems. Use to see speed traps, traffic stops all the time. Seems past 5 years..no cops doing routine traffic patrolling. Maybe it's payback for hearing defund the police? Somethings up...
woafmann@reddit
Where I live, after 10pm, you can proceed through a red if there's no cross traffic.
umtih679@reddit
I have a couple red light cameras on my way home from work. Seeing the night sky light up when they flash a red light runner is glorious.
Amazing-Cover3464@reddit
Mine and my husband's cars were both totaled by red light runners. About 2.5 years apart. His was replaceable. Mine was nearing classic status and was not. It was only a month ago. I'm still sick over it.
yana-wastaken@reddit
yeah for some reason (at least in the US) every one is OBSESSED with getting to A to B asap, regardless of safety. Im a car lover so I will do a bit of bending the rules but shit like red lights are still an obvious no go. I dont get why people are so impatient, And maybe bigger safer cars in a sense give people the confidence to do whatever. Back when cars were all very slow you couldnt do this but alot of modern cars are quick to accel with good ABS etcetc which enable people to drive like pricks imo. Same thing with traffic that is caused by nothing. Is it really hard to drive a reasonable speed? And if not can we at least have some responsibility if not for others but for ourselves, it is rediculous
jesselivermore1929@reddit
They don't care.
Altruistic_Koala_122@reddit
I've noticed an uptick in aggressive driving when a new covid variant hit the area.
MostlyDarkMatter@reddit
In many parts of California blatant red light running is VERY common as is running stop signs and routinely going 20 mph above the speed limit even in the city. That blatant disregard for the safety of others is one of the main reasons I got the hell out of there.
537lesjr@reddit
I do see people running red lights but I see more people not stopping at stop signs more often where I live. I see people running stop signs multiple times when I am out. I see people run red lights maybe once or twice every few months. I saw a guy on a motorcycle just go on a red light while I was turning on a green light, he was lucky I was paying attention.
Due_Paper7562@reddit

ArtisticSplit8941@reddit
Our local police set up some people to cross crosswalks and see who stopped for pedestrians, and 60% of cars stopped for pedestrians in the crosswalk. I've been hit in one while on foot, and someone I worked with actually got hit on the sidewalk and passed away about a year ago.

eliiZmel@reddit
There's a light near my house whose sensors are very washy. I can stop in the same spot (I measure by how much of a sign I can see out of my passenger window) and sometimes it'll detect me and others it'll skip me 1-3 rounds. I've tried farther up and farther back, the sweet spot is very specific and it's still inconsistent.
After 3 months of putting up with it now I just run it when it's safe to do so.
TrishaValentine@reddit
Population densities have changed and the traffic patterns haven't adjusted accordingly.
If the city governments ever reprogrammed the lights to allow an adequate number of cars through less people would run them.
Holiday-Ear9@reddit
It happens at every light in our town and has been that way for a few years. When you have an unstaffed police force and the public is aware of that, it's like, "Who cares if I break the law?"
luvalicenchains1979@reddit
What gets me is that most cars ahead of me will be driving slower that molasses and then all of a sudden start speeding up when the lights turn yellow before red … so irritating
GryffSr@reddit
It's becoming a thing in Oakland and Richmond, California. Shitbags bypass the cars stopped at the red by going in the turning lane or the bike lane along the curb and then blow through the red. I always wonder if they know that they are wastes of oxygen and don't care, or if they don't have a clue.
Bee9185@reddit
They were posting some bullshit to Reddit
kalelopaka@reddit
It gets worse every year, it’s why they increased the time of light changes and increased the time of the yellow light and the time between one light turning red and the other turning green. When I first started driving the yellow light lasted 2-3 seconds and red and green changed instantly. Check it out next time you can see the other lights.
MotionDrive@reddit

land-of-green-ginger@reddit
in most neighborhoods in philly, people pull that kind of shit all the time. hell, i break a lot of traffic laws in the city. but in the philly suburbs, folks take that kind of driving personally. if you did what that cobalt did, you are getting angrily chased by the boomer you passed for 10 miles or pulled over and immediately shot by a bored suburban cop.

freecain@reddit
It's a lot of things combining:
People are driving more and more. The population is growing and average walkability score keeps getting worse. So multiply the increased number of cars by increase in mileage driven per person, and you're just seeing more people.
This also means more stop lights are being installed.
People are staying independent into an older age and Americans on average are getting older. That means your average driver is having a slower reaction time.
People are much more distracted with cellphones.
Pot being legalized has really emboldened people to drive high. Probably not a huge percentage, but it's there.
Bigger cars both take longer to stop.
Post pandemic, and with politics becoming divisive I think people are just becoming assholes. Plus, in most communities cops seem to do little traffic enforcement. Photo tickets just aren't enough of a deterrent for some people.
Zech08@reddit
Dunno, but people do it all the time in san jose. I know one spot someone did it and got t boned by the right of way traffic on... an expressway. Then you got all the inbetween streets where people just roll through stop signs and dont even try to yield at yield signs.

I don't go through green lights right away in my city for exactly this reason. It's almost guaranteed someone will blow the light and you'll probably get T boned if you go, or they'll move around you if you're at a red light. Last night I was cut off by a guy who was turning into a restaurant, but I had the right of way. Then he throws his hands up at me like I'm the idiot who can't drive 🙄

I saw one today. Didn't bother to slow, let alone stop, for the two seconds before the light changed. Literally two seconds, I counted.
