Two days for the ila port union to get a 62% raise. Drivers wth are we doing?
NitroBike@reddit
Yeah good luck convincing the average American that unions are a good thing. The same people getting upset about the dock workers getting a raise also probably think those same dock workers are lazy bums who are protected by the union.
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
Doesn't even have to be a union all we have to do is show them that we wont accept the bs 2-5 days of that freight not moving i bet they wise up quick. Then we can go back to pissing on each other tires for all i care
Seefufiat@reddit
Yeah that isn’t going to work if they know that within two weeks you’ll starve and that you have no internal unity. They can break individual drivers or court new drivers and the current fleet won’t do shit. If anyone showed up to scab at a union dock they’d get their asses beat, so it’s a different story. The dock union is also willing to strike for months or years if necessary.
Laffenor@reddit
I can't believe noone ever thought of that before. You just solved all our issues single handed!
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
Don't even have a cape on
NitroBike@reddit
lol yeah that’s not how a general strike works. The dock workers got their demands met because they have a union. Telling companies “hey we’re not gonna work for a few days.” is not an effective way to get your demands met. The lack of unions plays into this because people need to work to live. And since there’s a severe lack of unions, there’s no strike funds setup for when people strike.
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
You dont tell them shit. All they're going to know is freight wont be moving until pay increases across the board.
Mindes13@reddit
Good luck getting tens of thousands of mega drivers to stop work, let alone the million plus single truck owner operators.
Yeet_PC@reddit
The amount of people on different social media platforms absolutely shitting on those dock workers is unsettling. People are screaming for work reform, but turn around and call the ILA members entitled; it just doesn’t add up.
its_not_merm-aids@reddit
It's like a bucket of crabs.
NitroBike@reddit
Not to get too on my soapbox here but America is a very individualized country. Since unions for the most part have been thoroughly decimated, people are so willing to believe that people in unions are lazy bums looking for a handout. It’s really disheartening because I’m in a union and have coworkers who shit on the union we are in. Everyone thinks they’re gonna be the next Bill Gates. It’s so hard to work against decades of this propaganda.
dieselsauces@reddit
This right there. I have O/O shitting on unions but they cry they want the same treatment as unionized worker but without actual union while we're working directly for a mining pit and this year we took a hit to our pay at about average 30% less than past two years. Crushed aggregate went up in price almost a 100% within the last 3 years. If there's someone making money, it's corporations, they are feeding us BS so they can keep milking everyone of us until something happens. The longer we procrastinate, the more money they'll take from us. This shit totally blows my mind. We're going to strike or out of business by the end of the year
OldBrokeGrouch@reddit
People like to point to the downsides of unions. Yeah there are some issues like seniority being way too respected over competence. But the alternative to unions is worse I think. Way more downside.
HopeItMakesYaThink@reddit
Automation is taking over. Slow but steady steps to our own obsolescence. Same will happen to the dockworkers, this wasn’t a win as much as it was a stay of execution.
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
Exactly its coming and the mind set that it won't be us is even crazier. Its either get paid with ot now or be replaced in the future sure the 50 year old drivers wont have to worry but the young ones wont have a 3 mile career. The days of a truck lifer will be in the past
HopeItMakesYaThink@reddit
The future is automated. We think only the most unpalatable jobs will be replaced, forgetting that ALL jobs are unpalatable to someone. That someone only needs to find a way to automate our job and make it financially viable for our companies or our customers.
MagusoftheSnow@reddit
Wonder why January they are coming back the table. Xmas will be over and no need for so many bodies on the port. Heads are going roll I'm calling it.

New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
They start out 39$ thats 58.50 with over time pulse 44$ in a year
sudrama@reddit
Not possible with the deregulation making owner op possible and tons of mega carriers. The port worker can strike because PORT is fixed; They can't be moved to a new state or country like the auto manufactures did. Similar to that, companies can just shut down specific terminals like they did with Starbucks citing unprofitable (and they have every right to...the government can't force a company to stay in business . They might give fines). . Also East coast have 14 ports only easier to spread your word or show up vs...maybe 50 or 100 or more trucking terminals we have here in USA. I am just talking about megacarreirs OTR. There are union LTL and Ports here in socal but those are niches. Megacarrier OTR is too broad and turnover is so high that nobody really cares if the company goes union or not (due to them being just a starter company). With OTR you are never at your terminal always on the road...so how can we form a group. Trucking license is so easy to get that they can just start hiring people or calling in owner ops to continue the work left behind by strikers. It takes time to train new people operating the machinery at the ports. It is not a 3 weeks program and 200 hours with mentor thing.
ProperKing901@reddit
🧸 : one terminal of my company tried to unionize in St. LOUIS.. Owner threatened to close it and move it across the river to Illinois. Although to be fair, he treats us pretty good.. Raises are consistent and they profit share. The unionize attempt happened years before I got there.
Little_BallOfAnxiety@reddit

They tried to impeach him on false information, they’ve criminally charged him, they’ve tried to assassinate him twice, and yet they can’t get rid of him. Do you ever stop and wonder why? Maybe it’s not because he’s the boogeyman the left has portrayed him as, but someone they are afraid will uproot the corrupt system they have in place. People are waking up and realizing our government is destroying the middle class, while ensuring they and their super pac donors are getting richer.
TheFringedLunatic@reddit
They impeached him for fully legitimate reasons both times.
They charged him because he has engaged in criminal activities.
Both shooters had more connections to Republicans than anything else.
Now, go ahead and tell me shit I watched and read with my own eyes is ‘fake news’ or whatever nonsense.
Smprider112@reddit
I guess you only watch MSNBC and CNN huh.
TheFringedLunatic@reddit
😂 See, there it is. ‘Fake news!’ So predictable.
No. I watch C-SPAN. I don’t need talking heads to interpret for me, I can understand their words just fine.
Now, I’m going to guess you prefer OAN, Tucker, and possibly Parler for your news, hm?
Smprider112@reddit
Never heard of OAN or Parler, I get my news from independent journalists. SCNR, Timcast, Daily wire etc… I don’t need legacy media feeding me whatever their advertisers and corporate overlords want me to believe.
Zxynwin@reddit
Isn’t Tim Pool the guy that was taking money from the Russians? LMAO
Smprider112@reddit
Maybe read before you base your “information” from left wing talking points. The “russians” were funding a third party company that was then leasing various media groups content. So yeah, I guess he technically got paid by Russians, but not by his own doing and was actually the victim of a fraudulent use of his media as well as other content creators.
Zxynwin@reddit
So he was taking money from the Russians and being influenced to make content that the Russians wanted. Thanks for clearing it up. Great independent news sources you got there
Smprider112@reddit
Not at all, are you dense, stupid or just willfully obtuse? A third party company was LEASING his content that he was already publishing on his own, so they could re-upload it on their channel. He wasn’t creating new content for them. That third party company was being funded by Russians unbeknownst to the content creators.
Would you say Kamala Harris was funded by the Russians if it so happened money donated to her campaign came from them? Or is that completely different too?
TheFringedLunatic@reddit
You realize Daily Wire, Tim Pool, etc are far from ‘independent’, right?
You’re still being fed info by advertisers and corporate overlords, just a different group (and sometimes the same group still).
Smprider112@reddit
Then I guess no news is truly “safe” and why it’s a good idea to consume a variety and form your own conclusions.
TheFringedLunatic@reddit
Agreed but you will refuse to hear the other side and think critically or look into the facts directly. There is the difference.
WeHaveToEatHim@reddit
This guy doesn’t think the daily wire has a bias. He’s a lost cause.

Niche equipment, perfection every time you run a lane for a great customer. Year later, ask for a raise in the rates. Just like the longshoremen’s union. Ports could have said “fuck it, we offered you 50%, you don’t want it, here’s your pink slip, training a new staff”. A lot of the O/O’s take no pride in their truck, trailer nor their hygiene. And wonder why they keep running at $1.75/mile.
MajorHymen@reddit
What truck company do you know that has the same bargaining power? I guess maybe swift? I know my truck company has maybe 500 drivers. wtf is that going to do but just put my company out of business?

They'll offer more money before they just go under
MajorHymen@reddit
The reason their demands were met is because it is a huge company with a massive amount of workers. We don’t have anything like that in the trucking world. We would need to wait for some massive company to gobble up 75% of the other trucking companies first so that the concentration of drivers striking would actually do damage and said company would theoretically be able to afford the increase in wages. The issue is by the time something like that happens automation will be showing its ugly head.

So start it! Start with your local terminal. Be ready to not make money for the first few weeks to months as you are refused work for trying to Unionize. Also be ready for turncoats and spies to sabotage! You'll probably lose your family putting in the error needed to start a union too. But if you manage to make it work you will have done a great service for your local colleagues.

6year by that time you'll also see automated trucks which are already out ;doing simple local loads in 10-15 years they'll be on all loads. Lmao you think this is just a one industry thing you have got to be kidding
RoroZoro-@reddit
Automated trucks are not going to be doing all loads in 15 years lmao
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
Lmao they will be going into production by 2027. Its amazing to me that you seen companies outsource jobs to the middle east but don't think they're going to buy automated trucks. A quick google search will tell you that. I don't want to see you on reddit crying in 3 years I'm going to remind you of this post every time.
RoroZoro-@reddit
Automated trucks aren’t going to be driving through fields, or sand/gravel or tankers or specialized in 15 years dude, you need to update your medical card. Truck drivers aren’t going anywhere for a while. You’re getting electric and automated trucks confused lmao. You thought YouTube University taught you something but you’re flat out wrong.
MikeV2@reddit
I’m sure companies would love to buy automated trucks. That’s not the argument. The argument is that the technology is still not here to have fully automated 80,000 lb death machines on every highway. Hell the automated cars are screwing up all the time and that’s in good weather areas. Never seen automation handle snow or bad weather.
And all that is before you even think about the legal side of things. How long did E logs take to be mandated. How hard did government fight to NOT put coal workers out of business? Now multiply that by a million when it comes to people who would lose their jobs if trucks automated.
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
And you don't think it'll get better in 6-15 years ? Technology moves fast. There would be no 70hr cut off no 36hr reset those trucks will run 20/7 minus charging time
MikeV2@reddit
It’ll get better sure. But there’s more to it then that. Installing enough charging locations, getting automated trucks into the mom and pop locations, removing driver unloads and hand bombing the trucking industry still uses fax machines ffs. In 15 years will some loads be automated……. Maybe. Walmart DC to Walmart DC…. Maybe, if they are perfect and never in an accident. But trucking isn’t going away for a while.
I was told 11 years ago that trucking will be automated. Don’t go into trucking it’s on the chopping block. And every year people say “give it just 10 more years”.
Coodevale@reddit
Tesla still kills people with their cars after how many years of developing the technology?
New_Rough6200@reddit (OP)
44 as of june 2024 less than the 4000 truck accidents a year that cause fatalities. Look im with you i don't want them either but if truckers arent willing to stand up the industry will continue to take advantage of the ignorance
PhoenixSmasher@reddit
The difference here is that the ILA's restriction of labor will drive the incentive for automation. All the automation efforts in trucking are running into the harsh reality that because there's such an oversupply of labor/capacity, the cost of automating a truck remains way higher than paying a meat in the seat driver.
Stunt_Vist@reddit
Yeah great argument. Definitely worthwhile to completely disregard the rights of you and your peers just because oh no, my job will be automated at some point!!!!

It is impossible to unionize when the government allows one person operator in the picture compete with mega carriers. Even if all owner operators strike, the megacarriers will cover them and vice versa if mega carriers strike, owner operators will cover loads. To me letting owner ops is one way to union bust along with lowering standards for cdl drivers. In fact if you want to avoid union in any industry just let owner op “teachers, police, firefighters”.
lord_nuker@reddit
So block the entrance to the loading docks. I cant speak for US, but the rules here in Norway is that an non unionized person cant take over the work from one in an union striking. A former employer of mine tried this, and got hit with a mighty fine for it :)
tvieno@reddit
You're not allowed to block entrances while striking in the US.
lord_nuker@reddit
Well that sucks
Maleficent_Beyond_95@reddit
Less than 20% of the industry isn't going to cover a fucking thing. That is the amount of capacity that ALL of the mega fleets combined represent. 'Letting owner ops"? The government doesn't give a fuck about trucker unions one way or the other. Larger companies, represented by unions are not the key to higher standards for drivers. Single truck owner operators, when run properly, are far more efficient per truck than any fleet. They can also respond to market conditions MUCH faster than companies with multiple layers of management over the driver. Owner operators have NOTHING to do with "unions busting". That is IGNORANT. An owner operator IS management, being the owner of a trucking company. Who is that person going to organize against? Himself?

Carriers and shops will have to unionize one at a time over years to make progress.
The two problems that are the biggest obstacle, in my opinion, are the fact that most truckers I know think that if anybody makes more than them, wanting a raise is greed...and that most of the truckers I know need to feel superior to somebody in order to feel good about themselves. They work harder than the union guys, or they're better drivers (or human beings) than [insert favorite whipping boy immigrants], or, or, or...
You can't get everybody together if you can't get people to believe that getting together isn't demeaning, somehow.
