I'll mention something related to what the OP is saying - I find it very annoying at times when Reddit posters comment on something that they don't remember firsthand (in particular things I DO remember firsthand), only know through finding information on the internet, and then act like they really KNOW whatever that subject is despite not having the context of how or why it happened when it happened. This happens on sports subreddits pretty often. One thing I've come to understand as being very true is something baseball historian/researcher Bill James has said, which is to really understand something you need to understand the context of when it happened. Having actual information sources written or recorded at or shortly after the event(s) occurred often is very valuable because it provides that context. As I (we) get older, I/we have more and more context for those past events because we actually remember them firsthand (or in some cases have information sources from the time of the event), rather than just reading about them using more recently created information sources. Regarding what the OP is saying specifically, it really is tied to the fact a growing percentage of the population does not remember people or events that were notable when we were younger because those younger population cohorts (the people who act like nothing existed before 1990) were either too young or weren't born yet when those memorable people/events were prominent in our younger lives. It's hard to have nostalgia for something you can't remember.
