ASUS Zenbook S14 review and use after a week

I've had the Asus Zenbook S14 for a week and I thought it was about time to make a review on the hardware subreddit. We're talking about a portable, feather light , flat, and durable laptop. Anything from CPU heavy work to light GPU tasks run smooth on this device. I decided to purchase this model for graphic design, college, a travelling job, and for personal use. I'm always travelling for work so I thought this was definitely the best fit for me.
The S14 comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 256 CPU, and a Intel Arc 140V Integrated GPU. These parts enable me work smoothly and quickly. I'm able to render everything fairly fast and do some other light assignments on the side. I've never owned a laptop specialised in the work I do, so I've been so shocked at how easy it can be. So as expected with an expensive CPU like this, it runs like a beast, and the integrated GPU also puts up a pretty good fight.
[Style] I personally really care about aesthetics, I just want a pretty laptop when I'm out and about. It's thin, with a good looking aluminum chassis with little flex. The vents above the keyboard give it a little more character and the screen is plain gorggggeous. I've currently got the grey, but the white is DEFINITELY recommended.
The camera could be better though, it's 1080p and it picked up the colors accurately with natural light. That being said, images had a grainy background. Some details were kinda blurry, and for a steep price I think you could expect a nice touch.
[Screen and Sound] The 14 inch 3K HDR OLED display is soooo beautiful and the image quality is great too. It's really noticable that it's OLED, maybe even a little bit too much so haha. The colors are vivid and vibrant. I had such a good time rewatching arcane (can't wait for S2). It's a beautiful and big display with barely any borders.
The speakers were also super noticable, it's definitely not a priority, but these were so nice! I was surprised at how good the sound is. It is loud, the bass is great, and yeah... it just feels really great. Watching, working, or doing anything with this laptop that requires the speakers and being able to take advantage of the HDR display is a treat.
[Cooling and Battery] The Asus S14 doesn't stay hot for very long. While exporting videos it's quick, efficient, and the laptop might heat up while doing so, but the aluminum body bleeds the heat out super quick too. I found almost everything I've done with the laptop has not caused it to stay hot for longer than a few minutes. In fact, especially with the current weather getting cooler, the laptop is honestly ICE COLD whenever I use it on the go đ.
The battery for casual use on 60hz is about 15hrs long. Anything more depending will of course drain the laptop faster. I do like how it charges really fast and how the charger is also super lightweight, it doesn't have a typical powerblock so it travels like a slightly larger phone charger.
[Build and Ergonomics] The laptop is surprisingly slim and light and it's feel matches it's price. Its a great product, the quality is good, there is great air flow, and it feels like a top dollar product.
[My Experience] I love the laptop, it's so convenient and lightweight, has a luxurious feel even though it does get a bit smudgy with the matte top. It has a great battery life for casual use and is so portable. The touch screen is a great touch (haha) for someone like me. Other then work and college, I can still play my fave casual games (and sometimes test it's limits with Hogwarts), just dont expect to be able to run a AAA game since that's not what the laptop was made for.
[Model] ASUS Zenbook S 14 (UX5406); Copilot+ PC
Feel free to ask any questions or things u'd like me to test out!
Geddagod@reddit
This would definitely be a commitment so I understand if you aren't able to do this lol...
But can you run some valorant on it? It's the game I play the most by far, and I don't see it get benched that often unfortunately. It's a pretty light and easy to run game tbh, but I am curious of replacing my older 12900h+3070 Asus m16 laptop with a LNL one if I could still run valorant at 120ish frames.
Thanks.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Dont worry bestie, my brother is am aggressive valo player so I can make that happen for u. I've played it myself too but I just suck ass at fps's.
Geddagod@reddit
Thanks!

Sorry for the late update guys, I ran 200-300fps on range and 120+ on deathmatch. It can drop a bit on normals but not below 100fps for me till now.
Geddagod@reddit
All good.
Are these on high/medium settings? I wouldn't mind running it on low to get a stable 120ish frames. A couple LNL laptops also seem to have high refresh rate screens, though I'm not sure how the response times for their panels would look like.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Low definitely gave me the most stable performance. If youre someone who rlly cares about those few frames making a difference in a shot id def recommend doing that. Medium dips a little sometimes, which i personally basically dont notice, but I know more serious players do care.
Hazmatlegend@reddit
Yo do you have the updates for this yet? Also interested haha
kookiekono@reddit (OP)

joakimbo@reddit
Shouldn't be a problem at all. It runs overwatch at high settings with 90+ fps
hannopal@reddit
How does the screen handle ambient light / reflections?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
So it does glare, the screen is super reflective so especially on lower brightness outside it's basically impossible to see. However the brightness does go very high, and it's able to show a decent screen in an indoors situation. Outdoors it'd fare a bit worse I think.
dodli@reddit
If the screen didn't glare I'd buy it in an instant. I don't work outdoors, but even indoors glaring screens reflect ceiling lights, and windows. Such a shame.
StatisticianTop9559@reddit
I'm not sure but I think the problem is only with the touch model. There is also one without a touch screen
dodli@reddit
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Deep-Monitor5037@reddit
What is battery life in casual games, have you tried something older - Heroes of might and magic 3 or something other from early 2000s? Every reviewer try to kill it with starfield or hogwarts when more important (for me) is how it manages power in lighter tasks...
disasterly213@reddit
Hmm I'm downloading windows now it it's getting a lot hotter than the Snapdragon x elite I've had. Hopefully this is just having the laptop plugged in and installing windows. I'm too spoilt with ice cool arm chips.
Ace77X@reddit
How do find the relatively low key travel of the keyboard?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
I personally really enjoy it, it feels pretty satisfying and more responsive than my previous laptop.
Ace77X@reddit
Cool, thanks for an answer. You've spent two weeks with it, did any of your thoughts change?
ExtensionSociety8538@reddit
I got an Ultra 5 version 3 days ago. All is fine but when I press 'p' it appears twice (not very often). Have no idea whats wrong with that.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Oh that sucksss, thats probably a factory issue then. I hope u send it back!
venkatvy102@reddit
Is the laptop touchscreen?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Yes it is!
venkatvy102@reddit
How are you liking the trackpad? I heard itâs not as good?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
I havent personally experienced any issues. It feels pretty smooth to me đ
Brief-Stuff4389@reddit
Hi! Thanks for the impressions.Â
Do you have experience with the external display connectivity? Especially with high resolution on USB-C with DSC (4k120 or 4k240hz)? What is about the HDMI port? Can you use a HDMI 2.1 display with 4k120hz?
Thanks
Byteshow@reddit
Thanks for the info. When the fan profile is set to standard - what normal activities will cause the fan to run?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Standard its set to off, but it does turn on automatically. I personally put it on the balanced setting. As for when the fan actually starts running, for me it was only when actually doing work activities or smth. Think of when I actually use the CPU with rendering or smth or when I play games. For casual activities it doesn't turn on.
Dramatic-Lie-3024@reddit
Whatâs the Ultra 5 like? Itâs a lot cheaper but is there a big difference?
DaveyT33@reddit
You must have bought their marketing or display unit. Lucky!
Iâve had the new S14 for a week and CPU temp never drops below 60C even when idle. The fans (on all modes) are running always after 5-10 mins of the laptop starting. âWhisperâ mode is good, but of course youâre compensating with less power draw and performance.
I took it to Asus for inspection and they said itâs normal. Perhaps it is, but either way I think itâs a design flaw with how compressed everything is that air simply doesnât flow through well.
I canât return it my country since once you buy it, itâs yours⊠However the store I bought it from told me Iâm not the only one complaining to them and Asus of the same issue.
Byteshow@reddit
Interesting. I have the S 16 and the fans run often on normal mode when plugged in. The bottom gets hot under load. I thought the S 14 was going to be cool so I was planning to order it. Even the notebookcheck review said the unit was cool. Do the fans run when browsing?
DaveyT33@reddit
Yeah they run even when idle when youâre charging the S14âŠ
Basically, when plugged in, expectedly the laptop heats up a little more versus battery. +10 to 15c in this case. When it hits 50c the âlowâ fans kick in and itâs enough to bother me because they start at about 2800 RPM. Whisper mode is much quieter but Iâve noticed it struggles to cool off then CPU and it lingers around 6â-70c just for light workloads.
In any case, Iâm using the Experimental version of GHelper now and itâs a game changer!
Itâs let me set a custom fan curve and adjust some other power settings that reduce the heat overall. The custom fan profile is what Asus should have programmed the default modes as: between 40-60c the my fans kick in but gradually starting at just 1400 to 2400 RPM. Noise is unnoticeable at these speeds, and the best part is itâs keeping my CPU even cooler than before with the stupid loud fans kicking in after 50c.
Without GHelper I would have sold this model. But with it, itâs all really good and hoping I can get a good few years out of it.
Poscat0x04@reddit
I bought one as well intended to run linux on it but unfortunately the latest mainline kernel (6.12-rc1) does not support the GPU (the output mode is fixed at 800x600) so I returned it. It's quite suprising to me cause intel had a good track record for linux support. I also did not check for s3/deep sleep and I think I saw a ton of ACPI errors during installation.
wooptoo@reddit
Thanks for your comment. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Do you know whether this model has a 2280-sized SSD? I'm asking because the Lenovo Aura has a 2260 SSD slot which limits the expansion options terribly.
Poscat0x04@reddit
I did not check it personally (since I did not want to risk not being able to return it) but according to online reviews at the retailer it does use 2280 SSDs.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Ouuu! Thanks for the comment, that's so good to know.
Life_Acanthaceae_226@reddit
is it stylus compatible?
TroubleMakerLTU@reddit
I just ordered this laptop, it will be my main laptop for university, as my Lenovo Legion from 2020 is not holding for more than an hour and a half. will be getting from the shop this upcoming Monday. The battery seems amazing and the screen is great, any tips you or others have for setting up a new laptop?
genuinefaker@reddit
How's the battery drain in sleep mode? How much percentage does it lose per day while in sleep mode? All my Windows laptops have been very unreliable in sleep mode, and often, the battery is empty when I open the lid. It got so frustrating that I ended up buying an M2 MacBook Air.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Lemme test that for you tonight! I could leave it in sleep mode overnight to have a look on what it loses. For now I've only experienced about 50% over 8ish hrs with the display open, but if I'm understanding you right, it's really about to few percents (or more) when it's shut right?
Farfolomew@reddit
Eagerly awaiting your findings!
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
So 12hr is about 2% and 24hrs is about 5% battery drain!
Farfolomew@reddit
Awesome, thanks man. That seems about standard for Windows x86 laptops. I'm curious how the X Elite laptops do, I haven't really seen a similar study.
genuinefaker@reddit
Yes, essentially the percentage lost over 12 and 24 hours with the lid closed.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Hi! So about 2% over 12hrs and 5% over 24hrs with the lid closed!
Qsand0@reddit
...update?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
12 hours update is about a 2% battery drain, ill get back at 24 hours
Qsand0@reddit
oh, nice. Thanks!
ollidab@reddit
I'm having issues with resuming video playback after putting the computer to sleep. Can you check if you are able to reproduce? (all drivers and my asus on latest) So far I have to reiterate most of your points, the machine is great and I would be signing praises if it wasn't for this one abnoxious issue. As somebody that always has video playing in the background this is a critical issue for me.

kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Hi! I'll try reproducing this tomorrow, thanks for your input.
Ebb-Low@reddit
Is a 14 inch screen large enough? Torn between the S16 and the S14.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Oh I've enjoyed it as plenty enough. That really depends on your personal use. It was even a bit bigger as my previous laptop but yeah, it's aimed at being portable after all.
stassribnyi@reddit
Hello, thank you for the preliminary review. I would like to request some battery tests with moderate loads. For example, something running in the background that is not very intensive, but still keeps CPU load in the low 10th percentile. My field is software engineering, and I tend to keep many tabs open in my browser along with some Node.js projects running in the background, either natively or in Docker.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Sounds good! Over how much time from a full charge? I'll get to it sometime this week ish.

I'm torn between getting the new Intel Core Ultra or a MacBook. My main concern is the longevity of Windows laptop
From my past experience with Windows laptops, they tend to lag and slow down after 2-3 years
cguy1234@reddit
You could always reinstall the OS/apps down the road if need be.
tledrag@reddit
The price of ultrabooks is catching up to Macbook's so I will pick Macbook for the smoothness.
PMARC14@reddit
What was the last windows laptop you owned. Cause that was really bad when the laptops only had Intel dual cores for anything that wasn't gaming or workstation.
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Oh! Tbh I couldn't really say? I've owned mostly windows laptops and haven't personally come across that issue at all. However others could have a different experience.
I don't know how this laptop specifically would perform over time but I can understand how that's a pretty hard decision to make, especially at their price points.
Major_Hair164@reddit
Thx for the writeup! Does your unit exhibit any creaking sounds especially on the bottom chassis near the vents? Or when pressing the keyboard panel near the top? How about when opening or closing the lid?
I had the zenbook s16 which I had to return due to chassis flex/creaking so I am curious if these flaws carried over any to the 14inch version.
Also when playing games or doing any intensive work does the bottom of the laptop or keyboard deck get warm or even hot? How about when plugged in?
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the questions! My zenbook s14 doesnt creak at all! It feels really sturdy overal and I haven't experienced any weird sounds in all the spots you mentioned. I'm sorry you had to have such an unpleasant experience with your device, especially with these bwing pretty pricey, u expect better.
When doing intensive work I've noticed the temperature tends to go up and down. It does get hot (more on top than on bottom i think) but it also cools down rlly fast whenever you have a less intense moment in a game, or a pause on work. I think its mostly due to how lightweight and thin it is, it just seems to drain heat really well.
SheaIn1254@reddit
This is such an "awful" if one can call it such. Give us some benchmarks ffs
kookiekono@reddit (OP)
What benchmarks would you like to see on a device like this? âșïž I'm more familiar with gpu benchmarking but not so much with cpu!
