Let's discuss Jeremy Clarkson

I want to know what everyone really thinks about Jezza. Because the more I think about his accomplishments, the more I respect him. And seeing him say goodbye at the season 3 finale and the show finale, he is obviously the most emotional about this. Hammond and May have done this as a job for a long time. But for Clarkson it's his passion child, his life's work.
I think his TV personality hides a lot of who he really is. Like we see how funny he is, and often times hard-headed, but we do not see everything he does behind the scenes. As far as I know, he has been doing a lot of the writing, editing, and production work for a long time. It seems like the shows have been lead by his creative vision this whole time. Of course they have an excellent team, but it seems like he is the one they all look up to. And when you realize just how much he is responsible for, it's hard to see him as anything less than a creative genius.
Obviously Hammond and May are each incredible characters in their own right, and we could have a whole discuss as to why they are so special and successful. I just feel like Clarkson does not get the respect he deserves for his work. So what do you guys think about that? Agree or disagree? Do you have any insight as to the behind-the-scenes dynamic?
hbomb0@reddit
I'm going to miss him and the trio massively. I have a lot of great memories watching him and the gang.
Coggleton91@reddit
I recently watched Ben Collins' interview with Andy Wilman on Ben's YouTube channel, and Andy talks a lot about Jeremy and where they started and how they went about relaunching Top Gear. I'd definitely recommend it, it was a good watch
Jimmie-Rustle12345@reddit
Andy ‘paint me like one of your French girls’ Wilman.
15-99@reddit
Well it was filmed in Andy Wilman’s house hence why he sat like that.
hughk@reddit
That was excellent, wasn't it? It explained a lot of why things worked the way they did. It is a pity we haven't heard more from Wilman about the making of TG and TGT.
thedudefromsweden@reddit
Do you mean this one?
Coggleton91@reddit
That's the one, and the part 2 of course
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Just put it in my Water Later a couple days ago. Can't wait to see it
One_Marzipan_2631@reddit
First and foremost he's a tabloid journalist. That will show in anything he does and has shown even in his serious bbc documentaries. He's not afraid to push buttons and boundaries and never has been. He and willman are both silly boys at the back of the class fucking about. My guys. He's smart and stupid and intelligent enough to know when to apply what. Bear in mind if we've seen it he and willman edited it. Thought about it asked if it would piss the BBC off, said yes and did it anyway. We've never seen anything we weren't supposed to see and that includes the leaked eenie meanie miney mo incident. I love him for not pandering to snowflakes and I will.miss that down to earth reality. I can only.gope.clarksons farm goes on until he drops. I can't imagine my life without him. I'm not big on parapsychology but he is an exception. I wish him all the best. He is a force for good.
PlanetLandon@reddit
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Clarksons Farm was only ever supposed to be a 4 season project. That might change, but just know that the next season is planned to the the last
KnightsOfCidona@reddit
It was a one-off to start off with, that's why there's a year long gap between season 1 and season 2 - they didn't commission the second series until the first aired and found out it was success
One_Marzipan_2631@reddit
Repeat after me "Clarkson farms continuation is based on ratings and therefore cannot end. Upvote."
Historical-Mode5856@reddit
I'd be interested to know your thoughts on H982 FKL, coincidence or a provocative joke that misfired?
One_Marzipan_2631@reddit
O.k so there's two main camps and I'm neither. Dodgy plates? Implausible though possible. Unlikely they went out of their way to doctor it. HOWEVER! if he said he wanted a porche he would be presented with a selection of which he would logically have a choice such as colour, price or saucy number plate too good to miss. I would. Wouldn't you? I honestly don't think a purposely contrived situation would have been allowed by the BBC legal depth and so not aired especially in light of the events that took place. Everyone would be looking to cover their asses so I think they'd only make the play they did in complete confidence. So Clarkson was totally honest when he said it wasn't doctored. Any crucially mo one asked if he picked it out of a crowd for its plate. He just may be, the most devious bastard....in the world
Historical-Mode5856@reddit
Appreciate the detailed reply to my very leading question.
I think this type of provocative joke was very much in the mold of TG, but without complete proof I would go with 70% likely it was a joke that backfired. There are little hints that swayed me like this clip from 2010 focusing on license plates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbdKbpQCZBw , and this https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/jeremy-clarkson-might-have-broken-licence-plate-laws-on-top-gear-s-argentine-misadventure-9778399.html where the porsche changed plates while in Argentina.
CarsPlanesTrains@reddit
I mean just look at that second plate. Clearly an improvised piece of cardboard or something written to try and quell some of the flames.
Anyways to assert this was a backfired joke is somewhat ridiculous. According to Wilman there were only 2 928 GTs even for sale in the UK (very likely given the fact how underrated these cars were and still are compared to the higher trim GTS), only one seller responding which was this car. In that same interview TG Writer Richard Porter would go on and say the joke would be too subtle for Top Gear anyways, who (if they really wanted to stick it to the Argentinians) would probably just drive into Buenos Aires blasting God Save The Queen. This all (and a lot more) is echoed by James, who really explains it quite well.
Not to mention the fact Top Gear was cleared by investigations of any wrongdoing
And if that's not enough, "FKL" doesn't even mean Falklands. The 3-letter code is FLK. H982 FKL is complete gibberish just like any other license plate that you'd have to want to see
One_Marzipan_2631@reddit
I do qualify my statement with the following statement from my legal deapartment : in the event that I am wrong and the number plate was indeed tampered with purposely and with malice aforethought, "GO CLARKSON, GO ENGLAND, AND FUCK YOU ARGIE NATIONALISTS. THEYRE OURS. ALLWAYS WAS. ALWAYS FUCKING WILL BE. WE HAD IT BEFORE YOU EVEN EXISTED. WIND YOUR FOOKIN NECK IN. YOU FORCED US TO SPILL NEEDLESS BLOOD TO MASSAGE YOUR COLLECTIVE EGO. GOOD MEN DIED ON BOTH SIDES SO YOU COULD TRY TO HOLDMON TO YOUR FAILING JUNTA. FUCK YOU FOR YOUR SHORT SIGHTEDNESS. FUCK YOU FOR KILLING MY DAD."
ILL SAY WHAT NO ONE ELSE WILL.
Justan0therthrow4way@reddit
I’m sure that I saw something that the car always had that plate. I’m sure it would have been a happy coincidence that it did and maybe a researcher found it and sent it in the group chat saying like “look at this lol” and Jezza went for it.
Also there would be a million and 1 processes and things from the BBC. If someone thought it would be a problem they would have called it out.
pillowmanrox@reddit
what's the leaked incident you're referring to? been a fan since I was a kid and I've never heard of that one.
One_Marzipan_2631@reddit
Try you tubing "Clarkson miney mo" ill bet you it's there. I'm guessing about 2010. It's news not part of top gear. Look at sun co UK or similar...
EtherealMoon@reddit
Still the most insane "controversy" to me. "He mumbled the word, but it sounded too close to the actual word! What a monster!"
One_Marzipan_2631@reddit
Surely, if one is precluded from saying that word, by those described by that word, because your Caucasian, that is logically discrimination by a race, to a race. A racial discrimination as you might say.
WiggyDiggyPoo@reddit
Richard Porters book has it right, ask the average person to name a famous motoring journalist and most of the answers will be 'Jeremy Clarkson'.
People of a certain age have had Jeremy talking about cars to them for about 35 years, even when he wasn't on TV talking about cars he was proably on TV doing something else - his presentation of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" for example. Now Hammond and May both do other things too, and Hammond is probably the next one after Clarkson to have done the most 'None motoring TV' but JC is the one that has had the rather unending prescence on TV and mostly commonly associated with UK Motoring Journalism.
daxelkurtz@reddit
He's my Moo Deng.
Captain_Pink_Pants@reddit
Jeremy probably stands out as the most valuable player on this team, but I don't think they would have been nearly as successful as they were without any one of them. They each played such a unique role in the shows... Take any one away and I don't think we've got the magic.
As for Jeremy personally, I disagree with many of the things he's said and his volatility had an undeniably negative effect on the shows... but man, he is one funny dude... and he was exactly the right guy to play off Richard's naive enthusiasm and James' cynical intellectualism. These guys could have made a successful show about anything. As a car guy, I'm happy to admit that the cars had almost nothing to do with their success.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Oh yea he has his character flaws but so does everyone. And to be as creatively successful as he is and only have the relatively minor character flaws that he does is almost unheard of. That kind of creativity and work ethic can often times create major strife with everyone around it. He seems to be stubborn and volatile yes, but well loved.
curbthemeplays@reddit
Some far leftists hate his guts, but they’re no fun anyway.
0Scoot86@reddit
I'm a leftie and I don't hate him at all. He's not a politician so I don't have to care about his political takes, just him as a great presnter and very entertaining man
curbthemeplays@reddit
That’s why I said “some”! The real humorless types.
MachKeinDramaLlama@reddit
They were straight-up ass in season 1 of old new Top so-called Gear. James joined them for season 2 and they had figured out their fchemistry for the following 20+ practically in an instant.
Here is one of his first appearances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o73labyqQ3I
And here is what the news segment was like a year prior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAMP2xn4KS4
Trades46@reddit
Cars was something they all had a passion for but the real draw of Clarkson, Hammond and May was their chemistry and genuine friendship. They screw with each other a lot but you can definitely tell they care a lot for each other, and that is what really sells.

Roushfan5@reddit
I've said this before and I'll say it again: I'd be so happy if the Grand Tour continued with those three as a podcast.
Conversation Street and The News were some of my favorite GT/TG segments. They genuinely don't have to go around the world and do their crazy adventures. They can sit in a pub and chat about the weather and I'd probably listen.
7Stringplayer@reddit
Jeremy even speaks to his own volatility in the Q&A he did when the finale aired. Mentioned that was his most proud moment since they actually got to end it on their own terms and he didnt say or do something that took it away from them.
0Scoot86@reddit
I'm a leftie and I don't hate him at all. He's not a politician so I don't have to care about his political takes, just him as a great presnter and very entertaining man
FellaVentura@reddit
This post was written by Clarkson himself 😂
zackh900@reddit
Jeremy is a complicated, difficult personality. He can clearly be very rude, immature, demanding, and selfish. I probably would not like being around him very much because of these difficult qualities. I have a hard time dealing with stuff like that.
At the same time, Jeremy can be extremely thoughtful, observant, tender, and gentle, even more than James and Richard. Notice how on all of their trips, Jeremy is the one who always finds the right words and ways to truly appreciate the surroundings. He seems to really enjoy learning about places and people. He likes animals.
He is a fascinating person.
Roncar@reddit
I have a small anecdote that might give you some insight to support your theory, but for all three hosts!
In 2015 I was very lucky to work with the three of them on the Clarkson, Hammond, and May Live show in Johannesburg, as they had invited a driver that I was working with to take part in their show.
The day before rehearsal, we had a call in to be a part of their planning session. We arrived early to a long wooden table in the hotel courtyard, as a crew was dropping off their creative supplies: a stack of cigarette cartons, some legal pads, and a few bottles of wine.
The three of them arrived and immediately got into run of show. Who goes where, contingencies on cars breaking or a setup taking too long, pacing things for audience reaction... this went on for a good hour or more. They really cared about putting on a great show.
The thing that got me though, was the fact that they would do this again and again after every show, all weekend. They put in the hours to fine tune everything to max entertainment. My respect for all three grew even more after that.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Awesome story! Thanks for sharing! What great entertainers they all are man
Jesse_b23@reddit
All 3 of them, but mostly Jeremy have largely influenced (for better or for worse) who I am as a person. I grew up watching top gear and then the grand tour, pretty much my whole life.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Oh yes, they heavily influenced me. With any luck I can get my kids on them someday and relive the adventure.
lucash7@reddit
He’s living proof that semi-sentient orangutans walk among us. /j
igiveficticiousfacts@reddit
He’s a presenter and a damn good one at that. His job is literally to present a program to a targeted group or audience in a way that they will enjoy. Let’s not forget why he lost his job at top gear to begin with. He assaulted someone and didn’t lose a single fan over it. Instead in the wake of the repercussions of his actions, him and his buddy took his other two buddies and ended a program to basically make a carbon copy of it somewhere else. Don’t get me wrong I love the guy, he’s hilarious, and the chemistry between the three is almost never seen elsewhere, but he’s an actor
woodythecb8@reddit
Many years ago my old boss went to a dinner party and he was there.
In my old bosses words… Clarkson is an arrogant big headed c**t.
Not my words as I’ve never met the man (Clarkson that is, I obviously met my boss), but I can imagine some truth.
More-Investment-2872@reddit
Clarkson’s talk show crashed and burned. Clarkson’s Car World was good. Jeremy Clarkson Meets The Neighbours was good. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was good. The thing about history’s greatest raids was also good. These were all Clarkson solo projects which along with Clarkson’s Farm show how successful he is. The talk show was shite though.
Thatguy7242@reddit
Look at the way he glows about his kids when he posts. Look at the joy he displayed when Gerald came back to the farm. Look at the concern he had for May and Hammond at their incidents. He is a good man that just happens to have the faults of someone in his position of power, wealth, and influence.
meesersloth@reddit
The man is a knob but I quite like him- James May.
dman928@reddit
I think this is how we all feel about him.
Craneteam@reddit
The fact that they stuck together after the BBC fired him is the truest testament to their friendship
Gr1msh33per@reddit
More like Hammond and May knew which side their bread was buttered on.
AdmiralRiffRaff@reddit
That's a fair comment - TG worked with all three of them, and if the orangutan wasn't there any more, the show would fall apart. people watched TG because of them, not because of the cars. If they didn't leave with JC, they'd have been left in the dust as JC went on to do more successful things.
Think how much more popular Clarkson's Farm is compared to James May's program, and I don't even know if Hammond has one. They knew full well money lies with JC, though that's not taking away from the friendship they have either.
Gr1msh33per@reddit
Thank you, that was my point, but I've been downvoted. Clarkson Farm is great, I genuinely love it. James Mays stuff is a bit generic (travel, engineering) and Hammond has a series on Discovery called The Smallest Cog which is OK but unwatchable due to all the ad breaks. Whether people like it or not Clarkson was the driving force (no pun intended) and Hammond and May were just supporting cast.
Honestly_I_Am_Lying@reddit
I haven't watched Clarkson's Farm yet. I was waiting for TGT to end, but am excited to see Jezza in a new setting.
I have watched James May's other shows, and really enjoy seeing him as the lead on his own projects. The Our Man In series is good, so was Man Lab and Oh Cook.
I can't get behind Hammond as the solo lead on his own shows. There was one good one, but it wasn't good enough for me to remember the title of it. His other shows have failed to resonate with me.
Subtleiaint@reddit
I think the commercial opportunity was quite appealing....

The first episode when they all come together smiling is just such an emotion, i love watching that episode
flyconcorde007@reddit
Don't want to spoil that, but that wasn't the first episode they filmed for The Grand Tour. For whatever logistical reason, South Africa (episode 2 I think) was the first.
Panda_Panda69@reddit
Maybe they wanted summer in both the first and second episode. As, you know, months between like September and May are the hottest in South Africa, and they're the coldest in California and Portugal (where the first one was set). It could actually mean something, as the winter in Johannesburg is quite chilly (the average temp. in July is between 3 and 17 degrees C)

Just remember it is a foursome — Mr. Willman worked as the producer on TG, GT, and Farm, and is a school friend of Clarkson’s. They all four formed a company together that they dissolved at the end of GT. But if you add all that Willman did, sounds about right.
L44KSO@reddit
Wasnt he as well the bestman at one of Jezzas weddings?
Justan0therthrow4way@reddit
Probably both weddings. They’ve been best friends since boarding school and came up with the top gear 2.0 concept together. In fact he owned most of the rights to the concept until the BBC bought him out.
Dry_Pick_304@reddit
I wonder if he started his second best man speech with "Lovely to see you all again".
Justan0therthrow4way@reddit
This would be very British and I can see Jeremy laughing at this.

TacticalAcquisition@reddit
And let's not forget the crew either - a considerable amount of them came over to TGT from TG with the trio and Wilman. They've all been together in some fashion for 20 odd years.
deluxegoats@reddit
This is a big one to me, the number of people that left the BBC to follow over to Amazon hoping it worked out shows who jeremy really is
deluxegoats@reddit
If you find the pre-tg Era (mid 90s) shows on YouTube with clarkson, Wildman was the producer on those too!
Craneteam@reddit
I think the trio gets the credit they deserve but it's Mr Wilman who doesn't get the credit he deserves
hendrik421@reddit
Depends really on how much you know his opinions outside of top gear, grand tour and farm. He said a lot of things that make him an asshole, and there are a lot of people who dislike him because of that. That said, I don’t think there is anything truly scandalous about him, besides his work for the sun. I enjoy his content, but I have doubts that the resistance by the council for his farming endeavours was unprovoked
RegentNova@reddit
Watch Clarksons Farm. It shows just how much of a manchild he can be.
He still enjoys the small things, the tiny advancement, the slightest of achievement can make his day.
He can fight with Caleb, someone almost a third of his age, over the pettiest of things.
Then all goes to hell, the sheeps run away. AGAIN. Or the cows, and he suffers, stuff can break over and over and he still pulls through.
But when he loses a animal on that farm, that's heartbreaking. It doesn't matter, big or small, he gets absolutely devastated.
Man is as bright as a bag of rocks at times, makes dumb mistakes and makes stupid choices that bites him in the rear eventually.
But he's also incredibly dedicated and genuinely cares for others.
Thank you Top Gear, Grand Tour, everyone involved but mainly the 3 titans for letting us be involved in their shenanigans all these years.
Cold_Frosting505@reddit
I’m a middle school teacher in the states, grades 6-8, and Clarkson is the kid you love although you should hate him. He’s off topic, makes wild hyperbolic statements, has hard opinions based on emotion only, and craves the push back. He’s an adult who knows when life was fun and without care of repercussions. It speaks to some part of us watching them crash into each other the way we did in bikes and when we brake checked each other in our shitty cars. It’s sophomoric. It’s idiotic. It’s generational. And it’s beautiful.
ChrisBard@reddit
I ve read in one the books written about the shows that the reason the said most of the controversial or, lets face it, racist stuff they said on TG, was 'cause they felt like little kids in school giving the middle finger to the headmaster (BBC)
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Haha very good analogy! But I also think it is a unidimensional view. It is what I am trying to question by making this post. Because that part of him is what everyone sees on TV, but I get the feeling there is a much deeper character behind his TV persona.
GreyThumper@reddit
I’m curious what Clarkson’s real personality is though, since he’s really hyping up this character that he’s created. Out of the three, he’s the only one who truly annoys me because, as James May has said, he’s such a knob. But it makes for entertaining TV.
CommentFightJudge@reddit
He has views I don't exactly like, and he's acted in ways I would write off others for, but I do think he's exceptionally charming and talented - and funny - and that earns him a lot of goodwill with viewers. You don't see his beliefs and his biases bleed into every aspect of his being like you often see with American entertainers, either. Not sure if it's a cultural thing, but there aren't many conservative Americans who don't make that into 85% of their personality.
I'll miss him, but not for long since I still haven't watched the farm show...

There is Clarkson , the man who has a history of violence, of racial slurs , Super Injunctions to hide his tax payer funded affairs, employed by and friends with the Murdoch phone hackers and who created a situation to get sacked so he could ( he mistakenly thought) take Top Gear to Amazon for mega bucks and Clarkson the cunt . So yep he’s a cunt.
52nd_and_Broadway@reddit
He is the most emotional and he speaks emotionally. That’s what causes him to get into trouble on occasion. He’s openly himself.
It’s not a bad thing. We all think, say, and do things impulsively on occasion but we don’t have cameras broadcasting it to the far reaches of the earth when we do.
I don’t agree with all of Jezza’s opinions and I honestly think he can be boorish and overbearing at times, but I appreciate his unapologetic honesty and his desire to appreciate the world around him.
In a world of carefully crafted media personas, he’s just Jeremy Clarkson. Love him or hate him, he’s not trying to pretend to be something he isn’t.
But the man genuinely has a good heart and he cares when it matters most.
proxima987@reddit
Damn, this is well said. I completely agree 🫡

Jeremy gets his due, especially with the success of his side projects and be voted most sexy for a rotund late middle aged balding bloke. His obvious writing talent is long documented and obviously he’s also quite accomplished in his voice overs, a bit of acting, his humor sensibility, etc etc. He’s tremendously gregarious when he wants to be. He’ll have a broadcasting career as long as he wants one. I really enjoy his work on the farm and find myself watching every little clip and promo he decides to put out there. A surer bet in entertainment, there aren’t many more accomplished than Jezza.
HockeyGuy601@reddit
Some people prefer to have a subordinate role in their own shows. In TG/GT's case Mr.Wilman was the one issuing the challenges, even though Jeremy and I'm sure with input from Richard and James, were part of the planning process. Another example on British TV is Taskmaster. Alex Horne created the idea for the show and is the main writer but is the assistant to Greg Davies who is the Taskmaster when televised.
PARADISE_VALLEY_1975@reddit
The trio would have been great for Taskmaster in the peak of their popularity/ their prime. They still are, it’s just even more unlikely they’ll be guests than it already is haha.

He exists and was the fear of all production staff. He was known for throwing phones at the wall and what he really liked to do was put his fingers on the monitors. He would really make sure he would squeeze his finger down so the editors could see exactly what he wanted.

He's done maybe 5 to 10 interviews the past 6 months. He's very similar in temperament to Jeremy since they had similar upbringings etc. but I think he's just as passionate about all this as they are. He really is the 4th Beatle, which he talks a bit about in one interview.

Mr. Wilman was to Top Gear / Grand Tour what Terry Gilliam was to Monty Python :)
snart-fiffer@reddit
I highly doubt Willman was issuing challenges with out them knowing before hand. There has to be entire production teams in place, permits pulled, local leaders bribed and insurance companies notified before hand.
You forget how great those guys are at acting. They make it seem like they didn’t know because they are so natural at it.
They are also the stars. Stars have so much power to say no. You don’t risk one of your 3 leads holding up $500k of money already spent because they don’t like the surprise. You get their buy in before hand.
Film production is so hard and complicated and expensive to begin with. You iron out all the wrinkles before hand by eliminating all risk you can.
Kind-Ad-3609@reddit
Watch the documentaries he did on WW2.
AdmiralRiffRaff@reddit
Honestly, he's a brilliant presenter and a great person to watch on telly. He's done great things like raising awareness for the direness of farming in the UK.
But.
He punched a producer because there wasn't a hot meal waiting for him, just a cold one (this is why he got fired from TG). He wrote a disgustingly misogynistic diatribe against a woman who he'd never even met, he's constantly toed the line with outright rasict comments, he's a proud tory, and even his own daughter condemned his behaviour publicly on instagram.
I'm sure he's learned a few lessons in his time, and I expect a lot of his racism, misogyny and inexplicable hatred of millenials is just a gimmick for the camera, but he's done so many bad IRL things that it's concerning.
Love the shows, don't like the man.
Blackadder_@reddit
Here’s the thing about Clarkson: He’s a great entertainer. I’ve read all his books as a fan. However, his political views are a bit odds at each other. I can understand as a life long petrolhead would have issues with EVs. However, if you look at last 2 episodes of Clarkson’s Farm and all the farmer’s plight he was sharing, particularly about the risks as a farmer.
He never ONCE acknowledged nor mentioned climate change, instead insisted on govt subsidies. Though not explicit, he is also Brexiter.

He has consistently been in favor of the EU, mainly because it makes doing a show like top gear and the grand tour easier https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/16/jeremy-clarkson-david-cameron-my-gut-says-stay-in-the-eu
CharacterUse@reddit
Clarkson has never been as anti-climate change as people think, a lot of the stuff on TG/GT was jokes for the audience.

alrightla@reddit
He was fairly explicit about being a remainer. remain campaign
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
To be fair he has been in farming for four years. Earth's weather patterns and temperatures take decades of change for it to be notable. Government changes much quicker in comparison.
DoraDura0@reddit
He’s like a granddad I wish I had
confidentclown@reddit
He seems like the driving force behind the shows success, he apparently was the one who came up the specials and the guests for star in a reasonably priced car.
While he’s very opinionated and vocal in his beliefs, which is not to everyone’s taste, he does know what it takes to be successful.
I also imagine he’d be a laugh down the pub, some of his stories would probably beggar belief
ozziey@reddit
Nice fella, a bit too much rightist for me, but would hang out with him.
Nimjask@reddit
Of the three, he's the hardest one to get a read on for me. Hammond just seems like a really down to earth, funny guy who I'd get along well with if I met him irl. May can be a boring, grumpy old man, but I wonder how much of that is him exaggerating it for the camera and I've been told by friends (as an introverted, southern English long-haired guy) that of the three he's the one I'm most like myself.
Clarkson is a seasoned journalist and part of that job is to say what you think will generate readership and lasting interest, even if you don't believe 100% of it yourself. I think he can be a bit abrasive and I certainly don't agree with some of what he's said and done over the years - I'd probably be a bit nervous meeting him irl. But the Grand Tour and especially the farming show have shown more of what he's actually like, where he's been able to do things his way and you can see the passion and care he has for it all.
MyCatIsAFknIdiot@reddit
Watching him tear up on his farm when the piglets died confirmed to me that he is a damn fine human being who plays up his persona for the tv
The three of them just worked and made good tv.
GreatBelgianWaffle@reddit
My opinion he’s a good who has the feeling that his passions are be taking away.
He’s a car lover but with the climate problems and changes hé had the feeling (like many car lovers) they taking away his passion.
It’s the same with farming. The climate changes and the thousands of rules are ruining farmer. Farming is losruk generation by generation it’s a way of living. And all these people have the feeling they will lose their passion, pride and hobby/work.
They are so vulnarable to people like Farage, Kennedy and crap fake News because they don’t want to lose what they’re passioned about.
But he’s a good men with a golden heart. I think he just has too cool down with his politic stuff and enjoy life more. It’s time to enjoy and maybe within 5 years get back to Drive Tribe with May for a 2 weekly podcast about cars and put Caleb as ceo of the farm.
Makeitquick666@reddit
He's a child in an adult's body. He is funny and very passionate about the things that he likes, say, cars or now farming. He also likes poking fun, sometimes if that's not the wisest thing to do. I do think that he means well.
The stuff that he puts on The Sun looks like that of a teenager who never really grew up, just grew old. I mean of course those columns are his and thus should voice his opinions, but he does seem/sound like the type who unknowingly puts his opinion first and can be inconsiderate of the people around him. Though that could equally have come from his upbringing. I remember reading somewhere that he had a rather well-off upbringing. He doesn't come across as arrogant or anything like that, but yeah.
His balls are not as big as his belly, I'm afraid. Whenever shit went down, he was always the first of the trio to back down, while it's usually Hammond staying behind to help May.
I mean he's human, with all of his flaws and good traits.
Naiehybfisn374@reddit
I like him and agree about his persona. I think though he'd be pretty insufferable if he didn't have the ability to be the punchline and to properly make himself look stupid.
Someone, maybe Richard, said of him that he is obsessive about storytelling and he and Wilman are always considering the narrative angle. I think that helps him to be able to be the idiot if the situation calls for it and that he is able to do that's admirable.
PilotBurner44@reddit
I think he's the greatest presenter/entertainer of our generation. He knows how to make stuff entertaining, and his farm show is a great example. Farming isn't overly interesting to the vast majority of people. There have been many farming shows on TV over the years, and none of them come to mind or ever made it even remotely close to famous. Clarkson's Farm is as big, if not bigger, than The Grand Tour. He managed to make farming interesting, fin, and emotional to millions, including city dwellers who couldn't care less about the countryside or farming.
Also, as you said, he does a lot more than is shown and he is considerably smarter than he lets on. At the same time, his TV personality isn't fake or something I'm completely different than himself, instead it's just him slightly exaggerated. Sometimes he can definitely be an asshole, especially when he punches people, and his remarks about doing poorly in school and still making it big aren't really helpful, but all around he definitely makes the world a better place.
scorpy1978@reddit
In a world where every politician from every country survives by false promises, twisting the laws, and demonizing the minority for the results of wring actions of the government, he is a breath of fresh air. Even though that breath might smell.
ruski89@reddit
One of the greatest entertainers of all time
pac4@reddit
He’s a storyteller and presenter on par with Anthony Bourdain.
Mclarenrob2@reddit
He has his faults but don't we all.
DanielBWeston@reddit
If you watch Clarkson's Farm, it shows a different side to him. I think he, Hammond and May were playing caricatures of themselves on TG/TGT.
kickit1@reddit
american POV: he’s your really cool uncle who’s hilarious and a great hang but unfortunately loves trump
Environmental_Bus507@reddit
I watched a bit of Top Gear and all of Grand Tour. I quite liked all three but thought Clarkson is a bit daft! It wasn't until I watched Clarkson's Farm that I started appreciating Jezza! Man is a gem.
edogawa-lambo@reddit
He’s real funny most of the time, and real cringy some of the time. Idk, I really try to avoid glazing any of the hosts.
QTsexkitten@reddit
I really like Jeremy and his work despite a lot of what he believes.
He's funny and he's a good entertainer and I can separate his work and his art from his beliefs. Much in the same way I enjoy John Lennons or Eric Claptons music.
Jeremy comes from privilege and believes his world view to be the only correct one and I think he lacks a lot of empathy, but he is still sensible at times and much of his observational humor is still funny.
His advocacy of farming and it's difficulty while simultaneously not being an advocate for climate change is some really interesting cognitive dissonance, but that doesn't ever stop me from loving Clarkson's farm or TG/TGT.
I like the guy, but I can see where some don't.
Phoenix_Kerman@reddit
I don't know how you could say he comes from privilege. He grew up in a bog standard area of a lower income ex industrial city with both parents solidly working class.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
His mom created the Paddington bear and he started as a salesman for his parent's company along with his dad. He did have a nicer house and go to some upscale schools but I wouldn't consider him rich.
Phoenix_Kerman@reddit
yeah, he didn't come from a rich background. his family were still solidly working class and you don't just get priveledge over night. it's a multi generational thing. it's more than just having more money than your neighbours it's a matter of social mobility and having connections.
alrightla@reddit
His parents were very wealthy and he went to Repton School where fees are currently £36k-a-year. That’s fairly privileged.
Phoenix_Kerman@reddit
as far as i know there weren't very wealthy. they were solidly working class till they had a lucky break when he was young and were licensed making paddington bears. i don't think being a few years on from a financial lucky break means someones from priveledge.
i don't really agree with the idea of priveledge but i'd say it's a much more long term thing across multiple generations than that
Mustang_29267@reddit
His witt is something that I will always admire and miss going forward. He's the epitome of the saying "enjoy what you do and you'll never work a day in your life". Well done, sir.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Honestly, and he and the others clearly know they have the best job of all time
Historical-Mode5856@reddit
Clarkson has an extraordinary talent for making interesting TV and I don't think there is much doubt he was the dominant force behind TG becoming a world-wide success. I would be waiting with anticipation for any new show with him behind it.
He is a very creative type though and clearly can be volatile/difficult to be around
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Absolutely but the volatility is an absolute given highly creative people. I would call him one of the most creatively successful people alive, and given that he is relatively tame compared to how difficult some creative people can be.
bingold49@reddit
He's in the top 3 of people I most want to have a beer with.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
I hope the other 2 are Hammond and May😂
SkunkApe425@reddit
I think you’re spot on about his whole tv personality bit. It really shows on his farm show. There are moments that get captured when you see how much he truly cares about the important stuff. Not just the fine things in life, but the actual quality of it, for not only himself but those around him and his community.
secretagentarch@reddit (OP)
Yes precisely. Clarkson's Farm shows a different side to him. I love how it is shown too. One of the many reasons that show is as wildly successful as it is.
OptimusMatrix@reddit
I just saw an interview with the 3 of them on LADBible's YouTube and Jeremy was unsurprisingly food conscious when they were giving them a bunch of processed stuff. I really think he's evolving as we all are and it's been really fun to grow older with them.
Curiously_sensible@reddit
He’s got to be one of the most intelligent entertainers of our generation. He’s very particular about not being a sellout and that his opinions are his own, which isn’t the case for a lot anymore. True old school values, a clear work ethic and just so glad we’ve been able to see as much as what we have
PlanetLandon@reddit
Clarkson seems like he’s quite the asshole sometimes, but as you implied, I think he’s just very emotional (the good ones and the bad ones).
StretchinPa@reddit
I feel this article from Clarkson offers some insight if you haven't read it before.

Unusual-Historian360@reddit
I love him. I think he's one of the best TV presenters of all time. He can be crass and argumentative but he's silly and has a good heart.
Even without Hammond and May he's still amazing. Clarkson's Farm being proof of that.
Flat_Entertainer_937@reddit
Jeremy is very passionate and emotionally driven. He’s also pretty smart, but I think his hormones get in the way (I’m very sympathetic). TG/GT was his childhood dream realized, and despite his Britishness, it’s really clear he gets to let his inner 12 year old out. I also love Farm, where you still see his passion and humor, but he’s more of a grown up. To me they’re two distinct sides of the Jezza coin.
Taeles@reddit
Jeremy is a hilarious and fantastic story teller. He is also behind the current “PG” and politically correct times which often gets him in trouble for the little jokes he makes and articles he writes.
As a GenX, the man is a treasure. Same with James and Richard.
los_blanco_14@reddit
Shit stirrer. I like him. Hell of a personality in fact.
GivenLoud@reddit
Good dude at his core. I think he was crying at the end not because he would miss the adventures - I think he's going to miss his friends. All of the people who've taken the ride with him over the years.
JDMWeeb@reddit
He's an insufferable oaf
HostageInToronto@reddit
I love his work, but his political schtick gets annoying. He still is one of my favorite media personalities of all time, and I hope he makes more documentaries (the ones on the VC and Brunel were great).
awetsasquatch@reddit
Love him, my sense of humor almost perfectly matches his so I crack up laughing most of the time.
ts405@reddit
i only know him through tg/tgt and bits of farm, and i like to see how he turned from being a cynic (i think part of if it was an act to begin with) to a more thoughtful and respectful dude
Allatura19@reddit
Genius.
