Ryzen 7800X3D vs 7600X3D (vs 7600X/7700X/9700X)

Hi everyone.
Short form: 420 Euro 7800X3D or 300 Euro 7600X3D (paired with RTX 4070 Ti Super)
Other alternatives could be 200 Euro 7600X / 270 Euro 7700X / 370 Euro 9700X
Long: I'm upgrading from Ryzen 5 1600 / GTX 1070 to AM5 / RTX 4070 Ti Super. Because of the currently high 7800X3D prices I'm considering getting a 7600X3D instead. However I've noticed a lack of discussion and benchmarks about the 7600X3D. From what I've seen the 7600X3D is pretty competitive when it comes to value. Average 10% less gaming and 20% production performance at 25% lower cost compared to the 7800X3D while also being more power efficient. It seems the main drawback of the 7600X3D is that its performance is too close to the 7600X which is a lot cheaper than either of the 3D CPUs.
I have mixed feelings about the 9700X but upcoming AMD updates and B850 platform might lift its performance to 7800X3D level.
So... is it worth compromising on the CPU or just go for the 7800X3D anyway? Both are within budget and I'm already making a bad financial decision by getting the 4070 Ti Super instead of the 4070 Super lol. But I imagine my GPU will be the bottleneck before the CPU so I might not have to overspend on CPU.
Probably important side note, while I do play GPU intensive games every now and then I'm generally more leaning towards CPU intensive games (Anno, Paradox games, FFXIV) and I'm also occasionally using Lightroom/Photoshop to do photo editing.

7600x3D is still a rare CPU so not much discussion, not available in the US, for example. Games love 7800x3D not because of 8 cores but for x3D, 7600x3D would be virtually the same.

Micro Center carries 7600x3d. I just built my system around it because the price point was too good to pass up. With their bundle I got the 7600x3d for $180 usd. So far happy with it. In bencmarks come in around 10k on time spy cpu test. My i7 14700f was around 13000-13500 on time spy. Overall time spy score actually increased with the 7600x3d over 14700f.
AssociationFew5322@reddit
I found the same deal but also a bundle that includes the 9700x for the same price what would you recommend? Is a better option gaming?
Gradon23@reddit
Sweet late reply. I would always suggest x3d for gaming. If you need more multi threading then go with the X
xVx777@reddit
would you say the upgrade is worth it for me? currently on i7 11700f, looking to get 7600x3d tomorrow.
Madgamerz22@reddit
What gpu did you pair with it?
Gradon23@reddit
4070 tis, aero

I'm thinking of building this exact system. I just picked up a MSI 4070ti super expert for $720 and I'm thinking of doing the microcenter bundle. I'm currently on a 5600x 3060ti. Should I do it? Help me spend this money lol
Commercial-Nebula-50@reddit
Are you talking about the $450 bundle? How did you get your 7600x3d for $180 usd??
Gradon23@reddit
It was bundled with mobo, ram, also military discount so my cpu was 184, ram, 94, mobo 151, I believe I’d have to look at my reciept.
Relevant-Band673@reddit
Lucky you, in Germany 7600x3d is 300 EUR. I’m considering 5700X3D on cheap AM4 board.
Commercial-Nebula-50@reddit
Thats how much it is here in the US as well!
Fantastic_Battle_346@reddit
ich wurde in 2024 eher auf AM5 setzen
Darlokt@reddit
Generally I would recommend the 7700x in your case. It’s 5% slower than the 9700x but 100€ cheaper. The x3D parts are nice, but due to the disappointing 9000 series their price currently is way too high.
I would generally not recommend the 7600x3D as 6-cores nowadays is a bit low and the consoles also run on 8 cores, why we have seen a bit of a push into better optimisation for 8 cores and beyond. With some nice PBO overlocking your 7700x can quite possibly outperform the 9700x out of the box and even the 7600x3D. The 7600x3D is a twice cut down processor SKU with significantly lower clocks to go with it as expected(also why the supply is so low). The 7700x outperforms the 7600x3D most of the time in normal gaming scenarios, where the game is not so small that it can completely sit in the x3D cache (like in Factorios benchmark) which is something that never happens outside of benchmarks.
Also don’t put hope into 9700x performance increasing in the future drastically, the architecture has the performance improvements AMD wanted, but they are not used in games etc. But in datacenter scenarios. The new Motherboards won’t make a difference in the performance of the CPU and will be just more expensive.
Also games you mentioned are simulation heavy games which benefit from more cores to do the simulation on, where the extra cores of the 7700x are of way bigger use than the slower but equipped with higher cache cores of the 7600x3D.

The 7600x3d CRUSHES everything. (I have one)

In that case would you recommend the 7700X over the 7800X3D as well? I was originally considering the 7600X3D because it seemed like a slightly downgraded 7800X3D which seems to be widely considered the best value gaming CPU in terms of performance as well as power efficiency (electricity is somewhat expensive over here).
So if the 7700X is a viable alternative to the 7600X3D would it be a good alternative to the 7800X3D as well? If it changes anything I do play on a 144 Hz 1440p monitor but tbh I'm not sure if I can the difference between 144 Hz and 60 Hz if it's not a side by side comparison. Also my current CPU lasted for 7 years so I'm not planning to upgrade within the lifetime of the AM5 socket.
Gradon23@reddit
Not sure what you have available but bang for the buck, 7600x3d is unbeatable here in the US. I bought one for $184 usd. Gaming benchmarks were overall better on timely than 14700f, cpu benchmark was quite a bit lower than the i7 but overall gaming with everything else the same went up, I havent even tested it with Overclocking yet
Ericzx_1@reddit
Kappa chungus deluxe $184
Commercial-Nebula-50@reddit
How did you get one for that cheap!!?? they are microcenter exclusives
miyuu-@reddit (OP)
It costs 300 euro in Germany, that's almost twice the price. At under 200 euro I wouldn't even think about it and would've just bought it.
Darlokt@reddit
At its current price and with your GPU I don’t think the 7800x3D is worth it for you, especially with stuff like Anno you will way easier hit your GPU limits in large scenarios rather than your CPU limits. x3D is a tradeoff between frequency and cache. In general compute a x3D part is generally worse than a not x3D part, but it can mask inefficiencies in the algorithms etc by providing the extra cache. This is why the x3D performance generally is hit or miss and why Intel for example can stay competitive in gaming benchmarks even though they have way smaller caches, as their cache management is way better. For future proofing of the platform everyone can only guess. I always like to build a PC that is balanced in the now, because we don’t know how games will develop in the future.
rocklatecake@reddit
7700x beating the 7600X3D? Huh? The fuck are you talking about? The 7600X3D slaughters the 7700x in gaming performance and efficiency, it's not even close.

Most benchmarks are run on 3D games like RPGs or Shooters but not on simulation heavy games which I play a lot. Nobody tests performance on a Stellaris run 40 hours into the game or a fully built map in Cities Skylines.

Gamers Nexus do benchmark Stellaris.
miyuu-@reddit (OP)
Nice find!
However in that exact benchmark the 7700X performs roughly 6% under the 7800X3D and across all benchmarks PC Games Hardware did on the 7600X3D it averages around 9% under the 7800X3D so the 7700X does seem to perform better at least for Stellaris.
AssociationFew5322@reddit
what would you recommend the ryzen 7 9700x or 7600x3d for gaming?
miyuu-@reddit (OP)
I have to wait until mid/late November. By then either AMD somehow manages to release the 9800X3D which hopefully pushes down 7800X3D prices or I'll go for the 7700X instead.
Fantastic_Battle_346@reddit
Ich habe den 7600non X mit Bios-PBO mit einer radeon 7900gre(OC), welche ungefähr einer 4070tiSu entspricht. Warzone läuft Problemlos mit 180+ fps. COD Multiplayer 200+ Zusätzlich spiele ich viel Simracing; ACC 150fps, Iracing 140fps, Automobilista2 140fps und Rennsport 120fps. Alles auf hoch/episch in 1440p 16:9 bzw. Simracing 21:9
Preisleistung kaum schlagbar, Eventuell 7500f noch aber ich hab gerne onboardgrafik falls die Graka stirbt
raydialseeker@reddit
Did you also consider a direct upgrade on AM4 to the 5700x3d ?
The_MacChen@reddit
my plan exactly lol. currently rocking 2600x :O
miyuu-@reddit (OP)
I'm on a B350 motherboard so I probably have to get a new one anyway.
rocklatecake@reddit
If I was buying right now I'd get the 7500F. 150€ is an unbeatable price and it can be easily upgraded to an X3D at some point when the prices have gone down again while still getting good performance for the time being.
miyuu-@reddit (OP)
It's pretty hard to sell used parts around here and I doubt the prices for the X3D will drop by over 100 Euro or a potential 9800X3D being better value than the 7800X3D. I'd rather buy once and not bother with it again for the next 5-7 years.
rocklatecake@reddit
Never had issues selling hardware in Germany. Is that not where you are? Just assumed because there are only two countries that have the 7600X3D available and only one of those uses the €.
Up to you. I paid 360 for my 7800X3D last year, so seeing this thing at 400+ again is just absurd. The 7600X3D at 300 is better, but obviously still too expensive. Just wouldn't even consider these an option at those prices.
miyuu-@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I'm from Germany. I did sell some parts in the past but it took a lot of time finding a buyer. Most people that buy parts tend to look for higher end parts and rarely midrange parts. At least that was my experience.
I have to wait until mid/late November anyway because I'm preparing for a 4 week trip next month. Maybe if the 7800X3D drops below 400 in a Black Friday deal I might snatch it.
rocklatecake@reddit
If your asking price isn't unreasonable you'll sell most things within a week or two. That's always been my experience. Recently sold a 3070 Ti and had someone pick it up a bit more than a week later for asking price.
Seems reasonable if you have to wait a bit anyway. The 7600X3D doesn't seem to be selling well (only ~240 units sold in nearly 3 weeks) so hopefully at least that one will drop a bit. Never seen a good black friday deal in my life though so I wouldn't bet on that.
