Is it weird if I (M37) give my dad flowers on fathers day?

He lives alone. Doesn’t see my bothers that often and me only a few times a year. He’s 66, retired and he does love gardening so the flowers isn’t the issue, rather the gesture I’m questioning. I asked a couple of friends and they all said It was a bad/stupid/“bit gay”. So I thought I’d ask the general Reddit population on their thoughts

Reddit is slightly different to the real world, I feel it would be pretty normal for a group of lads to call someone gay if they got flowers for their dad. Not in a horrible way just in a piss taking way. My dad would definitely look at me twice if I got him some flowers

Using “gay” as an insult directly demeans a group of people and implies that gayness is wrong and weird and bad (doesn’t matter whether you mean it like that or not, the effect is still the same). “Prick” doesn’t insult an actual group. Not homophobic, but sick of hearing about the LGBTQ community all the time. Go and listen to Douglas Murray and Julie Bindel, they are gay and yet believe that this whole movement is ridiculous and narcissism at it's finest. People are getting sick of hearing about this subject as it's constantly shoved in their faces, particularly by large corporations that actually don't give a shit but are just trying to stay relevant. You can still hold some level of racist/homophobic views or act in racist/homophobic ways without joining the KKK and picketing pride parades. Some people choose to be blissfully ignorant of the effect they have on others, like that person you’re responding to. They remain somehow (presumably intentionally) oblivious to the knowledge that their bigotry harms people. I think it comes from a sense of both stubbornness to change (and admitting the wrong they’ve done) and guilt because they already know it’s wrong, so they double down.

I don't know any gardener's who are touchy about cut flowers, after all, flowers on the plant eventually die and get removed anyway. However, the idea of a plant he can stick out in his garden is perfect, and something that he can look at year on year. Plenty of gardener's I know have plants that have moved down the family etc.

A waste of money? I've heard people say that they don't like them because they don't last very long. A waste of flowers? Most of them are commercially grown, they aren't being stolen from nature. I've always been a big believer in cash. Best gift on the planet. It's not about sentimental in my family, it's about money in a card. That right there shows them you care. I don't understand how people complain about cash having no thought put in to it, yes, I put thought on budgeting the amount I gave you. In general I do agree with a bottle of something over flowers, however in this case I'd say a potted plant would be just as good, since he's a gardener. I don't feel like giving flowers is gay or anything, but personally I'd rather receive a bottle or some chocolates.

Oh no, I'm sure some fathers would like flowers, but more would prefer the potted plant. I can't normally eat chocolate (diabetes.. and I don't cheat) so my wife will often try to find the sugar free variety for me. Pro-tip: Hospital shops have an epic range of sugar-free treats. I wouldn't get upset with a bottle of Molton Brown bath/shower stuff either. I don't expect any gift from my kids for fathers day anyway. Giving flowers isn't gay!

My wife, then girlfriend, sent me roses when I got into my first job. No one had ever sent me flowers before and it was the best gift ever. For a decade now in every milestone and occasion she sends me flowers and it’s honestly the best. No need to be stuck up with gender roles etc.

Flowers that are cut? Nah I don't see the point. To clarify I don't ever see the point in that. I stopped doing that at least a decade ago when I realised what I was actually doing. Sending dying flowers to someone to make a company some money. Nah... I started to give plants after that. Plants that could grow, instead of die on a windowsill. Herbs and spices are great for general stuff and to mark special occasions like fathers day or mothers day etc, I like to buy mainly fruiting plants. It's definitely something I (a father) would prefer to receive anyways. But neither is bad or wrong. Ur friends are immature btw and seem to care waaaay too much about their fragile egos. Either way just being thought of and having a phone call is more than enough. If u want to purchase something on top, then I would either ask what he's lacking or would want in terms of gardening as that could be far more practical, or I would surprise him with a fruiting tree that suites his garden/environment.

I've bought my dad flowers before - sunflowers. He's loves them. And at 55, said it was the first time he's ever been brought flowers. Flowers for me are sign of friendship, love and appreciation. Also, I get my dad different wild flower seed packs. He loves it and it's now included in some form in every gift I give him. you can even buy cards that have the seeds embedded in and plant the card.

No. When my dad was dying of cancer I would bring him his favourite flowers each time I visited. I was 33 at the time. They died quickly because he was too sick to take care of them, but I always bought a fresh orchid and some lillies to have near him to look at

If you know it'd be something your dad would appreciate then fuck what anyone else says and get yourself some 'better' friends. Having said that, as your dad is a gardener then something for the garden, which will continue to grow and flourish, may be a preferred option. Or an indoor plant, again something that will continue. Him indoors wouldn't have an issue with flowers, he enjoys them as much as I do, but both of us prefer our flowers in our garden. Something for the bees and butterflies to munch on.

I'm the same age as your dad..I too love my garden. Personally I'd really appreciate a plant/shrub for the garden from either of my son's, (watch it grow, remember where it came from, etc) but on the other hand a bottle of single malt would go down well, quickly followed by "Ah, you shouldn't have bothered, honestly lads" then hide it from the wife.
