Our rent has only gone up £25 since we moved in two years ago, and it was cheap then. I think next door is about £300 more a month than us. And he fixes things as soon as we ask him to. Then again, we have single glaze windows and a wooden front door that doesn't close in winter. It's a draughty house in desperate need of renovation, but cheap enough that we can save for a mortgage.

Houseshare I lived in had a great landlord. He’d involve us in all design or purchase decisions for the house, as we were the ones to actually use the stuff. For example, he wanted to redecorate the living room so asked our opinions of furniture, we helped decide wallpaper etc. Any maintenance he sorted almost immediately. He took pride in the house and keeping us happy as tenants. Rent was so cheap too (although this was a several years ago, before prices went crazy).

I’m so happy about my London landlord (I know it feels weird even typing these words). He got awarded during his lifetime for his work towards affordable housing in east London so I guess he’s just a decent individual per se. I manage to pay a super decent price, he never upped it, he is responsive and even paid to get the flat partially re painted.

I lived in a house share years ago, four of us, we all looked after our own rooms but the landlord came once every two weeks to clean the shared lounge and kitchen. She said it was her way to say thank you for us paying rent on time and not causing problems

It's not really about 'good and bad' landlords. It's the system they inhabit and propagate, which essentially prevents people from owning homes by virtue of landlords having enough money to buy it and rent it back out for a profit. It serves no other purpose than to generate profit for the lucky few from what is a fundamental human need.

Private landlords are not a necessity. It should be a human right to have housing, not left to the market. Glad to hear you have a nice landlord, but we shouldn't have to rely on nice people to provide shelter for us.

Similar. I easily pay £100 less for our flat than anyone around me. The flats where they’ve ripped out the kitchen (and installing a new one in a cupboard) and then transformed it into a second bedroom (often leaving the boiler in the bedroom) are easily £300 more minimum.

For a couple of years I lived in a property where the landlord did any repairs and maintenance in a timely manner, and kept the communal hall and garden in good condition. Though the fact I view those quite basic acts of just competently doing their job as making them a 'good landlord' probably says more about all my other landlord experiences!

Indeed. The average quality of service offered by private landlords, in my experience at least, is such that just doing the bare minimum and not being a dick about it is all that's required to feel like a good landlord.

Current one is low maintenance Cypriot bloke, pretty friendly. He's semi-retired so I don't see him often. He also started out as a restauranteur, which is how he ended up owning the property, so he's not some opportunist, BTL parasite. If something breaks down it's sorted more or less immediately. He also refused to jack up the rent to reflect the insane prices for this area, partly because he owns the building outright and presumably because he prefers long term, reliable tenants like myself. I wish he was still more involved in landlord duties. He used to consult us on new housemates before moving in, make sure we got a chance to meet them. Since he handed the reigns over to a property management agency, they've continually foisted horrible, boring, arrogant yuppie cunts on us. Current lot are OK though.

Pulls up in his brand new BMW to the third or fourth house he owns to do the end of tenancy handover with me. At the end he tells me I shouldn't be renting and that I should get on the property ladder. Yeah thanks Garry I'll try.

I live with my landlord. Luckily we get on well together- can watch TV together without awkwardness. He sorts issues in the house. He's mostly tidy. And I'm being undercharged compared to houseshares in my area where I'd be sharing with like 3 plus people. Win win

My current one is pretty chill, lets HMO rooms for well below market rent as she doesn't want to deal with shitty tenants and this way she can choose. Last one was pretty chill too, place was let below market rent as they managed it themselves and didn't really need the money. Weird layout and low ceilings as it was a flat conversion from a large house meaning you got a lot of space for a one bed flat. getting the deposit back was super easy too and they ended up chasing deposit protection so I would get it sooner. Shitty one used Belvoir as the agency, they were all about chasing as much money as they could and wanting it to look like a fresh new build without doing any maintenance.

I never had anything but good landlords. One was a bit twitchy to start with because the previous tenants were fucking awful, but as long as you show respect to them and the property we never had issues.

Lived in a semi-detached house where the landlords were next door. They'd made a gap in the fence so they would come round and do our garden regularly. Mr Landlord was rather obsessed with gardening. After begging him not to mow the lawn early on weekend mornings, it was brilliant. They invited us to parties and all, too. Next guy owned and had done up a whole block of flats. Didn't allow disturbances. When our fridge died he brought a replacement within 4 hours and swapped all our food over while we were at work (tbf he was in the middle of redoing his kitchen and needed to get rid). When a bunch of students moved in and kept having wild parties on weeknights to 4am, he read them the riot act. After the other 11 flats all complained, they disappeared within a week. I like to think I'm a decent landlord. Tenants have stayed for years and recommended the place to new tenants.
