Why do posts get frozen/archived on reddit?

Off-topic I know, but how many of you out there get annoyed when you find a given post on Reddit, only to find there's no longer any way to respond because the thread/question has been locked or archived? I don't understand why this happens. Not all of us find a given thread during the limited window that it's open for contributions - many questions remain legitimate years after they are posed. I don't understand why we can't keep adding to or refining knowledge or whatever on these topics. Surely storage limitations can't be the reason. Anyway, perhaps I'm just shouting at clouds.

I was aiming the question at the general 'sysadmin' community to gauge whether this particular reddit feature bugs them. I understand it's not really something relevant to sysadmin as a sub. Happy to delete the question if it's not suitable.
