Is upgrading your Cpu as simple as pulling it out, putting in the new one, applying thermal paste (if needed) and closing it up?

Iam considering upgrading my Ryzen 5 2600X to a 5600 on my pc but this was given to me as a gift from a friend (who also owed me $$$) and its served me very damn well over the years! But I want to upgrade the CPU as well as the GPU but unsure how easy or simple it will be.
Edit: I KNOW TO CLEAN THE CPU AND COOLER AND REAPPLY THERMAL PASTE! I SHOULDVE MENTIONED IT, IM JUST A NOVICE AT PARTS COMPATIBILITY
Im a novice at this so please treat me kindly
Msi b450 carbon motherboard

You forgot to set bios to optimized defaults, then turn on xmp, save and exit.

You'll need to update the BIOS version on the mobo to support the new CPU. Do that before removing your current CPU.

What if i'm building a new pc

Then it depends on whether the motherboard's BIOS version when it was sold to you (assuming you're buying brand new) supports the CPU.
If it does, your new PC will start up nicely and you're golden. If not, you will run into issues. Then it depends on what kind of motherboard you have. Some (usually the high-end ones) allow you to flash (update) a new BIOS to the motherboard using a USB drive. Otherwise, you will have to get into Windows (by borrowing an old CPU that is supported the current BIOS), update the BIOS to one that supports your new CPU then change to the new CPU.

Something worth noting, also, is that some motherboard manufacturers have "bridge bios's", so it's not always as simple as flashing the latest bios. You may have to update the bios 4 times to get to the current one.

I've never had to do 4 times, but I did have to do it twice which was a huge pain cuz I had no idea this was a thing and was so frustrated it wasn't working.

I had to bridge bios 8 times on an ASUS MB. Was a bit of a pain, but once you do 2 or 3, the rest go fast...

Just got a new CPU and the guy at Microcenter you don’t need thermal paste for the newer CPUs? Is this true?
