I’ve gained a lot of insight from this group and would like to contribute any knowledge. Beyond basic first aid and stabilization, wound healing is a complex process that can go downhill quickly. People tend to think you can slap a bandage on something and it magically gets better but that’s not always the case. Feel free to ask any questions that may help you gain any clarity.

hi! i have a question about a wound, healing, time and how it might feel/affect one at a certain point in the healing process.
context; im wrting a story and a background character is a boxer. he gets in a car accident and sustains a decent laceration on the back of his hand and forarm of his non-dominant hand. my plan was to have him try to fight and train at 6 weeks post accident and be able to box but not comfortably. after sparring with a friend he decided hes not ready for an upcoming big fight...is this realistic? would the wound be uncomfortable at 6 weeks but healed enough that it isnt crazy he would try to get back into training? like i said he doesnt have to actually be healed enough to be ready for the "big fight" but should be healed enough to attempt jumping back in the training ring. is 6 weeks a reasonable timeline for this? also how deep would be realistic? epidermis? dermis? etc.

I have a new skin graft (3 weeks old, bolster removed 2 weeks ago). Almost from day 1 it has been mostly covered with a yellow rubbery covering. When I keep Vaseline on it the edges can be gooey but very well adhered. If I let it dry some is can get quite hard. My mohs surgeon doesn’t seemed concerned when I went back on for a look see last week. Instead of keeping an eye on it she told me to come back in 3 weeks. I have never seen anything that looks like a skin graft but the wound isn’t infected and is shrinking. It now has pinkish edges. Still very painful. Should I worry? Should it be debrided? Can my graft survive beneath this covering?

Hi … I recently had an exostectomy . I am now one month post op and while my recovery has been good I still have a significant area of exposed bone in the ear canal …. Is there anything I can do to hasten skin growth in this area. Thank you all for your time .

I had perianal excision surgery the wound has healed welll but will not close it has left a pinhole in the middle that continues to drain, I find that all dressings press into the wound do to the area causing it to stay open, is there a dressing/product that would bridge the uneven area without "packing" into the wound so it can fill in ?

I know this is an old thread but I’m going to wound care for a drain incision that wouldn’t heal they first started having me pack it with silver something for a week and every time the slough was all over the packing material then yesterday had me start packing with collagen foam yesterday and this morning it was pretty deep not super deep but deep enough to have to use a qtip to push the dressings in well an hour ago I noticed the bandaid came off and now it’s not deep anymore almost like it healed that much within a few hours I’m a little concerned did this happen because the bandage came off and dried it out and messed it up or from the collegen working that well? Also does the collegen dressing dissolve because I couldn’t find it when I went to reapply a bandage
Ordinary_Rope_8204@reddit (OP)
Collagen helps wounds heal quickly and it does dissolve so no worries there!

u/Ordinary_Rope_8204 Hello! saw this thread. lots of good info. TL;DR: I have an exposed bone wound in my foot post surgery. It has been healing since mid-october and was 4.5cm deep and now is about 1.2cm deep (1cm x 1cm topically). However, the healing process has stalled the last few weeks. What type of collagen foam/dressing would you recommend to put into the wound to promote healing? thanks so much is you see this.

Hi, thank you for your post and expertise. My friend had minor abdominal surgery 2 months ago to correct (clean out) hernia op “debris“ from 20 yrs ago. I am the packing solider. The wound has 97% healed in depth and width (originally about 2” deep and wide with a width across about a 1/3 of an inch) but there remains one tunnel about 1” 1/2 deep with a single entry (exit) point at the surface. This tunnel is barely bigger (diameter) than the wood sticks (standard 6“ long Q-tip end) that are used for packing. A 1/4“ gauze iodine material is used which makes it difficult to even enter the tunnel when the gauze is “speared” by the wood prior to entry. It takes a bit of pressure to push the gauze/stick assembly in but it can be done and a equal amount of pressure and screwing rotation to get the material to the bottom of the tunnel to pack it. Is it possible the pressure required to transit and seat the assembly at the bottom of the wound is itself preventing this last bit from healing? Many thanks
Ordinary_Rope_8204@reddit (OP)
Hi! I believe I’m understanding what you’re saying. It is possible that the tissue is being traumatized with pressure or possibly frequency of dressing. What I would recommend is packing the base with collagen (prisma) which will feed the base of the wound while packing tunnel as loosely as possible. You don’t want to pack full with pressure but pack enough just to keep tunnel open so healing can occur from bottom up. You are right to pack the tunnel, to prevent abscess from forming. Does this help?

Hi, I had a mole removal in multiple places for cosmetic reasons and all have healed quite well but one and it’s been 4 weeks post op. There’s no other signs of infection but drs have given me anti biotics for a pre caution. I have never taken anti biotics before and I’m quite anxious. I’m 23. What if there is no infection and the wound is just super slow healing for some other normal reason and I’m taking anti biotics for no reason?

My wife just had a boil L&D at the hospital and she's going home today. There is a open wound that doesn't require packing per Doctor, she says just cover it it with gauze and ABD pad. My question is I'm nervous because I want to help her heal safely. It's near her inner buttocks so there's pee that gets on the gauze. What can I buy and do to make this healing process as smooth and safe as possible?

Now there’s some discharge on the dressings; one nurse said it’s serum which is normal but the other nurse said it’s pus indicating an infection. I cut my thumb while washing knives in a hurry. The wound was over 1/2 inch. I had no knowledge treating a wound like this before so I went to the ER.
Later I learned this easy, minor wound treatment with glue was done very unprofessionally. The doctor seemed hurried. My wound just started to stop bleeding after sitting in waiting room for 3 hrs. He pressed the wound before he applied the glue and the wound started to bleed actively again. I had to look away as he started to get nervous about the messy treatment. He applied more glue and finally the glue formed a bloody bubble on my thumb and bc the cut was not closed nicely there is an extra piece of scar on my thumb after glue is gone. I don't know how long it will take the pain to disappear but I guess that extra piece may stay for the rest of my life. If the glue was applied directly on the wound after the bandage was taken off, it should look much more normal now. I felt like if I do it myself with care, it will look much better. Better or worse, the doctor showed no calmness.
Every time I look at or touch my thumb, my heart aches horribly. I just filed the complaint to the hospital but as I thought of this whole again, I felt furious. I was very upset and furious that day and the day after. I wonder if there is anything I can do with my thumb and if it can look less ugly. The extra piece feels like a callus when I touch it.
I was almost leaving the ER as I felt the wound stopped hurting and I didn't know how much longer I may need to wait, but then I got called before the time I set for myself. This is SO much regret after I knew the bill was $745 - I should have researched how to treat that treatment and try to buy the glue and do it at home myself, instead of stupidly waiting there and think something "nice" will happen. I know this is not a life-threatening situation but do I really reserve this (I guess you can say yes ignorance can be costly). I am almost 40 and I never accidentally hurt myself like this. I was very resentful when I got the bill. If I had not tried to overwork, and not ignoring the fact that I was so tired and washing two knives carelessly, if my spouse could be more transparent about the financial situation after being lay-off for 1 year, if I had known ER is THAT $$$ (I naively thought it might be 300), if I did not have the financial anxiety deep down in my heart........would this not happen????
Even though now my spouse is employed again and the financial burden is temporary gone, I am still so resentful and regretful. I am sorry, I know it was just a cut but the whole thing feels so stupid to me. I can buy a box of glue ready at home but that callus-scar will be there, and may still hurt for another month, and look ugly for a long time. I don't know.
I feel like I just just want to blame something or someone because I never did something like this. I would not want to get so poorly treated with such high costing bill. a box of glue costs $35. Lesson 101 for idiots. I really, really, really sincerely hope I will never ever need any medical care in my town for the rest of my life.
Sometimes in life we procrastinate on things, or when nothing bad happen, we just let some issues sit. I need to talk to my spouse about financial things in the family and I am still putting it off for days. My spouse would not know I worry so much and this is the thing between us. This person had no gifts in understanding other's need (empathy) and I am really bad at voicing my needs. SIGH...

I have slow healing from a few small wounds post tummy tuck now 2 months on the GP is encouraging regular iodine dabs I think Manuka honey left for 24 hours is a better option. I have done both .. I was using some heat however caused a small superficial burn around one area.. it bled as I removed my dressing so I have put honey around that and iodine on the actual wound . I thought Vaseline might protect the sensitive area to dressing removal. Please advise Thank you

Hi, would you be able to give some advice on a non healing tumor wound in the breast? It's been 4 years and erosion isn't stopping.

Hi I see you sometimes answer back recently even though it's an old post. My 2 year old son cut his finger on a can he dug from trash it all happened really fast. I brought him to er they decided to glue it hold with sterile strips amd wrap with bandaid so he wouldn't pull it well he's rough with his hands as any two year old would be hitting things constantly just smacking his poor little finger. I was told to leave Thw bandaid around it but it was smelling a little funky so I carefully went to take a look and it was open he got the wound Tuesday and yesterday was when I noticed it was open. I am unsure when it had opened but I have a feeling it was from him constantly smaking his hands on things. The stories strips also was off as well not sticking. I decided to wrap with a fresh bandaid in meantime. It is not bleeding is a bit red not sure if it's normal part of healing or not. I do have pictures I took of it today to see how it was doing I can send you. I'm also curious how long this type of wound generally takes and if it is possible with him constantly banging against it no matter how many times I try to get him to stop doing so.

What would the top 3 (or so) most common wounds be? How are those (generally) treated? What supplies are most useful? Thanks!
Ordinary_Rope_8204@reddit (OP)
The most common wounds that I see are diabetic ulcers, pressure injuries, and post surgical wounds. However, when you peel the skin back (given some difference of fat deposits, nerve endings, etc), it pretty much all heals in the same manner with the same products
-Unless its a clean cut and you can completely pull the wound together, wounds need to heal from the inside out. Otherwise, if you try to suture an irregular wound or hole closed from the top, you're going to create a pocket which can develop into an abscess and festers infection
-wounds heal at least twice as fast with moist wound healing, not dry or saturated, so wound care is largely a balance of finding this. You don't want the skin around it to be saturated or white so you have to find products to absorb the right amount of drainage. I would definitely keep a good stock of ABD pads, kerlix, and gauze, as well as antibiotic cream or hydrogel if it becomes too dry
-Cleaning- we use soap and water, normal saline, or wound cleanser. You can get any of these at a drug store. Hydrogen peroxide, iodine, and betadine can by cytotoxic and actually delay or cause worse damage, however, you have to use what you can in an emergency situation to clean
-Lidocaine- people often overlook how painful dressing changes and cleaning can be. You can get this at the drugstore.
-Compression- when you have an injury, you have swelling. Every time you have significant swelling around the wound (usually in lower extremities), it stretches the wound open and makes healing that much harder. ACE wraps are great and help pull the tissues together.
- silver is a commonly used antimicrobial in current wound care. If you can find or get your hands on silver dressings, they are useful in preventing in keeping down bioburden (infection)
-Anything that touches the wound needs to be kept clean, not sterile, to the best of your ability
-Know the EARLY signs of infection so you can prepare adequately
-Protect your feet with proper fitting shoes and socks. Any areas of friction, use moleskin to protect.
I hope this helps!! :)

What kind of texture are silver dressings? Hard like a ring, malleable like aluminum foil, soft like clothing?
Ordinary_Rope_8204@reddit (OP)
There are different types of silver dressings. Silver foam for heavy draining wounds, silver alginate for moderate to heavy draining, collagen with silver for when you want to encourage tissue growth or fill in depth, or silver gel to keep it more moist. Almost all wound care products come with the option of silver in them and all are available on Amazon.

What’s the best way to close a wound in a high friction area? For ladies, along the bra line, or belt line? Yeah tend to get friction sores if I’m out backpacking and I over do it. Some have taken a while to close, no matter what I try.
Edit: I am not a diabetic. Other cuts and scrapes tend to heal quickly.

I would try anything that can add padding for prevention. Moleskin, foam padding, etc. It can also be made worse by moisture, as wet skin tears more easily than drier skin so maybe try a powder so everything glides easier. I would focus on both adding padding to the object that's rubbing your skin and protecting your skin. You can do this with blister bandages (also known as hydrocolloid). It will protect your skin and heal an existing blistered area well, as it keeps the area moist (see above post). Wounds take longer to heal if they are too dry.
JellyGirl17@reddit
Huh. Ok! Great! I’ll try these next time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I know this is 2 years later - but on your bra line I love silicone strips. They’re waterproof, last around a week and add padding. Also you can get bras that have padding on the wire (and ones that actally having a slight amount of padding instead of a wire) that are amazing for rubbing

I had a lipoma excision and the surgeon placed a bandage and a mepore strip, i was told to not change it until 24-48hrs have passed. But the incision did bleed a little, its not soaking wet or anything though, in fact it has now become hard, like the blood is dry now. Do I still leave it like that for the next 24-48hrs or do I change it? Could a big scab form and make it difficult to change the dressing after? Im not sure what would be best

I’m not a doc, but love the Bandaid brand hydro-seal bandaids. Clean wound & leave on for 3-4 days. They are a thicker gel like material and seal the wound allowing your skin to heal as it should and not for a scab that picks off and allows for more infection & scarring. I use for acne & wounds. Also seems to help reduce the pain. Happy healing ❤️🩹

The latest the wound clinic said is theyd like me to set up an appt with a dermatologist to get a biopsy of wound.. but ive since been told by others, absolutely not. Not to do that. That it would be pointless and painful... currently they have me on the collagen where you tear little pieces and put in wound... they said i wouldnt have to change dressing for 24-48 hours. But i end up having to in only a few hours!!! All of this has been just so draining mentally and physically. Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated. I have a long scar straight from carpal tunnel entry area to about 1/3 the way to my elbow. 7 days ago I had a revision surgery and removal of a incorrectly placed volar plate (emergency situation distal radial compound commutated fracture are the words I remember about it off top of my head lol). This is the THIRD surgery in 5 months in this area. I also have a 3 inch slice on my ulna for similar reasons.
I’m super active and was encouraged by my surgeon to start PT as soon as I could. Today I went for manual mobilization. Skin pulled apart at the wound and stitches a bit as a consequence of movement. Then I went running and noticed the edges of several spots are no longer meeting bonded tho stitches are intact.
I know I need to clean and redress. Can youu please recommend what to buy (already have steri strips)?
My doctor has been very dismissive and absurdly hard to get a hold of!! I have an autoimmune disease and am very afraid of infection !! Advice is super appreciated 🙏🙏

Long shot, but I recently punctured my knee while abroad in a large city. I was refused healthcare as I didn’t speak the language, and was home to the states about 30ish hours after the event occurred.
Due to the length of time that had passed, the doctor I saw was unable to stitch it, cleaned it briefly, loaded it with bacitracin and sent me on my way. They put me on an intense antibiotic regime (no culture done beforehand) and told me to clean and repack with aquaphor twice daily.
Can I send you a DM with some pictures? Want to make sure I’m on the right track. Also wondering how soon I can use hydrocolloidal patches on it to speed the healing process?
Thanks for your consideration 🙏

I’ve been on 4 different broad spectrum antibiotics none of which have done anything. I have 7 abscesses forming right now (some are very small just little lumps under the skin but that’s how they all start and turn into actual abscesses ~1 month later). No doctor can help me.
I had one surgically drained that one has healed for the most part.
I’ve had cultures done but no growth on any of them so they can’t specify the bacteria. Or maybe they’re sterile abscesses. Idk what to do I’m feeling so helpless.

Hello! This is an old thread but I see you still respond sometimes. My 3 year old son just got a big gash on his chin glued in the ER. Everything happened so fast once the doctor came in that I didn’t think of it at the time but the wound was never washed out before it was glued. He fell outside on a concrete step and I am pretty sure he touched it. It was bleeding but not gushing. I’m now worried there is bacteria trapped under the glue and kinda freaking out - how worried should I realistically be? Thanks in advance!!
Ordinary_Rope_8204@reddit (OP)
The body has its own defenses against bacteria. If it starts to show signs of infection, you can always get him on an antibiotic. He probably didn’t want to flush because it would have interrupted the clotting processes that were happening. Overall, our body has great natural defenses and it’s probably not too much to worry about. Hope that helps!

I had a seton placement operation on the 1st of June and had a follow up visit with my doctor and he noticed an open wound about a half inch below the seton . I felt pain around that area but since it’s close to the seton , I assumed it was from the seton . Doctor says the round dung infected but I’m experiencing heavy drainage from the wound , the drainage doesn’t smell bad but I’m very worried now because the wound has been draining for at least 2 weeks now . Is this normal ? Doctor told me to take protein twice a day and fill the wound up with gauze using a long q tip. There is literally a small hole around my perineal area.
