Suggestions for an 80's party costume?

I am going to an 80's themed party in a few weeks time - any suggestions on how to dress, what or who to go as?

Just use a couple of extra large pillows as shoulder pads, and you'll be fine. Nobody will know who you are, but they'll still recognise the costume.

What's your budget? Are you going to try to repurpose stuff you already own, buy some new items or go all out and make your own fabulous outfit from scratch with money no object?! Also, would you prefer a male/female/other costume? Do you want to go as someone well known from that era or just look as if you belong in the era? Easy suggestions off the top of my head - yuppie/wide boy type - get a suit - exaggerate the shoulder pads, add some red suspenders if male or a blouse with a giant bow if female and mock up a brick of a mobile phone that you have permanently attached to your ear all night long. Or take inspiration from the cast of Fame and wear some leggings, leg warmers, a loose tank top and some dance/ballet shoes, big curly hair (whatever gender you are) and a sweatband and you're done.

If female, no-one was cooler than Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics, but you might have to get a blonde buzz cut ! If male, you could go as Phil Oakey from Human League, you'd need a dark wig that flops over one eye, and a lot of eyeliner and red lipstick...and you're good to go.
