Anybody else heavy into RC Cars around the early 90's?

I remember goading my mother into buying me an RC car kit - a Traxxas Hawk. I was 10. She bought me a set of screwdrivers and Allen wrenches that I still have to this day. We were super poor, single mother household, and I opened that box for my birthday and I lost my shit. I was like Will Ferrell trying to put together IKEA furniture, but over time and many mistakes I figured it out. Today I'm an Engineer, and it's probably because of all of that. Thanks Mom.

My parents were kind of cheap, so I had a Nikko Turbo Panther, and my brother had a Tyco Bandit. So I did the logical thing, and bought a Traxxas Stampede kit for my son and I to build together for his 8th birthday.

I had a Team Losi Junior T. And used an old Futaba with stick controls while everyone seemed to like the pistol style with the wheel. My favorite part of the whole thing was painting the lexan body. I’m an architect now and i think tinkering with RC cars led me to my current hobby of riding and wrenching on my motorcycle. It captures the same feelings.

Ugh, yes. The Hawk had terrible planetary gears locked into the gearbox with a kotter pin and every run, you'd year that thing just chewing through metal. I remember "upgrading" and ordering a ball differential through the mail and it took like 10 weeks to arrive. Then that bullshit arrived with a nylon main gear which lasted about two weeks.

My brother and I were briefly into RC cars in the late 80s. One of his friends was going on and on about how great this one RC truck was (the wild pony), like it was better than Bigfoot. So I convinced my parents to take me to Radio Shack where I bought the Wild Pony, took it home, threw in the 8 D batteries (or whatever it was) and the thing absolutely sucked. It was slow and didn’t have any power. Today I would have immediately returned it, but in 1988 we didn’t do that. I was stuck with a stupid toy that I should have tested before buying.

I had a Traxxas Hawk 2, i added a brake light mechanism with LEDs, took ot everywhere. It broke a drive axle I couldn’t afford as a kid, and I have no idea where it is now :( I still have a Nikko Big Bubba that a friend who was leaving town gave me to my astonishment 25 years ago.
