Porridge, may I have your recommendations?

Hi all, as a non-brit that has (just) started trying porridge in the morning, may I ask some questions?
- Which type/brand of oats do you swear by?
- Are you a 100% cow's milk, 50/50 water, alternative milk?
- Are you in the thick or the runny side?
- What flavour combinations is your favourite one/least favourite one/most surprising one?
- Any other bits if information I should know!
aphraea@reddit
Use rolled oats. Try to get ones that have been processed as little as possible.
The Sacred Ratio: 1 part oats, 1 part water, 1 part milk. My dad has a specific mug he likes to use. I tend to use a cup measure for convenience – around three-quarters of a cup is usually enough for me.
Cook it slowly on the hob until it reaches your desired consistency. (Required caveat: my dad is, inexplicably, in an ongoing fight with every microwave in existence to make the perfect porridge. He sets the power at 20% and then puts it on for a long time. This has led to a lot of “Oh, BOTHER!!!” over the decades when it boils over or burns. Nevertheless, he persists.)
Experiment with what to include. I have made.
chocolate porridge, including cocoa powder and a little brown sugar (add cocoa and sugar directly to the oats)
Ok_Consideration1518@reddit
I agree with you about salt. I can't understand why anyone would want to add that to porridge! Like you, I add honey to mine.
0Monkey0Nick0@reddit
I prefer savoury porridge so I make mine with water and salt.
Frequent flavours: marmite, furikaki, grated cheese, chilli crisp.
Any-Wall2929@reddit
I have been meaning to try savoury porridge sometime
0Monkey0Nick0@reddit
What are you waiting for? Get on it!
bucketofardvarks@reddit
Stock cubes work wonders too (but obviously not a whole cube if only making one portion)
unbanned_once_more@reddit
I’m a water man myself and then salt it in the bowl. Add a wee splash of what we used to call “top of the bottle” or single cream and off you go.
Fantastic start to the day.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
If you wish to find my comment, I am much on the same page as you. Scottish?
unbanned_once_more@reddit
Aye, Aberdeen.
CaptMelonfish@reddit
what furikaki are you using? just a general mix of nori and sesame or something a bit out there like Umeboshi?
0Monkey0Nick0@reddit
I’ve been using a bonito pre-mix at the moment. I do like to mix it up and occasionally make my own. Umeboshi is not something I’ve put in the mix but it’s a good idea.
DeliveryCreepy9565@reddit
I cook my oats in warm water, as it makes a sort of milk itself! Topped with some peanut butter, honey, cinammon (this is key!) And mixed nuts/sugar free muesli. Add protein if you're training
coxy1@reddit
Top tip for porridge, when bananas are past their best we peel them and thrown them in the freezer. When you go to make your porridge grab one or two of those bad boys, break it into 3 pieces and throw it in the pan you'll likely not even need to add sugar and it melts right into the porridge with hardly any squishing required.
Andi-anna@reddit
If we're talking absolute favourite with no regards for calories or nutrition then Reddy Brek with skimmed milk (not being healthy just don't like any other milk lol), medium thickness (about the same consistency as really thick yoghurt after you've given it a stir) with lashings of golden syrup! And maybe garnished with some brown sugar for a hint of crunchiness 🤣
On days that I don't want to die of a sugar coma, then Quakers rolled oats, again medium thickness and again skimmed milk, with a little drizzle of honey and grated apple, or a drizzle of honey, chopped banana and cinnamon.
dl40uk@reddit
I sometimes whisk egg whites into mine for extra protein. If you do it right, it makes the porridge fluffy, it doesn't taste eggy. Take it out of the microwave piping hot, chuck frozen blueberries and raspberries in, stir, it's then the perfect temperature for me to scarf it down.
original_oli@reddit
Water, cold. Oats are well lush, no need to tart em up.
Any-Wall2929@reddit
Supermarkets unbranded oats. Lean a bit on the thick side. Usually add either dried fruit or jam. When making it on the induction hob at home I use cows milk, but I also often go out for a morning bike ride and will make it on the beach with a kelly kettle, for that I add boiling water to oats that have been ground up into a kind of rough flour. Just burn some dry sticks on the beach to boil the water.
likes2milk@reddit
Mornflake Scottish Jumbo oats. Not what most folk would select. Measure of a portion, 40g, barely cover with water and soak overnight. Add milk and bring to the boil, reduce to simmer, abb salt. Depending on the day serve plain or add fruit, blackcurrants, apple sauce, blueberries
Purple_Committee_216@reddit
Jumbo oats all the way for me too! I will try Mornflake if I see them but normally get Scotts.
likes2milk@reddit
Scott's is owned by Quaker which inturn is Pepsico
Mornflake is family owned based in Cheshire.
Morrison's usually have them but they play around as to whether it's in the breakfast cereals or bakery isle.
nevynxxx@reddit
Oat milk is an absolute game changer.
Don_Quixote81@reddit
I've tried a few different brands of oats for porridge and the ones I've found best are Kavanagh's from Aldi. £2 for a kilo.
45g oats to 230g semi-skimmed milk, then add cherry jam.
I've tried a bunch of different flavours - various fruit jams and conserves, golden syrup, nutella, salted caramel spread, cinnamon and apple, random fruits. I even tried biscoff, but the flavour of it somehow disappeared entirely when it was mixed in.
mylovelyhorsie@reddit
My favourite too 👍
Scottish_squirrel@reddit
I buy aldis cheapest. 2 scoops of porridge. 1scoop of protein powder and just enough boiling water to cover. Quick, tasty and filling.
Teembeau@reddit
Oats So Simple are my preferred option. But the Co-op version is almost as good and Aldi's is just OK (bit gritty). Co-op is considerably cheaper.
Semi-Skimmed
Prefer it being like wallpaper paste
Apple and Blueberry or Golden Syrup are my favourites. Not crazy about strawberry.
Nope.
Purple_Committee_216@reddit
Scotts jumbo oats and water with a little salt. Then either slice a banana into the bowl and "cook" it in the microwave. Or add soft brown sugar to taste after cooking.
b-e-r-n@reddit
Supermarket own brand Oats are exactly the same as branded Oats.
knightsbridge-@reddit
Any oats are fine, as long as they aren't the cheapest possible. You want to be able to actually see the whole oats in there.
100% milk. I associate water porridge with poverty tbh, it's what I used to have to eat when I was a kid...
I prefer thicker, please.
I like raisins, honey and cinnamon for bougie porridge, feels marginally better than just going for pure sugar/golden syrup.
You know what's surprisingly good mixed into porridge? Spoonful of smooth peanut butter.
CatsCoffeeCurls@reddit
If cooking a runny mixture on the stovetop, be sure to crack a couple eggs into the pot. Really takes normal porridge to the next level.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Cheats one - get rolled oats, pour over boiling water, let cool while getting ready, add fruit and honey. Sowans.
jemjabella@reddit
Burnicle@reddit
I use scottish oats
Pour oats into a big bowl, put in milk (cows milk) and about 100ml of boiling water, mix. The water is important!
Put it in microwave for 1 min on max, stir, then do another 45 seconds.
If you want it runnier do it for 30 seconds the 2nd time.
I then add raising or sultanas or maybe a sliced up banana
Yamosu@reddit
Oats - cheap own brand will do and it has to be 100% cows milk. Semi will do but I'm sure full fat and Jersey would be even nicer. It also has to be thick - no point having thin porridge! As for combinations, I'm a gold syrup man.
Double-Explanation35@reddit
Any oats are fine. Soak them overnight in the milk and it makes the oats fluffy and tastier. I do just milk, semi skimmed but that's because it's what we have at home. Add a ripe pear into the oats when you cook it, it's delicious, even better than adding a mushed banana (which is another good option!) Sometimes I will buy a bag of muesli and grind it up to add in. Constant stirring while you're cooking helps thicken it up but I like it runny rather than like plaster!
imtheorangeycenter@reddit
Milk, thickish.
And here's where I turn it in the unholy, by adding into the serving bowl:
Blobs of peanut butter (chunky, not smooth) Slices of banana Blobs of nutella Squidge of honey
"Porridge of the Gods" is what Leon call it.
pollosgm@reddit
Cheapest possible own brand oats into a bowl, then add sensible amount of full fat milk- as if you were eating it like cereal.
Microwave for 2.5mins, stir, finish with 10sec bursts until desired runniness.
Done this pretty much every day for 15 years. Brands are pointless, oats are oats. With "Microwave porridge" you're just paying for a little sachet to help you measure. It's still just oats.
takesthebiscuit@reddit
Yeah oats should be the cheapest £/kg item out there.
No need to spend money on fancy branded stuff
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
no no no.. Mixrowave porridge is often so so full of shit. Firstly, the oats are ground to dust making the GI different. They'll often add in so much sugar and flavourings and milk powder its no longer really porridge. I used to work in an office where all the women would have those 'pots' where you just pour hot water, thinking it was healthy. I def was not!
barrybreslau@reddit
I use cold (filtered water) with a tiny pinch of salt first, microwave for one minute to hydrate, then add a suitable amount of milk to get it to the right consistency and microwave again. I don't agree with the "cheapest" oats, but own brand is fine. Depends whether you like rolled oats or not (in little bits).
Working-Tale-7224@reddit
This is it really. There's only so much of a song and dance I can give to something as simple as grain & milk.
Difficult_Cat_7287@reddit
I'm a weird one but don't knock it. I use rolled oats, cooked in a pan with skimmed milk. I have it on the thicker side and mix in chunky peanut butter! I don't know anyone else that has peanut butter porridge but it's lovely!
cabreadoanciano@reddit
You do now. 1/2 cup Scotts Porridge oats,1/2 cup whole milk, 1/2 cup water. Leave overnight, Microwave 3 minutes, stir in generous spoonful of Crunchy peanut butter, bring back to boil & enjoy. Peanut butter adds protein & mouth-feel.
Difficult_Cat_7287@reddit
My God, I've found someone! Everyone thinks I'm gross 🤣
cabreadoanciano@reddit
It,s delicious, I often add cinnamon & since reading these comments I.m considering salt.
Difficult_Cat_7287@reddit
Salts quite a Scottish/northern thing. My grandad used to add salt but I've never been keen on it. But then I don't like it ultra sweet either. Perhaps I'm goldilocks 🤣
microdotsleeve@reddit
Scott’s or Flahavan’s. 50/50 milk and water if making on the hob, just milk if using microwave sachets. Goldilocks style - not too thick, not too runnny. Cane sugar, honey or golden syrup on top. Pinch of salt.
julie__duncal@reddit
I recently heard Dr Tim Spector talking about when it's worth paying extra for organic produce and when it's not. He said we should buy organic oats if possible - apparently oats are usually sprayed with glyphosate just before harvesting because it dries them out, making it easier to process and store.
cmdrxander@reddit
I didn’t know this, thanks for sharing
whatwasidoing_@reddit
Cheapest available (have a child that would eat porridge for every meal so we go through a lot).
Full fat cows milk.
On the hob, never the microwave.
Mix chopped walnuts in while cooking. Once in the bowl, flaky sea salt and golden syrup (must be Lyle's).
Enjoy!
Disastrous_Candle589@reddit
Cheapest big bag they sell in Tescos. My previous favourite combination was just porridge with hazlenut milk. Lovely flavour. Then hazlenut milk seemed to be in short supply so I started having normal green milk with a small scoop of salted caramel protein powder for a nice subtle sweet taste without adding sugar.
Used to have overnight oats during the summer. Oats with a bit of milk, chia seeds, greek yogurt and raspberries and blueberries. Bit of a pain at times going to bed then realising i hadnt made it for the following day.
Alarming_Syllabub506@reddit
I use gluten-free ones, the cheapest. Mash a banana in a bowl, add oats and mix, complete with cow or coconut milk. Add frozen red berries or cherries, microwave for 2 minutes, let stand and enjoy. Sometimes I use peanut butter and chocolate instead of frozen fruits.
You can adjust the quantity of milk to your preference. I like it thick so I don't use a lot.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Having grown up with a Scottish mother, it was:
Oats & water, boiled. Once the texture is right, add salt to taste (I like mine quite salty!) then once you've put it in the bowl, you float a layer of cold, whole. milk on top. It gradually mixes through, as you eat, so it becomes a little looser as you go. For me this is 100% the taste of childhood!
I was a teenager at boarding school before I even heard the notion of porridge being a sweet thing! I was _horrified_ (and still am).
nigeltheworm@reddit
Flahavan's pinhead, or McCann's steel cut (depending on whether I am in the UK or the USA). Water, salt, butter. Cooking overnight in a slow cooker overnight is a good idea.
N30NIX@reddit
I use Aldi rolled oats, I usually do overnight but if I forgot or couldn’t be bothered just whack them in the microwave for 90 seconds.
I do prefer to make mine with almond milk
When making overnight, I add fat free yoghurt or Greek yoghurt and any fruit I have around and usually eat cold next day
ATM I like to add frozen berries, but I also make apple sauce and add cinnamon, banana, spoonful of Nutella and sprinkled nesquick is nice..
I do add chia seeds, flaxseeds and my collagen
I’m def on the not runny team
CaptMelonfish@reddit
Rolled oats, not milled, 100% milk, touch of salt, then whatever you ant to sweeten, jam, honey, preserve, nutella, golden syrup, chocolate chips etc etc.
oat milk works well too, we have a big jar of rolled oats and either do porridge or chuck them in with yoghurt, raisins, seeds, and some honey. either works really well.
imjustjurking@reddit
Can't believe the porridge subreddit hasn't been recommended yet
r/oatmeal
I'm easy going, oats is oats
I can't drink cows milk so I have an alternative
I do prefer thick
This year I started making cherry bakewell porridge every now and then. Oats, milk, vanilla sugar, cherries and almond butter. 10/10 it's like a dessert and it feels very fancy.
ZombieRhino@reddit
1. Flahavan’s
100% milk. Usually the mooing kind, but oat milk is good too.
Thick. Spoon needs to stand up in it.
Basic addition of honey or jam, maybe raisins too. But stewed apple and cinnamon is king
5a. Hob is king, none of this modern microwave technology.
5b. Salt. Salt that porridge.
MadWifeUK@reddit
I will also add that full fat cow juice is the way to go. That and Flahavans will fill you up til lunch.
UmaUmaNeigh@reddit
Would you like some oat milk with your oats?
ZombieRhino@reddit
Yes I would, it works well!
Milky_Finger@reddit
I've never bothered to salt porridge but now you've typed that out, I am starting to think that it's what is missing from it being truly good in my life.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
Flahavan is the most correct answer here!
No_Noise_5733@reddit
As a scot I love my porridge, preferably Scots porridge oats or quaker oats. I use my mums recipe of 1 cup.of oats to 2 cups of milk and a pinch of salt. Cook on the lowest heat stirring continuously until ready. Serve with cream and honey or fruit
MrsBarnes1988@reddit
When I'm feeling decadent, I put a couple tsp of Cadbury's drinking chocolate in it, and a little cocoa for richness
skybluepink77@reddit
Mornflake oats - they're the smoothest, imo.
I cook my porridge with water [no salt], then when cooked, mix in two teaspoons of Philadelphia Light. It makes it super-creamy with a slight savoury edge. I then add a little honey and fruit. Gorgeous.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I like pinhead oatmeal, usually in any health food shop. Has a real nutty texture and flavour. Overnight method.
NrthnLd75@reddit
Oats is oats, the cheaper the better.
Water only.
Depends how I'm feeling. Medium.
I often add raisins, powdered cinnamon, powdered ginger, nutmeg in winter.
Greek yoghurt, fresh berries always nice. Maple syrup or honey.
Peanut butter is nice in it too.
Half oats, half granola can be fun.
Basically it's a very versatil dish!
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Any brand will do, I've been on basic own brand for ages.
35g (ish) of oats, 1/3 pint of milk. Mix the night before and leave it in the fridge overnight. I add a sprinkle of ground ginger and sweetener as well.
Microwave for 1 minute, stir, then put it on for another minute and watch. Hit the door button when it looks like it's about to boil over and stir again. Microwave for however long is left. Stir. 20 seconds more and you're good to go.
Serve with your choice of fruit.
dread1961@reddit
I love porridge. Aldi's organic rolled oats are my favourite. £1.99 a bag. The porridge will be creamy whatever ratio of water to milk you use, it's down to personal choice. The traditional way is to cook them just with water, this releases the oat milk. Then all you need is a pinch of salt. Nowadays, most people want them creamier though so half and half or full milk are all good. I was brought up with a spoonful of sugar sprinkled on the top but I'm an adult now so it's just salt. Adding other stuff is ok but it makes it more like hot mushy muesli. I'll add raisins and cinnamon but only if I'm making it cold.
I've just discovered oat khichdi, an Indian dish which is a cross between daal and porridge. Lovely stuff.
another_online_idiot@reddit
I love porridge and have been having it almost everyday for breakfast for years. I always use Quaker Oats (not the jumbo sized oats - they are for making flapjacks). I use skimmed milk, never hear it up and have it with some runniness to it but not totally liquid.
Urist_Macnme@reddit
Used to be a traditional Scot (only salt and water - top with a little milk once it’s served). But recently started branching out.
I go for. Generic own brand. Salt. Tablespoon of maple syrup. Just enough milk to cover the oats. 2 minutes in microwave (1 minute, stir, then another minute) Then I’ll throw in blueberries, or a banana, or dates. Add a tablespoon of crème fraiche and a tablespoon of plain yoghurt. (Because I’m fancy now) Top with milk.
arpw@reddit
Start with good quality jumbo oats. Despite what others here are saying, the cheap powdery oats are awful and just make a sludge without any texture.
I chuck about a pint of oats into a big bowl, add a pint and a half of semi-skimmed milk. Microwave 4 minutes, stir thoroughly, let sit for 5 mins. Microwave another 2 minutes, slightly more or less depending on what consistency you want. I aim for it to be fairly thick and gloopy but still flowing at this point.
Then I stir in a heaped tablespoon of peanut butter, some chia seeds, some cacao nibs, some frozen berries, and slice a banana into it. Stir thoroughly, and enjoy!
You could probably scale this down depending on your appetite, I'm a big eater. My other half would have about a quarter of this for her brekky.
Hot_Success_7986@reddit
Thick 50/50 on milk, add chunks of apple and cinnamon, and then cook on the stove top. I sometimes add chia seeds, too. My favourite is Sainsburys Scottish oats as they are nice big oats and the bag is a reasonable price.
I also like cooking a large amount and then keeping it in the fridge to warm each morning in the microwave. I add a bit of extra milk or water if it's too thick.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Rolled oats - I prefer the jumbo ones. 50:50 water and milk with an extra splash of cold milk at the end to loosen and cool it down. I don't like it too went. My favourite is banana and cinnamon, if I need the energy though I add a drizzle of golden syrup. There are no rules with porridge - just eat what you enjoy.
princessheather26@reddit
Third each water, milk and oats.
I like mine with a bit of salt rather than jam or sugar, but a lot of people find that odd.
atomic_mermaid@reddit
I use morrison's own brand oats, whack some sweetened soy milk in, microwave for 3 minutes (but I have to check like every 30 seconds or it overflows like lumpy lava). Drizzle copious amounts of golden syrup in and maybe slice a banana or mix in some chocolate chips if I'm feeling fancy.
MaryBerrysDanglyBean@reddit
Kavanaghs oats from Aldi. Milk of your choice, microwaved then topped with honey, seed and nut mix and some dried fruit is my go to
IcyPuffin@reddit
Any oats, I use store own cheapest ones. I make with just water and oats, cook in microwave - I don't like cooking with any milk as it makes it too creamy, but microwaving makes them less watery.
I serve with a splash of milk and something sweet - brown sugar is nice if I have any or you can add some honey or some fruit - just whatever you fancy.
barrybreslau@reddit
My step dad swears by double cream and golden syrup. I can't see why there would be any health concerns about that.
Dont_trust_royalmail@reddit
pin head oats are supposed to be the best, but i have to say i don't like 'em. give me some good cheap rolled oats anytime. you cook oats with water (and a dash of salt), and serve with cold milk
wildOldcheesecake@reddit
I buy own brand and cook on the stove with milk. Dash of salt and honey. I like to add raisins and unsalted pistachios whilst cooking. They become delightfully plump and it’s lovely in the porridge.
Jlaw118@reddit
I personally prefer the Quaker Oat So Simple range because of both flavour and ease.
Two sachets with milk and all sorted.
I’m personally 100% milk, I find the hot water porridges a bit tasteless. I prefer it thick. And out of the brand I buy, I like the chocolate one, banana and there was a no-added sugar strawberry one I liked but haven’t seen it for a while. I’d just add a sweetener to that one
WellandandAnderson@reddit
Pinch of salt Bit of butter Sultanas Spoon of golden syrup Oats Full fat milk to cover Warm on hob and stir Pinch of cocoa in bowl Optional cream or crème frâis to serve
60022151@reddit
Like others have said, own brand, cows milk, 2 mins in the microwave...
Once it's done, I like to add more milk to cool it down and a good spoonful of brown sugar. I also like adding having it with nutella instead, or sugar and cinnamon, or a dash of cinnamon, Greek yoghurt and strawberries.
delpigeon@reddit
Flavahans or Jordan's Jumbo Porridge oats
Roughly 50:50 milk to water. I don't mind them with water either tbf! Also make sure you're putting a little bit of salt in there if you want them to have nice flavour.
Thick
Stir 2-3 spoons of natural or greek yoghurt through your piping hot porridge to instantly cool it down and give a lovely sour yoghurty creamy hit
That's my favourite. I do it in the microwave for convenience. Stir half way through.
Delicious_Opposite55@reddit
The cheapest oats. Oats is oats.
Water only (1 cup of water to half a cup of oats)
Medium to thick consistency
Blob of almond butter (crunchy stuff is best), bit of maple syrup
If you eat nothing but oats you will get scurvy
batch1972@reddit
ready brek... with milk, a dollop of cream and jam
SouffleDeLogue@reddit
Into a pan goes:
1 x espresso cup of Flahavans jumbo oats
2 x espresso cups of whole milk
1 x espresso cup of water (boiled in kettle)
Simmer gently while stirring until preferred texture achieved (10 -15 minutes). I stir in frozen blueberries and chopped strawberries, along with s tablespoon of mixed nuts and seeds. Sweeten with honey.
missuseme@reddit
Flavahans oats, blue milk.
A handful of blueberries. Cook it until the blueberries burst.
After cooking break a couple of squares of dark chocolate and give it a good mix.
Neither_March4000@reddit
Shops own oats are fine, I microwave them.
Cow's milk (I use Cravendale, because I do think it tastes better than the shops own, semi-skimmed)
Thick, but (as already mentioned) it will continue to thicken once out of the microwave or off the stove. Oats are great to chuck in anything that needs thickening e.g. soups and stews.
I mainly go for fruit (whatever I happen to have in the house...currently it's blackberries that I've foraged), sometimes some almonds, occasionally I'll dump some yoghurt on there too. But you can do what you like, sweet or savoury. I haven't met an addition that doesn't work, so it's down to your personal taste.
smileystarfish@reddit
Cheap supermarket brand. I like them as a cheap breakfast which means spending less.
50/50 milk and water is fine for me, 100% milk makes it more filling. Sometimes I go for stock for savoury oats instead.
Always thick. Not too stodgy so that it requires lots of chewing.
Favourite combos:
milk, mashed banana, peanut butter (100% peanut versions no added sugar), pinch of cinnamon
1 part oats, 2 parts liquid, 2 minutes in the microwave if you want to be lazy.
intangible-tangerine@reddit
I like mine with blueberries and a spoonfull of nutella
Madeline_Basset@reddit
I always use Flahavan's and I like adding almonds and blueberries. Frozen blueberries are fine - the porridge thaws them pretty quickly.
Agreeable_Fig_3713@reddit
I’m Scottish so it’s supposed to be water and salt which I do like but I can run you through loads of others. Generally if I’m having it with salt I use water and if not I use milk.
Porridge made with milk and a drip of honey is my husbands favourite, my daughter likes it with a bit jam - either raspberry or bramble but strawberry is fine too. I like adding actual fruit to it - blueberries being my favourite and my middle son puts milkshake powder in his - banana, chocolate, chocolate and caramel etc.
Oats are oats. My gran swears by walkers pinhead or Scot’s but it doesn’t matter.
Urbanyeti0@reddit
Generic cheap bag of own branded oats, 100% milk, thick but not to the point it’s claggy, dried fruits and cinnamon and some dark chocolate chips if I’m feeling indulgent
In terms of tips, it always thickens more as it settles / cools enough to actually have a mouth afterwards, so stop cooking it when it’s just starting to thicken and you can always adjust with either more heat or another splash of milk if required
