What would the costs be?

My friend's older sister twisted a story about £15k being given to her by her father before he died. It was supposed to be shared, they didn't pursue it as it would all be lost in costs and cost my friend about the same amount to pursue this money, (advised by the probate person). They have let it go as a life lesson I suppose. I feel sad for them. She doesn't want contact with them or their children her choice. I still think this advice is wrong. What would you do about the money?

If they have evidence - say she admitted it in texts - and it’s £15k divided by at least two people, then it’s within the MCOL threshold. You could put a claim in. Maybe it scares the sister into paying up. Maybe the court says “too complicated, you need a real court,” I don’t know. But submitting the claim doesn’t cost much. Maybe post with more detail on /legaladviceuk.

Yep earlier, as in she found out after we visited him, she asked if I could give her a lift to the hospital, he passed away the following day. On the way home she told me what he'd stated. I found out the whole story later. Her sister ain't the best from previous stories but that is a scummy knew low for her. Never mind and thank you. I think she's let it go. But a warning for people to get their wills in order maybe.

I understood from what she said it was a gift for the brother to look after, but probate said "if they brought it up it would stall the whole proceding until it was dealt with and add costs as they would have to be more invloved" The 15k would have potentially been used up in that proceeding therefore they let it go. It would have possibly cost them 7.5k and maybe lost as no evidence? Then her git brother would still be 7.5k gain.

Honestly, you’d need to get your friend along to tell us specifically what happened. But if she’s given up, there’s not much you can do.

Well considering solicitors will be charging at least £200 an hour, I suspect the probate person is correct. As this won't simply involve one letter been sent the persons sister, it will drag on for months

Yeah, I guess we are all different. My mum would let it go, but she is the sort of person that is easily taken advantage of. I’m not, but I’ve got less people in my life because of it. I don’t think you can win either way really.
