Where to buy a typical bike in Dallas?

We’ve been looking for typical bikes just to go around the neighborhood, down the street for quick trips etc. but not trying to spend $300/each at any normal store we’ve seen.
Other than scouring facebook marketplace, any good shops in Dallas? Also a place to take them when the inevitable fixes are needed?

Bikemart, formerly Richardson bike mart, in Richardson. You will be happy you got a good bike.

People are mentioning FB marketplace and specifically PB&J- all great places to look. But for any first time buyers on FB marketplace- NEVER agree to a “deposit” or “downpayment” to hold the bike. This is a scam.
I saw a bike today at a price that was too good to be true and the guy demanded $50 Venmo to come take a look. He even said “this is how it works on marketplace.” Nope. I’ve bought seven bikes on FB marketplace and never paid a deposit. That’s a scam.

I’ve been to Bike Mart in the white rock lake area, and almost pulled the trigger on a few bikes. They don’t have many options for less than $300, but offer sales frequently.
Your cheapest option would be a pawn shop.
I’d like to sell my commuter bike too if you’re interested.

When I moved to Dallas, I thought a $200 Schwinn from Academy. It SUCKED. It was heavy, the gears didn’t shift the way they were supposed to. It was not fun to ride. I’d ride it, at most, 3 miles at a time.
One day, some jerk broke into my detached garage and stole it. Looking back on it, years later, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I went around to local pawn shops trying to find my crappy bike. Instead, I found a used Trek FX for about $250 at a pawn shop on Greenville. It was light, shifted crisply, and was a joy to ride. I put so many miles on it, I upgraded to a road bike. I’ve upgraded road bikes since. But I still have my old trek and it is still my favorite bike.

But hubs is selling his bike if you’re interested. DM and I can send you the listing.

Bicycle blue book is where i got my cheap trek

Some good advice already, but Bike Mart and REI are gonna be outside your stated budget. Academy and Walmart are good places to start.
Once you have a bike though, REI is good for maintenance. Get the lifetime membership for like $20-30. You get free flat repair (ie tube replacement) as long as you provide or buy the new tube. Labor is free.

I'd buy used off of CL: you should be able to get a decent hybrid in good shape for $150-200. Look for a nice basic 7-speed hybrid that has the gearing you need to get around town and can do some longer rides on (like a loop around WRL). Mountain bikes go for a bit more but are versatile too. Find something that's a decent brand either sold in bike shops or DTC; if they sell it at Wal-mart or Academy, it's not a decent brand. Huffy is complete garbage; the Yugo of bicycles. Riding a bike is a joy and while getting around is useful, there's a good bet that you'll enjoy getting out on longer rides. I ride 10-15 miles every morning before work: not long enough to really be on a "training ride" but enough to feel good, have plenty of energy during the day, and sleep well at night.
Go too cheap (like the $99 specials someone spoke of here) and you'll get a POS bike. That means a $65 trip to a real bike shop to get it barely function, because, again, a new $99 bike is like buying mystery meat for 99 cents a pound. It might do the trick in a pinch but you really don't want to make a habit of it.
Working in the industry, I've probably seen 80 of those brand new Wal-Mart specials come through the service area, because the idiot at the box store didn't install the brakes correctly and they learned not to buy a bike at Wal Mart the hard way. I'll let them take a spin on my cheapest hybrid ($325 back in 2017), and they're so blown away at the difference that they end up ditching the Huffy and either getting something decent used or buying a new bike from me.
Here's a great example of an easy to ride, well built comfortable hybrid from a good brand. Exactly what you'd need.

This looks like a great bike

Was in a similar situation as OP, and fully agree with everything you say here.
Buy too cheap of a bike and you’ll be taking it to a real bike shop to get it fixed, buying yourself a headache and spending the same if not more.
bananabob23@reddit
If you don’t want to spend $300 on a bike you won’t pay the $100+ to take it to a bike shop. Walmart and Academy both have cheap bikes and YouTube videos have more than enough info to make cheap repairs yourself.
bluesunlion@reddit
Second this. For low impact riding, an ozone from Academy is fine. I rode trails for over a year on mine before upgrading, although I did have to replace a broken derailleur.

Pawn shop ! Look at the tag of it been there for months they will take offers
user212415818@reddit
REI might work.
KitchenPalentologist@reddit
Their bikes are out of OPs budget.

I have three beater bikes you can come get for free. They need work. Tires, etc. They are bikes....just not ready to roll. Two beaters and one kinda nice, now I think of it. I'm near Love Field.

Academy Sports and Outdoors has a wide selection under $300.
BillDuki@reddit
Avoid Walmart/Target. Those are pretty much “Toys”. For inexpensive and decent, academy or any other chain sporting goods store will be fine. Academy has a pretty good selection of “in-between” bikes. Not Walmart junk, but you aren’t going to be hitting serious trails/or riding for hours at a time with them either.
No-Net-8290@reddit
REI if you want something super specialized. Dicks sporting goods for something pretty good. I got my mountain bike from Sun and Ski they have amazing collection and let you test drive them. For the basics Walmart, target

Oak cliff bike synergy - they fix up commuter bikes and are cheap. They aren’t bad ass road or Mtn bikes but I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for.

Pawnshop, thrift store and marketplace!!
matt_havener@reddit
I would use FB marketplace if you're trying to get a deal. Lots of great deals there
rougefalcon@reddit
Facebook Group - PB&J (peddles bikes and junk) might be worth a look

Look at Play it Again Sports for a used one, but you she able to find one at Walmart for around $80.
lan3yboggs99@reddit
Dicks had bikes at different price points and we have been happy with the one we bought there. Also REI. If anything REI also has a good repair shop
TotesMcGotes13@reddit
Wife and I both found great deals on used bikes on Facebook Marketplace. They’re not perfect, but they’re great for just cruising the neighborhood and mixed use trails.

Pawn shops around Arlington have a lot of bikes

I'd probably check a few pawn shops.

I just bought a bike off FB for $50. The cheapest adult bike I found was one at Walmart for $99

For cheap but functional bikes, go by Bike Friendly South Dallas. They're super nice folks, do great work in the community, and have quite a few bikes for I think around a $100 suggested donation (they're a non profit). You can also volunteer your time in various ways to earn credit at their bike store.
greelraker@reddit
I see people leaving bikes for free in front yards all the time! I’d be happy to sell you one of them! WAY less than $300, too!
HRApprovedUsername@reddit
I think $300 is pretty normal bike price unless you’re going used
