The main runway [03/21] at Perth Airport has been left out of action after an alarming incident in which part of it was torn up by a Qantas plane.
Video circulating online shows Qantas flight QF71 appearing to damage the runway as it took off for Singapore about 12.15pm on Sunday.

Fast forward to timecode 00:50.

I’ll have to take your word for it. I couldn’t see any tarmac flying up. On mobile though.
rosie2490@reddit
I’m also on mobile. A huge swath of it took flight behind the aircraft itself. The big black thing.
piercejay@reddit
Because it's a runway, not "tarmac"
coneycolon@reddit
The aircraft didn't destroy the runway. The runway disintegrated due to normal usage.
rocketshipkiwi@reddit
Definitely not normal for a newly laid runway to disintegrate like that.
thesuperunknown@reddit
That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
turdburglar2020@reddit
It’s ok though - the runway got blown outside of the environment.
ExZowieAgent@reddit
Into another environment?
haventkilledamanyet@reddit
no, it was towed beyond the environment, it’s not in the environment

Must have used cardboard derivatives.
poemdirection@reddit
Disagree, the way that dirt shot up he was definitely heavy on the clutch.
He was Granny shiftin' not double clutchin' like he should. He's lucky that hundred shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake!

Now me and the mad scientist have to tear apart the engine block to replace the piston rings they fried!

Exactly
Illustrious-Book4463@reddit
Pretty shoddy maintenance on that runway
Doopie5@reddit
Being a quantas pilot must be stressful imagine being the first one to cause an accident in its entire accident free history
hat_eater@reddit
What's with the hyperbole? This is not an infrequent occurence at all.
rocketshipkiwi@reddit
Can you give us some other examples of runways failing like that?
hat_eater@reddit

rocketshipkiwi@reddit
So your description of it being “not infrequent” isn’t correct then?
hat_eater@reddit
I suppose so. I just I saw such films several times recently, but considering the way unusual events are amplified in social media, I should have had checked.
SecureThruObscure@reddit
Babies are born all the time but why are these new parents so dramatic about it?!
The obgyn who’s done this a thousand times confused why others are interested in something that happens rarely for them.
Even for folks in general aviation, who are a bit more exposed to planes than just anyone, this is something of a novelty.
It’s not really hyperbole to call it dramatic, I think.
alsotheabyss@reddit
I mean, it’s Perth. This is the most exciting thing to happen there in about 12 years.
Grolschisgood@reddit
Might not be infrequent, but the video was pretty cool!
twcau@reddit (OP)
shrug The article was written by someone who doesn’t fully understand what happened, frequency of occurrence, or didn’t care to understand.

People get excited in dullsville
Jay_Bird_75@reddit
Any damage to the aircraft??
PunkAssBitch2000@reddit
So how exactly does this happen? Like what most likely caused the runway to just detach like that?
hack404@reddit
It was alarming for the planespotters who'd come out to watch a 747 land
-burnr-@reddit
Not dramatic or alarming.
twcau@reddit (OP)
It’s like some people are intentionally ignorant.
Most reddit subs i’m on don’t allow or permit you to editorialise the title of links posted.
That was the title the article used, doesn’t mean I agree with its characterisation.
