Someone tell me this is a bad idea financially before I buy it

1965 Ford Falcon Sprint Bluetooth floorboards Gnarly rust on the roof Body is pretty straight besides the roof and surface rust. My plans for it: Rip out the inline 6. Throw in my rebuilt 351w with GT heads, and a healthy cam Top loader 4speed or a T5 Fix the roof and floors Give it a quick farm implement paint job and send it? ̶P̶r̶o̶f̶i̶t̶?̶?̶?̶

Every car is a bad financial decision to restore. 40+ years of experience talking. And I do just about all my own work. Paying someone their shop rate is a disastrous investment. It’s like a sickness though. I think I have like 14 in the fleet right now…
MSampson1@reddit
I could tell you, but it seems like you’ve already made up your mind. You see what it could be, not what it is. I have the same problem, just nowhere to put a project car. So, that said, buono fortuna!
stinkpot89117@reddit
How deep are your pockets?
GawinGrimm@reddit
Like all "project cars" it is a financially bad idea :D But we all do it. That one looks like a very bad idea.
Hearthstoned666@reddit
for fuxks sake, man, there's nothing left on that body, you'd need almost a completely new body. Is it REALLY worth it?!
IamNotTheMama@reddit
Unless you can get another one that has a good roof you will be old before you fix this one.
If you do get the other roof you will be only slightly less old
powerhouse403@reddit
Run away, very fast!
AbhishMuk@reddit
Good thing that car can’t chase him very fast!
powerhouse403@reddit
It's a ford product, it has a hard time going down hill!
Shienvien@reddit
Well, it's not likely to be road-legal in this decade.
jw7991@reddit (OP)
Road legal? It's road legal the way it sits in my state lol
Shienvien@reddit
Don't most US states require some kind of MOT/TÜV equivalent?
spotdishotdish@reddit
It was close to half the last time I checked
texan01@reddit
Not all of them
jw7991@reddit (OP)
Yes most. The inspections here are laughable. And we won't even need to get them starting next year
gibby-is-a-unit@reddit
Unless you’re doing metalwork yourself thats a terrible idea. If you know what your doing and have done similar things in the past, send it!
The1930s@reddit
There's more rust then car 😬
CrudBert@reddit
Man… even for free … that’s a tough one. You have a shop, welding machine, fabrication tools? Do you want them? If so, maybe get the shop, welding machine, some metal fab tools, an engine puller, engine stand, a small repair rack to be able to lift a car at least a few feet. Take some welding/painting classes at the voc-tech, along with engine repair. THEN buy you a car to fix up.
jw7991@reddit (OP)
I have a shop and all that. Only reason I'm even thinking about this car
CrudBert@reddit
Nice! Then offer the guy $50 and take it home! After getting it all repaired and covered in primer, have it professionally painted and then upholstered. Could be worth $40k, or sadly $8k.
So, just plan on keeping it / using it /showing it for fun, unless someone throws $40k at you afterwards.
jpautohaus@reddit
Why in the fuck would you buy this LMAO
jw-heiny@reddit
Yes, that is a bad financial decision, But as a person who makes poor financial decisions, I would do it.

Old-Spend-8218@reddit
If it’s just the roof cut it off get another- but that looks like it is mucho work
69Bandit@reddit
if the car is free... sure.... Id personally tell them they are asking too much for the condition. maybe tell them "dents are easier to repair because there is stil metal there, if you want what your asking, you need to protect the car from rusting apart for another 10 years till all examples are this bad.
DakarCarGunGuy@reddit
Tell me you want to become a master welder without saying it. Investing sheet metal and tetnis shots.
R-Inferno@reddit
I think it really depends on your fab skills if you take this. Also your patience and obviously budget. This is definitely gonna take more than you think so you have to be ready for that.
juniorl3@reddit
Chop the roof and turn it into a convertible
crazyasjoe77@reddit
Make it a convertible🤣
Restomodded@reddit
If youre gonna half ass it whats the point? Youll be lucky to break even

aBuzzedLife@reddit
If you have your own shop with all the tooling, a team of guys with years of experience, a discovery channel budget, and a reputation at Mecum for building high quality restorations, I’d say go for it. Otherwise, maybe try and find something with a little less rust at least.
jw7991@reddit (OP)
Yes to that first part. It's not going to be a show car just a muscle car I can't fuck around with and not mess up something special. At best it'll be a hot rod/ratrod. At worst it'll be $500 worth of glass for my Cyclone GT
VictimOfRegions@reddit
If you mean there's $500 of glass sitting in the trunk then it miiiiiight just be worth the gas money you'll spend bringing it home
saxonchevy@reddit
That glass is already delaminating. I'd have to let that one rust in peace.
leicester77@reddit
This. And get a tetanus shot first. Good luck.
quartz-crisis@reddit
If you have all of those things you have the budget to know that to fix it up you’re going to pay like 10x what just buying a better car will cost, money that you’re never going to make back. That’s assuming this is a free car.
If this was some super super rare numbers matching car or something then it can be worth it. But this isn’t, and it is really really far from it.
Most of the people who spend extra on something because “the numbers match” are fools - numbers matching after a full rebuild doesn’t matter unless the car was already rare. And definitely nobody gives a shit about an 80hp slug of a 6 cylinder (I’ve owned many “Falcon” / little 6s- they fucking suuuuck. But forcing them to breathe with a junkyard turbo setup can be fun. Although still not really that fast for the money).
Enough-Scientist1904@reddit
the only profit will be for the person who is tricking you into paying them to take this pile.
mini4x@reddit
This is $40,000 away from being a $20,000 car.
They made billions of falcons, a decent runner/driver can be had for about $10k or less..
If you want o do a mild v8 build you'd be far better off just buying a nicer one to start with.

Never buy a rusty car with holes in it there are so many unrested cars in the west that have never been restored waiting to be restored to have no rust at all buy one of those they're going to spend less money buying a clean car and having a ship then trying to mess with rusted out junk
catsaresneaky@reddit
I have some rust for sale if you'd like to make an offer
Daddy-o62@reddit
Financially, you’d be better off if you took the cash, shredded it, put it in a salad, ate that salad, shat it out, and put that shit in the spot you have reserved in your garage for this rust bucket.
Zer0TheGamer@reddit
Why are you wanting to buy a rust block? Making shutloads of Thermite or somethin??
Final-Top-7217@reddit
If it's a genuine Sprint it's a rare car and you've got to save it.
jw7991@reddit (OP)
It's a genuine sprint but I have a 67 Cyclone GT in muuuuch better condition ill probably just get that thing on the road
Klo187@reddit
The windscreen is held in with chewing gum.
I’d stay away from
vnummela1@reddit
If you have to weld around windows/glass, you better be good at making all the lines straight and accept weather-strips after youre done, also you'll need to atleast remove or change entirely the windscreen.
Not worth it. Get a body from California or some desert state where "rust" isnt a thing.
pushingair@reddit
This is hell. Don't do it.
MrCoochieDough@reddit
U should charge them for taking it away lmao

I tried doing lines of coke with them, the wife said to stop OR ELSE. I tried flushing them down the toilet,my plumbing backed up. They don’t compost well. What the HELL am I going to do with them?”
If you have lately thought those thoughts, go for it. It’ll solve all your problems.
shotstraight@reddit
OMG, the Titanic has less rust and would be an easier fix. FUCK!!!
HelloYouSuck@reddit
How much are they paying you to take it?
swanspank@reddit
The roof and other stuff is all repairable. But you see that A post rust on the right of the windshield? That’s a bitch to repair and nowhere to buy the sheet metal parts.
jw7991@reddit (OP)
Yup it's like that around the whole windshield and both drip rails. That's the thing that scares me.
chris_rage_is_back@reddit
Bro I'm a really good fabricator and even I wouldn't touch that unless it was free so I can scrap it after it crumbles when I go to move it
swanspank@reddit
You might search around and see if the 65-66 Mustang parts fit that. It very well may. I doubt you can find a roof skin but patch panels for that are do-able from 18 ga sheet metal. The problem is that upper edge by the windshield has a header beneath the roof skin that attaches to the A post and to the header that goes over the top of the doors. Then the bottom attaches to the front door jamb and the cowl. Like I said, lots of stuff going on in that area.
quartz-crisis@reddit
Then why are you even fucking around the thought of trying to rehab this. It’s gone dude.
traumatic415@reddit
This makes a bad idea look brilliant in comparison.
sh1ft33@reddit
Dude... some things aren't worth the pain, financially at least. These are beautiful cars but if you aren't fluent in welding, fabricating, body work, and painting, you may want to skip this one.
Papercut_247@reddit
Body swap it with an s10 or something narrow. Keep the floor and firewall from donor. Put any engine and transmission combo. You like boom!

coyoteatemyhomework@reddit
First thing you need to do is research availability of body parts and aftermarket support. I know from experience falcons/comets and even fairlane are pretty much non existent. This car doesn't even look like a donor car. It would be a NO from me

This is a bad idea financially, emotionally, mechanically, spiritually, medically, psychologically, and maritally. When are we getting started?
Obvious-Dinner-1082@reddit
That body will fall apart once you put torque to it. Ie: your big fat motor. The pillars are structural. The body will twist. Now think about what happens if you get hit by some chump running a stop sign? Dead.
The only thing that car is good for is parts, or maybe a demo car on a closed track with a roll cage.
wsfrankm@reddit
That's no longer a Ford Falcon, it's a ball of rust now.
Evee862@reddit
Don’t even touch it. Roof rust like that isn’t cheap to solve and that’s IF you can find a donor roof
Fredneck_Chronicles@reddit
They’re all bad financial decisions lol it just depends on how much you like the car and how good your skills are to fix the issues. Personally I’d pass on that car unless it was just insanely cheap, mainly because I think fixing that too would be a nightmare for me. I’m sure some other guys who are used to those kind of repairs wouldn’t flinch at it and would have it fixed in no time.
Nouseriously@reddit
You will never financially recover from this
texan01@reddit
5 lug wheels so it was originally a V8 car.
It shares a ton of Mustang parts, so aside from unique body panels, the mechanicals will be easy.
mini4x@reddit
Other way around but yes. The falcon had been around for 4-5 years before the mustang hit the street.
texan01@reddit
Yup.. the humble Falcon was the origin for a whole host of Ford cars including the Maverick and the Granada.
mini4x@reddit
The most bizarre i think is the Econoline, mid engine unibody van..
texan01@reddit
Yeah that’s a Falcon in name only though… I do t think k it shares much with the car.
jw7991@reddit (OP)
Yeah og owner pulled the 289 and slapped it into his mustang and put in a 200 or something. Not great at identifying the old inline 6s.

My buddy in college had a 64 ford falcon and I loved it, the interior was minty and the outside looked pretty good too but it will always be one of my favorite cars. Wasn’t fast and it drove like a boat (swaying into turns) but holy shit was it dope to ride in.

Fabulous-Stretch-605@reddit
Falcons are cheap enough that you can find another. Even for free I don’t think it’s salvageable. It’s not a Mustang where they sell everything in a catalog….
jw7991@reddit (OP)
I think everything but the body and some parts of the steering is all mustang stuff.
7thgen13@reddit
True 90% of the mechanics are mustang but the suspension body interior is falcon only now you can install the front strut towers and cut the floor to make it mustang but falcons are cheaper to find and tou can find one better
joeyjoeskullcracker@reddit
I love those cars. I had a 64. You can definitely find something better to start with. I wouldn’t waste my time on that one. And of course, anything can be done but that’s a ton of work.

It would be a lot of work, but far from impossible. I repaired a 64 Impala that was worse than this. I think a 65 Falcon is worth saving and I would def take a crack at this. If the price is right, I’d do it. I’m a self taught guy who has done metal repair, dent repair and color sanding / polishing on other people’s cars but not a pro by any means.
Boilermakingdude@reddit
I got a car in better shape than that for free. You'd have to pay me to take this. By the time you buy all the panels etc you could have a decent rolling one without all the rot
