ULPT Request: Found Airpods 3, can I secure them for myself if the owner isn't found?

So yesterday I found a pair of Airpods 3 in a café. I tried to find the owner but every search I started failed.
They can be connected to my phone but they are registered to an iCloud adress so yeah, is there something I could do if I don't find the owner? I don't want them to rot in some police chest forever, I'd rather just have them myself then

Just connect them, that way they will see where they are and get them off you.

Pretty sure you can just factory reset them

Hate when people get all high and mighty, we all know what sub this is and even if you are lying, this is ULPT, it's to be expected.
Quick answer, you can connect them, but you'll get the "the owner can see your location" popup everytime you use it. No way to clear it completely unless they remove the airpods from their icloud.
They could come looking. They may never make any attempt. Your call if you want that risk.

thanks for the info! tbh a few hours later i can see why it may seem like i wanna seem „all high and mighty“, i should’ve phrased the post a bit differently. Of course I wouldn’t mind new airpods that’s why the post is here in the first place but I did try to find the owner personally via local groups etc aswell.

Usually, I would ask the cafe staff about my lost item. You could have given them your contact information if you really wanted to return.

Should have kept that comment to myself anyway, but it was directed towards those with ethical questions/responses.
Enjoy your AirPods!

nah you were right I sounded like a prick 😭

Bro just saying, earbuds get pretty nasty. Definitely recommend against using randomly found ones. Especially ones that are gonna track your location and report to who knows who.

I just lick all the germs off before I put them in my ears

Same! I especially love it when I find an abnormally large chunk of ear wax. It's like a delicious surprise gummy bear!

Post on local Facebook group and leave them at the cop shop. Problem solved.
Evening-Picture-5911@reddit
That’s not very unethical

The Cafe has a lost and found.
If you actually tried everything, how did you miss that little tidbit?
drunk_bender@reddit
That's ethical thing to do...

Just pointing out the OPs bullshite.

I did ask the café to take then there, they declined though because too many people never picked up their stuff.
Fluffy_WAR_Bunny@reddit
That sounds like horse shit.

lol okay? but that’s what happened idk what to tell you and why you’re so mad

I’ve attempted to turn in things at small cafes or coffee shops and was told to leave a note with cashier or put a note on the bulletin board and keep it until someone contacts me. (One was a phone even)

Insist on them taking the the AirPods. It's not like losing a baseball cap.
