British, m, 31, work remotely, looking to move out of the uk - roughly £40k to my name - which countries could I make a life in?

Everywhere expensive, everywhere struggling. But as a Brit make use of the commonwealth. Canada perhaps, New Zealand maybe (is that commonwealth?).
Hutcho12@reddit
What does “make use of the Commonwealth” mean? There’s no privilege that British citizens get because of the Commonwealth. It basically means nothing these days, unless you want to compete in the Commonwealth Games - an event the majority of the world doesn’t even know exists.

Long term stay visas, and even 6 month travel visas are often easier to obtain within these countries if you are British or belong to one of the other commonwealth countries.
Also if political, Commonwealth members also have the right to vote in 16 countries. This is a relatively unique benefit, as only three countries allow non-citizen residents the right to vote in elections.
Also if they start a business there, it might be easier to make use of The Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda as an already British or commonwealth citizen (not specifically resident).

None of these visas are related to the Commonwealth, they are just bilateral agreements. Some Commonwealth countries have them, as well as some non-Commonwealth countries. Most Commonwealth countries don’t have them. It’s the same with voting.
The Commonwealth means nothing anymore.

Canada and New Zealand are both commonwealth but bloody expensive, good luck buying a cardboard box with £40k.

Maybe they were looking to rent. Expensive everywhere. I'm mainland Europe now. Can't even buy a one person flat for under 450k

Yes, NZ is commonwealth but very expensive right now with housing issues. Visa fees also recently were increased by quite a bit.

Great shouts cheers

Depends on what way you live. We just gone to Belgrade. Live like a European without the eu rules at less than have the price. I was kinda taken back by the amount of us/ Canadian/ aus and kiwis that have done the same. Her now 18 months and loving it. 🇮🇪
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
Damn I’d have never thought of Belgrade. Cheers! Glad you’re loving life out there!

NZ (where I live) gas the British weather and lots of British expats. The job market sucks at the moment although if you work remotely that might not impact you.
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
Ye on the job front I’m kind of set. I’ll have a look into nz thank you
Waste_Worker6122@reddit
The tricky part here is finding a place to live in a location you like. That said the real estate market is also lousy at the moment so if you have the cash you could get lucky.
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
That’s fair enough. I know a few people who have lived in nz too so hopefully they could give some specific advice on where would good for me

NZ doesn’t have a digital nomad visa.
The average price of house is just under $1,000,000 as a heads up.

£40k really won’t go all that far in most international moves. If you’re not taking much stuff with you, you can save up to £10k on international shipping fees - but still, you will have a lot of expenses organising a place to stay.
Do you have a work visa for a foreign country? Are you even eligible to get one? If so, will you get a job immediately? If you won’t get a job immediately, how long can you last while you find work? Again, £40k will dwindle fast, and you won’t be eligible for most (maybe any) benefits.
Have you researched foreign job markets? Are your job expectations realistic? Most employers are wary of hiring a new foreign arrival. Do you speak the language - or will you need to do a course to learn it before you can sit an interview or work effectively?

Thank you for your response. Work wise, I was planning to keep the job I have. I work for an international tech company, they have plenty of remote employees. So my issue is visa - how long id be able to stay in certain countries and if they are suitable to British expats. I do speak French, but they don’t offer digital nomad schemes. I was hoping to use that £40k for a deposit on some property wherever I end up and go from there. Seems tough though
freebiscuit2002@reddit
Yes, how it will go really depends on where you go. There are cheaper countries with lower property prices - but if you’re moving to Albania or Argentina or somewhere, I think you really need to know what you’re doing, and ideally have a local network you trust to help you.
On that point, if you have friends/family in country X, I’d say that can be incredibly helpful to your move. They’ll know the tips and pitfalls better than you ever could. I moved to the US, but I would not have pulled it off without the people I had already here to help me.
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
True. Community will be an important thing for me too so it will be really helpful to have someone there. Thanks for your advice
AntiFacistBossBitch@reddit
What kind of climate do you like, are 4 seasons important to you? What do you need for a good quality of life - for me it is nature and culture? What languages do you speak?
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
I love a winter, and a summer, but +30 is a bit much for me. I look for safety, culture, community mostly. Speak French
I love sport, i have a lot of hobbies, socialising is important to me
Hope that helps! Thanks for your time
AntiFacistBossBitch@reddit
French, sports, mild summers & winters - difficult. Most French speaking places where your budget would get you near a property purchase - don’t do the winters you’re used to & visa will be an issue everywhere longterm without employment, property or business. What about the obvious- France? It’s meant to be digital nomad friendly.
What about French Guyana or Senegal? (no idea about Visa & such)
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
Digital nomad visas in France aren’t really a thing for someone with a uk passport rn. It was my first choice though…
I’ll look into Guyana & Senegal though - ty

Depending on your field, you might consider doing an advanced degree in the south of France, where 40k pounds/year would go decently far and you’d receive pay for research in your area.
Potential_Cause2368@reddit (OP)
I love that idea. Thank you will 100% consider that
