This is going to continue happening in increasing severity and number until we bring back mental health asylums for people who need it.
He does not need to go to jail. He needs to be medicated and receive help. Then perhaps placed in a public works program (bring those back too) where he can be trained in skills to receive a job after rehabilitation and in this way he will repay his debt to society.
But I’m out here living in fantasy land with my ideals unfortunately.
Bread_Hut_2012@reddit
Takes a special kind of delusion to watch a man brutally assault a woman in broad daylight and think “we need to do more to help him”.
Why are you people so obsessed with defending and helping the absolute worst members of society? It’s truly insane to me. I think it’s mostly self-serving, it’s a nice ego boost to moral grandstand.
Why is this awful guy worth all that effort? Why don’t we use the money that would pay for all that “rehabilitation” and use it for someone who actually deserves it? Someone who isn’t out attacking people for no reason?
Ridiculous mindset like this is exactly what’s emboldened these people to behave like this, you will never stop trying to excuse this and will continue to blame everything besides the offender.

If only there were career politicians like Nancy Pelosi or any of the democratic presidencies or dem majority congresses or houses could have done something about it, amirite? Fucking republicans and their 45 year old legislation. Maybe Kamala will do something about it after she tackles the inflation her administration is responsible for. Fingers crossed, right?
noncongruent@reddit
Maybe you can call your Republican buddies in Congress and tell them to stop obstructing and filibustering everything the Democrats have been trying to do? That would be nice.
gaythrowaway73@reddit
45 years is one hell of a long filibuster. If democrats are so incredibly ineffective that they can't accomplish something in almost half a century, maybe they're not fit for office.
Dear-Tiger7214@reddit
So is there a connection for why he did that or is he just off his fkn rocker and thought he would try to murder people that day?!?

I'll never understand what compels people to do that kind of violence just out of the blue? Even if there was some context, it's still terrible and troubling..and probably an attempted murder charge.
noncongruent@reddit
Mental illness coupled with a complete government rejection of any kind of mental health care system that could have easily headed off this end result. The ACA, i.e. ObamaCare, has money in it for mental health care, but because Abbortt rejected the Medicaid Expansion that money is unavailable in Texas. Republican leadership here, which has had rock solid total control of the Texas legislature since 1995, had also blocked every single attempt to bring accessible mental health care to this state, with the end result being that only people with good private insurance or lots of wealth can get the care they need. This, of course, rules out people who aren't wealthy or whose jobs don't offer high quality mental health care benefits. One out of seven Texans has no health care coverage at all, and of the remaining six out of ten probably half to two-thirds don't have quality mental health care coverage. It's a recipe for exactly what happened to this woman, as predictable as the sun rising every morning.
Environmental-Age149@reddit
In addition to identifying him, can we identify the MULTIPLE people who literally walked by her unconscious body on the ground after witnessing the blatant attack????
InformalTonight1125@reddit
It's the Purge. People are so dead inside. No one cares. Just the way they want them to be. Dallas is getting the aggressive homeless seen in LA and they're so clueless they have no idea how to deal with it.
noncongruent@reddit
You figured this all out from less than 6 seconds of video? Bravo Mr. Holmes, bravo.
BurritoBrigadier@reddit
That video was so weird man. I swear it looks like those people that walk by had absolutely no idea what happened.
It doesn’t even look like they glance over.
etchasketchpandemic@reddit
Yeah - I watched the video 5 or 6 times because I was wondering how they could be so callous. But after the re-watches, I think they didn’t even noticed what was going on. There was no reaction at all, not even a glance over. I think they were oblivious.
InformalTonight1125@reddit
Because it's all about "me". They've been programmed to be literally robots. Little empathy , compassion or awareness.
noncongruent@reddit
And it was only 6 seconds from the attack to when the video cut off, so it very well could be that at 7 seconds they rushed to the victim. Fox hasn't released the rest of the video so there's not a way to know anything more.
Whynotme88@reddit
I walk on streets a lot. I stay focused within my SELF-where I am going & where I put my feet. I do not want to fall or injure myself, run into folks, or step in dog or homeless people’s poop. I am not very aware of the other things going on around me, because I also have my attention on not being hit by a car. I understand it’s much safer to stay aware of all the people around me too. But I have a specific amount of attention to give & it never seems to be quite enough. Definitely I agree... We should & must step in to help & assist fellow humans. Kindness to everyone is important to me. I might not be able to “save the world”, but my intention is to help whenever I see something or someone that needs my positive or uplifting attention. I’d be sceptical of stepping in tween an armed attacker & the victim, but I’d certainly try to create a distraction or another type of disturbance to get other help & people quickly involved. I do not believe I can stand by unmoved while another human or animal is being harmed or abused. I hold a positive consciousness that a majority of other humans are similarly wired & capable of automatically reacting in a similar manner.
noncongruent@reddit
And my point is that trying to condemn a whole city, much less three complete strangers, based on nothing more than 6 seconds of video, is not constructive. Nobody knows what these three people did after the video was cut off by Fox. My guess is that it dawned on them what happened at the 7 second mark, after the video was cut off, and they immediately rushed to the poor woman's aid, and at least one of them called 911 to report the attack.
InformalTonight1125@reddit
Americans are literally programmed to no care about one another. It's all about themselves and getting worse.

A_giant_dog@reddit

influencers-suck2022@reddit
Because people suck that’s why. Wouldn’t you want someone to stop and help you?
Standard_Extent984@reddit
didn’t they put a guy in jail that helped someone?
A_giant_dog@reddit
So what's the benefit to you, identifying them?
influencers-suck2022@reddit
Something doesn’t have to benefit someone for it to be the right thing to do
A_giant_dog@reddit
What is right about identifying these people?
noncongruent@reddit
Seeking to identify these three bystanders in order to vilify and shame them is most certainly not the right thing to do.
AdChoice2614@reddit
Not trying to vilify them at all! Just trying to make sense as to why they kept on walking when someone within their class vicinity was knocked the bell out.
Hell, if someone would have tripped near them I bet they would have said something or helped the person back up.
noncongruent@reddit
You're trying to judge them based on just six seconds of video. How would you feel if you found out that just one second after Fox cut the video that they rushed to the woman's aid after realizing what had just happened? Would you be mad that it took them seven seconds to realize what had happened?
AdChoice2614@reddit
As stated, not judging them. Making a comment off of the video footage that was provided.
Environmental-Age149@reddit
I have questions for them. But I certainly wouldn't be asking them what they had for lunch.
technical_eskimo@reddit
So true.
A_giant_dog@reddit
What?
the_original_kiki@reddit
We were at the hotel in that block, and from the 4th floor window I saw a woman lying on her back on the sidewalk in front of the plaza across the street. Lots of people walked by her.
gaythrowaway73@reddit
To be fair, if they didn't see the assault they probably assumed it was just another homeless person.
Gaiter14@reddit
I'm immediately reminded of failure to render aid. It usually applies to motorists, but I wonder how it applies to pedestrians and such, etc.
noncongruent@reddit
It does not apply here, only to vehicular collisions, and only to those involved in the actual collision itself. If you see a crash happen and don't stop you've broken no laws. In the case of this video we can only see the three pedestrians for 6 seconds after the attack, at which point Fox cut off the video. We don't know what happened after that point, have no way of knowing if the pedestrians went to the victim's aid at the 7 second mark.

Dude was gone, if you aren’t gonna try to grab the guy who did it at least rush over to the person who got blindsided
noncongruent@reddit
The video cut off too soon to see if they turned back once they realized what happened, or to show who else arrived at the victim's side afterward. There's only 6 seconds of video from when the perp hit the woman and FOX (or whoever is using a camera to record from the screen) panned the video away from the people who had just left the crosswalk and cut to the rest of the story. Fox also didn't air any video from that point to when people arrived to help the woman, for all we know the three in the crosswalk turned to help the woman as soon as the video cuts off. It really would be nice to see the original video in its entirety.
latino_steak_knife@reddit
I would have been running over there immediately to at least check on her, 6 seconds was enough to show the lack of urgency. I truly hope they came to aid even if all they could do was call 911
A_giant_dog@reddit
I'm not a coward I've just never been tested. I would like to think that if I was I would pass. But then again I'm afraid of what I might find out. I've never had to. But I know some folks who have. It makes me wonder if I could.

When that marine got arrested for choking out and accidently killing the wild NY hobo it really put a hesitation in people to jump in and get involved, but otherwise we shouldn’t be so patient with these crazies being belligerent in the streets of normal society.
ZackTheZesty@reddit
I suppose we should just avoid choke holds and maybe subdue them with tickles instead.
TexasReallyDoesSuck@reddit
neely hadn't even assaulted anyone. i'll repeat, he didnt assault anyone. if your first thought process to a homeless man sayin wild shit & actin weird is to MURDER them thru a chokehold that lasts for 3 to 4 minutes, then you belong in jail.
arguing otherwise just says people can straight up murder anyone they think is acting threatening
Appropriate-Dot8516@reddit
What an awful take and misrepresentation. Every person they interviewed was terrified of Neely and how he was acting. They were glad someone jumped in and subdued him.
And he had assaulted multiple people in past, including brutally attacking an old woman. He was a legitimate psycho.

TexasReallyDoesSuck@reddit
they were terrified so 1 guy murdered him? do you realize how many ppl can say they're terrified of any single person, thus justifying that? the chokehold went on WAY too long. if the goal was to subdue him, it could have gone other ways. there were 4 or 5 people who couldn't help subdue him without him losing consciousness? 1 guy took it upon himself to do a 4 minute chokehold. that was excessive.
and whether or not he assaulted ppl in the past doesn't mean anything for a current situation. that's the same argument people use to defend cops when they murder someone. "oh, look what they did in their past!" ok?? no one has access to what he did in his past in that moment.
even legit psychos deserve due process. i wonder how many ppl you deem threatening enough to kill when you go out in public? what homeless person would you defend killing in downtown, if one was shouting at you, maybe acting threatening but didn't do anything yet, you'd justify murdering them. theres millions of other options other than murdering.
gaythrowaway73@reddit
Yeah, we need to wait until they do something like this before we step in. FLAWLESS logic.

Those people definitely saw that. If not, how?! I’m sure that lady yelled or something.
I take the train to Dallas from East Texas often to visit family and I’ve always enjoyed walking around down there. But the last time I came up and did so recently I genuinely felt scared and quickly walked back to the train station. There was homeless and questionable looking people everywhere and one woman was seemingly following me a few blocks and muttering something.
I have lived in NYC, Chicago, and LA but never felt as on edge as I did in Downtown Dallas that day. It feels super dangerous down there now It’s nothing like I remember.

I’m a 200 lb 6’1” male walking in broad daylight. If you a smaller or not an accomplished fighter don’t ever go downtown unless you want some practice.
J_Dadvin@reddit
I moved here from Portland. Reddit loves to defend this type of behavior as normal, but let me tell you it is not. Go to the Portland sub and look at sentiment a few years ago versus now. People used to ignore it and now they realize how serious it is.
I suspect cartel meth is making it here now. It used to be primarily isolated to the I5 corridor, so the truly psychotic and dangerous homeless people were only a West Coast problem.
These people are totally deranged and legitimately dangerous. These type of attacks became common in Oregon leading to serious urban blight. Once upon a time it was a city where biking, walking and public transit were the way of the future to the government a d residents now totally writing off that future because public transit is too dangerous.
This type of behavior is not something that should just be accepted. If it is indeed coming from psychosis inducing meth, it should raise serious alarms.
mrrochi@reddit
I promise you cartel meth was in Texas far before it was in Portland 😂
J_Dadvin@reddit
You would be incorrect. It was exclusively trafficked along the I5 corridor. This is why the homeless crisis was uniquely horrible on the West Coast. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/11/the-new-meth/620174/

I typed my comment in reply to yours above and linked to this article before scrolling and seeing you included it yourself. It's eye opening for sure. I was a heroin junkie, ice was never my jam, but I had plenty of crossover with people in many different rehab, jail, and traphouse settings who personally testified to just what a different animal the newer P2P meth is altogether.
Unfamiliar Redditors might be quick to write you or the idea of "meth - but scarier" off, but don't be fooled, it's a very real phenomenon and the effects on the user make them dangerous not only to themselves but also anyone in their surrounding area.
J_Dadvin@reddit
Thanks. I've seen it first hand but never experienced it. Meth is such a big issue in America today and I feel like it's unspoken about.
wtfandy@reddit
Hope it gets better. So many folks strung out at the West End and St. Paul stops.
One_Salamander_9701@reddit
Absolutely. If I don't have to ride the DART rail, I will go out of my way to avoid the stations downtown. An extra block is worth it.
One_Salamander_9701@reddit
I've worked downtown for 6+ years and like to go for walks on my lunch when it's not oven temps out - never had a problem. I can ignore people shouting at me - comes with the territory as a woman 🤣
Montallas@reddit
I’ve worked downtown on/off for ~10 out of the last 13 years. I’ve never had a real problem - but let’s not pretend it’s nice or pleasant to deal with all the shit people are complaining about.
There are all kinds of crazy people - some who you even become familiar with. They range from drug blasted zombies to scary violent folks to totally harmless. I realize it’s reality, and it’s not uncommon for much of the urban areas in the country, but suggesting it’s no big deal feels in-genuine.
I actually really like some of the businesses downtown and I go out of my way to patronize them, but when I recently had the opportunity to choose if I was working downtown or not downtown, I jumped at the opportunity to leave.
One_Salamander_9701@reddit
I don't think anyone is pretending it's nice or pleasant to deal with. I just try not to let it mess up my day. I've always had my head on a swivel, aware of my surroundings. I avoid conflict. And I've stayed out of real trouble, fortunately. There will always be risks you can't avoid, like a random attack from a psycho like this dude. It's a fact of life if you go outside. I vote to support policies that address such issues, and in the meantime I keep my eyes open and my mouth shut when I'm out and about.
Montallas@reddit
I’d say that the risks of a random attack are higher in downtown than in somewhere like Highland Park or Southlake. So theoretically you could avoid downtown.
One_Salamander_9701@reddit
Theoretically, sure. But I work there, so no. Not too many of my jobs in Highland Park or Southlake.
yogiyogiyogi69@reddit
I work at nice hotel downtown for 3 years now and we have had multiple employees get assaulted by homeless men this summer in broad daylight. Not just yelled at but repeatedly punched in the face unprovoked attacks when walking a couple blocks to our parking garage. Right near att discovery district. Male and female employees assaulted. Be careful out there keep your eyes and ears open. there is a very real and unfortunate problem downtown
LuDortian007@reddit
I got assaulted in downtown Dallas on my very first day visiting the city in anticipation of my move. I was walking exploring downtown and ended up by the DART station in West End. Guy starts panhandling and harassing me, calling me a racist for not wanting to shake his hand (I am dark brown skinned), and follows me into a liquor store. I lose my patience and tell him to fuck off, and just as he seems to be leaving, he turns around and sucker punches me and runs off. Police were right there and catch him within a minute of the assault.
I walked by the area again recently and it's still sketchy as fuck. No doubt there are parts of downtown that have deteriorated.
One_Salamander_9701@reddit
I'm really sorry that happened. I definitely avoid certain areas, that DART station being one of them. The tactic I've learned is first, keep your eyes to yourself. If someone unwanted interacts, be firm but polite. "I'm sorry, I don't have cash," with a sympathetic look. (I don't carry cash - I'm a horrible liar). Then I keep walking and don't continue a conversation. It sounds cold, but as a petite woman, it has kept me out of harms way for almost 40 years.
LuDortian007@reddit
I lived in NYC for a decade, so I’m familiar with all the tips and tricks. This guy was just an asshole and that area should be avoided as you said.

The downtown area has seen a population growth while East Dallas has seen a huge reduction in multigenerational housing causing what looks like population stagnation or slow growth but, is actually a redistribution of local population from Old East Dallas to East Dallas to Garland/Mesquite.

I worked downtown for over a decade and used to commute in on the TRE & DART. Did school on the weekends too, so I've spent a LOT of time there. No issues until this year. I’m 6’3” & 245 and had an experience with a guy staring at me, then muttering how he was going to kill me while approaching me. Luckily a ticket inspector was onboard and made them get off with him bc no ticket.
Working_Succotash_41@reddit
Its gotten worse for sure
wtfandy@reddit
IDK why you've gotten downvoted so much - you've given a good description of the state of the area. I don't see a reason for big companies to relocate in the heart of downtown. Goldman is coming in North of Woodall Rodgers and that area feels way better taken care of and invested into.
Cars are constantly being broken into or vandalized. Two people in my building were car jacked in the garage (Bryan Tower).
BurritoBrigadier@reddit
There is a lot of homeless but our experiences seem to differ.
I work downtown and go out often throughout the day. I’m a man of average height and I’ve never felt threatened or like I was about to be attacked down there.
wtfandy@reddit
Most people, shouldn't a bad experience downtown, due to low exposure. There are crazy folks everywhere - I would wager way more on the roadway.
I was on DART & TRE for an hour and a half each way, every day, including 7-10 minutes of walking and waiting at various stops. 12-15 hours to have interactions with folks each week. 14 years of no issues - then a few negative interactions this year. Good run imo.
bugagi@reddit
I started riding dart last year. Maybe every few weeks to go downtown and not deal with parking. 75% of the time so far something has happened. Whether it be fights, homeless people puking, or psychotic people threatening to kill everyone, it's always something. I had one guy politely tell me he was not going to kill me. I saw another guy pull out a Bowie knife and get in another guy's face while screaming he was going to hack his head off. Pretty much Everytime I ride it's 90% homeless people trying to get out of the weather.
wtfandy@reddit
Yup, always something going on. I left that out, but should have noted that while I only had a few incidents directed toward me during that span (right at the end), that I've witnessed stuff almost every day. Lot of homeless on homeless crime.
I think things just get normalized. Walking toward work, I remember that they hose off the sidewalk, columns and windows at the corner of Bryan and Harwood every morning because ... it's a urinal.
SadBit8663@reddit
I'm 5 foot 9 and 120 pounds soaking wet. We must not encounter the same homeless people. I feel comfortable walking around downtown in most places.
How you carry yourself matters too.

gaythrowaway73@reddit
no bet, but I will bet $100 your post will be removed for violating one of the rules against not being liberal and apologetic about crime.
anonymousguy11234@reddit
I mean, there’s a pretty strong case for attempted murder here. I don’t think would-be murderers get released too often.
noncongruent@reddit
Texas doesn't have an attempted murder charge. It would have to be filed as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, likely as a second degree felony.
ApplicationWeak333@reddit
Yes there is a case to be made, but dallas prosecutors will NOT make it
gaythrowaway73@reddit

IllBus4102@reddit
It would be useful to see more of a presence of police patrolling on foot in the downtown core of Dallas. I work downtown and I do see police in their cars but I honestly can't recall one time seeing them walking around and actually making their presence felt. In addition, despite being in the cars, I have never seen them go after any of the red light runners I see daily. Not saying they are not doing much, it's just not clear to me as a casual observor what that is.
Legitimate-Water-263@reddit
First yall wanted to defund the police & when crime goes up yall want them again? Hmm
noncongruent@reddit
Police haven't been defunded and crime has gone down, not up.
IllBus4102@reddit
Well, I am a proponent of funding the police so that they can get the right folks in those roles with the right training, clear job responsibilities and performance metrics.
heff1685@reddit
They would have to not be standing in a circle and talking for them to be effective and if you have been to any event then know that doesn’t happen.
FashySmashy420@reddit
Just to be seen. I’ve literally been waiting on a train at West End station and seen a stabbing. With police less than five feet away. And they did nothing.
A_giant_dog@reddit
But it's hot and yucky outside
hallalua@reddit
Somebody dressed like that when it’s 90+ outside makes me suspicious. Unfortunately, I don’t think there will be much punishment for him because he is highly likely to be homeless and mentally ill.

I’ve noticed that lately the homeless in Dallas are getting more aggressive. The other day I was walking home I had one shouting at me trying to fight them. A few days earlier went with some coworkers to get lunch and another smacked my friends phone out of his hands. Wtf is going on??

I’ve heard the same all over the nation, apparently some new cheaper meth.

Looks like the same guy and this was back in June.
caternicus@reddit
I immediately thought the same thing. It looks like a guy I saw at a Dart station in March or so. He was just standing at the entrance with a piece of rebar about 5ft long. Same basic clothes. I ignored him and went to the platform. He came out on the platform a few minutes later. A Dart cop came down a few minutes after that. They both walked off a bit, then the train came and I didn't think about it after that until I saw this video, and now again with the new one.
LebronsHairline@reddit
Which stop was it?
noncongruent@reddit
The video in the other attack didn't capture the perp's face, so there's no way to assume this attacker is the same as the other. If anything, the two attackers seem to have different builds and different walks.
monolith_blue@reddit
Suspect. Looking for a suspect.
greg_barton@reddit
Yeah, but the physical actions in both attacks are almost identical. Same movements, (left to right swing) same type of weapon, same use of weapon. (Grip of stick near the end, wide swing, targeting back of the head.)
noncongruent@reddit
The physical actions needed to swing a stick/club are basically the same, the only significant variation is left or right handed. The ratio of right handed people to left handed people is 10 to one, so just on probabilities alone trying to say that it's the same person because they both swung with a right-handed grip is statistically meaningless. As to targeting what part of the body to hit, heads are a natural target, there's nothing unique about either perp choosing a head strike. Head strikes are also correlated with high angle blows, which both attacks used. High angle blows are also not unique.
To actually compare either perp requires having a face visible in both videos. There's no face visible in the older video at all, so all that's really left is gate and apparent build.
greg_barton@reddit
Same body type. Looks like the same height. Virtually identical stance while attacking. You don't need to see the a face to notice that.
Deep Ellum attacker hasn't been found.
Certainly could be different people. If so that's even more concerning.
noncongruent@reddit
Same body type, as in having two arms, two legs, and a head? I would agree. Impossible to estimate height from the two videos available to the public, especially the second video which was recorded from a monitor with what looks like a Russet or Yukon Gold cell phone. Again, the attacking stance isn't a usable identifier since that stance is standard for all overhead strikes using a club-type weapon. It's like trying to say a particular person was the hit and run driver based on how they were holding their steering wheel.
We're back to general build and gate. The second attacker seems more heavily built than the first, and the first attacker's rapid walk away from the scene very different from the more casual saunter of the second attacker. The first attacker also attacked someone else as they were leaving, and their motions were rapid to the point of almost being disjointed. Second attacker was very different in their apparent feelings after the attack.
greg_barton@reddit
Yeah, after the Deep Ellum attack the same guy could be more confident and know they may not get caught.
noncongruent@reddit
Why do you need to believe it's the same guy? None of the evidence points that direction, in fact points away from them being the same person.
greg_barton@reddit
Some of the evidence points in that direction.

of who the suspect is???
noncongruent@reddit
The only way you could be surprised by who the suspect is is if you personally know the suspect, and know him well enough that what he did here was a big surprise to you. Is that the case? Or maybe you personally know the suspect and aren't surprised by what happened, in which case, did you make any attempt to inform law enforcement ahead of time?
