Bro lmao can’t have shit in Dallas

Long distance girlfriend came into town for an in person work event so I stayed at the hotel with her over the week. Got home and lo and behold someone literally stole both tail lights from my truck.
Hotel of course only has footage of somebody staying behind my truck for 10 or so minutes but Jesus bruh. Worst part is the local ford house quoted me 4K for the replacement because of the blind spot sensors also being gone (???) so if anyone knows where I can get some replacement taillights and sensors for less than that let me know
I’m just at the point where all I can do is laugh about it like damn I would’ve preferred a broken window and my cologne and hairbrush stolen instead of this
_______woohoo@reddit
i work in garland and someone stole our fuckin inventory scanner gun
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
Honestly if we out here losing taillights I can condone the scanner but I also have to ask; (For a friend)
how much copper wire is in them
_______woohoo@reddit
hahaha couldnt have been enough to be worth it, but we have a huge copper/wire theft problem here in garland. i recently saw a fiber optic box ripped open
Proshchay_Pizdabon@reddit
lol what could someone even do with one of those? Seems worthless on its own.
_______woohoo@reddit
they aint even steal the charger!
Usual-Caregiver5589@reddit
Yeah, they needed something to keep up with all the tail lights they've been stealing
Icy-Essay-8280@reddit
I stopped worrying about having a nice vehicle long ago. Nice vehicles are a target for low life.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
To each their own man, i like cars, trucks, vehicles in general and I like working on them. This was more of an impulse buy but I was also raised with that “what if you need a truck one day” mindset. I should’ve gone with a Tacoma or whatever Nissan offers in hindsight but I got a good deal on this one right before COVID hit.
Icy-Essay-8280@reddit

Agile_Definition_415@reddit
You should assume that things like this are bound to happen and should include it in your maintenance budget. If you can't afford to do that you can afford to have a nice car.
WestFizz@reddit
No, absolutely not. Thievery shouldn’t be tolerated.
Agile_Definition_415@reddit
You shouldn't tolerate cheating, that doesn't mean it won't happen and you shouldn't be ready for it.
In life you need to be pragmatic and protect yourself and what's yours, nobody else will.
CowboyAirman@reddit
yes, that's why they are opting for the older, not as nice, vehicles.
thedentonmare@reddit
Darn. Some democrats found your truck bro. I’m sorry.

This is one of the weirdest take on politics.
Pretty sure whoever stole these isn’t voting.

Just drop by the Billiard Den in Richardson off Arapaho next Sunday, ask the door guy where Ryan (not me) and the degenerates are he’ll point you in the right direction. It may be my birthday but I’ll buy you a drink
DirtySperrys@reddit
Getting flashbacks of when mine were stolen back in 2020. Sorry OP. I suggest getting some different bolts with a “tamper proof” head for your next set. The only thing holding those expensive parts in is two regular bolts behind the tailgate.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
Oh nah I’m gonna trade this boy in for one that isn’t so desirable in the tail light category soon as insurance sorts me out
Secret_Ad_7840@reddit
And worse, you can't drive it without risking a ticket for your taillights
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
That’s actually the only reason I posted this. On my way home from the hotel I was getting honked at, had multiple cars barely brake in time to avoid a rear end and I was like “wtf”
Now mind you my dumbass dismissed the warnings that popped up like blind spot assist isn’t working etc as if it was a temporary bug, but after making it home down 635 I checked and well yeah that’s the picture I posted
Herry_Up@reddit
I have seen cars with red tape cut and stuck on like a real taillight.
Jericoholic_Ninja@reddit
How terrible! Does your insurance cover it?
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
It does, I have comprehensive due to financing it
Agile_Definition_415@reddit
Look on craigslist, Facebook marketplace, and similar second hand selling marketplaces and you'll find them. And by them I mean the lights they took from you.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
Nah man I’ll let insurance handle it. I deal with enough BS (not really but I do live in mesquite and work in deep ellum part time) to bother with that. All I care about is getting the truck roadworthy again, mostly so I can sell it cause ngl this incident reminded me how little I need and use this truck.
I literally only took it out to show it off to old girl, and this reminded me how little I need or use this truck
Dicksphallice@reddit
So what would you do if you think you find them? Would you confront them? Do you have evidence? That's the unfortunate thing, these are kinda untraceable.
Agile_Definition_415@reddit
You contact the seller arranging to buy it and then you can do one of two things.
You can put yourself at risk and confront them and hopefully get out of there alive and with your taillights in hand.
Or you buy them. Thankfully you know they're stolen so you can use that to haggle them down, thought don't admit they're yours.
Medical_Bite9967@reddit
Was coming to say the same!
aPowderBlue@reddit
Insurance agent here, and yeah these tail lights are stolen very frequently.
Ford made them easy to identify with the little symbol on it, Ford made them super easy to steal, and the best part is Ford priced them at an extremely high price... making them the perfect part for a criminal to make a quick buck on.
Because they are stolen so frequently, they are almost always on backorder.
Since it happens so often, the same client does end up filling multiple claims to the point where the client gets a final warning in that if they file one more claim (any type of claim) they will be dropped.
If they are dropped for number of claims, they basically become uninsurable as a person for 3 years, even if they no longer have the truck since the claim sticks to the person.
Vehicles 2016 and up are all trash to me. Cheap, badly designed, and extremely expensive parts... I always say vehicles 2015+ are basically built as 1 time use.
Sorry that this happened to you, but I hate to tell you that it will likely happen again, so do not remove Comprehensive coverage off the truck.
I see you have a nice little NA Miata right there though. That's becoming a rare gem these days. I sold mine not too long ago. I started to feel unsafe with all the trucks these days being built so high and then you have dudes lifting their trucks to make up for other parts of their lives.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
I appreciate you and also the other guy very much, very sad to hear your NA got sold cause excuse the rhyme it’s a pot of gold.
This post was just mainly a vent post but it’s good to see someone else doing well and also knowledgeable in the line of work, I’m actually a home insurance adjuster.
shhjustwatch@reddit
Spoken like an insurance agent. They are not on backorder. What other truck tail lights are not just held by two bolts? Ford also stopped putting the BSM symbol on them. A thief doesn’t need the symbol, it’s identifiable by the mirrors. They are expensive because of the module and BSM in them. A good agent would inform their insured that there are cheap anti theft deterrents online.
aPowderBlue@reddit
Well they seem to have been on backorder a lot in the past 3 years, perhaps supply has come back.
I WONDER WHY. 😂
Sounds like you are confirming everything I said about poor designing.
More confirming of my statement, alright, thanks.
That's not my job. People can buy whatever they want with their own money and I am nobody to tell them what they should buy.
Also, the fact that there's even a specific anti-theft device specifically for these tail lights backs up what I said about them being the perfect part for a criminal to take.
Spoken like an angry online troll with nothing better to do.
How about you get upset at the fact that there are scum out there stealing people's property that they worked hard for. How about you at least sympathize with the OP at the fact that he had an incident where he was victimized while making a living.
shhjustwatch@reddit
I did let OP know there were antitheft devices online. I didn’t mean for it to be offensive about spoken like an agent. That’s your job to be frustrated with expensive, unnecessary claims. I was simply giving insight on a few of the statements that I had some knowledge on. Almost every vehicle that has BSM’s are identifiable by the mirrors. Ford wasn’t thinking about making a truck accessible for a thief, yet the customers. They even provided a lock in the tailgate to avoid this. I am definitely upset with the thieves in the world. I have replaced more of these tail lights and catalytic converters than I ever wanted to.
Finylin@reddit
You can also buy an aftermarket set of taillights as well. If these thieves are smart enough, they won't want the aftermarket ones because they don't sell for as much. If you need to go through insurance, I'd ask them to cut a check for what the new pair costs. Then buy some quality aftermarket ones and pocket the rest just in-case.
tacoscholar@reddit
I drive a 2007 vehicle, nothing fancy, I’ve driven it through hell and back and it somewhat shows. I can afford a new car, and every time I think about pulling the trigger I see a post like this and think “nah, I’ll keep my unassuming beater.”
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
That’s cool man I appreciate you as a fellow shitbox enthusiast.
CulturalChemistry952@reddit
I really want a new car but at the same time having a beater is a luxury too. Not having to worry if it gets scratched or dented. Maybe having two vehicles??
heart-cooks-brain@reddit
Auto insurance is expensive enough for one vehicle.
AlarmedSnek@reddit
Agreed. I’ve been done buying new cars for a decade now, they’re too expensive to fix when they break, people steal shit from them and they fucking cost way too much.
ConsequenceSea3334@reddit
I will forever buy crappy cars that i can pay with cash for no matter how much money I make
InTheShade007@reddit
Bought one new truck as a younger man, never made less money than that, and never bought another new vehicle.
It makes no sense.
Elluminated@reddit
That’s a smart man right there.
DodgeWrench@reddit
And then when someone does steal your tail lights, you can replace them with generic square LEDs. Lol
pitifulparsnip@reddit
I feel the same way, I drive a busted up 2003 sedan and everyone I know keeps asking why I don't buy a nice new car. When she eventually breaks down for good, I'll buy another beater.
Dirtysoulglass@reddit
Mine's an '00, gave a ride to someone who was utterly shocked that it didnt scream at her for not having a seat belt on, lol. No annoying sensors in my vehicle! (Not driving on real streets, just driving slow on private dirt road. Promise I make everyone wear belts when actually driving, lol)
greelraker@reddit
I’ve been wanting a pickup, and can afford one. I think about all the shit drivers without insurance and not being able to park it at the grocery store without the fear of it being stolen and I think “maybe my 18 year old car I’ve been driving for a decade isn’t so bad”. It doesn’t do what I WANT it to do, but it does what I NEED it to do.
leasthanzero@reddit
Man I’ve been in the same boat for some time now. I’d like a bigger car(suv or truck) with more than 35+mpg range. Are there any I can buy that’s not tempting for break-ins or parts theft?
Any-Machine-4323@reddit
What year is your ford ranger? The dealership might be scamming you on the price…
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
2019, and most definitely.
It’s town east ford in mesquite and they’ve been jacking up repair prices for anything that’s not warranty for years now.
I used to have a 2017 5.0 mustang, quoted 3k for a clutch, got it done at the dealership right by the harbor in Rockwall instead, 1800 out the door
Any-Machine-4323@reddit
https://ford.oempartsonline.com/oem-parts/ford-tail-lamp-assembly-kb3z13405g
You can get something more precise if you put your VIN on it…
Did they also remove the harness shouldn’t be that hard to install if they just stole the tail lights
I didn’t know that Town East scammed people… now I Know where to take my car if my car transmission goes out
GetBent009@reddit
Yeah the blind spot sensors on those trucks are built into the tail lamps, that’s why they get stolen.
Arrasor@reddit
I'm pretty sure OP would have filed claim if he can after seeing quote in that ballpark. I guess he cheap out on comprehensive coverage.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
It’s financed so I kinda have to have comprehensive lmao
Objective_Piece_8401@reddit
Had this happen to me last year. Insurance claim was over $5k.
DirtySperrys@reddit
Yep. Sadly got mine stolen too back in 2020. Was about 4k back then for them too so had to go through insurance.
The only thing holding those lights in is two bolts behind the tailgate. I’m surprised they didn’t take that from OP too unless they couldn’t open it all the way.
WillTwerk4Rent@reddit
I’m screaming the tail lights?? 😭
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
I know right? I’m mad but also flabbergasted
Present_Wafer_2905@reddit
Insurance should cover that as right ? It’s comprehensive claim minus your deductible
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
Yeah for sure it does or Atleast it better lol.
I just was like “they’re just tail lights why not replace them myself” cause I figured a couple hundred at most would be what I paid
Rather34@reddit
Hope you have a backup plan.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
For sure man, I’ve got 3 vehicles, ranger, a Corolla for my commute, and the non running Miata in the photo
TheRealBadGate@reddit
you don’t have comprehensive coverage?
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
Yeah ofc but I figured just the tail lights wouldn’t be that much so I looked at replacing them myself instead of waiting on insurance. Wasn’t counting on those blind spot sensors
Exquisite_G@reddit
Lock your tailgate.
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
Tailgate was locked, ford house says they probably cut them through the gate
First-Delay8239@reddit
Wouldn’t insurance cover the bulk of that $4,000?
RiceNation@reddit (OP)
They will but it’s still just so silly to me
ERCOT_Prdatry_victum@reddit

RiceNation@reddit (OP)
It’s just a project I picked up recently, just need to drain and replace the fluids and it should be ready to go, tho the clutch plate seems a lil worn so that’ll be next
elliequay@reddit
I don’t know if this is helpful but I replaced the taillight on my car and it was super simple. 15 min job. The part was like $100 and the shop quoted me like 6x that. However, I don’t have any sensors or monitoring equipment. If you could just plug new lights into the existing plug it would be so simple to do on your own. Who knows if Ford has some “software update” they have to do to make your taillights functional though. 🙄
Obieousmaximus@reddit
I am so sorry! It angers me so much. A few years back when we had got a Tahoe I walked outside to missing side mirrors. They were the nice ones with sensors, blinking lights and defrosters and who knows what else. They were very expensive to replace. I didn’t want to file them because it would have made my insurance go up and it was just cheaper to get them replaced out of pocket. I drive a lame car with AC as my commuter car and no one wants to steal it. Worst thing I’ve had done to it was had the gas stolen out of it.
Competitive_Box_3284@reddit
Simply amazing. I had my catalytic converter sawed off my car in the Whataburger parking lot on Northwest Hwy while I was inside getting my order..middle of the weekday...
Special-Steel@reddit
Ford tail lights are crazy expensive and have electronic parts that are part of their supply chain problem. Supposedly better now.
Do you have comprehensive insurance?
EntoFan_@reddit
Me too…I drive a cash mid-range car for a decade then replace with another. I take care of them so they don’t look like crap and are a comfortable ride, but nothing worth stealing or even noticing in a parking lot.
Sensitive_Code_1161@reddit
To make it tougher on the thieves maybe specialized bolts be used that the thief will not have a tool for.
bishaaB@reddit
Check marketplace bro, guaranteed those ppl that stole it are probably selling it there
th3B34RD3DBRUT3@reddit
Damn man. They took the fucking break lights. WTF!!!!
Visual-Sector6642@reddit
I had two break ins on my FJ cruiser where they tried to get the custom radio out (neither time did they get it out.) I'll never have a custom radio again. Also no new cars for me ever again in this third world country.
3shinyjules@reddit
we have had the tail lights stolen from our ranger twice. first time ruined the tailgate. the suggestion from the police was a good one, if you can do it: backup against your garage door. I work from home and my desk is right against the front window. I see people driving through the neighborhood, sometimes hanging a phone out of their car window. I think they are identifying where they're going to come back to later, after dark.
PopeDubbie@reddit
Takes only ten minutes to take taillights in a hotel parking lot and they’re free
spencewesttx@reddit
Feared the same for my Ranger. Replaced the bolts with security bolts and put a dab of epoxy over the new bolt heads. Tailgate lock is easily defeated.
chrisbcritter@reddit
Have Amazon list all the people in Dallas that searched for those taillights in the past month. You could buy an add request for these specific demographics. Flash an add on their screen saying, "I know you stole my taillights!"
sebzebb@reddit
You should go to the junk yard. I had a Nissan that had rims stolen in Downtown. The dealer quoted me 1k just for the rim. So I went to the junkyard and got a replacement. I went to junkyard between Dallas and Seagoville and got it there. There was also a database you can look at

TL:DR; Under Texas law, deadly force may be justifiably used to prevent theft or criminal mischief, but only if certain conditions are met, including the crime occurring at night and the necessity of deadly force to prevent the suspect from escaping. The law does not explicitly address the cost or value of the item being stolen as a determinant for the justification of deadly force. Instead, the focus is on whether the use of deadly force was immediately necessary and if there were no other reasonable means to prevent the crime or recover the property.
Under Texas law, deadly force may be justifiably used in specific circumstances involving the prevention of theft or criminal mischief, but strict conditions must be met for this to be considered lawful.
The relevant law is Texas Penal Code §9.42, which allows the use of deadly force in certain situations involving theft or criminal mischief. Deadly force may be used if:
The Texas Penal Code does not directly specify that the cost or value of the property plays a role in justifying deadly force. However, under §9.42, the justification for deadly force in a property crime is closely tied to factors like the timing of the crime (e.g., nighttime theft), the perceived necessity of deadly force to prevent the suspect’s escape, and the unavailability of alternative means to recover the property.
It’s worth noting that while the statute doesn’t focus on the value of the stolen property, courts may consider the proportionality of the force used relative to the circumstances. The necessity and reasonableness of deadly force are critical elements, meaning that the force must be justified in light of the total situation rather than merely the value of the item being stolen.
An important distinction in Texas law is that it gives more leeway for the use of deadly force during the nighttime. This reflects an increased perception of danger and diminished ability to use non-lethal alternatives. For instance, under §9.42, the use of deadly force to prevent theft or criminal mischief is limited to nighttime incidents. This means that the same level of force might not be justifiable during daylight hours.
